The Saddest Houston Restaurant Closings of 2024 | Eater Houston

"Owners announced in January that they had taken on "substantial debts" following the height of the COVID-19 pandemic and rising costs for supplies, labor, and food. They were able to pay some past-due bills and support their team, but ultimately it wasn’t enough to sustain the business; the landlord terminated the lease and the restaurant closed in January." - Brittany Britto Garley

Me and my girlfriend wanted a quick bite to eat and we weren't sure on what to get. We saw this place and it was on the way back home, and they had a lot of options so we stopped by. The portions were fairly big so we didn't end up finishing it all. The caesar salad was good, but maybe had a bit too much ranch. Getting a pulled pork sandwich was an interesting decision, but it actually tasted quite nice. Not a local bbq joint for meat quality obviously. The sandwich overall was nice. The bbq sauce was good. We got a mini kids pizza to share, and it was obviously a little pizza with not much going on for it. They also serve beer and wine, which I think is pretty neat.

Google
Wow! I love this place! The food is really tasty and it is plentiful and inexpensive! A very rare trifecta of good eats! I like the clean fresh atmosphere and friendly service. There is a good selection of basic soda stuff and fizzy water at the tap. Pickles and olives and pepperoncini at the bar too. I will be back for sure!

Google
Was here at 5:25 today and the lady helping me was on her phone talking g and texting someone while she was taking my order.. Rude and just unprofessional.. maybe she needs to fi d another line of work as far as the salad 🥗 they put so much dressing on it.. OMG really...

Google
GREAT BBQ burger! Thick burger meat, sweet bbq sauce, grilled onions, crispy bacon strips. French fries so crispy. Owner made sure my order was right. Very unbusy on a Saturday evening. Come on, y'all! It's a great place! Soups, sandwiches, salads, pizzas, burgers. What else do ya need?! 🥰

Google
I eat here every chance I get. I am not a salad eater usually but their salad dressings are absolutely incredible! I crave it! The whole office I work with loves their food. Super friendly service, delicious food with good ingredients. If you ever make a salad dressing recipe book, SIGN ME UP!

Google
Great place for yummy salads, soups, sandwiches. Service was fast too! There were 5 of us and we all got our separate orders back to back. Everyone thoroughly enjoyed their salads! I had to get a cup of their tomato basil soup too. It is very delicious there and it's been consistent all these years. 👍😁

Google
Have been eating at Urban Eatz for 8 years! The food has been consistently good. Their Pasta Fresca and sun-dried Tomato Penne are amazing! The owner, David is very nice and friendly, and customizes my food to make it spicy or add vegetables. The atmosphere is very laid back and not noisy. Have seen a lot of people working from here. Music is playing but not too loud. I certainly recommend this place if you are looking for a neighborhood restaurant or simply want to support a local business, which also happens to be a great eatery.

Google
I purchased a chicken Caesar salad for a friend remembering how good the food was years ago. Unfortunately, although the flavor was good, he discovered a chicken grizzle in his salad. He wasn’t able to enjoy the rest of the food, wondering whether there were more bones. Very disappointing, particularly since I suggested the place.the place was empty, but a few people came in while I waited for the order.

Yelp
The food is really good here! Very plentiful to have leftovers for later. I love the salads, pasta, & sandwiches. The sundried tomato penne pasta is good enough without chicken. Very clean place as well

Barb G.

Yelp
One of my favorite places to eat at the Eastside Plaza in Richardson. Always good food made fresh. I usually get a salad or one of their pasta dishes. Love to support family-owned businesses.

Yelp
We've been eating here since it opened and it's consistently good. I love their salads and their soups. My daughter loves their pasta dishes and her go to is the grilled chicken bow tie. I love their chicken tortilla & tomato bisque soup! The service is always friendly,
google avatar

Yelp
Urban Eatz in Richardson was pretty good. The chicken and the broccoli in the bow tie pasta were huge pieces. I wish it had been cut up more. The flavor was a little lacking. Quite the popular place though.

Yelp
How can you mess up my order TWICE?!?!!! First she forgot to give me the potato chips with my order.. I came back to get the chips and place another order and NOW she left off the avocado!!! She even looked at the order before handing it to me!!! I called and she had the nerve to ask AM I SUEE?!!! That's it.. forget this place!!!! THEY DON'T CARE!!!

