Family Owned Restaurants and Businesses Damaged In First Night of East Lake Street Riots | Eater Twin Cities

"A cozy taproom whose front doors were smashed and whose interior was looted this morning; I heard owners Jeff and Gita Zeitler voice frustration with the Minneapolis Police Department as useless “for quite some time” and anger at the vandals who created the chaos." - Joy Summers

Google
In town from Michigan and were looking for some fun things to do. This is a nice little, local winery that serves great wines and ciders. The owners provided great conversation and we had a great time! It's a nice little gem outside of the downtown area and I encourage everyone to support this small local business!!

Google
It was absolutely a pleasure coming in and meeting Jeff. If you're adventurous and not too married to styles of wine, this place is a must see. The Dandelion wine, black currant wine, red velvet melomwl, and strawberry rhubarb cider are must tries. Absolutely lovely time

Very nice owner and beautiful vocalist/guitarist/pianist tonight! Family friendly and warm super welcoming environment I would definitely return to and recommend. Wines and ciders very unique flavors!

Google
Wow! What a little gem. I've tried their ciders at past ciderfest events, but never actually stopped in until this past weekend. I can't believe I've missed this one! This is a new favorite. I visited on a beautiful Saturday recently and expected it to be jam packed. Surprisingly there was not a huge crowd. Our party of 4 instantly found a table. The inside is decorated nicely and very clean. The noise level wasn't bad and everyone seemed happy and chill. There was 1 person working behind the bar which seemed fine. No one was waiting long. There is not a parking lot, only on-street parking. We didn't have any trouble finding parking on a side block. This is typical of many businesses in the city. I ordered a semi-sweet cider which I loved. I also bought a bottle to take home which was not on tap. They also serve wine, but I did not try any. They also offered snacks (cheese, crackers, pizza). I inquired about gluten-free options and was told the entire place/menu is gluten-free. Love it!! This is definitely at the top of my list for a cider place.

Google
This is hands down the best wine in Minnesota handcrafted by the owner himself! 🍷Come out and support this amazing local gem. And if you come by twice… well, don’t be surprised if everyone knows your name. 😉

Taylor Y.

Google
Great cozy place with chill atmosphere and live string band playing. I'm surprised to find mead in the cities let along wine, mead and cider all in the same place!

Google
I bought a bottle as a Christmas gift but got it home to find out the bottle wasn’t quite sealed. I contacted the winery and they were happy to exchange the bottle and gave me a free sample for my trouble. So that and the fact they have an excellent selection of wines makes me totally recommend the place.

Google
Great experience here! The ambiance is so cute and warming. Such a lovely spot for a romantic date night, wine night with gals/ friends, etc. The twinkle lights add a nice touch! Live music was playing throughout the evening. The Owner was standing behind the bar when we arrived. We received very friendly and well informed service and knowledgeable answers to all of our wine/ mead related questions! I recommend the dandelion wine and mead. So yummy!

Yelp
Nice selection of ciders & wines + a mead. Some on tap & some bottled to take home. They also have non-alcoholic beverages on tap. They sell limited foods (all gluten-free). Friendly service & cute tasting room. You can buy tastings or a glass depending on what you want. Only open Thur, Fri & Sat.

Yelp
Urban Forage Winery and Cider House is a hidden gem of a winery located right in the heart of South Minneapolis. With an unassuming storefront of what looks like a house in the middle of an otherwise normal city block, you would never expect there to be a wine and cider making business occurring right inside those doors (and in the basement). They have a bunch of very unique flavors that seem to come from whatever they have received from their neighbors in the past few weeks which ends up with some really tasty flavors. You can order a flight of wine or cider, and I love cider so I had to go with the cider flight. They let you choose which ones you want so I chose a variety of the sweeter ones. The ciders were all absolutely delicious, and I am not a fan of a lot of ciders in the Minneapolis community because I feel they taste too much like beer, but these were truly good ciders. I believe my favorite was the honey one, but I may be mistaken since I'm writing this a little late! The waitress/owner was so kind to us. We told her we had never been there before, and she started bringing out some complementary samples for us to try some of the other stuff on the menu. I tried a beet wine which was surprisingly great as well as a non alcoholic cherry soda which was super tasty. They also sell some food, but it is mostly just typical brewery/cidery food of frozen food they'll cook for you and some pre-wrapped charcuterie boards. That being said, I was hungry, and still wanted some food anyway and the charcuterie board was surprisingly very tasty and filling. All the prices were very reasonable here and I really enjoyed my time, highly recommend anyone in the area to make a visit.

