Best Things to Eat and Drink at Downtown San Jose’s San Pedro Square Market - Eater SF

"For your Indo-Nepali cuisine fix head over to Urban Momo. With a long history of fusion, Nepal has incorporated cooking elements from its neighbors for centuries, embracing Indian spices and Chinese cooking techniques. Fittingly, Urban Momo’s chefs have cooked their way across Nepal and the Himalayas. We recommend the namesake dish. Momo are steamed Napalese dumplings stuffed with minced veggies or ground meat. Make sure to eat them along with achaar, a spicy full-bodied dipping sauce. Accompany your momo with a bowl of gorkali chili, a pleasing mixture of stir fry vegetables, meat, and spices in a robust sauce." - Johanna Harlow

Google
I love Momo. This place makes them quite well. They also have a variety of other Indian/Nepali food. We tried their Vegetarian Momo Chili and the Gobi Manchurian. The Manchurian was nice and crispy, the Momo really well made. Definitely must try if you're in the Market.

Love coming here! Tastes just like at home (: Plenty of gluten-free options for this with food sensitivities!

Google
Great food, lot of vegetarian options, we took food and sat outside enjoying the Cinco de Mayo festivities with live music in San Pedro Square market.

Google
We go here very frequently. Our favorites are Veg Chow Mein, Gobi Manchurian, Veg Paneer Momo, Chicken Kothe momo, Veg fried rice! This restaurant is located in San Padro Square - so Ambiance is very happening and romantic at the same time.

The first dish I tried is Chicken Biryani over Grubhub. It was hard undercooked. I could not finish it. My stomach started hurting after 2 hours.

Google
This place is located inside San Pedro square market. Lovely atmosphere. We ordered Paneer momos, Veg chowmein, some fries and Manchurian. Fries were super crispy and delicious. Veg chowmein was okay. Manchurian was my favorite. We went pretty early there and still it took more than half an hour.

Google
I had chiken biryani, I liked the taste. The rice was spicy and flavorful and the chicken was well marinated and soft. On another visit I tried their mixed Shezwan fried rice, the fried rice was good but they one small container of the Shezwan sauce which is not sufficient for the full dish. The fried rice had a good combination of veggies, eggs and chicken.

Google
Delicious food! We tried their veg chowmein and paneer momo and loved it. Located inside San Pedro square, this place gets super busy so if you are someone who doesn’t like to wait for food, then you may get disappointed with the service. They get a lot of takeout orders too, so it takes time for your order to arrive so go in early if you plan to eat here.

Yelp
I ordered the Chicken Vindaloo with the garlic naan. It was amazing. It was seasoned very well and there's a kick of spiciness that that's kicks the flavor profile up a notch. I also ordered the chicken Momo. It was good also. I didn't really like the sauce that accompanied it. I ordered the tikka masala chicken wings and I didn't like those. It had too much sauce and it tasted over saturated. But the Chicken Vindaloo is a 10/10

Yelp
Momos are absolutely amazing here! Juicy, perfectly springy wrapper, and full of flavor. There is a bit of a wait - 15 min for me but the staff were definitely aware I was pressed for time and sped it up. I would not hesitate to come here again as long as I have the time to wait for these fresh momos to be steamed.

Yelp
This review is quite a bit later than my actual visit. While at San Pedro Square, I chose to go back to them since they have quite a few vegetarian items. I got the garlic tikka fries and paneer tikka masala. Garlic tikka fries: Very garlicky and also has onions on it, but other than it being maybe more garlicky than my preference, I thought the fries themselves were good and nicely crispy. Paneer tikka masala: I actually felt there was not enough rice relative to the curry, but on the flip side it means they're generous with the curry. It was good, savory, though I can't say anything was particularly unique about it. When we went back to get a lid for the leftovers, the worker already guessed correctly what we were wanting, so I thought that was impressive that they could figure that out even before we said anything.