Yelp
Wow! Great surprise! We were going to the Eisemann Center for an event, looking for a nearby place to eat. Friend suggested this place. The atmosphere was casual dining, order at a counter, get a pager, pager goes off, pick up your meal. Clean and nice, as if it was new and literally just opened! I got the jalapeño burger. Said it was 1/2 pounder... biggest 1/2 (meat) burger I've got, ever, for $12 with fries... however, I upgraded to onion rings. Not only was it big and tasty, the (beer batter) onion rings were great and big portion. Wife had the pull pork sandwich with fries. Again, big portions, great taste... especially for $10. Friends got pasta with chicken & pizza. Again, big portions, tasty and great pricing! We highly recommend this place, and we'll be back, soon!

Yelp
Stopped by for lunch while we were in the area and had this bad boy Buffalo chicken sandwich which was tasty but it could of used more Buffalo sauce it wasn't quite as coated as I liked. Fries were nice and crispy. My daughter enjoyed her kids meal chicken tenders they were seasoned well she almost ate it all. So much to the menu will definitely return and try a pasta dish they looked really good!

Yelp
Today was my 2nd time eating food from this restaurant. The food is consistently good. I had the California sandwich the first time, and the Southwestern Chicken sandwich today. The sandwiches and fries were delicious! The first time I had food from this restaurant, it was picked up by my sister-friend, so today was my first time going into the restaurant. The 2 stars are because of what I witnessed when I walked into the restaurant today. The man who worked the counter was at the sink, near the counter, brushing his teeth. BRUSHING HIS TEETH! Maybe some people are cool with that and may even brush their teeth in their kitchen sinks. I don't. So, bottom line, I don't care if the food tastes good. I will NEVER eat food from this restaurant again. The sandwiches and fries aren't the best I've ever had anyway. I've had better in cleaner restaurants. The dude didn't even wash his hands when he finished brushing his teeth. He wiped his mouth with his hand and walked right over to the counter to give me my takeout bag. Yuk!

Greg S.

Yelp
I like this place, and usually eat inside. However, today, I got takeout and was very disappointed in seeing melted Styrofoam on my fries. This is a health concern, and food service should use paper or foil to protect feom this happening. I recommend going to eat inside, but be wary if ordering takeout.

Yelp
Decided to come in with our youngest during lunch time. Ordered a salad since I was feeling it and the ingredients in the salad sounded bomb. I can not recall the name of the salad but it had grapes, mandarin and a vinaigrette dressing. It was my first time here my wife has been here before and I have to say that the salad was one of tue best ones I had mindful that I really don't eat salads like that.
google avatar

Paul K.

Yelp
Food is terrific. Menu is not real complicated, but it doesn't need to be... What they offer - they prepare very well. I've eaten there many times and the staff is always friendly no matter who happens to be working at the times I visit. Nice and casual, a comfortable place that reminds me of "a luncheonette". We live in Frisco and my wife and I find a way to stop there when we take trips to Dallas (which is pretty regularly). We could eat in Dallas or we could eat in Frisco, or we could eat somewhere along the way. We always plan our trip so that we stop in Richardson to dine at Urban Eatz. Yum!!!

Keeomi D.

Yelp
I ask for extra cream sauce and the owner Stingy with pasta sauce on the bow tie pasta, owner wanted to charge he guess $1.99.

Yelp
How have I never heard of this place before? We were looking for somewhere to grab a bite tonight and decided on Urban Eatz in Richardson. The menu looked tasty and affordable, so why not. I ordered a grilled chicken sandwich, hubs had a burger, son had a pizza. We were all really impressed with the flavor and fresh quality of our meals. The fries were delicious! I don't know how they make them with that crispy texture, I've never seen fries like that before. They were yum! We were happily satisfied with our meals and thought the prices were great. The employees were really nice and the place was very clean. It was such a pleasant meal and we can't wait to return.

Yelp
Went at a good time because the atmosphere was very laid back and relaxing, not overstimulating so I had some happy kids. The salad is big and filling and the sandwich was as my husband says, "good and fresh." Overall, a fast quick service meal.

