The 20 Best Affordable Restaurants in Inland Empire

"Upland German Deli doubles both as a kitchen and a market with a variety of German pantry items to peruse while waiting for a schnitzel sandwich. The menu also has reubens, pastrami sandwiches, and other deli fare covered, though it’s always a good idea to get some knockwurst, potato salad, sauerkraut, and call it a lunch. Don’t forget the apple strudel." - Sean Vukan, Eater Staff

If you haven’t been to Upland German Deli, you are truly missing out on one of the best hidden gems around! From the moment you walk in, you’ are greeted with enthusiasm and you truly feel like you’re in Germany. The owners are awesome, kind and extremely passionate about what they do—and it shows in every bite. The food is nothing short of incredible. Authentic, flavorful, and made with love—every dish is a taste of Germany. Whether it’s the bratwurst, schnitzel, or one of their homemade sides or desserts, (the tarts and potato salad are amazing) everything is consistently fresh and delicious. You can tell they care deeply about quality and tradition. But what truly sets this place apart is the heart behind it. The owners pour their soul into this deli, and it creates an experience that’s not just about food—it’s about community, culture, and connection. Highly recommend to anyone looking for amazing German comfort food and the kind of service that leaves you smiling long after you leave. Thank you, Upland German Deli, for everything you do!

Google
Had such a horrible experience here I have to share. My mom and I came here so excited to try their food and were left shocked for their service. We were next in line to order with a large family in front of us so it was taking a while for us to be attended, of course we didn't mind it, not until it was our turn to order we were finally next and trying to order when a Caucasian lady came in and asked if we were in line. She then went towards the end of the line as she was glimpsing the menu in the wall when the older lady cashier went up to her and asked for her order, the customer politely pointed out that we were next and she was still looking, so the cashier looked at us and said it's okay I can help you now. My mom n I were so shocked because we were there for a long time and even asked to use the restroom which she said they didn't have any. The customer looked at us and again pointed for us and the cashier said it was OK so she did start taking her order. I let the cashier know we were next and she told us to wait so I told her no we were leaving instead because we were next and had been waiting there for a while AND had to use a restroom. So overall we did feel like it was some kind of racial discrimination since we are dark skinned Hispanic women. I have never felt this discriminated or rejected, we definitely will not be going back and do NOT recommend. What a disappointment.

Google
The ambience of this deli feels so cozy like a grandma's house. The staff is nice and so sweet. I have never been in a German food establishment before so I didn't know what to expect but I was NOT disappointed. My sandwich was great. It was so much bigger than I expected! It was also very fresh. I will definitely come back and try another item on their menu.

Google
Hidden gem in Upland. Must stop spot. Get the Yorkshire dip. The best beef dip ever. Bread is soft, cheese is perfect and meat is great. The juice is perfect. The German Potato Salad is so good. The cute little lady behind the counter is super sweet. Prices are really good and you get a really big portion.

Google
This place is amazing due to the incredible food and cozy atmosphere. I love that they play German music and the place is stacked with all assortments of sweets and drinks you cannot find anywhere else (unless you take a drive.) This is the place to go in the Inland Empire for an authentic German sandwich. Check out the chicken schnitzel and Reuben sandwich for a mouth watering sandwich at a price that cannot be matched. The owners are quite a treat to interact with as they are friendly and a little feisty if you hestitate with your order. I recommend ordering ahead to receive your food ASAP when you enter. Definitely five stars and more. Go to this place and check it out. You will not regret it.

Yelp
The folks who run this business are so nice. The food is amazing and very authentic. It's a quiet little place that doesn't offer dine in options but that doesn't take away from the ambiance. Legit German. I swing by every time I'm in Upland which I wish was more than I am.

Yelp
Sandwich was old Wiener schnitzel was old n had been frozen The lady at the counter had a bad attitude Will never go bad If I could put less then one star I would have

John S.

Yelp
Went there and got the turkey sandwich. It was terrible. Stick to the German stuff I guess

Mary W.

Yelp
I've been craving sauerbraten for weeks. I'm finally in Rancho when the German deli has it. They are normally sold out when I'm here. What a disappointing meal! The meat tasted like a deli roast beef in a packaged brown gravy. No sour taste at all. Maybe I should share my great grandmothers recipe with them . The spatzle was flavorless and the red cabbage was so so. The raspberry tart wasn't bad but it was really dry. The gentleman who greeted me when I first arrived was very friendly. The woman not so much! Nice little place with some German decor.

