The Best Restaurants to Try in Carmel Valley | Eater San Diego

"The One Paseo pizzeria specializes in a thin-crusted New Haven-style oblong pies cooked with coal fire. Even its roving black food truck has its own coal-fired oven. Popular red pies include the [B]URBN BBQ chicken pizza with scallions and peppered salami pie while its white pie highlights include the mashed potato pie and fresh clam pizza, rarely found in this neck of the woods. You can do a half-and-half pizza as long as it features the same sauce." - Helen I. Hwang

I stopped ordering here when a large pizza started costing over $50. I thought I give them a try again in spite of the high price. I ordered a large 2 topping and was shock at the lack of cheese & toppings. See attached photo.

Google
First time at URBN Pizza but it won't be my last. I had the clam pizza and it was excellent! The clams were fresh and the crispy crust was delicious! The service was wonderful. Rachel was a delight. I topped off my pizza with an Express Martini which was awesome. I will definitely be back. Thanks for a great experience.

Google
Awesome place, excellent service, Delicious thin crust pizza. We had the pesto pizza (without chicken) and the eggplant. Both were yummy!

Google
We really enjoyed the pizzas! The small size was extremely generous, and we really enjoyed the Eggplant Parmesan Pizza and Mashed Potatoes Pizza!! The Italian Bean Dip was pretty good; it tasted pretty much like hummus. There was a lot of dip and definitely not enough bread. Our server was not very attentive, and we were had to wait many minutes before the server came to receive our orders or give the check.

Google
The best pizza in San Diego… quality ingredients and nice staff.

Google
Urbn Pizza is considered a New Haven-Style Pizza, for those of you who do not what that is here's a quick explanation; At the turn of the twentieth century; New Haven became a popular settlement for Italian Families during the country’s diaspora. The southern Italian families missed their Neapolitan style pizza of their homeland. The New Haven-style pizza is hotter, crispier and a dirtier descendant of Neapolitan style pie. These thin-crusted oblong pies are cooked in a coal oven and charred just right With that being said, I came with family. We decided to bar hop but needed something to start with. We were a 5 top and arrived around 5pm. My little cousin was a bit hungry and we needed something fast. She opted for the wings.. First off, let me just say I would never let the wings leave the kitchen burnt as it was. Did my family care? Nope, they were hungry. But I was so disappointed; I didn’t want to make it a big deal and send it back, we only ordered drinks and 1 entrée but, really… check out the pics, what do you think? I will have to come back, give them a try and change this review. The drinks were delicious and the customer service was great but something about serving burnt wings.

Google
Just want to echo how delicious the pizza is. I had a red sauce small pie with sausage and red onion yesterday. Perfect amount of toppings and the crust was crisp but not dry or tough. Can't wait to try some of the other toppings which sound wonderful, especially the eggplant. Socially-distanced Indoor dining is available now. They only have a couple tables outside. Wait person was super friendly and helpful. Expensive place but worth a splurge. Free parking is very easy and convenient in the adjacent multi-level garage buildings. The entire One Paseo complex is a pretty refuge from the hustle and bustle of a busy day.

Yelp
Love the food and service here. Usually accommodates a large party and has a good amount of seating.

Yelp
The food here is good but the service is honestly unacceptable. I came in to order the same exact pizza I ordered last week from this location at One Paseo. It was a Large pizza, half mashed potatoes and half Margherita. I asked for the same order and two separate servers rudely told me that it cannot be done because it needs to be either red or white. I then told them that I ordered this same exact pizza last week and they kept saying how that wasn't true. I then even pulled out the actual receipt because I was told that I was imagining it and that they have never done it. Finally after making it such a big deal they decided to do it. I am shocked by how rude these two separate servers were. Management feel free to reach out, because you should follow up about this. Attaching receipt I showed them from the week before where I got what they said they have never done... Cherry on top to add. My friend is allergic to gluten and is celiac. She called asking is there is any cross contamination. The staff responded that her best chance it to take a raw pizza and bake it at home.

Yelp
Thinking of getting pizza here? Forget it. Look at all the 1 star reviews. That's not normal. These guys are legitimately bad. Bad pizza, bad customer service. I had pizza from here yesterday and one time 3 years ago. It hasn't changed. It still sucks. Expect a burnt crust, overly sweet tomato sauce, hardly any cheese, and a thin floppy undercarriage. At least these guys are consistent.... Consistent at making terrible pizza. Dave Portnoy would give this place a 2 out of 10.

Yelp
Hot Honey (red pie with mozzarella, hot honey, pepperoni, and jalapeño) is where it's at if you like sweet with your heat! Pies are thin crust and coal-fired as - let's be honest - all pizza should be, and oversized for good measure. My one complaint is that the crust is almost *too* thin - risking sogginess if you don't devour your pie immediately. Eat up and don't bother taking home leftovers!