Yelp
In short, this place is a bang for your buck while being incredibly tasty. I have always ordered the vegetarian sandwich with a cup of tomato basil soup, which always hits the spot. As a vegetarian, I could not ask for anything more. In the place itself, there are so many containers of pickles (crinkle-cut and spears), olives, and jalapeños which you can pack up and take to go as well. Yum... even recalling the experience makes my mouth water! The bread is crunchy on the outside and soft on the inside, and the inner filling is unlike anything I have had before - the mushrooms are perfect, cheese is melty, red peppers and zucchini make me want to eat more veggies since they're so delicious, and the pesto cream cheese makes the inside of the bread so soft and it's so tasty! Combine the sandwich with some soup... HEAVEN. I think I may go back and get it tomorrow again because I miss it... I don't usually sit inside, but it's nice - it's a very light vibe and would be perfect for a lunch meeting.

Yelp
The food was good vibe was chill the food to eat at if your wanting came on a Monday afternoon good place to study and get a quiet place to eat with decent food and a reasonable price

Terri J.

Yelp
We come here ever so often, and I am in love with their french fries! They also have a pasta dish, Chicken Picatta, that is so yummy! My husband loves the jalapeno burger! The staff work hard to keep the place clean and nice, and I always enjoy my brief chat with the person working the registered. Great customer service and great food!

Yelp
Came here the other night for dinner. Completely regret it. The food was so bad. I had the lasagna and garlic bread. The garlic bread didn't look like garlic bread and the lasagna was covered in oil. I tried to soak it up and take a few bites but it was truly awful. My son had the kids chicken strips and fries. He took a couple of bites and wouldn't eat anymore. He said it didn't taste good. I tasted his fries and they had an odd aftertaste. Waste of money. Won't be back. Food was not edible.
google avatar

Yelp
This place is filthy. My husband and I stopped by for lunch to try this place. We literally stuck to the table because it was so sticky. Kind of reminded me of being in Waffle House. The spouts on the tea dispensers had not been cleaned in some time. How do I know this? Because there were long strands of moldy filth hanging from the spouts. There is enough dust hanging off of the vents to make you consider masking up again if you suffer from dust allergies. If you do decide to try this place, dig in as soon as your food is ready, otherwise you might lose the opportunity to have warm food. Our "fresh out of the oven" pizza was served luke warm. Come on guys. Do better. Dallasites have a plethora of restaurants to choose from so it's easy to rule out places that have basic issues like these.
google avatar

Ryan B.

Yelp
I cannot recommend this place to anyone. The food was just not good. The worst part was definitely the chicken, it was so dry that it crumbled apart like dirt. Speaking of dirt, they didn't wash the lettuce very well. It tasted dirty and had a very weird aftertaste. The price wouldn't have been that hard to fork over if the food was decent but unfortunately the food wasn't up to par with the cost of the food. If you want to replicate their "signature" sandwich at home over cook your under seasoned chicken then slap It on some mediocre bread with some dirty lettuce. I will say the fries were okay but not enough to save the rest of my order.
google avatar

Lisa Y.

Yelp
I have been a fan of this place since 2002 when the owners had Oliver's Eatery on Frankford. Their chicken ranch salad is my favorite item on the menu but everything is good. The staff is friendly, the place is spacious, service is great, food is fresh. A huge shout out to for their group accommodations too. My mom's women's group had a game night at your restaurant. Lots of room for everyone. If you're looking for a place to host a book club, meet up, game night, bunco - this is your place!!!

Yelp
Came by Urban Eatz last fall with a big group of coworkers for a quick lunch and was decidedly whelmed by the experience. For the price point it's a quick and easy option for lunch, but I don't know that I'd come back again - I got one of their sandwich combos and the bread was tough and the fries were dry. I ate half the sandwich and took the other half to go and ended up chunking a few days later because it just wasn't worth reheating. Maybe I just didn't order the right thing - other people seemed pretty happy with their pastas and other dishes - but with the plethora of other options in this area, I just don't see myself returning to try any of them.

