Urban Axes - Review - Kensington - Philadelphia - The Infatuation

"You’ll have to bring your own food and drinks to Urban Axes in Kensington, but it’s worth it to learn how to (safely) throw sharp objects at a bullseye with all your closest friends. You likely won’t be confused for Arya Stark by the end of your session, but you’ll probably be just as confident in your skills anyways." - Sydney McElwee

Google
What can I say, we had a fantastic time at ax throwing. We had a group of 6. We were seamlessly set up from deposit to release form to so much fun. Our instructor had great charisma and enjoyed each of our enthusiastic shouts for each other. We had so many rounds of thrilling competitions and nail biting tie brakers, it was one for the books. Highly recommend. It was amazing!!

Google
We had a great time. This place doesn't serve food but the spirits were delicious. I tried the apple cider w/ rum. 10/10.Our coaches Craig and George were amazing and extremely patient with us. Thank you for an amazing time!!!!

Google
tj was the man!!! he was the best with this experience. i previously went to another axe throwing spot, i didn’t have high hopes with this one but tj matched the vibes & energy and was so much fun! we went for a surprise party for me and i couldn’t have asked for a better one!! if tj’s not there when i come back i’ll be a little disappointed🥲 100/10!!!

Google
Great service and staff, lots of fun elements like leagues and different games to bring some extra competitiveness to the time. Generally though, it’s just really fun throwing axes at the target. This was more fun than I expected and I highly recommend it

Google
Nice axe throwing spot. There is a bar with various beer and canned cocktail options. Instructors are very friendly and they really try their best to be helpful. Unlike other axe throwing businesses, the instructors here stay with you the whole time and act like “coaches” offering advice throughout the session. The sessions are definitely more structured than other axe throwing places, which you may or may not like. Overall positive experience.

Google
We had a great experience at Urban Axes with Coach Adam, who made the experience both instructive and fun. I left feeling like I learned a lot and would like to come back again. It’s cool that they are part of an international league and have knowledgeable coaches, rather than a random retail shop that could be run by anyone.

Google
The Keep The Fire Burning Couple’s Hangout 2025 had an awesome fellowship with Axe throwing and Football. Phil and Craig were awesome coaches. We can’t wait to go back. We Highly recommended for any group looking for a good time. #KTFB2025

Google
Came today for the first time with some friends and we all had an awesome time! Luckily, restrictions lifted earlier this week and we were able to throw indoors. Every single staff member was super kind and professional. We booked an hour and it didn't quite feel long enough because we were all having such a great time. We will definitely be back!!!

Yelp
Not sure how I've not reviewed Urban, but it is a fantastic spot to host a variety of parties and team building. We started throwing in leagues here at end of 2022 and have been enjoying it since. There's bowling football (kinda), darts, and occasionally corn hole. In the summer, there's food trucks and a restaurant has opened at the end of the parking lot. The drink variety is pretty great with both alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages along with snacks. You get coaching when you go in for a group to help you learn how to throw and get to play a variety of games. If you have enough time, you can try throwing the big axe. What I like most about Urban is that the employees are super welcoming and the axe community is too if you decide to join a league. You can learn to tweak your throw from a variety of different people and hone in on your technique. You don't feel bad when you're first not great at throwing since so many people want to help. There are various groups that host fundraising events and charities that collaborate like BARCS and Baltimore Humane Society. Give Urban a try!

Yelp
So. Much. Fun!!! I had tried axe throwing once before and was not very successful but my experience at Urban Axes has redeemed the entire experience. I went around 2pm on a Sunday for an hour. Upon arriving, we had sign waivers and wait for a bit before an instructor was ready for us. I was SO grateful for Connor, our instructor, and his helpful tips. He was also just positive and a great addition to the experience. I thought my friend and I would have boards to ourselves but we ended up sharing with another couple which actually made it more fun to have someone else keep score and to cheer on together. I will definitely be back!!

Yelp
Ive come here before and returned. The staff are the wheels that keeps business rolling. The adult beverages are but are in a can. While waiting we started playing a large scaled tretris; which was really cool There are other games to play while you wait for you turn. The atmosphere was great and it was not crowded I like thie establish.