Yelp
The gluten free pizza was great! The servers were nice too! We went on a busy Friday night and the service was slow due to them being busy. The other issue is we ordered 1 gluten free pizza, and one regular, but they made both with the gluten free crust. We ate it anyways but they did offer to re-make it, which is nice. We were hungry so couldn't wait for that. Wings were a little dry maybe due to the coal fired oven. I did like they used huge pieces of bacon and salami on our "build your own" bacon and salami pizza. My hubby ordered the gluten free Pepperoni + Pepperocini pizza but it had hardly any cheese. Overall a nice place with solid pizza, a good but small menu. We would come back!

Yelp
My wife and I went to Harland to have some beers and found out that we could order pizza from URBN next door. This was very convenient and we ended up ordering a small Gouda Chicken Alfredo.this was a perfect size for two people and the pizza was not too heavy. I enjoyed the ingredients that this pizza had and the crust was my favorite part of this pizza. I don't know how the service and ambience was because we did not dine in at URBN, but I'll try the food there next time I in the area. Overall, it was a delicious pizza.

Yelp
Went for lunch on a Friday with some coworkers. The seating area inside is not large, but is an inviting area. There is also outside seating. We were quickly seated by a hostess and our server came by with a jug of water and glasses and handed us menu's. Everything looked tasty and my table of 3 decided on a small sausage and peppers pizza. The pie came out about 7 minutes later on an oblong pizza tray and it was fantastic! Thin, chewy, flavorful crust - not too much sauce, great sausage and cheese and fresh cut peppers, plus just a hint of Gorgonzola cheese. An outstanding pizza pie IMO. The bill was not bad for lunch for three of us - a little over $30 with tip. I'll definitely be back to this spot the next time I am in San Diego!

Yelp
I like Urbn a lot but usually do takeout. Hung out with some friends here in the courtyard for the first time. Courtyard is nice and lots of bench seating. I wish there were more heaters, so take a jacket. Cocktail menu looked great, but my whiskey smash was just ok. Not bad, but I wouldn't order it again. Nice selection of pizzas. I always like their classic cheese - it's tasty and has a great char. We also did eggplant parm; mashed potato without the meat; and honey jalapeno which was fun to try. The caesar salad was good, and the bean dip and the mediterranean type chopped salad were decent. The pizza is the thing here - and I'll keep ordering the cheese because it's yummy!

Yelp
Absolutely lovely lunch on the outdoor patio! We shared brussel sprouts, salad and pizza and then strolled, had dessert, and came back. Yep, we ordered the mashed potato pizza to go for dinner. It was all so very good! The New Haven style pizza is really light/thin and we all ate our crusts. Looking forward to coming back and trying more combinations.
google avatar

Melissa D.

Yelp
Love this place! Excellent service, kid friendly, and lots of tables indoors and outdoors especially for big parties. Started with wings and brussel sprouts but the crispy brussel sprouts were not so crispy like my other visits. It was more on the soggy side. The pizza is always consistent here. I just wish you could do a half white sauce and half red, which you cannot do. Happy hour 3pm to 6pm Mon- Fri but only on beer/ wine.

John P.

Yelp
Best way to describe the pizza is "slop". Wet crust with 100% flop. The crust was just OK. Dennis, our waiter, said he was from NYC and in the pizza business. Don't know how he could work there when he has to know what the real deal is. He was an excellent waiter even though it took him ages to come back with the bill. He recommended an excellent beer choice as well. Very nice outside seating on a beautiful San Diego evening. Gave it 3 stars because we were there with family. They bumped it up a star.

Yelp
Finally came inside! I've been ordering for pickup since they opened (mostly during lockdown), so i've never set foot inside. they have bar seating (yay), indoor tables and outdoor tables. my friend was here and i joined her. i had a couple drinks during my visit. ..first a spicy margarita then a paloma. The margarita was much better than paloma...Thanks Kai for being a fabulous bartender!! i enjoyed pizza compliments of my elbow mates... the pepperoni was delish! wish it was double pepperoni... the eggplant parmigian was also quite tasty, but i'm a pepperoni kinda gal. I wouldn't mind coming back soon.

Yelp
Bad service, very long waiting time, I think that if you come to a catering establishment, you should be met by a hostess who is not at his workplace, I also want to note that the order should not be prepared when it is already in the check list, when the order came I was on my way to the restaurant, but when I arrived 10 minutes later, I had to wait another 20 to eat, the director of the restaurant should control each employee and manage them, if the director is sewing up, then you need to hire more employees or introduce a regulation that the employee, And that's with not full boarding on a Saturday, a day when the kitchen and managers should be ready for the workload

Kyndall H.

