Where to Eat Near the Washington State Convention Center In Seattle | Eater Seattle

"In the ground floor of the Hyatt at Olive 8, ultra-chill farm-to-table bistro Urbane joins with local growers, ranches, breweries, and wineries to focus on hyper-seasonal ingredients. As a result, Chef Brian Pusztai’s menus change continually. The fish, whatever it happens to be, is your best bet, especially if it’s wild salmon or cod, and the local charcuterie and cheese plates, decorated with all sorts of fun little embellishments, are always inspired." - Meg van Huygen

This restaurant is a hidden gem inside the grocery store. The dishes are delicious and affordable. Additionally, they are bigger than Cazba’s. Moreover, there are desserts and bakery foods especially fresh barbari, I like. Highly recommended!

I had just finished my doctor's appointments and was on my way to catch the train when I was suddenly drawn in by the enticing aroma of freshly baked pastries. I knew I had to try one, although some of the flavors were too sweet for my taste. Still, it was a refreshing discovery that I couldn't resist. I'll definitely stop by again on my next appointment and sample some new pastries. The pastry chef even offered a complimentary bread tasting, fresh from the oven, which was absolutely delicious.

We ordered our wedding cake from this bakery, and we couldn't have been happier with the result! The cake looked exactly like the photo we shared with them and it was incredibly delicious and fresh.

Friendly environment, great foods and coffee. Can’t wait to try the dessert next time. Food prices are very reasonable.

Visiting Coquitlam decided to pick up a couple of grocery items, and needed to lunch before heading back to Vancouver. Ooohhhh….an attached restaurant! Perfect! This place has a good vibe, friendly staff…from the cashier to the bakery, to the deli counter ending at the restaurant section…we received warm attentive service. Love their fresh meat section and their ground lamb was wonderful. Their grocery deli section is decent but could have more variety. We tried their cream puff and coconut rollette ….it didn’t taste fresh. It didn’t taste as if it had been freshly baked that day. Perhaps had been previously prepared and refrigerated. The pastry had collected moisture instead of it being flakey and crisp, which indicates pre-refrigeration. I guess my standards for a bakery are quite high. Fresh baked goods daily. The restaurant. Even though the portion size and quality needs improvement….I have to be fair and acknowledge their affordable and reasonable menu pricing. You get what you pay for. Yup. That pretty much sums it up.

Google
I find this place very attractive as they have huge variety of dishes in the menu. I tried half of it and all is delicious.

Very beautifully decorated cake from the bakery, and also tasted amazing. I will always be ordering from here and have for the past 3 years. Definitely recommend.

Google
Urban Gate consistently delivers high-quality, delicious food. We placed a pickup order and a small side was accidentally left out, but they went above and beyond to make it right and delivered it to us—amazing service! Their food is always fresh and flavorful, and the attached grocery store is well-stocked with a wide variety of unique and quality items. Highly recommend!

Yelp
Food is great ,professional cashiers and a sweet lady chef. I am a very good cook but we go to urban gate 3 times a week. We always order Ash reshteh and Koobideh and rice. Our orders gets ready very quickly so we don't have to wait long. The persian bread in the bakery section called Barbari is wonderful.

Yelp
their foods not good .and you waste your money. Their hamburger smells a lot of meat and they probably didn't add any onions to it. The inside of the kebab was completely raw and they brought a vegetable stew without meat that is added with meat salt. Ultimately, their food is terrible and their products are very expensive. I recommend Persia to everyone for purchase.

Abolfazl M.

Yelp
The rice was terrible--hard as a rock. The overall quality was awful. I'm never going back there.

Yelp
Lots of cultural Iranian food and grocery items but they can be much bigger in the community if they carried wider varieties

Parviz F.