Yelp
A hidden gem at San Pedro Square! Not sure how I never tried this place before out of all the numerous times I've been here. But finally got down to it, and boy it was worth it! FOOD: ---------- I would describe the food as a combination between Chinese and Indian influences, flavor wise. First of all, had to try the *Chicken Momos* for which they are famous. And rightly so! Deliciously stuffed with a solid ratio of meat to veggie, and filled with delightful herbs and spices. Really supple and tasty. Their *Chicken Chow Mein* reminds me of Singapore style chow mein. Great taste, good meat/veggie to noodle ratio, and super filling, which is great when you have hungry hungry people with you. We were recommended the *Chicken Tikka Masala* which I thought might be a standard version, but this one really punched my mouth with superb flavor. The portion was very generous and I couldn't stop stuffing myself with this dish. SERVICE/AMBIANCE: ----------------------------- Service was great and they gave excellent recommendations. Ambiance is pretty vibrant on the back side of the market without being too rowdy. This is the calmer side of San Pedro Square so you won't be disturbed by (too many) drunken interruptions. TIP: You can always order to go, so that you can pack up the leftovers even after you eat here. DATE TIP: Definitely a great place to order and share lots of tasty morsels. That to-go box will come in handy so you and your date don't overstuff yourself!

Yelp
I have ordered previously from this restaurant. This time we are at San Pedro Square. The food was excellent. A nice kick of spice as well. I wish the chicken momo had a little less turmeric. Earlier I ordered the gobhi Manchurian for a lunch party and it was very good as well. My favorite go to place for Nepali food in San Jose.
google avatar

Yelp
I had the Szechuan vegetable fried rice and I really enjoyed it, especially the spice level. It's located inside the San Pedro square market area, so it's a good place to grab a quick bite if you're in the area. The prices are pretty good and it's a pretty convenient spot for takeout as well.
google avatar

Yelp
Gobi Manchurian was good on two separate occasions, so I look forward to the next time. I can't say the same for the Chicken Tikka Kebab though. Some of the pieces were dry and burnt. Hopefully this was just an outlier.
google avatar

Yelp
Love the stir fry noodles and tandoori chicken . This food is must try. Service is fast depending on what you order and how busy it is. Avoid peak rush hours during lunch time 12-1 pm. Ambiance is loud as it is located inside San Pedro square market.

Yelp
Stopped by here during Fanime! It's located in the San Pedro Square Market. Since it's a food court, it WILL get quite busy during peak hours on the weekends, especially if there's a holiday or an event going on (aka Fanime lol). There's seating inside (limited) and some seating outside too. Just grab a table and send your people out to order food. Most businesses here will either text you or have a buzzer notify you when your food is ready. For our dinner, we got the: 1) Chicken Momos: -These are Nepali dumplings served with their traditional dipping sauce, achaar. This is apparently a South Asian pickle sauce. It does have a slight sourness to it, from the fact that it's pickled and it gives a refreshing flavor to the food. -The dumplings are nice and juicy with moist meat inside. Exterior was not too delicate and not too thick or dry either. Can't go wrong with some solid dumplings. 2) Paneer Tikka Masala: -These are grilled cheese cubes served in their red, creamy sauce. -This has a slight sweetness and spiciness to it. -I feel like you can go wrong with any form of cheese dish. What is this if not another form of mozzarella stick? Though not as gooey, it's still pretty good. -Probably my favorite of the 3 that we ordered. 3) Szechuan Mixed Fried Rice: -This comes with chicken, scrambled eggs, veggies, spicy sichuan peppers, and garlic. -Very flavorful rice that packs a punch and lingering heat. Actually decently spicy. -Good amount of protein mixed into the fried rice. I think my only qualm with it (and I'm not sure if it's supposed to be like this), but the fried rice texture was a bit soggy and gooey. Not bad, but became a bit heavy to eat (probably due to the oiliness). Decently unique and flavorful food in DT SJ within walking distance of the convention center!