Yelp
Let it be known, the owner lady (who I share the same exact name with) is really off-putting lol. She has a strange personality that really does come off as rude. BUT, she told us that's her schtick. My husband, who's of German descent, was pretty pissed by her attitude. She said she was joking and that she's known for being that way. We were honestly just like wtf lol. However I did read reviews and even articles about her, that she does this for fun to keep work "interesting and not boring." Well, the verdict is. We like the food. A lot! We like it so much that we'd go back, even if her attitude is weird lol. My chicken schnitzel sandwich was simple but amazing because of the curry sauce and mayo I think. My husband enjoyed his Nuremberg bratwurst which comes with 2 sides. The sides came out nice and warm, they were good! The potato salad almost tastes like a peppered pasta. Sauerkraut was yummy. We will come back and try the other dishes! It's best to order in advance for stuff. Coleslaw and pasta too! It's a bummer though that the food is only given to-go. Can't eat there, but apparently before the pandemic you could. There's a couple tables in there, but Kristine said you can't eat there.

Yelp
They have a great variety of German shelf items and excellent food. The bratwurst and other sandwiches are fantastic. It has been in this location for over forty years. The couple who run it did not stay in business via their customer service but the food is worth the lack thereof.

Yelp
Good things come to those who wait... The service here is the wurst... If you're in the market for some puns, and a great sandwich, head to the Upland German Deli. It's currently to-go only, as I discovered, so phone your order in. The wall is papered with awards and articles littered with puns, naming them the best deli in the I.E., or should I say "würst". Don't believe me? Go see for yourself. And while you're there, do yourself a favor and pick up a delicious Reuben Sandwich, or as I call it, the St. Reuben. (Every Pope since JPII is honored on their wall.) The sandwhich itself is 5 star, delicious! The thinly sliced corned beef is piled high on a light rye bread. The saurkraut is sweet and tangy, and the special sauce is very special. You're going to lick your fingers. Highly recommended!

Yelp
Wow! Talk about being transported right back to Germany. This is truly delicious and authentic German foods, and I'm so glad this place exists. It's open for takeout only. There are no dine in or outdoor seating options at this time. Our favorites that we highly recommend are the chicken schnitzel sandwich, nurnberger bratwurst with German potato salad, and a beehive cake slice for dessert. You'll also find a small market of fun, yummy German products. Upland German Deli offers friendly service, phenomenal and authentic foods, and extremely competitive prices for these days. Great place to visit and we look forward to returning. Danke Upland German Deli!

Yelp
A great mom and pop place to get authentic German food in the IE. Portion sizes for the plates and sandwiches were generous and at an affordable price. My two favorites are the chicken schnitzel sandwich and the beef dip sandwiches. Can't beat the price at just under 9 bucks. The German potato salad is an excellent side. We also tried one of the daily specials: the cabbage roll. Very filling and flavorful. You can also buy sausages and other German groceries to go. Check them out

Yelp
Small businesses like this one is what keeps the community vibrant and diverse. The food is absolutely delicious and the vibe inside is what I picture as a mom and pop deli. The staff are on the elderly side so give them some grace when ordering. The food is 10/10

Yelp
The food was really great here. I had the Yodler sandwich and the wife had the Yorkshire. Both were delicious. We also ordered a shareable potato salad and a dessert pastry each; an apple boat and apricot boat. That Apple boat alone is going to get me back in this deli's doors. Unfortunately it was a long day so we took the food home, but I will back for the schnitzel and a German beer. The ambiance alone made me want to take another trip back to Germany. And the couple running the place were delightful. They offered friendly service and reasonable prices. So for some old world charm and a delicious bite to eat look no further. Come to this deli and support a local business.

Yelp
Love this place. Their Yorkshire dip is one of the best sandwiches I've ever had. If that sandwich was served in downtown LA, it would go viral. It is so insanely delicious. The service is part of the experience. The lady who owns the deli is very, very German. She's a riot. Always good for a laugh. The interior is also part of the experience. It's almost like time traveling. (In a good way.) The prices haven't changed since I've been going here, about 15 years. Everything is very affordable. Upland is so lucky to have this little gem, and we need to support these local businesses so they can stay in business. Get your Yorkshire dip today!