Yelp
It pains me to write a bad review, as past experiences with Urban Eatz have been great. My Swiss Mushroom Burger today took so long to come out, I had to approach the staff and point out seven other people, who ordered after me, received their food before me. The response was as predicted, "Well was their food less complicated to make?" 1) How is the customer to know what is "complicated"; 2) It shouldn't matter; and 3) If it is something truly "complicated" then advise the Customer upon ordering. I responded, "They ordered burgers... just like I did." Suddenly the burger appeared and I went back to rejoin my group. Based on past experience, I expected something delicious. The only part I could taste was the lettuce and red onions. I had to nearly drown it in steak sauce and yellow mustard to get any flavor. At first I thought it was just me, but the French Fries were perfect... so it was the burger. If I ever go back, I'll stick to the West Coast Club. It was delicious and came out quickly.

Yelp
Found this place completely spur-of-the-moment and was not disappointed... well... maybe just a little bit. First, the disappointing part. For reference, I ordered the Mushroom Swiss burger. The burger was cooked well, a decent size (especially considering it's basically a $10.00 burger), well-seasoned, and came with all the toppings: lettuce, tomato, red onions. DIY pickle spears, pickle chips, olives, and pepperoncinis can be added as well. The disappointing part was that my Mushroom Swiss had like 5, maybe 6 little mushroom slices on it. Considering the size of the burger, I feel like there should have been more mushrooms on there. Too many bites were essentially a swiss-cheeseburger. Other than that slightly minor bummer, everything else was great. The absolute best part of the meal were the fries!! They are miraculously crispy on the outside and well-cooked on the inside. What sort of sorcery is this?? The absolutely-delicious kind, that's what. This place is a fun little gem hidden away in a Business/Apartment/something structure.

Yelp
This is the last straw (of hair). This place is absolutely delicious. But they're not sanitary at all. I have been about 10 times and 3 of these times have I had hair in my food. I haven't visited in 4 months because last time I had hair in my food and I saw the person making my salad, not wearing gloves so I got super grossed out. Today, I ordered another salad, and again no one on the cook line wears gloves or beard nets. What do I find? Another hair. So done with this place and their lack of sanitation.

Yelp
I had not been to this restaurant since before Covid, but I always think if the restaurant survived during that time it's doing something right. I invited a friend to join me. We arrived at 12:15. The first thing that hit me when I entered the store was the smell of Fabuloso, not the smell of food. Not great, but I thought "what the heck, at least I know it's clean in here". But not so. We placed our order at the counter and were given two plastic glasses for drinks. Mine was wet and greasy. The condiment and napkin area was dirty. We picked a table on the upper deck. The table was greasy and no napkins are available to do your own wipe down. The mirror on the wall was covered in little kid hand prints. But the food was good! Salads were presented in the same large white bowls I remembered and contained ample "good stuff" not just a lot of lettuce. The were served with a package of breadsticks on the side..nice touch.

Yelp
Ate here today. There were 3 in our group. One person had the pulled pork sandwich, Asian Salad & I had the Santa Fe Salad. All yummy but the counter service could have been more friendly. I asked for extra tomatoes on my salad and my request was ignored. Would definitely go again.

Casey M.

Yelp
I come here a lot. The sandwiches and burgers are really good. I also like their soup
google avatar

Michelle M.

Yelp
I love the lasagna here! The food is always fast so it's super convenient. They have a wide array of food options
google avatar

Jay W.

Yelp
Food is still good. Customers are not required to mask. Employees are wearing them.
google avatar

Kaitlin T.

Yelp
This place is really close to Panera and honestly it is so much better than Panera. Everything I have had from here is really good and it is the perfect lunch spot and the prices are unbeatable. I definitely recommend giving it a try.
google avatar

Kirk K.

Yelp
Have eaten here in restaurant a couple of times. Ordered using a deliver service twice this week. Ordered their Bow Tie pasta with grilled chicken in a light cream sauce, mushrooms, and broccoli. I'm a big fan of a similar dish at Maggianos. Urban Eatz product is better!!! Obviously more reasonable as well. I can't say enough. Their Poblano Chile soup is also really good!!! Hats Off...keep up the good work!!!

Matthew K.

Yelp
Small from the outside but I came in and joined The Club; Club Sandwich that is Well prepared and tasty. Nice staff and pleasant. Clean inside with a laid back atmosphere. Would def eat here again. Convenient to office, residential and businesses but still a little off the beaten path. Go no by and give it a try and you will not leave empty or unsatisfied.A++++

Yelp
Each time I order food, I ask for crispy fries. This restaurant refuses to make the order the way I asked. Some guy working here told me, they don't cook the food that way because the food will become soggy. My food is soggy currently with them not cooking it the way I asked. So his explanation was worthless while ignoring that doing it YOUR way gets me the same results.I'm not sure what business takes money and tells a person we will cook your food the way we want to. I cannot support a business that cannot get something so simple wrong. Then, boast about it. Bad establishment, bad management, just bad overall.