Yelp
I order some chelo Kabab and Jojeh Kabab for my son's birthday party yesterday. when I went to pick up the order the customer service was excellent. The food was so delicious. I have tried other restaurants but the quality of food and service was next to none. If you haven't tried it I will highly recommend

Yelp
Overall: Great food, great atmosphere! Highly recommend checking it out. Atmosphere: this restaurant is attached to the bazaar in the back which was something different and exciting. They had a bar that had a great set up and looked great. A little too dark I would say, but it was fine. Food: Yummy, yummy, yummy! They had traditional Persian food that just tasted amazing! In addition, they had other options such as burgers, sandwiches, pasta, wings, and much more. Having that variety was great because if someone didn't want to a get Persian meal, that had a wide variety of other choices! I had the beef/lamb kebab and it was great! The meat was super tender and moist. The rice was cooked just right and I don't know what salad dressing they used, but it was one of my favorite!! Highly recommend, great place. Service: Our server was fantastic! She engaged with us beyond just taking out order. She seemed genuinely engaged and did a great job of being attentive to what we needed. One of the best servers I've had in a while!

Yelp
Review for the grocery store. Cute little place with lots of food, bakery is awesome and the staff is very friendly. The manager however was patronizing. Usually food is pretty fresh but had some ice cream that tasted old.

Yelp
I think here in Coquitlam, you can find one of the best Persian restaurant. We ordered Kashkbademjan for appetizer, that was really good. If you are an eggplant lover, I really recommend that to you for appetizer. For main course, we ordered Vaziri Kebab and Chicken tahchin. They both came with salad and the taste was very good. They have really beautiful interior design with friendly waitresses as well. Behind of the restaurant, they have grocery and bakery. You can find very nice Persian cookies there.

Yelp
Nice place to visit : We ordered Calamari , Chicken Fingers and Kabob wings . For the Calamari and the chicken fingers everything was perfect as they were lightly breaded and well seasoned . The chicken wings plate was accompanied with rice and salad : first thing to notice is the quantity tha was a little bit smaller than what we were expecting (exactly 5 half wings) and the wings taste was average , rice was a bit dry even using the butter didnt really help while the salad was good and well dressed. Lovely people working there.

Yelp
Used to come here often. Loved the koobideh and deep fried pickles. They no longer have the pickles on their menu...and the kabobs shot up in price by like $4. The service was absolute shit last night. This girl took our order and never filled our waters. Came back with our meals...BEFORE our appy. She clearly forgot, so we asked what happened to the appy. She pretended it was on it's way. Once we finished our meals, that's when the appy arrived. She didn't take it off our bill or apologize. We are never returning. Too bad, this used to be a good place. Service sucks. Food was only okay.

Yelp
Pretty good here. My server was friendly and quick. She came around just enough to ensure my water was filled. Got the lamb shank. It was so tender, fall off the bone tender. It had enough flavor and was delicious. My food came out quick. They gave an ample amount of rice too. It was good, I may come back when I'm in the neighborhood.

Yelp
I felt like I needed to write an update. We've been back to urban gate a few times since and the quality of the food has gone down plus the service is not that great anymore. The kabobs have been cold or too dry. They keep this up they will lose nore customers. I'm gonna have to give them 3 stars at most. The pastry shop is still great though. Just go there and get some cream puffs!

Yelp
Love it and will return! We struggle for lunch date places (tired of browns, milestones, romers). Today we tried UG for Persian. We started with the eggplant dip dish. So yummy and filling. Then my hub and I shared the platter kabob dish (chicken steak and koobideh). It was pretty decent and reasonably price for the portion size. We also went into the grocery store attached to it. We bought pita bread and a big bag of green beans for $3.30. Sooo cheap and fresh!!!!
google avatar

Nissa B.

Yelp
This pub is strange due to the fact there is a grocery store attached. You can actually see into the grocery store from the pub. Not great. The service was bad. It is clear that the waitresses were hired for their looks not their minds. I sat at the bar for 10-15 minutes being ignored by one waitress after the next. Then one came over to flirt with the old men at the bar and after talking to them for several minutes she turned and said some thing like "oh did you want something?" As if it was crazy to expect service. Then a male bar tender interrupted and said "what can I get for you?" I didn't stay long.

Yelp
Big fan of this place! One of the best Persian restaurants in Great Vancouver! The appetizers are always amazing!

Yelp
Me and my boyfriend are always order food here. Their food is good but their salad is not fresh and their wings are not good. Sometimes the waitress judges you the way you look (not fancy) and not perform a good customer service. I mean We like you guys but you gotta step up.
google avatar

Ramina S.

