When determining where we were going to be dining for our last night in Sweden, Upper House became a strong contender months in advance as we were planning our trip. We didn't realize we would also be staying at the hotel the final night until we were on our trip, but the restaurant was without debate.
We were excited to see that the kitchen has a Michelin star even though it is only for the fine dining side. There are two options for dining here, the fine dining set menu and the al la carte more casual dining. Both the same kitchen and same chefs so we went for the casual option.
The dining room is really beautiful with windows framing the walls to give a gorgeous view of the city. The restaurant is simple and modern with intimate candlelight and minimalist yet elegant design. There's an interesting lit up water design on the ceiling. Our server was very professional and explained all the options available for me being a member of the gluten free ihatewheat allergy club. There were several items I didn't think I would be able to enjoy and the kitchen was able to modify them which was fantastic and further elevated my dining experience.
The husband and I decided to sample several items together. We started with a cheese plate that our server put together for us from a cheese display at the front of the restaurant. They brought out gluten free bread for me and we enjoyed a variety of cheeses and jam. The next tasty bites that made their way to us was the omelette truffle cream cheese which was undoubtedly my favorite dish of the night. I wasn't sure how I was going to feel about the omelette and a black truffle cream cheese but it was absolutely decadent. The husband isn't a big fan of shellfish so I went for the scallop with dill cream which was beautifully presented but not one of my favorite flavor profiles of the night.
The husband ordered the herring curry which was tempura fried and I was not expecting to get to taste. The kitchen prepared it gluten free for me and I really enjoyed sampling it and it was the husband's favorite dish of the night. The final bite was the pork belly which was a little disappointing. The pork belly was great but the accompanying cabbage was very acidic and there was a lot of it, more than we were able to eat with the pork. The same was true with an incredible beef cheek but very sour acidic pumpkin.
The breakfast the next morning was fantastic. We really enjoyed the hot options that were available off the menu as well as the cold selections set up in buffet. The server this morning was again professional and detailed.
Overall our dinner and breakfast demonstrated that professionalism and presentation are in the forefront of the dinning experience here. The menu items we tasted were also very nice with some of them being fantastic and others not quite being what we were expecting. Overall though, a really good dining experience.