Yelp
Absolutely satisfied with Urban Momo and their offerings. I am also a bit skeptical when it comes to spice levels at any restaurant because they have to appease to the common tolerance but my main take away from Urban Momo is that they use their spices authentically and generously. I love it to pack some heat and my selection definitely did. Plenty of dishes to choose from, with healthy serving portions. I ordered thru a delivery service and the packaging were nicely contained and serve as a serving dish as well (no dishes were washed that night). Can't wait to explore the menu more.

Yelp
Always a good choice when in San Jose. Momos here with the achar are really good. The chicken cowmein ( I order spicy) is super good and nicely made spicy to order with some extra Thai chilies. The ambience at San Pedro Square is always fun especially when they have live music. At time it does take a little longer than most food spots here, but the momo does have to be cooked for the right amount of time so it can be just right.

Yelp
SERVICE - located inside San Pedro Square Market - parking garages or street parking nearby - plenty of indoor and outdoor seating - order at counter and then take buzzer if eating in or doing takeout - food takes about 15 minutes to prepare - ambiance good for casual meal - restrooms inside and outside market MENU - wide selection of Nepali momos, noodles, and fried rice - vegan and gluten free options marked - average price ($15 per entree) FOOD - vegan momo chili (8/10): six fried vegetable filled momos coated in sweet and spicy chili sauce with bell peppers and onions. This dish tastes like a cross between Gobi Manchurian and momos. The sauce is sticky and spicy with just the right hint of sweetness. I liked how the momo skins were still crispy and did not get soggy with the sauce. WOULD I GO BACK? Yes! These momos were some of the better ones that I have had
google avatar

Roxy C.

Yelp
Way too salty, too much seasoning and turns out the use MSG!!! I'm still super thirsty few hours later!
google avatar

Akbir K.

Yelp
Food was amazing - i ordered gobhi manchurian and paneer with rice - spice level was as i ordered - will definitely order again or come and it ( this was delivery order)

Piyusha G.

Yelp
Everything was good i tried veg fried momos and it was yum and service was ok and ambience was good a happy ending place

Yelp
Simple, yet enjoyable food. The chicken momos (dumplings) are a fairly large size and come with two sauces. One just spicy but not too tasty and the other that had a curry flavor. Food came out fairly quickly and they provide a buzzer so you can wander the rest of the food court stalls.
google avatar

Drea C.

Yelp
This was sooooo good! The tikka masala and the butter chicken is probably some of the best I've ever had outside of a restaurant I went to in Kathmandu! And The momos tasted perfect! It brought me right back. The naan was crisp to perfection
google avatar

Chloe L.

Yelp
The steamed chicken momo's were so good! So flavorful and they're pretty hefty too. Loved the sauces too. I want to try more Indo Nepali cuisine for sure!
google avatar

Jeff M.

Yelp
This review is specifically for the Chicken Momos. The momos were super juicy. Every bite had a ton of flavor, and the meat in the mom had a unique seasoning that had a slight curry spice taste. I'll definitely come back to try the rest of the dishes here!
google avatar

Grace X.

Yelp
I had lunch from here delivered to my office twice, and both times it was pretty good. Plenty of well labelled vegan options- I had the fried vegan momos and veggie chowmein (office lunch menu was limited). The momo filling was really good but I think they probably would've been better steamed rather than fried. Wasn't a huge fan of either of the dipping sauces they came with either. Veggie chowmein was tasty as well but could've used more veggies. Would love to come in person and taste the rest of the menu!
google avatar

Sumedha D.

Yelp
We had their tandoori chicken momo and veg momo and it was amazing! Their regular momos were not as good. I like their veg and chicken fried rice as well as noodles. Their service was good but took a little longer. They're very popular.

