Could Urban Skillet, a Halal Burger Mini-Chain, Become the Next Five Guys? | Eater Twin Cities

"About a year after the Uptown opening, a second Urban Skillet opened in the Cedar Riverside neighborhood—the heart of the city’s Somali community—and Mohammed says that location has been “super popular” so far, continuing to offer the same burger-focused menu (12 burger varieties) along with loaded fries/tots, wings, wraps, and milkshakes while serving as a neighborhood gathering spot." - Justine Jones

I was really looking forward to trying this burger spot out for the first time today. After experiencing it I have come to regret giving it a try in first place. Here are my reasons why: 1. No transparency with what is included when you get a burger. They have sign taped at the front that says that you get small fries and can of soda as complimentary for guest. I wasn't aware of this at that moment until I saw someone check his order and tell the cook that they forgot to give him fries. So if you don't personally ask for what is supposed to come complimentary to any burger and wrap like the sign says they don't address it. Until you get your meal and say I never got my complimentary fries or drinks. Then you get this feeling that they are hoping that you don't catch it and play it off like it was just nothing. Terrible business practice. 2.The original skillet burger has went up from $12.50 to $15.50, but if you get pick up through DoorDash or grubhub it is the $12.50. I wonder if they will purposely not include fries and canned drink like their sign says, just to see if they can get away with it for those that are doing pick-ups. 3. The burger wasn't fully cooked and the middle had some tough chunks to bite through. I forced myself to finish it after spending $24 on burger and sweat potatoes fries it only made sense. Conclusion: I will NEVER come here again or recommend this to anyone I know. I hope they turn things around and do better job if not for customers sake for their own business sake.

New Urban Skillet as the other on Hennepin has closed. Same menu with new items!! Although they can improve the website experience, but looks like it’s going through some improvements. Can’t order directly from the store website like before, so it’s now through Uber Eats

Had an amazing experience at Urban Skillet this weekend! It's impressive to find a spot committed to 100% halal food, and their offerings like the truffle banger burger and loaded tater tots were absolutely delicious. While I'm not a student, I really appreciate their effort to make food affordable with a 15% student discount, which is almost like an employee discount! It’s a smart way to attract students, especially being so close to campus. The friendliness of the staff and their late hours until 11pm are just the cherry on top. Can't wait to go back!

Well its been a little over 18 months I've been grabbing food here off and on. Sometimes your food comes with fries, other times it doesnt. The prices haven't seemed to change since I was going there either. Anyways went to stop in and see if a burger came with fries today and they did not so I chose to leave. Someone claiming to be the owner came out, told me he was the reason there's any confusion and that I could come back inside and my order would come with fries this time. I explained how I've been stopping in and sometimes the $15 burger comes with fries and sometimes does not and asked if they're just going to stop messing with customers which the man didnt answer. So as I turned to get in my car and go somewhere that fries come with the meal and without the games, the man claiming to be the owner said "you can not come back". I understand shady practices and dont really care anymore. But if you're going to follow me around and invite me to not come back then the rest of your customers should probably be aware of how you've been conducting business for a good long string of months. Try Oasis Mediterranean grill like 3 blocks away. Better burgers AND comes with fries and a drink for $7 less, they are halal, have a much better non experimental selection, down to earth prices for MUCH MUCH MUCH better food and service.

Best halal fast-food in the neighborhood 👌. We went to this restaurant after we read the reviews and pictures. We are 100% satisfied with their excellent services and mouthwatering 🤤 foods. They have clean interior. I will recommend to try their original skillet, Buffalo wings, cheese loaded fries, and Somalian tea🍵. We also tried their urban double decker and it's just awesome, but it seems too big for one person. This restaurant will be my go-to restaurant 😋 in MN, whenever I crave for the fast food again. We will visit soon, insh-Allah.

The meat is genuinely the best, the halal bacon is crispy, the spicy sauce is perfect without being over whelming. The fries aren't perfect but still get the job done. The Oreo shake is good all be it basically on par with 5 guys. In regards to halal eats it's unbeatable, I would put them above 5 guys in regards to quality and even freshness to some extent. I intend to come back and try the brisket as I trust them to have good quality meats. Very pleased.

Great spot for food by Augsburg and the children's hospital. A little bit pricey, but decent value with the student discount. Food is out pretty quickly and you get pretty big portions. Burgers are good, urban fries are stellar, shakes are hit or miss depending on what you get. Employees are very friendly and accommodating. Not super busy, but frequent door-dashers coming through. Lots of clean seating and a TV playing occasionally interesting stuff.