Yelp
Wine and cider are ok. DO NOT BRING YOUR DOGS. Dirty bowls horrible outside area and owner says the health department won't let dogs in which is a lie. It's their policy not the health department would appreciate people being honest. Minn health says dogs can be allowed in wineries and breweries that don't serve food.

Yelp
5 stars for the spirit behind urban forage. A previous reviewer did a great job summarizing how they value sustainability and community to obtain the fruit that soon becomes cider or wine. I totally love the idea of a business relying on urban foraging . The atmosphere is nice, too. We played a fierce game of battleship, sat outside for a while, it was nice. I am not a fan of sweet wines or ciders. Literally everything I tried (except for their dry white Frontenac) was on the way-too-sweet side for my liking. That was the general consensus between me and my partner. Street parking but we didn't have any issues on a Saturday late afternoon. I genuinely wish them well. They sell soaps and cute merch, plus alcohol slushees, as well.

Yelp
I have not actually been here yet but they came to a Science Museum event I attended so I was able to sample and learn. Things I learned: 1. They are called Urban Forage because they is exactly what they do. They don't own an orchard but instead, forage fruit from yards around the twin cities. 2. People are grateful for them to come and clean up their trees of unwanted fruit. 3. They have a list of over 100 homes they can pick fruit from. 4. Honey crisp apples make horrible wine - something about the sugar and density but I forget the details. 5. I tried cherry and pear wines and preferred the pear wine. Nice change of pace. I am adding a visit to their physical building to my Try These Collection.

Yelp
IDK why this place hasn't drawn more Yelp traffic. It's extremely interesting if you drink and want to know things. Basically, the gimmick is all sorts of plants, foraged and found throughout Minnesota, fermented into very funky and oddly flavored products. Meads, ciders, fruit wines, things with names you've never heard of. The good to great: - flights, which are absolutely a must given the deepest of product and flavor types - has food, including a very affordable cheese plate that is not anything special, but totally nibble able. - super sustainable and eco friendly - tastes you just won't get anywhere else. Juniper cider? Hopped blueberry cider? Rhubarb wine? Flower wine? Yes please and I'll take another. The loss of stars: Provide definitions, people! Don't just give me a menu that lists the same names you chalked on your wall. Tell me what it is, so that if it gets busy, I don't tie up your poor bartender giving me tastes till I find what I like. But please, come give these people business. Nothing else is like them and they need to survive!

Richa V.

Yelp
I love this place! It's small and cozy and service is always great! They have a great selection of wines and ciders for most tastes. I personally love the flights because you get to try their full variety. I love that each of the drinks tastes unique to show the breadth of flavors. They do trivia nights here as well and have lots of board games. Parking is relatively easy to find on the side streets.

Yelp
we came out of town and happened to find this place from a quick maps search. we came on a Saturday when they were playing live irish music and it was so fun. the bartender was helpful in guiding us. we didn't try the food, but be sure to try the rasberry wine!
google avatar

Jesse G.

Yelp
They have a very nice selection of wines ranging from sweet to dry. I bought a bottle as a Christmas gift only to find it was leaking due to a faulty seal. The winery was so understanding and gladly exchanged the bottle for one better sealed. And gave me a sample of my choice for my trouble. I totally recommend them. I also like the atmosphere here.

Yelp
This is a cozy place in Minneapolis where my partner and I enjoyed friendly and knowledgable service from the owner, Jeff. We tried a flight of wines and a flight of ciders and then had a glass of our favorites. The flights are generous -- we could have stopped there -- but we were enjoying the place, the music, and the company. The ciders and wines available here are made on site and include some unusual ingredients, such as carrot wine and herb cider. And Jeff was happy to share about his processes, the place's history, and the challenges of doing his business through the pandemic and the riots after George Floyd's killing. We are grateful he persevered. We will be coming back soon!