Yelp
Urban Axes the ideal date night activity. Dinner and a movie... yawn . Throwing axes... fun, fun, fun . Reservations are recommended, but not required. Sessions typically begin at the top of the hour. After checking in and signing the waiver, we grabbed a couple drinks from the bar and played a few board games while we waited. The bar offers an array of beers, wines, and canned cocktails. When it was time to throw axes, an instructor came over, introduced himself, and escorted us to the throwing lanes. After a brief safety tutorial and demonstration, it was time to really have some fun. Sessions are an hour long. You're given the of three scoring games... or you can freestyle. Definitely add UA to your list!

Yelp
My group had a GREAT time at urban axes. We booked the "one hour social throwing" for three people. We showed up early to check in, grab a drink, and our instructor grabbed us to begin right on time. It was awesome having an instructor to help guide us on how to throw better, which is something I haven't experienced at other axe-throwing places. This definitely made the experience more fun, and worth the price. All the employees were so nice and I really couldn't recommend this place enough.

Yelp
When you have a bad day, or rain destroys your outdoor plans Urban Axes is the place to turn that frown upside down. Fill out a waver online and book your throwing lane or you can walk-in. (I highly recommend booking your lane online) While you wait for your throwing lane, head over to the bar, grab a drink and prepare yourself for good time. Before you're allowed to throw, an instructor will go over the safety rules and teach you the basics on axe throwing. I learned the two handed throw, one handed throw and an underhand trick shot. After the group has some time to practice, the real games begin! You'll take turns throwing at the target: Black: 5 points Blue: 3 points Red: 1 point Green: 7 points At first, your goal is to hit the board without the axe falling off. It's harder then it looks, but once you get it, that feeling of hitting the target is a thrill! The instructor has all kinds of games for your group play and they keep track of your score so you can just focus on your technique. The hour flew by and if you want more action ask the front desk about extending your time or joining a league. Joining a league has perks: You can show up an hour early to practice before your game. Plus, you can drop in and play whenever you want for $15 per game. This a great place for birthdays, or work events. The venue has plenty of parking, and if you're hungry there's a restaurant next door. One thing I know for sure: I'll be back!

Yelp
I loved it!! Came to celebrate my birthday with family. Our guide was funny and helpful (Phillip?) Clean facility and bathrooms, Plenary room for large groups and date nights.
google avatar

John B.

Yelp
Went here to celebrate my brother's birthday. We had an AXEcellent time. Ok, now that I got the corny axe joke out of the way... let's begin. Our instructor, Craig, was the truth! He went over everything in detail and even gave tips throughout to help us hit the bullseye. And by "us", I mean "me".
google avatar

Bell A.

Yelp
Professional axe thrower, y'all watch out. JK. I only hit the target like twice. One of which was on my very first try. Friendly staff and large area to accommodate a lot of people. There's also a bar if you need some liquid courage to throw an axe. Would recommend and come back. It's fun and competitive.
google avatar

Ty M.

Yelp
Went for date night and had a great time! It was a little smaller than I expected but hey, it was just us two! Loved everyone's positive and uplifting attitude especially because this was our first time. Definitely wear comfortable shoes! The bar was kinda small but they have a few items to choose from. We both ended up getting canned cocktails which ended up doing the trick so don't sleep on the can drinks. We missed the fire pit but would love to check it out next time
google avatar

Julia C.

Yelp
This is a great date night or group activity! Kelly was a great coach and Made the night enjoyable for everyone!

Yelp
My husband and I went to Urban Axes tonight for the first time. I knew they were there for quite some time but finally made it in. I am so glad we did. The booking process and waiver signing was super easy online. Upon arrival, check in was quick and the front desk employee advised us who our coach would be and when he would be out to get us. Our coach, Taylor, was awesome! He made the experience super fun and educational. He have us tips on our form and got us playing several different games. I didn't realize it would be so organized but it actually made it way more fun and competitive. The place was clean and had all covid restrictions in place. The bathrooms were clean. Although we did not order drinks from the bar, the beer and wine selection looked good. I would definitely return to this location and highly recommend it for a date night or an activity to do with friends.
google avatar

Olakunle O.