Yelp
You know what, it's funny you would think with all the reviews a business would improve, but it's absolutely appalling. The service here deserves its own caliber for horrendous. The food has gone downhill in quality and the owner is an absolute nightmare. We will not be returning. I seriously suggest the better business's bureau association come pay this place a visit. If your going to ignore the customer complaints maybe someone with some authority best come in here and shake things up. The only reason they've managed to stay in business is because they are the only Persian restaurant and grocery store of its kind. Someone intelligent and well serviced be smart enough to open within the same area.. This place would sure be out of business.. And in good time they deserve to be shut down!

Yelp
Went here for dinner on a weekday. There was one hostess at the front, however she was taking payments for takeout and walked to the bar to get something. Took a little while to seat us.. not sure if they were short staffed. Food was good, nothing special. I decided to get the eggplant dip to try. I didn't like it at all but just thought I'd give it a try. The server was friendly and fast. They have daily drink specials and a bakery beside. Will come back for the bakery for sure. I love the cream rolls.

Yelp
I wish that there were more stars available only for this persian food treasure. They have the best persian food that I tried outside of Iran and believe me I've been to so many of them from europe to north america. Everythind is perfect in this trendy casual place with lots of screens, from their amazing presentation of foods to their tastes and for sure the high quality service.

Yelp
I went there today, I liked the restaurant decoration & style ( very high end & luxury). I liked the food & the friendly service. Would definitely go back again. Very reasonable price U can park near the mall's and walk for few minutes, or there is a parking spot near the restaurant
google avatar

Yelp
We went in for drinks and applies and had a great experience. I got a couple ceasars on special for $4 and tasted great. We also got yam fries and an eggplant dish. Eggplant dish was amazing and we really enjoyed the rich oriental flavours with mint, nuts and cream. Customer service was great and we would certainly go back.
google avatar

Yelp
The best persian restaurant in town in my opinion. Not only large portions, but also attention to details of the whole meal from the main order to accompanying salad to its dressing. The sports bar section is a place when games are on. Love it!
google avatar

Sahar M.

Yelp
I always order poutine from urban gate and the service is becoming worst and worst by the day. I get charged for more cheese curds because they never put enough and now they have put less. The fries were burnt and old and even after many complaints it is still poor service.

Yelp
After my second visit to Urban Gate I can definitely say that I'm a fan. New to Iranian food, this is a great place to try because of the friendly atmosphere and the translations into English of each different dish. Much appreciated! This past visit I tried the kabob sampler - one chicken, one beef and one beef/lamb sausage mix. I tried them with the dill rice. It's a LOT of food and I had quite a bit of leftovers for later. The price is on par for what you get. My only critique would be that a sauce would accompany the meat/rice well. Like a tzatziki sauce or something like that, but Iranian of course. This place gets filled up pretty fast so expect a short wait after 6:30pm. We also had the spinach/artichoke dip and it was one of the best I've ever had. Oh yeah, and if Iranian food is not your thing, there are plenty of other Western/Canadian choices. Enjoy!
google avatar

Mel A.

Yelp
The best I've ever had! The food was juicy, service was great. I asked for customized rice and my waitress was happy to do it! Big portions, reasonable pricing, inviting atmosphere and relaxing outdoor seating. I will definitely recommend this gem and come back. My new favourite Persian restaurant :) Highly recommended!

Yelp
Customer service is below ziro! The sellers seem to be very upset, and when we call, they talk very badly and angrily! I don't want to buy there anymore Because every time I shop there, I feel bad

Yelp
Fiance and I were in the area and looking for dinner. Saw that they had .49 cent wing deals. It was packed when we arrived around 8:30 pm. Service was okay, it was a bit busy the server didn't check on us very often. We had to wait a bit to receive our bill. Wings were good, my fiance loved their Buffalo Wings. I ordered the Lime and pepper and the Salt pepper. The lime and pepper had more hints of lime than pepper. Not the greatest wings in the world. I really can't complain for 49 cent wings.

