As far as corner stores go, this is the tops!
Literally.
It's situated at the peak of 17th Street. Step outside and look to your right. You can practically see Reno.
I already have to trek half way up this hill to reach my apartment, so continuing the steep ascent to the top has never been in the cards.
That is, until the night of Christmas when I desperately needed a cup of yogurt to aid me in swallowing horse-sized allergy pills (yeah, I said it. I still have trouble swallowing pills. Bite me you pill-happy sleezeballs!). After passing by the Upper Terrace Market on my way back from Petaluma and noticing it was actually open, I parked my car at home, used the little boy's room, put my hiking boots on and climbed the mountain to reach this palace of (in)convenience.
The market is immaculate. Shiny, clean tiled floors. Perfectly stocked shelves with everything facing in the same direction. A surprisingly decent selection considering the constraints of a mini-market. The yogurt section must have been recently ravaged by dairy-craving monsters because I only had one brand and about 3 flavors from which to choose. I grabbed a cup of low-fat raspberry Clover and walked around the rest of the store to see what I had been missing.
Whatever you do, make sure you head to the back. You will momentarily leave a corner store and enter a wine cellar. It's a separate room behind the main foyer with just freezers and wine. You know you're in California when 1/3 of a mini-market is dedicated to nicer wines than you'll find in all of North Dakota.
One downfall is they only take cash unless you're purchasing $15+ of goods. You might be able to pay with your card for less, but they're going to charge you. And what good store would enforce a rule like this without have an ATM machine inside that will charge you a $2501 fee for using their device? A store this good.
So make sure to visit the Upper Terrace Market soon. Just don't forget to grab some cash, comfy shoes, REI backpack equipped with water packs, wooden staff and sweatband before you head out.
