After Anti-LGBTQ Attacks, Suburban Bakery Threatened With Fines | Eater Chicago

"I found UpRising Bakery and Cafe, located about 45 miles from Chicago, has endured weeks of intimidation and vandalism after planning a family-friendly drag show; village officials have sent a letter saying the bakery is barred from holding drag shows or other “entertainment events” because the building lacks proper zoning. What began as regular community events—owner Corrina Sac says cookie-making classes and live music have been staples since opening in 2021—escalated in June to police calls, a bag of feces left outside, and a sign smearing staff as pedophiles, and Sac says the village’s move feels like discrimination and a conspiracy to interfere with her business. The American Civil Liberties Union of Illinois rebuked the village, and ABC Chicago reported Sac could also lose the bakery’s liquor license. Village officials contend the bakery has “fundamentally changed” its business by holding regular events and say nearby businesses complained about safety and loss of business. After vandals struck the day before a planned July 23 drag show, the bakery canceled the event and Lake in the Hills police arrested Joseph I. Collins, charging him with a felony hate crime and criminal damage to property; independent reporters have published photos linking Collins to January 6 gatherings and to members of the Proud Boys, heightening concerns about extremist involvement in the attacks while community support formed long lines around the building." - Naomi Waxman

Zataar muffins were AMAZING. Their mint lemonade was too strong for my friend but if you like flavor this is the place to go. My kind of spot! The atmosphere is clean and has a nice cozy spot for a more chill time as well as window seating. Beautiful Palestinian artworks on the walls❤️

Pretty expensive for a standard latte ($6) and then extra if you want a syrup (~$1). Felt like there was only one shot in there too and a ton of milk. It's a very cute and quiet place. But I don't think I can see myself making this my daily coffee spot.

7.10 ($6 + $1.10 for syrup) for a flavored latte that just tastes like milk is pretty disappointing, added another shot when I got home and it tasted like coffee. Zataar muffin is tasty but is an English muffin with Zataar and olive oil, not a pastry as I thought.

Just stopped by for a Sunday morning coffee and something sweet. The barista was very nice and helpful in picking between the many types of baklava they've got showcased (went with a nutella-pocket one, as well as some mini rolls, both delicious). They have your usual café staples, lattes, iced teas/coffees, etc. I just got a regular black coffee; it's hot and fresh, and tastes a little like a "stronger and nicer dunkin donuts" cup, which I would guess means Arabica beans. I get a little bit of cocoa flavor, and it tastes like a darker roast. It's not quite for me, but it's in no way bad! It's a relatively sparse spot, but makes sense when you remember that it will mainly be there to serve the upcoming theater. It's well decorated and very clean; well worth a stop-in.

Yelp
Stopped into the newly opened Uprising Theater which is a theater and community space rooted in Palestinian resistance, resilience and celebration. The space is geared towards uplifting Palestinian voices and other marginalized groups. There is also a cafe on site that serves Intelligentsia coffee along with some food like baklava, Jerusalem salad and knaafeh. I had an iced latte which was perfect and the walnut baklava which was fresh and delicious. Service was prompt and friendly. There's ample space inside for coworking. The theater plans to host its first show in Fall 2025 and I'm excited to check it out.