Yelp
Drinks? Check. Sharp, dangerous flying objects? Check. A great time? Check. Honestly, what can I say that hasn't been said? Throwing axes is a remarkably good time. Each time I've been, we've had a great instructor who took the time to show us a variety of throwing techniques and compensatory strategies. The latest was Archer (yeah, like the show) who even let us toss the giant fireman's axe. That was a first for me. Anyway, grab some friends or a date and head here. You won't regret it. Unless maybe you drop the axe on your toe after one too many drinks I guess.
google avatar

Danielle G.

Yelp
I visited for a second time and the experience was equally great! Alex was awesome and made the experience one to remember. I would definitely return! Craig was AMAZING!!! He was engaging and full of energy! He took his time to provide instruction, perfect your form, and show you ways to adjust! It was a great team outing and way to connect! I loved the beer and wine option and how we practiced for a competition. This is a great date night, staff outing, or competitive activity. I highly recommend!!! I would definitely return!

Jenn P.

Yelp
Oh this was so much fun! Decided to my partner here for his birthday. I made an online reservation at 9-10pm for 2. 6 people per station is allowed. If you come with less than 6 then they will add additional people to your station if there are any. There was only one other couple there with us which meant more game time. Our coach was Archer. He was awesome, very nice and gave us lots of tips and pointers. He made the experience all the more fun. They have a bar with beer, wine, and canned cocktails. They allow for you to BYO food, which we didn't do but it's a nice option. CLUTCHHHHH
google avatar

Kym R.

Yelp
Archer is the best!! First experience he made it great!! We came here after a tough class- team building with the co workers!! Just a fun event!!

Yelp
We did a corporate team building here last week! the team at Urban axes Baltimore CRUSHED it! they were so much fun, helpful and kept the team moving and laughing!! highly recommend!

Yelp
Urban Axes was the perfect Father's Day activity. You can bring your own food. They do serve spirits. My group of 7 booked the outside arena in advance. The coach was awesome and worked on our throws the whole time. The outside arena has seating and a high top table. There's also a fire pit. $40 a person for two hours. I will be back. Thanks for a great activity!
google avatar

Kenyetta C.

Yelp
This was my second time visiting and I had a great time. It was a double date. Our coach, Alex, was amazing and super hilarious! She made sure that we were thoroughly entertained and safely had fun! I definitely will be returning!
google avatar

Kendoll C.

Yelp
My husband's work scheduled a two hour friendly-competition throwing session as a team building activity, in which all the co-workers/spouses would be paired against each other in creative brackets, organized and managed by the staff of Urban Axes- Unsure about the booking process, or prices, but the waiver & training process was super easy-the waiver is managed online, signed before arriving to make getting started go faster-then upon arrival the 'throwing coaches' gave a quick run down of the rules, and we were ready to go! During the throwing experience, the coaches stay in the throwing areas, helping keep score, and give educational throwing tips to help our form as we threw-helping us get better as we went along. Compared to other throwing axes venues we've been to in Columbia, I think there are some aspects lacking, which put them sort of on the bottom of my 'let's go again list'- such as: - While they do offer a decent selection of MD craft beer variety, cocktails, and wine- everything is canned (so my initial thought 'that's a reasonable craft beer draft' turned to 'for a can?!' reaction)- I prefer the other venue selections of craft drafts and the ability to even pour our own from a tap wall - I did really enjoy the staff hanging out in the throwing area- spending the day with Taylor and CJ was a fantastic experience-the coaching, the jokes, it was a great ambiance to hang out...so sad there was no bulls eye bell- ring a ding ding?! I guess Baltimorians are more pro-skill, a bell would be too much, but I love the bell. - I felt the boards were a bit inconsistent-lane to lane was completely different throwing experiences-we've been other places where they change out boards more frequently, maybe this could have been done, not sure, but the quality of the lanes felt like a step down from some places we've been Overall, staff would get 5 stars;but compared to other axe throwing venues the overall vibe was a notch down to our Columbia, MD experiences. But a nice edition to the area of Baltimore. I know friends who are in and LOVE their league play- a nice edition to the community.