Yelp
Really great food! Hubster and I happily left there this morning with much more than we went in to get. Christine (the owner) is a hoot! We got six sausages (my favorite is the veal bratwurst) which is what we went in to pick up. She asked if we wanted some yummy rolls to go with. We did not (though they looked good), then I noticed the pretzel rolls!!! We wanted two but she made a plea for the third (and last one) to go home with her "brother and sister"...so into the bag she went! The rolls are super soft and so tasty! We also got black forest cake and tiramisu. Both were wonderful. We have had sandwiches from here, as well, which are great. This is a two person operation and is a little place with a small hometown deli feel. If you are coming in and wanting things in a hurry, or if you have no sense of humor, then this place is not for you. This is a great place to pick up food and have a fun interaction with the owners.

Yelp
This store is a gem! It is full of culture and life and the owners have so much personality and sass it makes you feel at home. Also the food is amazing. Don't skip this amazing place!

Yelp
Growing up, I had a best friend who took me to a German restaurant where she introduced me to their delicious goulash dishes, schnitzels, bratwurst, sauerkraut, red cabbage, and more. We feasted on all of these scrumptious dishes and it was such an incredible experience for me. As an adult, I have always been on the look out to find a good German restaurant to be able to enjoy these amazing dishes, and it's always been challenging to find one near me. I also married into a Polish family who enjoys similar foods, such as cabbage rolls, sauerkraut, sausages, and braunschweiger sandwiches, so I have developed a love for German and Polish foods throughout the years. Boy, was I happily surprised when I saw the Upland German Deli as I was running errands close by. I wanted to try a variety of their meals and I ordered the braunschweiger sandwich, wiener schnitzel meals with sauerkraut and red cabbage, and bratwurst meal with red cabbage and German potato salad. I also got some black forest cake and butter cookies. I was starving, so I ate half of the braunschweiger sandwich on my way home. It was THE BEST braunschweiger I have ever tasted. The sandwich literally melted in my mouth, which is hard to believe, but true. The rye bread and braunschweiger were both so soft, fresh, and delicious and I couldn't get enough of it. The other meals were for my family, but I tasted some of it and wow, the sauerkraut, red cabbage, and potato salad were the best I've ever had in my life. They were so fresh, flavored to perfection (not bitter at all), and tender. I've tried to make sauerkraut dishes many times and cooked them all day in the crock pot with many ingredients, but they never tasted as good as Upland German Deli's. I wish they would share their recipe. :) My brother-in-law loved his bratwurst meal and the wiener schnitzel was cooked to perfection. I will be running errands in the area again tomorrow (yay), so I'm definitely going back to this awesome deli to order more delicious meals! By the way, the two owners were so kind, friendly, and nice during my visit. It was fun talking with them. Their pastries were also very fresh and delectable. I can't wait to go back for more authentic and yummy German delicacies! If you're in the area, I highly recommend going there STAT!

Yelp
Nestled inside this small mom n pop deli you'll find some delicious authentic German food. Portion size is very large at a more than affordable price. The food just pours out authentic German flavor & taste. The German couple that own the deli are a delight & kind-fully makes you feel welcomed.

Yelp
Ate here yesterday for lunch and found the place to be very cozy and welcoming. The couple that run the place are very nice and the service was prompt and again, very nice. In addition to some condiments that I picked up I also had a Corned Beef Reuben, and it was made expertly and was very tasty. And the prices for it all was quite reasonable. All in all a very pleasant experience and I'll be sure to be returning soon.

Yelp
I was looking for a spot that had items to make a gift basket for my boss from our partners in Germany for his birthday. I walked in and the store is super cute and the lady and gentleman there were super friendly and fun. I got some desserts and beer!!! so delicious!

Yelp
Love this little place and have been frequenting it for years. The baked items are authentic and always in high demand around the holidays. The schnitzel is just like I remember from Germany. The products are mostly all imported from Europe and you can find some cool stuff!