Yelp
I've eaten at the Urban Gate perhaps 10 times now, with my most recent experience being take out. I really like their Persian dishes, and usually order one of them when I go. My favourite is the lamb chops - very well cooked and the flavours are great. The kabobs are also very good - I think I've tried all of them now. Not a big fan of the dill rice, but that's personal preference. I do wish the kitchen would learn how to grill their onions, though. Every time I go, I've asked for my onions to be grilled "well-done, but not burnt". Just about every time, they either burn them or the onions are practically raw (I think they were done right just once - and they were perfect!) other than that, the food is good. The value is also pretty good, as I can usually get two meals out of one entrée here. I've also tried the pastries from the store counter, and I really enjoy the baklava. I like the roll variety over the square one, but they are all quite good - even better when they're cold!
google avatar

Yelp
Fantastic food and friendly service! I don't typically write reviews but this place deserves a good one. I've eaten here several times when in Coquitlam...this is the place to go. I like the atmosphere of the restaurant, it's a nice place. They have both Persian and American/Canadian. I came here for the Persian food the drinks. I've had the jujeh, the barg and the tahchin. The jujeh kabob was nice and juicy and the well marinated. The barg was high quality meat however I'd ask for it to be slightly more rare next time. The tahchin is a must have also, very flavorful and great portion. Try their beer too, they have a great scotch ale! For desert, you can choose from dozens of fresh pastries...I would eat the cream puffs everyday if I could. Overall, Urban G is awesome and I'll for sure go back when I visit Canada.

Lovely Lollipop S.

Yelp
You can never ever get in touch with calling in either the restaurant and or the bakery because NO ONE picks up! They ask you to leave a message. When I do, they never call back. Their food is convenient being next to a mall we frequent but we are getting sick of dealing with this type of business where you can never get a hold of anyone to make reservations, to see if they have certain groceries or anything in between! Will never ever go back and or try with this restaurant/bakery. Waste of time!

Yelp
On Wednesday March 14th, I was at urban gate around 3pm. (There was only one more table in the whole Resturant, very quiet) My husband and I both ordered Persian food. Once my food arrived, I noticed that my BBQ tomato still had the sticker on it. I called over the waiter to show her the tomato, all she did was to go grab a bowl and asked me to place it in there and she brought me another tomato, which not only was not even cooked, it was still cold when I cut into it. Even though these things shouldn't happen, they sometimes do, all I expected was an apology.I saw the manager (chubby Caucasian lady) behind the bar looking in the kitchen window and saying, "really guys, the sticker is still on the tomato?" I not only expected her to come in and apologize, but for them to take the food off my bill! Not only no one came to apologize, I paid for the whole bill!

Yelp
good food, good service.. especially for Coquitlam. Highly recommended. Good mix of fusion of persian and modern food. Nice little grocery store too.
google avatar

Yelp
Omgomg sooooo goooood, the restaurant is beautiful, food is so affordable, big portioned and delicious! Staff is lovely, and the desert stand is heavenly too! I will be back and back!
google avatar

Scott K.

Yelp
Kitchen was really slow (30 minutes). The got the salad dressing wrong after all that delay. However, when it did arrive, the dip was very very tasty, and the salad dressing, although not the right dressing, it was really light yet flavorful. I would go back and I recommend this place. Just because of the good food.
google avatar

Ali E.

Yelp
Been here for three times and I am giving them a cautious 4-star rating. Their food is generally good and service is decent. Its just consistency that concerns me. I am hopeful that I won't take back my stars after next visit.

Taphanie S.

Yelp
I wish I could give this place negative stars! Not only was the food DISGUSTING, but it made my husband, myself, and our ONE YEAR OLD, all sick. I called and complained and they told me "all I can do is gift you a certificate to get 1 free meal (of the same thing i got only) " even though i paid $80 Service was barely mediocre, manager was absolute garbage, after arguing back and forth for 30 mins he agreed to refund all of what made us all sick, so we go in, AND HE SAYS HE ONLY AGREED TO REFUND THE ONE THING! Please save urself a night with your head in a toilet, I wish i had read the reviews before I went. I will never go back, and i would never recommend this place to anyone!

Tooba N.