Sheri L.

Yelp
First time eating here. Got the crispy chicken salad and it is amazing! So fresh and good. Tomatoes boiled eggs chicken almonds corn greens! Soooo good! Can't wait to come back and try more!
google avatar

Rachel R.

Yelp
Our church ordered take out for us during our training on Sunday. We had a large try of lasagna, some kind of green garlic bread and a Caesar salad. While I enjoyed the ricotta cheese filling in the lasagna, the sauce was very sweet. I was also off put by the green garlic bread because I didn't really know what to make of it. But, it was tasty. I would like to go to the actual restaurant and see what else they have on the menu and how their prices are. I would probably order something that had little to no red sauce.

Evan G.

Yelp
Love their crispy chicken protein for their salads! The sweet maple walnut salad was meh. Well i hate apple, i hate textures of apples, it's like something screeching when you're biting on to it. If they had the option to fully customize their salads on Doordash I might even rate it an 5.5 stars if I could! Ill come back for the caesar salad, but it looks like they dont even have the option to add croutons. You can only add one extra option on your salad on DoorDash so... Hopefully management reads this and allows more for full customization of their salad. Also the onion rings were good. The snickerdoodle was lame, but their chocolate chip cooking was amazing. The chocolate melted, freshly baked and tastes soooo good!
google avatar

Stefanie L.

Yelp
My mother and I stopped in here for lunch on a Friday afternoon. They have street or garage parking available. When you walk into the restaurant you order at the counter, take a buzzer and find a table. For my meal I ordered the southwest chicken salad and a cup of the tomato basil soup. I assumed the cup would be small. It was actually the size of a bowl! The salad itself was huge! I didn't even finish half of it. I had to get a Togo box for the rest. Everything in the salad tasted so fresh. I would definitely recommend stopping in here if looking for something healthy at a decent price!
google avatar

Yelp
Came here for lunch on a weekday. Ordered their Santa Fe salad. What's hot - Menu selection/variety. Covers a lot. There are sandwiches, soups, salads, wraps, combos, etc... Something for everyone. - Quality. My salad had thin slices of chicken, which I didn't like. I prefer chicken chunks. However, the salad itself was delish. Had all the ingredients listed on the menu. Good size portions for what you pay. - Self service. Gives you options of some sides to go with your meal, like pickles, jalapeños, olives, etc... You can choose your table and get the utensils you need. There's a bit more flexibility with self service. What's not - Sound. This place echoes and carries sound easily. Makes it difficult to have a conversation, especially when it's busy. - Self service. I'm not against self service, but there are issues that go with it. For example, the self service stations can get crowded easily. There are traffic jams of people. You're going back and forth several times. It's not a bad system, but there are downsides. - Layout. You order in a line, which isn't so bad. However, it's not easy to read their menu. Fortunately, there are some paper menus against the wall. My point is to be prepared to work to find out you're options. Final answer Would come back, but may not be a first choice.

Yelp
The food here is amazing i have been eating in here for years and so far the good is still amazing the service is super good the kind and the food gets super fast in ur table 10/10 really recommended.

Yelp
Yeah this is one of my favorites. Not only do they have badass salads, but also the sandwiches (any served on ciabatta), pizza + ranch, and pastas. Huge selection for lunch or dinner. I've been a fan since I discovered this joint earlier in the year, but I was also recently surprised by the catering service... Ordering food for 35 people is not a fun task. Food is a big deal in my family, so there's pressure to outperform on food selection for the work teams. I called the restaurant to make an order, and David (the owner) made it extremely easy for me. He made many suggestions for two different pastas (spaghetti and meatballs; grilled chicken bowtie), salad, breadsticks, and soups. Liam delivered the order on-time and in full stock of napkins, plates, plasticware and even serving spoons (do not take this for granted; many caterers do not provide this and if they do, it's not free). The feedback was AWESOME. More people asked me "who catered" than for any of the other 10+ catered meals we had that week! I can see a place like this doing well in downtown Dallas, and of course any location closer to my home!