Yelp
I had a great time at Urban Axes celebrating a friend's birthday. The reservation and check-in process was extremely simplistic. The decor was fitting and the bar was very unique to include speciality beers. All of the staff persons were friendly, welcoming, and patient. The only con is parking. The venue shares a parking lot with a restaurant and some other places, thus, parking is limited and tight. This place is extremely therapeutic and highly recommend.
google avatar

Aly W.

Yelp
Where should I start? I love you guys? Maybe that's too forward? I was thrilled to come here for a team bonding event. The guys we worked with were hilarious. Please charge it to my heart and not my heart for forgetting y'all's names! From start to finish the team was clear in how to stay safe, make good throws, and have fun. I think the involvement of alcohol either makes your throws better or worse. That's it! The only accidents they ever have? You guessed it, splinters. I'm so excited to come back with a group of my friends! GAME ON!
google avatar

Moni M.

Yelp
I was looking for something to do over the weekend. Decided to try something new and I was not disappointed. Our teacher, Craig, was really cool and personable. This place does a good job at making sure the customers stay safe due to COVID. They also do a good job at keeping you safe and out of harms way since well, you're throwing axes. Craig made sure to help us with our form to make us better throwers and keep us from losing any fingers. I definitely recommend this. It's a fun thing to do with someone or a couple friends!
google avatar

Yelp
We were visiting our daughter and she wanted to go with us and her friends axe throwing so took us here. We had never done it before but our couch Conner did a great job teaching us some skills. We had competitions then a tournament. It was very fun and I highly recommend it! They also have other activities so there is something for everyone.
google avatar

Jackie A.

Yelp
We had a great time at Urban Axes. Our coach Connor was super helpful and friendly. The place was fun, great drink selection, and you can bring in food. I would recommend this place to anyone!

Mandy B.

Yelp
Great time, we came here for a work happy hour and had a blast! This was a fun place to hang out and socialize, while letting out some aggression, lol! This is a great spot for a small to large group of people to hang out. The coaches explain how to properly throw an axe and how to be safe while having fun, everyone who works here was super professional and friendly. They have a nice selection alcohol and you can also bring your own food and have catering options for anyone who plans ahead. Highly recommend! Parking - they have a large lot with plenty of free parking.
google avatar

Nancy R.

Yelp
We had such a great time here!!! Our Coach Corey was great, although I think he cheated on the scoring for my girlfriend. This was our first time doing this and we will definitely be back when we're in the Baltimore area!!!
google avatar

Tanya B.

Yelp
Had a great time throwing axes with Adam! He was professional and a lot of fun. Will certainly come back and highly recommend Urban Axes.
google avatar

Meghan K.

Yelp
We had such a great time here! Our coach was super helpful and made it so fun and low pressure but competitive at the same time. We threw in the outdoor space which was so cute and perfect for our group. We didn't realize there was a bar in there but they have an awesome bar with a ton of great options. We stayed for about an hour after our session just hanging out there. We can't wait to come back!
google avatar

Phillip S.

Yelp
Great location with off-street parking. Playing Inside or outside is an option. Super cool folks working there, coaching/helping/bar. Just go and have fun. We were 3 couples and we all said we would do it again. Great bar/bartenders too. Super fun.
google avatar

Emily E.

Yelp
Urban Axes was such an awesome experience! I have to give a shout-out to our amazing instructor Archer! He was so pleasant and fun to work with and ensured we not only learned the proper ace throwing techniques but had a fun time doing so. The space is very open and decorative. It has a fire pit outside in the front (nice), a bar located right next to the check-in area that serves a variety of wine, beers and canned cocktails; all of which are reasonably priced. They also have high top tables and plenty of seating while you wait for a lane to open and bathrooms located in the back. I definitely enjoyed my experience and think I may come back soon to continue improving my skills. This is great for large or small groups, just an all around good time!
google avatar

Morgan J.