Yelp
Urban Momo is a Nepalese food counter within the larger San Pedro Market. This cuisine has Indian, Chinese, Burmese, and other influences (or Asian Fusion), of which Gayle and I love curry and spice. My choice was the Chicken Biryani (Indian rice dish including vegetables & rice) was well placed, while Gayle raved about her Paneer Tikka Masala (Grilled cheese cubes in red creamy sauce). Although beer would have been an excellent pairing with my dish, I chose lemonade to allow the sweetness to supplement the spice. Gayle stayed with her usual glass of Chardonnay. As the San Pedro Market is largely an ethnic food court model, we had the pleasure of sitting where we wanted to, this time outside. Service was efficient, including the use of the fob to tell us when our order was ready. It was a nice time out including Gayle's Son and his Wife.

Yelp
Stopped by this restaurant for a snack and were thoroughly impressed by the garlic tikka fries. Each component of the dish was fantastic. The fries were crispy and fresh, the onions were slightly cooked so they weren't overpowering, and the amount of garlic perfectly complemented the tikka sauce. I am definitely coming back to try other dishes. If you're a fan of paneer or chicken tikka masala, I highly recommend giving this a try! This place is located in San Pedro Square amongst all the various restaurants.
google avatar

Yelp
This place is in the San Pedro market and the food here is delicious. I got the schezwan chicken fried rice and the chicken momos and it was delicious. The service was good and fast. Would definitely recommend this shop if you are ever in the San Pedro square market.
google avatar

Radha T.

Yelp
I heard about this place from desi FM station , so decided to give it a try . It's located inside San Pedro's square Market in Downtown San Jose . Went there on a Sunday evening for dinner. They were out of paneer moms. Vegan momos were ok , filling tasted more like a kachori than momo taste . Vegetarian chow mein was extremely good and tasty. Just like how you get it in India . Manchuria was just ok , more flavor of tomato sauce. I would go there again for Veg Chow mein and try more momos.
google avatar

Suri P.

Yelp
I specifically ordered vegetarian dishes and found 2 pieces of chicken in my plate. I took it back to the front desk and he just shrugged it off like it's not a big deal and offered to refund the dish. They definitely need better food management.
google avatar

Piyush G.

Yelp
I had a chicken momo and fried rice. The fried rice was super oily and spicy. The momo were tasteless and bland and I felt like I was going to throw up. Seating is a challenge and it feels just like a hole in the wall. Sorry, not coming back here.
google avatar

Prav D.

Yelp
We had ordered the steamed and the fried momos and both were good. Definitely recommend this place. Will go back again
google avatar

Isaac K.

Yelp
Stopped by Urban Momo. I wanted something different this time at San Pedro to enjoy with a beer and this Nepali restaurant looked really good. I got the chicken Manchurian and they had a nice spicy kick to it. The garlic Naan was fresh and hot and paired perfectly with a side of white rice. Would definitely come back for more. San Pedro can get busy so make sure you find a table and enjoy the meal!
google avatar

Tiffany L.

Yelp
There's a bit of a wait for food. While I was waiting, I got extra hungry and ordered another item before I even got my first ha. Vegan momo - came out steaming! With two dipping sauce options. Still had much less flavor than I expected. Just ok and prob wouldn't get again. Aloo gobi - this one was really good!
google avatar

Daisy G.

Yelp
I ordered spicy chicken wings and crazy spicy fries. My order was ready in 5 minutes. I got my food and gave it to my partner while I went to the restroom. He opened it and it was chicken chow mein and momo. He took pics for me... Good thing he waited for me to come back bc it wasn't my order. I brought it back after closing the momo container but left the chow mein opened. They took the chow mein and left the momo in the bag and they gave the order to the correct people. I thought it was gross. I told them the food was touched when I handed it to them but they were so busy I don't think they heard or cared lol. Anyways.. the employee told me the order will be ready in 10 min. She didn't give me a buzzer so I had to wait there. It took way longer than 10 min lol. Also a lot of people were visibly frustrated as the wait was long. They were really busy. After waiting a while, they called my name and kindly offered a sprite. I was craving for wings and fries and def ordered the wrong things here. I would not get them again. They were both below mid. They were both not spicy either lol, just covered in red and chili which upset my stomach. I wish I kept the chow mein and momo loll I def want to give it a second try and come back for their momo and biryani. They looked rly good.