Yelp
I've been going to this German deli for many years (1970s). The food is consistently good and pleasant to the eyes! The owners are gracious and kind! For a sandwich, the Grinder is an excellent choice and it's reasonably priced! A lot of meat, a pickle, and very delicious! The sweets are delicious and the music is 100% German. Wonderful atmosphere even for a take out only! The rye bread is also delicious! The woman is a sweetheart once you know that her attitude is an act!! Thank you for being so good!

Alexandra F.

Yelp
This place has delicious food, be forewarned they do not have dine in service, it's a order and pick up only, but I will say it was worth it, the sandwiches, the sausages and the potatoes salad were delicious, had the homemade flavor you can't imitate any other way than to make with love .

Rosa C.

Yelp
Best Rueben Sandwiches EVER! Hot potato salad and red cabbage is to dream. Pastries are homemade by the dessert chef. Just wonderful!

Yelp
My parent loved this place for the authentic German food and that you could purchase freshly made from their deli. My wife and I stopped in for an early lunch one day and really enjoyed our experience. I ordered the Yodler Sandwich, Sliced knackwurst and melted cheese on Rye bread. My wife ordered the Swiss Schnitzel, breaded white pork, roasted onion, tomatoes sand melted cheese. Both meals came with German style potato salad and coleslaw. Both meals were absolutely delicious. The flavor for each sandwich was incredible. Nothing beats a freshly made good German sandwich. The German potato salad as well as the coleslaw were incredible and taste wholly different from the American versions. If you appreciate traditional German food or would like to try it out, this is the place to go. You can go wrong with anything on the menu, it is just different from American style food. They are usually a bit busy so there may be a bit of wait, but everything is made fresh and is worth the wait. While you are waiting for your food, look around the store at their market and imported items. Items like Red Cabbage, Sauerkraut, pickles and freshly made German pastries are also well worth the price. This is a family business who take their meals very seriously, so much care is put into their food. I have heard that they are rude but in all my time have never experienced that kind of service although you must remember that the German way of communication might be misconstrued vs how we communicate here in California. This German Deli is a much visit for anyone longing for real German food

Tom M.

Yelp
One of the few places in the Los Angeles area to get real German sausages. Also German beer, saurkraut and other side dishes.

Yelp
Wow, never have I had such a hard time deciding what to get, because everything looked so great. Due to my poor decision-making abilities, I simply gave up and picked two things that seemed to have pictures. Ordered the sauerbrauten and cabbage rolls, both solid German dishes that came out perfectly! The sauerbrauten was perfectly marinated and absolutely melted in your mouth evenly enough for me to taste the sauce and meat simultaneously. The cabbage rolls were also very tasty, with the cabbage being easy to chew through, allowing me to easily get at the stuffed goodies inside. As my sides, I had German potato salad, Swiss potato salad, the spaetzle (I hate to call it German pasta, but that gives you a vague idea of what it is) and red cabbage. All of these were great and made each dish a full meal with diverse flavors. That being said, the standouts were the Swiss potato salad and the spaetzle. The Swiss potato salad was mustardy and refreshing, which you'll simply like if you like mustard, which I did as a dangerous mustard supremacist and average potato enjoyer. The spaetzle was actually my favorite - I usually like spaetzle, but this one came out fresh, warm, and chewy. The edges were only lightly fried, so you could enjoy a roasted exterior covering a chewey inside. Really a level of attention to dough-making and preparation that I very rarely see in Western food (where it's often relegated as a neglected "non-hip" staple). Overall, super excited to try this place out again and get one of these dishes again. Also, the woman who runs the counter was both extremely nice, no-nonsense, and humorous, so another plus (German food is often as underrated as...German food)!
google avatar

Ryan A.

Yelp
Wonderful store. I went frequently when I was a young child, and returning not the food is still delicious and their grocery selection is perfect for when I'm looking to cook German!

Steven O.