Yelp
I have eaten at Urban Eatz twice, and I love the Sweet Maple Walnut Salad, each time, it was fresh, lettuce was crispy, overall it was delicious. My kids ordered pizza and spaghetti and they both loved their food, as well. I just wish I could go eat there more often, but since it's not close to where I live, I can only go when I am around the Richardson area.
google avatar

Sasha D.

Yelp
What a great find! Basically a modern Bennigan's or cafe with a full menu of salads, burgers, pizza and pastas. I had the Cesar with chicken and avocado - delicious! Hubs had the jalapeño cheddar burger and he keeps declaring how his mouth is on fire ( that means he is happy). Simple ambiance but perfect for grabbing a quick bite. Definitely will come back.

Kim H.

Yelp
This restaurant catered the high school volleyball banquet. The food was amazing! The lasagna was so awesome. The breadsticks and salad were also scrumptious! I would definitely ask Urban Eatz to cater an event with anything on their menu. My table talked about making a trip to Richardson just to eat at the restaurant.

Yelp
This is my 3rd visit here and every time I come for lunch they are super awesome and fast. Come try this place :-)

Caren K.

Yelp
My family and I love to eat here for lunch or dinner. The place has a variety of food to choose from, which is good since my family and I don't have the same taste. Whenever we come here, we order from basically every category (pasta, sandwich, burger, pizza, soup and salad). My Dad likes to eat the Roasted Vegetarian pizza and sometimes the BBQ Burger (my youngest sister loves this one). My youngest sister loves their Tuna Salad Sandwich (I think we came here 5 times because of it) and the Sundried Tomato Penne (I like to eat this too!). My other sister loves to get their Pesto Chicken Breast Pasta (I like this one too! The broccolis are on point!). Obviously, I tried different entrees. The ones I haven't mentioned that I like to eat are Pasta Fresca and Vegetarian Sandwich (I order this often). I like their Tomato Basil Soup. The Caesar Salad is good, but it has too much dressing for my liking. My Mom doesn't have a favorite yet (she's picky), but she liked the Vegetarian Sandwich and the Tuna Salad Sandwich.

S L.

Yelp
This place the WORST customer service. They constantly change their hours from day to day and are incredibly rude when they tell you they're closed. Tonight I came in at 750 and waited for several minutes for my boyfriend to arrive. At 755 we approach the counter the woman very sharply says, "we're closed." We say, "what?" She replies, "we close at 8." My phone is in my hand and tell her it's 7:56. She very rudely goes, "yeah but we turn the machines off at 7:55." We drove up from Dallas to have a fun little date night because we use to come here a lot when we started dating. This is the 5th time I've tried to order here and someone has been rude to me and they've been closed 2+ hours earlier than they are advertised on both their door and on all sites online. If they show such blatant disrespect to the customer face, who knows what they're doing behind the scenes.

Yelp
First time trying this place. It was okay. They tea wasn't sweet at all and the turkey burger was dry.

Yelp
Stopped in to a new restaurant that just opened on my side of town in the Eastside shopping center. First impressions, very nice space with large booths and plenty of seating. Very open and inviting. I joined a friend for lunch and we were among 6 other people in a restaurant that could easily fit 200. Nonetheless, the experience was good. As we approached the counter, the cashier asked us if we had been there before and we answered no as the place had just opened 2 days prior, but we were excited. She answered with "Oh, ok well everything is pretty good" Uh? Ok. After we took some time to go through the extensive menu, we ordered and were given buzzers to come pick up our food. We waited 25 minutes for our lunch and the manager hand-delivered the food and apologized for the wait. Well I had the Maple Nut Salad with Chicken which after tax and water to drink came to $10, wow, this better be a huge salad. Surprisingly, it didn't live up to its hefty price tag. It was more like a side salad with some slices of chicken on top. Oh well. My friend had the Bruschetta Margherita which again, at $10.50 should be pretty sizable and tasty. She said it was alright. We finished our lunch and left with less people in the place than when we had arrived. Urban Eatz, I really want to like you. I am rooting for this underdog to work out the kinks in service and presentation because there is a lot of potential here. Maybe I'll try it sometime again in the future.