Yelp
Gita the co-owner was a spectacular in her recommendation and selection of wine. Enjoyed my time there and the great selection they had!

Yelp
Booked their space this past Sunday evening to host a surprise birthday party after closing. The owner and his wife were extremely hospitable and nice. Had catering and birthday cakes brought in from outside etc. The seating area was a lot nicer and spacious than I'd anticipated -- pictures don't do it justice. And all of the different slushie ciders/wines were sooo good. The maple oak and hopped cider were my personal favorites.
google avatar

Mia R.

Yelp
This is the place to be! The flights of wine and cider choices are mazing and need to be tried! They allow you to bring outside food, most places don't allow that and that adds to the greatness of this place. Come through, try some drinks out and support your local businesses. Highly recommended and Thursday nights are trivia what more do you want??!!

Yelp
I visited Urban Forage with some of my friends on a Friday night. They have a wide array of ciders and wines, and all of them were very reasonably priced. The bartender behind the counter was friendly and willing to let us try samples before ordering. However, the ambiance felt off. They have lots of seating and nice lighting, but it was too quiet in there! The music playing, while nice and relaxing, felt too mellow for a Friday evening (sounded like something you'd play at a coffee shop on a Sunday morning) and too soft. My friends and I almost felt like we couldn't talk too loudly or the whole bar would hear us. I don't say this to be nit picky, but maybe play some more lively music (and more loudly) to get your customers in the mood for a Friday night.

Yelp
Picked up a great haul for NYE! So far tried a spicy cider and the dandelion wine. The cider was fantastic. The spice (I believe ghost pepper) perfectly balanced the sweetness of the cider for a nice kick! The dandelion wine is so unique. It's almost a cliche, but it truly is very floral and earthy! Not to sweet, and tastes great chilled. I can't wait to try all the other unique wines that Urban Forage makes and hope we can do so in the taproom soon!

Yelp
Don't be deterred by the location. We almost missed it driving by, but I'm glad we didn't! It's in an industrial area. We walked in to a happy, yellow bar with warm wood on the floor. The bartender was so knowledgable and helpful. We tried their cider and loved it. Such a cute place, and I love that we were supporting local. Not a crazy spot, so It was perfect for me and my girlfriends to catch up over a drink. They have some pre-made cheese boards of sorts, but not much food beside that, so maybe don't come hungry. Will be back!

Yelp
Loved the wine and ciders flights giving me the ability to try several different flavors/types, like Carrot Wine and Hard Root Beer. The Peach Wine was my favorite and ended up purchasing a bottle to take home. Atmosphere is very laid back and there is plenty of room for groups to sit and play games. Not much food options (could bring your own snacks) if you're planning to stick around for awhile.

Tori R.

Yelp
Service was very friendly and kind! Ordered the wine flight and the staff was very helpful on recommending wines to my taste.

Yelp
I've become a fan of cider over the last few years so I stopped into this recently opened taproom on East Lake Street to see what they had to offer. I had a pleasant conversation with the owners and picked up a bottle of their cherry-apple cider, which came to about $14 with tax. I didn't stick around to have a drink on site, but wouldn't mind going back to try some of the other ciders they have (I've heard good things about the pear cider). The cherry-apple is tart and had a really nice flavor, not too overly sweet.

Yelp
Stopped by on a Saturday evening and the bar tender was the owner! It was so fun getting to know the master behind it all! Urban forage is unique since they forage for their fruits around the cities. For example, the rhubarb for their rhubarb wines are from neighbors. It's pretty interesting to hear about while enjoying the wine flight. Makes you really appreciate the hard work and creativity that is sitting in front of you! They have a selection of wines and ciders to pick from. I really enjoyed the rhubarb wine, very light and refreshing. I also loved the winter spice. It is a very popular drink in the winter since they warm it up. Other good things to know - they are gluten free, do live music and food trucks certain nights, and on Sundays do tours. Street parking available and easy to find.
google avatar

Chris L.