Yelp
Was excited to try this "hole in the wall" deli. I use that phrase with all the positive affection attached to it. Upon entry you are greeted with a " OPEN FOR TAKE OUT ONLY". This is seemingly a relic from a time in which businesses were closed for a mysterious ailment not to be named. They still enforce said requirement and when you walk in, the wooden tables with glass tops have signs under said glass informing you its "take out only", (I.E. Take your food and get out). Unsure as to what to get since this was my first time there I asked for a recommendation. My family and I ordered an assortment of sandwiches including the schnitzel and ruben. First the food. The sandwiches are good. Tasty. The owners lovingly make them in a toaster over behind the counter and have deli meat to purchase by the pound. The service: The service is.......... slooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooowwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww. It took over 25 minutes to obtain 3 sandwiches. I began to wonder if in a astounding amount of authenticity the proprietors had retreated to Deutschland to obtain the bill of fair. This may seem punitive, but in the time of Jersey Mike's and other businesses that make fresh to order hot and cold sandwiches that can successfully feed the lunch rush, it seemed excessive. When we ordered, no one was there. We were first in line. The nice lady took our order and her silent husband(?) got to work on them. A customer entered and ordered after me and when he was unwilling to wait any longer, he left. This prompted a back and fourth. Owner : "Did he leave?" Me: "He left." Owner: "He's gone?" Me: "He's gone" This was reminiscent of the scene in the movie " Casino", see attached link. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m6g5preB6Kk She later added, "some people have no patience". Yea.... A expat came in for some authentic cold cuts, was served and in and out in a flash. All the while we continued to wait with German tuba music playing the background. I don't dislike it but after 5 minutes, it was a bit overbearing. I began to dance involuntarily. The prices are not bad for todays inflationary environment, though I'm sure you can get a couple of sandwiches and 2 desserts somewhere for less than 38 bucks. They have lots of German and other food items for sale, but as much as I enjoy marzipan, I couldn't see myself buying a marzipan candy bar for 14 dollars. Would I go back? Sure. I would call ahead though and let them know that I'm jonesin' for a chicken schnitzel sandwich (can we get a pork cutlet too?) and would be by in a few days to pick it up.
google avatar

Lee L.

Yelp
Lovely cozy store! Greeted warmly and cordially. Got the chicken schnitzel which was wrapped practically. There is a store like section where you can buy snacks and another section with yummy pastries. If you're in the area it's good to check this place out!

Prabhjot S.

Yelp
This place is so good, when you ear their food you can taste it's made with love and care. Every single time I went there I felt it was made with passion and love. There food is amazing, unfortunately I don't work in same area but I would love to drive there every day and eat at this place
google avatar

Craig H.

Yelp
I made the mistake of ordering a dinner plate in a deli......so I'll take some of the blame and keep it at 4 stars. I read about this place in a travel magazine and decided to give it a try. I ordered the sauerbraten....here is the description from their menu: "Heavily marinated steak with a brown gravy" As you can see from my picture, I received sliced deli roast beef (not marinated), with some gravy on top. Not terrible tasting, but not sauerbraten. The meal came with a nice piece of rye bread, so I made a sandwich with beef. So, why 4 stars? That red cabbage, it was delicious, I would order a gallon of that stuff. The Spaetzle was solid as well. (Kinda funny a German deli misspells it on the menu) I also ordered one of their pastries. It was as good as it looked. I'd go back for a hot sandwich and some of that cabbage.

Traci S.

Yelp
Went for a Reuben sandwich. Never disappoints. I love walking into the deli. The smells are amazing. Grateful to have this gem in our city. I will definitely be back for my husbands Black Forest cake.

Yelp
Amazing authentic German deli in the rancho area! The owners are sweet and the food is delicious! Sad we moved away but worth making the drive from OC

Yelp
Great pastry. Nice little slice of Germany and Austria in SoCal Wide variety of German fresh goods, sauces, sweetis.

Yelp
Yes! We love this deli! The prices are pretty high. Service and quality are great. We go as often as we can afford.

Yelp
There aren't that many German delis in SoCal, but I have to say that the Upland German Deli is one of the best. Their German potato salad is delicious and their zesty sauerkraut, clearly homemade, is "next level." I had a couple of their pastries and loved them too. A sausage platter with two sides and two pastries was only $15 which is a steal. I didn't like, however, that they aren't allowing dine-in even though they have tables and chairs...the owner said something about the city not allowing it (?) but I think it's just the owners preference. That annoyed me because I had to unexpectedly eat in my car but the food was so good I guess I'll look past that. My family is German-American, and I'd say that the owner is "very German" but she's courteous and clearly a good cook!