Yelp
It's a hit or miss for the resturaunt. Koobideh is too dry and not juicy but is semi okay on other days. They have had decent wings on wings night in the past when I've been. Servers are good and the bar atmosphere is nice for a date night, especially out on the patio. However love the grocery store - the marinated meats, packaged soups (ash e reshteh) ready for take out and bakery selection of cakes and cookies is perfect!
google avatar

Yelp
Our visit was late night on a Thurs for a party of ten. It wasn't too busy so we were seated and seen to immediately. Our server saw to our needs with decent speed and care. The parking was convenient as there's a parade behind the restaurant which leads directly into a small grocer attached to Urban Gate. There's also some parallel street parking. Cuisine wise everything tasted very good! I split a Bellini with my partner since it was on special, and I had a traditional Persian Eggplant dip appetizer. For $11 it was actually quite large. My partner got the kebab sampler. Out of the kebabs, our favourite was the pork variation. This place has a modern lounge-like vibe with many regulars. It's well maintained and has lots of potential.
google avatar

Sydney H.

Yelp
The overall service and standard of food is not great. I order the same pasta dish every time and more often than not I get the wrong order. The severs are not the friendliest. Sometimes I have to argue with them, as half the time I am charged for veggies and the other half I am not. After getting my meal wrong for the last time I had to ask for me meal to be compensated at which point he sever just looked at me and left, the manager finally showed up and gave me a gift card for not even the full amount of my order. That is beyond insulting and overall business practice. Now that I have used my gift card. I will NEVER purchase take out from this establishment again. Very disappointing.

Nicole C.

Yelp
Went here with a group of friends for lunch because we wanted persian food. Came to see it was half restaurant and half grocery store.. Odd mix but I guess it's cool. They also are a mix of white&persian food. It was a slow period at the restaurant but it still took 5 minutes to be seated... There were a million other places they could have seated us right away but we still had to wait. The food was good but the service was horrible. It took me choking on a piece of rice coughing loudly to get a refill because they sat us in a corner and couldn't see us.. Probably too busy eating in the back where all the customers could see them (first thing I noticed walking into the place). Grocery store was nice.. Their meat section was very organized and they have a lot of good looking desserts!
google avatar

Ben C.

Yelp
Modern decor and free parking all around - It looked promising. We were seated for 40 minutes without service. Out of frustration, I decided to grab menus for us to get the ball rolling. Servers passed by and we asked to place our orders a few times but even that didn't happend for another 20 minutes. Fast forward another 30 minutes: no food, no water, no utensils. We decided to leave. It's Friday night - the big money maker for a sportsbar like this. There were 2 servers for a full sized restaurant and one hostess. This is poor management. On top of that, regulars that walked in and went straight to the bar, got drinks right away. Thiis happend over and over while we sat for an hour and a half with nothing. Simply unacceptable.
google avatar

Andrew Y.

Yelp
The restaurant here is like if Cactus Club married a Persian restaurant. Definitely not what I expected when my Persian friends told me to check it out when I asked where I could get a bite to eat. Cool decor, trendy vibe, and nice looking bar. The food was pretty good, lamb was more than decent, and the servings were pretty big. I liked it, I'd definitely come here again. Not much to say about the grocery store part of Urban Gate. I asked them if they had lamb, and they said they didn't get their delivery yet. You'd think they'd have a huge supply with the demographic they serve. I bought some stuff from the bakery. I have no clue what I bought, but it was delicious.

B Y.

Yelp
Our Iranian friends took us out to Urban Gate for Persian/Iranian lunch. The first thing I noticed was the huge waterfall mirror just behind the bar. It's a sizeable pub style restaurant. You are greeted by a very polite Iranian hostess. We were given the opportunity to pick and choose when we wanted to sit. The menu caters to everyone - Persian/Iranian food as well as western food fare - wings, nacho, burgers, etc. Menu is very well laid out with a detailed description of the large variety of menu choices. Being our first time, we let our Iranian friends order for us. We had the Persian Yogurt, Shirazy salad, Urban Caesar, Persian Sampler - chicken, lamb and beef and rice. Everything was PHENOMINAL. My favourite dishes were the tomato salad and lamb kabobs. I ordered coffee with my meal and it was very strong but NOT bitter just the way I like it! The waitress/hostess were very attentive and alert! Unlike other restaurants, they were also very very polite saying merci and the time. I'm starting to think the Iranian language has a French influence. The décor is out of this world! We sat in the back corner with 2 fireplaces hung high on the wall. It was definitely nice and warm especially on a cold day like today. The tables are spaciously laid out. Did I forget, there are flat panel TV's hung from the ceiling throughout the restaurant. There is also a small Persian/Iranian market attached to the restaurant. Definitely a great concept! I highly recommend you try this restaurant for lunch or dinner.