Yelp
I had a pretty fun time. I do wish I had more freedom to throw with less restrictions, but I understand for safety. This is definitely a place that is strictly axe throwing, and less of a social thing like some DC locations I've been too. Still arguably the best axe throwing spot in baltimore!
google avatar

Rachel R.

Yelp
If you're reading this because you're wondering weather or not to try this, DO IT. I went for the first time as an impromptu outing for my birthday. It doesn't matter how strong you are you can do this. Our instructor was Phil and he took his time telling us how to throw but then also giving us notes on how to improve after throws. Rule #1 is listen to your instructor. Don't over think it and have fun. Be sure to wear cool loose fitting clothes because you may work up a sweat. I'd suggest wearing short sleeves too. I kept rolling up my sleeves. When you aren't throwing there's a bar near the front and they also sell merch at the front desk. The waiver is a little intimidating but they are allowing you to throw weapons. Everyone is required to be 21 that attends and they do check your ID before going in. I'll be adding this to fun outings/date nights.
google avatar

Hannah M.

Yelp
So much fun!! Our instructor Connor did a fantastic job teaching my boyfriend and I. We had so much fun competing against each other. Will definitely be back!
google avatar

Aakash S.

Yelp
Awesome venue and great management, coaches, and leadership running the place. Bar has plenty of beer and wine options and A LOT of space for big parties or groups. The actual experience of axe throwing was really fun. Would recommend calling ahead or going online to book AT LEAST 2 hours, since 1 isn't long enough I'm my opinion, would def come back
google avatar

Tania J.

Yelp
This was my second time and much like my first it was a great time. Connor was great, patient, encouraging and helpful. Most of all, fun!

Yelp
We visited on a Sunday which seemed somewhat quiet, but we had a fantastic time! Becs was our coach & she was absolutely amazing at teaching/guiding/adjusting our techniques to get us hitting the target! She really made it a fun first axe-throwing experience for us, and we will definitely be back again! The facility was brightly lit, comfortable & spacious. The bar had a great selection of beers, wines, and sodas, as well as a mead. I love that in the spirit of community, they had beers available from their next door neighbor, Monument Brewing. Again - super fun experience & don't forget to ask for Becs!

Jennifer A.

Yelp
We had a great time trying something new. Niara was an excellent coach! Perfect for a small group outing.
google avatar

Yelp
Date night with the husband. Kristen was our coach! We learned how to through then completed. It's 24 usd per hour! They put us in a group of six and we competed against other people. Bar with beer, wine, cocktails in a can. Bring your own food!! Definitely different and fun!! Also next to monument brewery so more drinking after and outside seating there as well!! Highly recommend and will definitely come back with a group of friends.
google avatar

Yelp
Came here to celebrate a birthday 2.23.19, and I cannot say enough positive things! First of all, they are extremely organized. Second of all, they have a bar (although no hard liquor FYI, just mixed drinks in a can, beer, soda, and wine). And lastly, our trainer, Ray, was THE BEST! He was so funny, he explained everything really well, he actually talked to our group and was very personable, and he just made the experience even better. I'm so glad that urban axes made my friend's party so memorable, and I can't wait to come back!
google avatar

Donnise A.

Yelp
Nick was amazing. He was very helpful and encouraging. He made it very fun even though all my axes wouldn't stick. Great job nick. 100% would recommend.
google avatar

Tiffani C.

Yelp
Fun event for me and my friends. I'll keep it simple. Pros: -Check-in was easy -Front Desk was friendly -Urban Axe has their own merch -Bar service was cool -Coach was great, and patient - Axe throwing was fun, even when you suck at it (If you suck, i suggest a tad bit more alcohol) -you can bring in food or have Homeslyce deliver to you like we did -clean restrooms Cons: -I can't really think of any. ‍ the staff at the facility are pretty chill and we plan on going again.
google avatar

Carolyn R.

Yelp
I went to urban axes on a Sunday evening for my friends birthday. There were 7 of us total and of that 2 of us had thrown axes before. At the front there is a bar that sells a ton of different beers and drinks in cans. Each group gets a coach to instruct on safety and direct the activity. They stay with you for the duration of the time you are there which is helpful. I have to admit I was a little nervous at first. Our coach was Fabio and was super nice and helpful and made sure that the inexperienced throwers like myself still had a good time. No need to be nervous because they have their safety down to a science. It was a lot of fun and I would highly recommend for a special occasion group event!