Cynthia H.

Yelp
One of my favorite spots in San Pedro square. Service is always friendly and food is made fresh to order. I absolutely love their butter chicken. Dumplings are fantastic too. Everything I've ordered has been delicious.
google avatar

Quoc H.

Yelp
Takeout order: 5/10 Chicken Tikka Masala $13.50 - The sauce is pretty watered down and was lacking seasoning and creaminess. Chicken was ok. Portion is very small. Overall below average dish that a lot of other Indian places can make way better so I would not recommend.
google avatar

Rohit B.

Yelp
We love these guys! Consistently great food, for years. Excellent service where this hard working crew is actually happy to see you. The new seating outside is wonderful. Our favorite dishes - Paneer Momos Chilli, Chicken Manchurian BkB bowl, Lychee Paneer, Palak Paneer, and their fresh buttery naans! :)
google avatar

Vanessa C.

Yelp
Great spot in San Pedro Square to grab a quick bite. There's a back patio with live music on the weekend with heaters and a ton of seating inside. It's situated in a spot where there's craft beer and a tequila bar across the way so it's a good time. The service was friendly and knowledgeable. I'll be back for the chicken vindaloo
google avatar

Dee V.

Yelp
I saw all the good reviews on yelp so I decided to give this place a shot. Ordered the garlic naan and this is what they gave me. Completely burned. How does a business expect to put out food like this for their customers??
google avatar

Guy K.

Yelp
In A Nutshell: -It's funny to write this review about Urban Momo b/c I lived in SJ for years and this was the 2nd restaurant to open up in this same stall, but I never got around to trying it until a recent visit back home. -I kick myself in the arse now b/c damn their food is really good. -There are only 3 restaurants left (Phonemenal, Market Beer Company and Pizza Bocca Lupo) when San Pedro Market originally opened up back in 2010, but Urban Momo should be added to that group since they are the 2nd longest lasting restaurant there. -I ordered a bunch of things such as their Simosas, Naan & Spicy Tandori Chicken. -Everything was so mouth-watering good, especially the Tandori Spicy Chicken. -For around $20 something bucks you can get a very large portion of delicious finger licking chicken. -It's a great deal, very healthy too. Overall, if you are in the mood for Nepalese/Indian food, this is the place to get some!
google avatar

Matthew B.

Yelp
This is becoming my go-to place in the area for lunch. Everything I've tried (samosas, chili momo, Manchurian chicken) has been great, good variety on the menu, portions are more than fair, price is as expected for the area, and food is consistently ready in about 15 minutes. Quite a decent heat level on those chili momos, so be aware!
google avatar

Dave W.

Yelp
Amari showed me the lay of the land and how to find that dish! Thanks for the recommendation! Chicken Tikka Masala, garlic Naan! Well balanced and just what my taste buds needed! When in San Jose roll through San Pedro Market and your stomach will thank you! Much needed Urban Momo! Keep it up!
google avatar

Emily L.

Yelp
Chicken minis were hella good!! Liked the fried one more but they're the same filling. The orange sauce is spicier than the other so I didn't really use the orange sauce. Located in a food hall with a beer bar with a bunch of beer on tap, pho place, Korean place, mochinut, and urban ritual. Pretty chill spot to go to with friends.
google avatar

Caden L.

Yelp
I ordered the chicken momos to go because I've always wanted to try momos but never had the opportunity to do so. The momos were packed with curry flavor, but it wasn't very salty? It was kind of bland. The sauces that came with were a chili sauce and a curry sauce, both were good but again did not add any salt to the dish. I would try it again, I'd like to see what it's like fresh.
google avatar

Yash T.