Yaser K.

Yelp
The restaurant has got a single server and he seemed too busy with all else going on in the restaurant to realize my food was sitting on the kitchen counter for 10 min. Once they finally came, they were cold and I returned them. The new order only came in after another 10 min. But they were done just perfectly and no arguments there. The shishlik was essentially 4 pieces of very small T-bone steak, very dry and tasted nothing like a shishlik. The lamb chops were good but the meat was still a little dry. The food presentation was excellent and I wish they only tasted just as good. Overall, will I come here again? Not likely.

Yelp
So...probably the last update I'm going to do on this place, unless something extraordinary happens. I stand by my other two reviews. The grocery part is fantastic for very unique Middle Eastern/Mediterranean food finds if you live in the area like I do and the bakery section is great, cheap fix for an otherwise expensive sweet tooth craving. They still use good quality, fresh cream in a lot of their pastries. Also, if you catch a good sale, you can get pretty good deals on dairy and meats. Fresh produce, not so much. I find the quality to be somewhat lacking. Might also be because I'm not a Chinese grandmother who goes to "market" really early in the morning. I get the feeling it's slim pickins whenever I go past 5PM. The restaurant part? You need to take it with a grain of salt. It definitely is one of those schizophrenic neighbourhood joints that just somehow works. Sometimes it's a downtown bar lounge, sometimes a Canadian pub, other times a Persian restaurant. Also other times when I feel like I just walked into my Persian best friend's grandmother's dining room when they're having a reunion. Nobody knows what the hell this place is but it just works. Case in point, I ordered honey garlic chicken wings with blue cheese dip last night. I got (positively...) teriyaki wings with ranch dip. It was still great for a late night deep fried craving. Service could be better but most of their food is really not bad. I'd still trek all the way to North Van for great Persian food. So chill, don't set the bar high, and enjoy it for what it is, a quick and easy choice in the neighbourhood if you're hungry.
google avatar

Jenna L.

Yelp
I actually only went to the market next door, not the restaurant. But heard it is owned by the same ppl. Anyways, I love the Persian dates and I can find them here! They have a really reasonably priced desserts inside the market, which the lady told me they make it fresh each day. They've got this huge roll cake for $11.95! It looks great, and something I can pick up and take it to housewarming party. The desserts are very good, I wasn't sure what the flavor would be like, maybe some spice that I wasn't so sure of, so thought I try some cookies and puff pastries. They are not overpowering at all, though some I can taste something different but nothing I can't take. Next time I want to try more desserts! The whipping cream they use is fresh so the puff was very good.

Yelp
Great ambiance like no other Persian restaurant. Very modern and hip with a variety of different foods including burgers and other pub foods. The persian and presentation were great and the service was very friendly. I recommend the calamari for starters and the Persian sample player for the main corse. $4 Canadian on tap.
google avatar

Rosanna T.

Yelp
I won't comment much on the ambience. The booth was cozy. That's all I'm going to say! The food though was delicious! We started off with Kashke Bademjan which was a grilled eggplant dip. It was like an exercise for my taste buds with the crispy onions, soft eggplant, and goat cheese like taste of the kashk (Wikipedia says it's like sour cream but this was beyond sour cream) served with lavash. I ordered the chicken and ground beef/lamb kebabs. They were cooked perfectly and juicy. There was so much food! The rice was cooked perfectly and was flavourful. My only disappointment was the bakery portion of the restaurant. I bought a number of cookies and they charged by weight. A bunch of cookies cost me $9.50. The chickpea cookies were not my favorite. The texture was good but I wasn't digging the flavour. Overall, I would definitely come back. There weren't many people there, but my friend says it's a popular place for takeout. I would be willing to do either or again.
