"This Wednesday, February 28, concluded the 16 year run of dive bar Upper Deck Tavern. Photographer Mike Ledford stopped by the storied haunt to catalog the last wild and crazy days. Lower King saloon Upper Deck has been home to PBRs, camaraderie, Sunday night karaoke, liquor shots, and bartenders willing to lend an ear. Owner Ken Newman lost the lease on the space at the end of February. Fans came out in droves to have one last bottle or can of PBR plus a few swigs of whiskey. As the days went on, the supplies got lower and the bar got more packed with people. Newman is hopeful that he can reopen another spot soon in Charleston. Until then, enjoy the photos from the last nights of Upper Deck, full of merriment, cheers, goodbyes, final visits to the infamous restrooms, and plenty of booze. Leave any fond Upper Deck memories in the comments." - Erin Perkins

Small, hidden, rowdy with tattered bar stools, the Upper Deck is a wonderful find. Follow the shifty alleyway off of King St and climb the stairs to get to this native oasis. If it wasn't for a random street guy we would've missed it. A rare gem for a unique experience.

Great bar tenders and crowd with an under-ground-esque atmosphere. Cool music and they let you bring up pizza from Gilroys downstairs which is open late.

One of my go to bars downtown. I'm a fan of dive bars, cheap drinks, and good people. Upper deck covers all those bases. Bartenders are funny and friendly. Drinks are cheap and tasty. Good crowd in there with a good mix of people but mainly a younger (21-30) crowd. They keep some board games and stuff to mess around with while drinking. Karaoke is always a good time on Saturday and Sunday nights. Little cramped when it's busy. You'd miss this place if you didn't know it existed or unless someone pointed it out. Truly a hole in the wall gem. Like most dive bars the bathroom could use some work. They're not spotless (at least the men's) and they only have 2 urinals for us. But hey that's the least of my concerns, plenty of places to go on King Street if you have an emergency.

I have visited Charleston twice in the past 3 months, and both times found myself in this bar. My first trip here, the door man was very persistent in telling me I would love the bar. When I came to Charleston for a second visit, I couldn't wait to find this bar again. After only drinking there about 4 times total, I felt like I was a regular and belonged here. It has been the best part of my trip so far.

Admittedly, I biased towards this place. I've been either working here or drinking here for over a decade now. While the trendy bars of lower and now upper King St, The Horse and Cart / Upper Deck has remained a mainstay of the Charleston bar scene. There are always a solid set of people working here, caring about what they do, caring about the people that come in, that make coming to the bar a joy.

no food, no sign, no frat toolbags. this place is just about as scene or underground as you can get downtown. great happy hour specials, cool bar staff, interesting and bizarre customers. also the music is great and they have a selection of board games. bingo for booze tuesdays at 9 or 10 is a must.

Super divey bar hiding in plain sight on King St. There are no signs to get there, so you need to know where to find the entrance. Great prices on alcohol, no food but there is a pizza joint downstairs that stays open late!

If you go to this place you may wonder why I gave it 5 stars ... well it is a 5 star dive bar. Drinks are cheap (PBR on tap), the bartender is friendly, and the bathroom is gross - check out the pictures.