Yelp
We came here for Friday night and had a blast! It was the 5 of us in a group and a few days before, we reserved 90 minutes of a private lane for axe throwing. We put down a deposit of $70 and the rest of the payment was collected when we were there. It was $35/pp. While the website said someone would teach us how to throw axes, I didn't expect the instructor to stay with us all 90 minutes, so that was great. Our instructor was Dennis and he was great- he gave lots of great coaching feedback and clearly wanted us all to succeed and have fun at the same time. We played a round robin-style tournament amongst ourselves, which Dennis used to create seeds for an elimination tournament. While it turns out I didn't have some secret innate skill of throwing axes at a target, we all had a blast. Dennis also took a few group pictures of us at the end. Drinks were affordable- $22 for a bottle of wine, and they had a fun collection of other drinks. We even stayed after axe throwing at the bar for a bit just to hang out and catch up. My only complaint was that it was a little bit on the warm side inside, especially once we started throwing, but I tend to run hot so others will likely be comfortable. Everybody had a fantastic night, so two thumbs up to both Urban Axes and Dennis!
google avatar

Natalie 'Monita' E.

Yelp
We had a group of 5 and this was amazing! This was so much fun and social distancing us enforced. They also sell wine and beer. We paid for an hour and a half. This can be a friendly competition. When you get to your dock space you will have a coach with you the whole time. The coach will guide you and give you tips on how to throw the axe. Our coach was friendly and very helpful. She then set a game up for us to then end up doing a tournament. It was so much fun
google avatar

Yelp
Came to this amazing spot to celebrate our four year anniversary, and it was worth every penny! We loved our coach, we love the vibe, and we just loved the experience of trying something new. Can't wait to visit again! Thank you all so much for the memories!

Yelp
Who the hell thought to make axe throwing a thing? This exact thought attracted me to the activity and BOOM! I found Urban Axes. I was intrigued and I knew I wanted to participate. The research and information on the website is easy to access and pretty straightforward. Booking was simple. The waiver explains what you expect and how you can best protect yourself. I find that to be helpful and necessary, because there's a bar at the facility, so like...A LOT could go wrong LOL My friends and I came on a Saturday night and we had a BLAST! Our coach Ray was so dope. He was down-to-Earth and very patient. Particularly with me, 'cause I'm not as good at axe throwing as I thought I'd be. I kinda suck. Next time, I'm kicking ass! *Kicking axe! Each group gets a coach and he or she will spend lots of time teaching you the correct way to throw the axe and the best ways to avoid hurting yourself, your friends, and the coach. Important. Back to the bar. They sell local craft beer and I love that. Because this is a group activity, they sell packs of beer *and* bottles of wine. That's huge! They also sell cool colorful koozies, so I bought a green one to go with my beers. Back in the arena, there's wood furniture which is tagged up by graffiti and things like that. So cool. Lost of profanity and inappropriate quotes. Honestly, that's probably the best part LMAO. Reminiscent of the bathroom in high school. Two hours of fun, cool staff members, great music, and all the booze your heart desires. I mean, what else could you want? This is an awesome group outing. You definitely need to come. Thank you, Urban Axes.

Yelp
What a great experience! My friends and I arrived at what seemed to be the peak time. Even then, The staff at the front desk was quick and friendly. They were patient as well with us, as we were trying to figure out if another friend of ours would be joining our group. We hadn't made a reservation so we had to wait a little while for our turn. This wasn't a problem, though as there's ample seating room at picnic tables inside the venue. My friends and I grabbed a few drinks and caught up while we waited. When it was our turn, we were grouped with a few others at our station. Our coach was great at explaining the safety precautions and demonstrating what to do. This was markedly better than another axe throwing venue I went to prior to this. Then, we each paired up and had some practice time. After that, our coach led us through a game. I highly recommend this place for groups who want to do something different. I'll definitely be back!