Yelp
TLDR: Good food, self service and nice ambience Urban Momo is one of our go to joints for Indian food when in San Pedro. Their Gorkhali Chicken and Paneer Momos are nice and spicy. Very different from the other momo offerings in the Bay area. Their samosas are also really good. Note to remember - They always have a long wait time so if you are looking for something quick then this might not be the place for you.
google avatar

Teri A.

Yelp
Their service was better today. Ordered Fried chicken momos and Chicken chow mein. Both were flavorful and good!
google avatar

Rebecca J.

Yelp
Stopped in from Boise while waiting for my ride to Santa Cruz and could not be happier! The food was authentic and delicious! Cool that they use local ingredients and the owner was really kind and friendly. We got the samosas, salt and pepper cauliflower, chicken momo's & chicken tikka masala. I highly recommend!
google avatar

Rhythm A.

Yelp
I have been a regular at this place, as it's pretty close to my place. I really enjoy the momo offering they have to offer, really good food. The service is top notch, and the ambiance is that of a mall food court which is pretty lit in itself.
google avatar

Yvonne C.

Yelp
So many choices in San Pedro, but Urban Momo is the perfect place for something a little different. They specialize in Himalayan and Nepalese food, but you'll also find influences of Indian food here, too. Chicken Momos. Think dumplings but with more spices. Each piece was super juicy and piping hot. They're so addicting and easy to devour! Chicken Tikka Masala Curry. A good helping of flavorful curry sauce and rice. I wish there were a few more pieces of chicken, but for a quick meal, it did the trick. Maybe I'm just a spice wimp, but the additional sauces that our order came with were sPiCy. I loved tasting them for the extra layers of flavor, but my body was not happy with me afterward.
google avatar

Krystal T.

Yelp
got the food delivered so i warmed it up a tiny bit. everything is 420 certified. we over ordered for two people but it's also okay because we ordered extra sauces. make sure you get the chutney sauce here!!! so so refreshing and add such a great flavor profile to the momo. perfect ratio of filling and wrapper. will definitely always recommend!!
google avatar

Yelp
During our first visit to SJ, we def wanted to come to San Pedro Square Market because we love these food hall concepts. Checked out the official website and came across Urban Momo. Photos of their dumplings looks delicious so we had our heart set on coming here. Arrived on Friday around 1130a. Had trouble finding Urban Momo only to realize we were in the other building. Finally found the food stand and placed our order around 12 noon. It wasn't until 30 minutes later, our number was called and food was ready. WOW! And they weren't even busy! Not sure if people working close by were placing phone orders in but the long wait was disappointing. Plus the cashier did not inform us about the possible long wait. If we knew that, we would've walked around and checked out other food stands. Their original Momo dumplings were delicious. You can get them steamed or fried. The dipping sauces were great....a bit of a kick to it for those who like a little bit of spice. The garlic tikka fries were fine. Only saving grace was the tikka sauce. If it wasn't for that, it just tasted like regular fries. They could've add more garlic to this. So long story short: food is delicious...just expect to waste half your lunch hour waiting on your food.

Yelp
Garage building parking available - free for 90mins Urban Momo is inside one of the malls of San Pedro Square, across from Urban Ritual shop hehe I ordered to-go: Chicken Momos (8pcs and Steamed) - flavorful, and good amount of protein to dumpling skin ratio, probably a go-to for bb and me, I also enjoyed the sauce that came along with it..only thing I wished, asetheically is the Momos were shaped like dumplings heh Chicken Tikka Masala - I'm not super adventurous with trying new foods ans know Tikka Masala is a go-to for many people so I decided to try it tonight... we enjoyed it! Not spicy and very unique taste that's also buttery. Definitely a go-to item also for next time. Price is a tad higher $12 to $15 for my items above but given the area of San Pedro Square and also COVID-19 it's average Would visit again if I'm at San Pedro Square/ordering Urban Ritual hehe