Yelp
Great chill place for a casual hang out. They make their own wine and ciders - the blackcurrant and cyder weremy favorite of the ciders. Friendly owner Jeff as well! They have two food items for snacking (cheese board and a gluten free cheese pizza) which I didn't try. Would suggest getting the wine or cider flight first and going from there.
google avatar

Yelp
Amazing and intimate place to come and enjoy self-care time. Nick was awesome and welcoming, love that it's right in my neighborhood! Great customer service!
google avatar

Megan F.

Yelp
The selection here is just the switch up I didn't know I needed! So many unique varieties of cider and wine, all of which were delicious. Also was so cozy and warm and a good selection of games, which is always a bonus for me!
google avatar

Claire T.

Yelp
What a great place! The bartenders/owners were so nice and friendly! Everyone was so inviting! The atmosphere was welcoming and relaxed. And bonus they have a Food Truck on site that varies each night!! The Sangria was amazing it's a combination of grape wine and Cyser Cinder! Wow is all I can say!! We will be back!

Yelp
Urban Forage is one of the most unique and endearing places to enjoy a drink in the Twin Cities. If you like good cider that doesn't taste like every other damn cider around in a comfortable, urban (get it) environment, this is the place for you. The decor is vibrant yet not presumptuous, with tasteful splashes of color and nice lighting. The doors above the bar are a great, cute-but-not kitschy touch. Adding to the friendly environment are the amicable, helpful staff. They are knowledgeable but again, not presumptuous. None of this is to even mention the awesome sustainability component from which they draw their name, which is very important to me as a consumer. And the cider itself? Absolutely divine. The blackcurrant is complex and surprising, but the standard dry cider is just as good if not better. Cider is not even my usual drink of choice, but these ones are too good to pass up. Check out Urban Forage asap.

Yelp
A REAL GEM! In Minneapolis! I really love the Local Wine, Cider & Mead here. This place raises the game for the Twin Cites!
google avatar

Danielle A.

Yelp
What a GREAT place! Very romantic, elevated ambiance and such superior tasting cider filled with cool people, music and games. Perfect for a Friday night friends meet up, post work drink or even a date.
google avatar

Yelp
Amazing local owned winery and cidery from fruits all foraged in the city. We had our baby shower here and the everyone was so friendly and accommodating. If you're looking to throw a party or shower they have great rates and aren't pushy. And their drinks are delicious. Support local, sustainable businesses!!
google avatar

Yelp
I brought in my excess rhubarb for urban forage to make into wine. Make sure you head in there and give it a try! I grew that rhubarb with care! I tasted a lovely pear cider and bought a number of bottles to try. I'm very intrigued by the carrot wine! The people who own urban forage are very nice. I had a lovely conversation with them and I highly recommend this place!

Camila S.

Yelp
Excellent little place! Wine was unique and delightful. Vibes are welcoming, cozy, and relaxing. Great for a cozy glass with a friend or date night. Owner is delightful! Thanks!
google avatar

Mike S.

Yelp
First time coming here. We tried two flights: one of cider and one of wine. They were all lovely and had wonderful finishes. The owner was also personable and helpful. Great place!
google avatar

Samwise K.

Yelp
Great service and wine. Friendly staff. The vin de pomme is amazing! If you are in the lake street area looking for food wine and cider brewed in house this is your place!
google avatar

Mike D.

Yelp
Very good cider and nice wines. Bartender/owner was very knowledgeable and educated us on the process of the operation.
google avatar

Emily S.

Yelp
We had such a fun time trying the different wine and cider flights that urban fridge had to offer! All the while we were participating in one of their trivia nights! It was free to play, and the prize for first place was a free drink on the house! Would recommend to anyone who likes wine or cider!
google avatar

Petter O.

Yelp
An amazing environment and wonderful wines and ciders. The management is very kind and generous.
google avatar

Kendra B.