Yelp
We walked up to this deli and we won't be back. The staff was not friendly at all. The food was not so unique (cold cut sandwiches and pastries) that we could not eat elsewhere. It was hot inside. The credit card machine was dysfunctional, so the owner had the audacity to ask me to leave to get cash because of their problem. My sweet daughter had some cash with her which we used. When we re-approached the counter no one helped or acknowledged us for several minutes. Once our transaction was finally complete, we took our food to the tables and chairs in the front of the deli. Then the owner came and told us we couldn't eat there and asked us to leave. I did not realize treating my daughter to a sandwich and pastry would be such an ordeal.
google avatar

Nathan S.

Yelp
This deli is temporarily closed until July 7th. Nobody updated their hours and we wasted our time driving over here.
google avatar

Eugene M.

Yelp
I struggled with his review, because I hate to get poor reviews to a struggling small business. The deli would be a great resource for unique German packaged and certain meat items, but we had sandwiches which were marginal at best. There was only one person working and she had to alternate helping customers. The puzzling part were the tables & chairs I saw in online photos but when it was time to eat, we were told all 5 of us had to eat in the parking lot. Evidently there was a huge sign on the front door but the door was open so you don't see the sign. Hard to recommend other than visiting for what looked like good bratwurst or pastry. It would appear the pastries are baked elsewhere so it's hard to say how fresh they are, but they look very good.

Yelp
What a great mom and pop German delicatessen in upland. I randomly found this place thru Yelp and I wish I tried this place sooner! The staff is nice and kind. They truly appreciate the support from their customers. It is still take out only. I had the opportunity to try their veal bratwurst and the liverwurst sandwich! Both were very delicious! Everything is made fresh to order. While I was waiting, I grabbed some German beer for my friend and also eyed their little German store. They carry chocolate, crackers, spread, and even German magazine! In the front of the store, they have a glass display of their desserts! I grabbed their second to last tiramisu. Everything I tried are absolutely delicious! I wish I went with the recommendation of buying a whole liverwurst by the lb instead. The German potato salad and sauerkraut were very delicious as well. Everything tasted freshly made (and hopefully made in-house).

Yelp
So good authentic I love the owners it's old-school as you can get it's the best.! sandwiches are so delicious
google avatar

Jenette N.

Yelp
Tried their Smoked Kassler Pork chop/Kasslerrippchen for the first time, and it is delicious! Tastes sort of like a smoked turkey leg from The OC Fair or Disneyland, but juicier. Sadly, they only have 1 burner in the kitchen, so they didn't offer hot sides like their fried egg noodles/spaetzle or fried potatoes/bratkartoffeln. I got the macaroni salad and red cabbage/rotkohl instead. Also got their cold cuts (Bierschicken and German Bologna/ Fleischwurst) as well as my usual order of Wienerschnitzel.

Yelp
We found this German Deli in October 2020. Our good friend hosted an Oktoberfest at their home. We wanted to keep it as authentic as possible so we found this little German Deli in Upland. It didn't t disappoint. We stocked up on a variety of German Bratwurst, spicy mustard, pickle fiesta veggies mix and some freshly baked pretzels. Everything was a hit at the Oktoberfest party! Since then we have been coming back for all their amazing and fresh food. I highly recommend that if you're craving some German food definitely pay them a visit. Don't mind the shop owner. She's a firecracker with a wicked sense of humor. I know some of the previous post say she's rude, but she's not! She just has a very dry wicked sense of humor. We come for the food and her spicy fiery personality. It's a package deal! Lol

Yelp
Ok food. Mean owner. That about sums it up. Many reviews state that her attitude is her shtick, but she has to know when to stop the act. I asked for sourdough instead of rye for my Ruben. She said no. I asked for half pastrami half corned beef. She said no. My buddy asked for a soda with his lunch, she told him to go grab it himself out of the fridge. Rudely.

Yelp
Authentic and delicious. Never disappoints. Makes me feel as if I'm walking into a restaurant in a small German village.

Yelp
Old school specialty german grocery store and delicatessen. Can't eat in anymore, have to get prepared meals to go. Still nothing else around quite like it, mom and pop vibe and good homemade quality. Good to know there are still places around like this.

Yelp
Small business but good food. It's hard to find authentic german food. We had their pastries this time and they were delicious.

Yelp
What happened?!?! We've been going to this German deli over the years, though it's been a while (we just got busy and lack of time on our part) and have always loved the food. We also always love their apricot strudel, and a couple of weeks ago, we called in and ordered one to pick up on the Saturday before Christmas, Dec. 23rd. We specifically asked for the large APRICOT STRUDEL, and the guy took our order. Dec. 23rd rolls around and my husband goes to pick it up around noon. He's gone a while. Comes homes with a square, white box (not the usual pink, longish-shaped box) and says it was just chaos and crazy there. They also told him they didn't have apricot but peach. I'm ok with that, though it didn't look like the usual strudel. It was round. We dig into it on Christmas day. Ugh. Whatever it was, it was NOT a strudel. It was some weird peach tart on some kind of cookie-like crust. It wasn't too terrible, just kind of bland and disappointing. It probably would have been ok if what you wanted was some kind of mediocre peach tart. But it was definitely NOT the gorgeous, elongated, braided apricot strudel loaf of years past.

Yelp
WTF just happened!! Let's start with the food is a 4 or 5. The service is a 1. It's been years since I've been here and just... wow. I wanted my wife to try spetzle and remember how good theirs was served hot with sauerbraten gravy. Oh to dream. Parking lot looked fairly empty but crazy fire-drill inside where 4 customers were waiting made me keep looking around for Ashton Kutcher. The first customers were waiting for sandwiches to be made and were asked at least 3 times what side they wanted with their sandwich (Swiss Potato salad). The next person was just picking up a phone order. Next person was ordering sandwiches and I wanted salads. (Me):1lb Swiss Potato, 1 lb German Potato, 2 lb sauerkraut. (Michelle): "We don't sell 2 lbs of Sauerkraut ". (Me): Okay, can I have 1 lb Sauerkraut & my wife have 1 lb. (Michelle): "Sure" (Michelle) : "hold on, hold on, I need to write this down" (Kristine): What would you like? Me: I'm getting salads, Michelle took my order. New customer: how much is the special? Michelle: which one New customer: the knockwurst Michelle: I don't know. (If only it was on the board behind you or you worked there at your family deli for 10+ years!!) Next Michelle looks at me Michelle: what would you like? Me: 1 lb or Swiss, 1 lb German & 2 x 1 lb of sauerkraut. Michelle: oh yeah, right. A mere 40 minutes later the checkout ring up was marginally less frustrating. I'm actually leaving a fair amount of additional fanfare out with other customers. Holy Shit!! Shit. Food is good but my sanity is worth more.

Yelp
Available for takeout only for now. We wanted to really try everything listed as the specials but sadly cabbage rolls were not available for lunch. We got 4 entrees and each came with your choice of sides plus a slice of light rye bread and butter. The sauerbraten was very tender thinly sliced beef with a delicious brown gravy. The slice of rye bread added to the meal was really a tasty carbohydrate overload. The rouladen (bacon and vegetables stuffed meat roll) and browned gravy was very tender and tasty as well. The bratwurst was served with a mustard and was just the right consistency and snap . Well seasoned and went great with the red cabbage salad (perfectly sweet tart) and mustard. The schnitzel was my least favorite but still was tasty, not sure if it might have needed to be pounded thinner. The sides are perfectly paired with the rich food: sour cabbage salad counters the savory gravy, Swiss potato salad is the deeper yellow colored one and German potato salad also very tasty. I enjoyed the macaroni salad too which is dressed with mayonnaise but tastes really refreshing, not heavy. The food is prepared very well and to order. I did not mind a few minutes waiting. That gave me time to browse the merchandise. I got two beers and a jar of berry jam ( Austrian made). While I waited, other folks picked up a plum torte and cannolis, plus bratwursts. It's in a plaza next to a Del Taco or Taco Bell drive through so that was a bit hairy jostling for a spot to park and then getting out of the place - better to park on the street in front of the business. I had a very "unique" experience with the lady of the house but I think her strict demeanor was all in jest. When I left she reminded me to please leave a Google or Yelp review. Her husband does most of the baking and cooking. They both seem very genuinely happy making this food. Highly recommend all the food! I'd be here more often if it was closer to home especially for the brats and pastries.