Yelp
The cider was good, but we were so disappointed in the wines. Unfortunately the wines had a taste of rubbing alcohol and we weren't even able to finish them.

Sridhar D.

Yelp
Must visit place if you visit or live in twin cities. 100% organic hand made wines made from local fruits. Excellent product quality. Prime location near downtown Minneapolis. Very neat and Eco-friendly place. There is something for whole family. Kids loved the place for different games/activities. Very friendly and welcoming staff go above and beyond to make whole family experience to cherish. I would highly recommend this place for everyone to visit alone, with family, or planning an activity.
google avatar

Maddie M.

Yelp
The tour was great! The wine tasted good and very nice place! Will definitely revisit!

Yelp
I love finding a new cider place because I don't drink beer so in a time where you find a new brewery opening up left and right, this place is refreshing! The Cherry Blush cider was very good!!

Maranda B.

Yelp
I love this place. The people are really nice and knowledgable. They really know cider and cyser (this is the only place I've seen it available). The tap room is comfortable and welcoming. Parking is easy(ish) even for Lake Street. Come in and enjoy some refreshing and delicious cider or when available, cyser.

Jocelyn R.

Yelp
This is by far one of the worst experiences we've had at a winery. We were here for "The Office" trivia and a table full of white people accused us of cheating. We never once had our phones out and we, by the way, happen to be the only black customers in the winery. It's frustrating and you would hope different from an establishment in 2020, but unfortunately these kind of incidents are not uncommon. Highly discourage coming here while black, there are many good breweries/wineries/bars in the twin cities that are better spaces than this one. Please avoid this place, I would give it zero stars if I could.

Rachel M.

Yelp
Cozy neighborhood *non-beer* tap-room with some notable features: * family-friendly * wheelchair-accessible (via 1/2-story chair lift at front) * variety of drink options for those avoiding gluten, dairy, or alcohol * bike-rack out front * on the #21 bus-line, not far from the blue train line I came in on my own on a Sunday after the free architectural tour at the Saarinen church a few blocks away. I sat at the bar, where I enjoyed a flight ($11) of four of their on-tap ciders and a nice chat with Jeff, the owner. That day, they also had both a still wine and a sangria made from the grape varietal called Frontenac, which I learned was developed at the University of Minnesota. There were a couple of families with grandparents and young kids, and I noticed some shelves of board and card games at the back. A group that had held a meeting there was packing up extra tables and gear. Other nice touches: outlets for charging and hooks for purses/jackets installed under the bar. Overall, the atmosphere is cozy, with lots of warm natural wood and south-facing, sunny windows (an advantage for January!). There is no kitchen or food menu, but there is a small electric oven in the bar area. I forgot to ask about this - perhaps it's for pizzas? I noticed a Himalayan restaurant next door, and an Ethiopian one a couple blocks west towards the light-rail. So maybe call ahead to confirm it's cool to bring in your own food/snacks.

Margaret B.

Yelp
Urban Forage Winery and Cider House, located in Longfellow neighborhood on East Lake Street, is the best place to enjoy delicious local handcrafted ciders and wines, live music and trivia nights each Thursday. And if you're hungry, there are food trucks on weekends. It's that fun place to meet your friends or make new ones. See you soon.

Jamie M.

Yelp
This place is so cute!! Super great service, adorable vibes, calm atmosphere, and cozy couches! Various kinds of wines, ciders, And gluten free options! Definitely reasonably priced, recommend!

J F.

Yelp
The flight is delicious. Especially the gin botanical. We came here during the dumpling tour and it's been a great choice

Robert H.

Yelp
Stopped in on a snowy Sunday, had a tasting served by one of the owners. An excellent tasting, followed with a nice talk with the owner about the cidery and there philosophy for make big cider. If you like cider or are looking for something different I recommend giving it a try

Kevin H.

Yelp
Perfect cozy spot for a date night or to hangout with some friends. Had each of the 4 ciders offered that night and was very impressed on the quality and the range of flavors found. I will definitely be going back!

Laura N.

Yelp
The Sangria is amazing! It is such an intimate space and everyone is so friendly. What a lovely day.