Yelp
Helped us out with a fast order for a large group when we were on a pinch! Thanks so much to the whole crew for your help and rushed services.
google avatar

Siu M.

Yelp
Price increase, quality decrease The pizza used to be crispier, more "coal fired". This time it was kind of soggy. This is the third time we came here with a large group (15+ people) because they didn't charge extra for large groups. This time, they began charging us 5% fee, which we were not given notice of ahead of time. (We ordered 5 large pizzas, 3 large salads, and a whole bunch of drinks). Prices of pizza also went up quite a bit as someone else mentioned. Possible change in management? Waiters were great and super attentive though! The three stars go to them. Looks like our bi-annual celebrations will have to move elsewhere. Any recs?

Yelp
This place serves okay pizza. The pizza are extremely huge, like as big as a small dining table. The pizza itself was okay. The crust could be crustier, and the pizzas we got could use more flavor. Because of the large size of the pizza, I would say the price of the food is reasonable. The service of the place was great. Our waitress was very friendly and answered all our questions. This place is a very casual restaurant with booths and high tops and TVs. Overall, I had an okay experience here.
google avatar

Tammie W.

Yelp
I'm surprised by the negative reviews because I found Urbn to be a good lunch spot in One Paseo. Our server was super friendly, chatted it up with everyone on the patio and was attentive. The hubby and I ordered a small build your own with pepperoni, mushrooms, olives and onions. It was the perfect size and had 8-10 square slices. Let's talk about that crust. It's soft, pillowy but has that perfect chew to it. The pizza itself held up really well to the toppings we added which I'm always afraid of with vegetables. We went around 2pm, so the restaurant wasn't that busy but the patio had 5 tables occupied with everyone trying to soak up the warm sun. The inside looked large and inviting with the soft light and music playing. I liked Urbn because it's straightforward, has a decent sized menu and it's a solid choice for a meal.

Yelp
We live at Arlo in PQ and had our Pool Grand Opening with URBN Catering and let me tell you, I already love URBN, but now having met Mike "Mikey", we are bringing our relatives, guests, and clients to the restaurants. I also told Mikey I want him to be the lead when I hire URBN for Open Houses. URBN execs, if you read this, please elevate Mike's position, if he likes, because he is a great leader and knows how to work with your guests and staff. He is a model leader!

Yelp
Service is just horrible. And I expect more from an "East Coast" pizza shop. Went with my husband, two year old, and 9 month old on Saturday. With kids, you have a small window of calm before eating out just isn't enjoyable. We sat down and for 15 minutes no server even came and brought us water let alone take our order so we could be in and out. My kids were getting restless, so I got up and said we're going. I told the waitress she was taking too long and we're leaving and she just said "okay." What a joke. No "I'm sorry, let me take your order now and we can get the food out to you in less than x minutes." This would never happen at a pizza place in the tristate area. Will never support this business again.
google avatar

Wendy E.

Yelp
The location is great, and the service is very friendly and attentive. They are dog friendly! That is why I gave any stars. I got a gluten free margarita pizza. It is a woodfired crust. It came out with many burnt spots on the top, which I guess I understand since it's woodfired. But the bottom crust was soggy, and the sauce tasted like a can of crushed tomatoes. The pizza was cold, and the mozzarella cheese was chewy. The basil was burnt. It's some of the worst pizza I have had, and it cost me $30 for a small pie. My friend got a regular crust and it also was soggy on the bottom, even with the gluten. Her pizza had more burnt patches than mine.

Yelp
Paid by card. Urbn One is located on the road towards a shopping plaza. I ordered for pickup and didn't have issues ordering, but I had a really hard time finding quick parking nearby. I ordered a pizza with bacon, brussels sprouts, and the Urbn salad. It was pretty pricy but the pizza and brussels sprouts portions were big. I was really disappointed with the pizza and brussels sprouts though because it was SO SALTY! They were almost impossible to eat because of all the salt. The salad was good but I wish it was bigger. Overall I don't think I'd go back here again because I thought it was expensive for what it was and the food was too salty.
google avatar

Jason Y.

Yelp
...perfectly fired and just burnt enough crust. sausage and peppers, white clam, and coal fired wings, extra crispy
google avatar

Paul H.

Yelp
I like their pizza - the crust is nice and the toppings taste very fresh. However, this month they raised their already high prices to stratospheric levels. I just can't justify paying this much: Was $28ish plus tax for the pizza pictured here. In one go, they raised it $11 to $39 + tax! A 40% increase! This is for their smaller size pizza about 14". It would not feed 2 hungry adults. I eat a whole one myself. And I'm not ordering fancy toppings. Just ordinary pizza toppings like pepperoni, mushroom, olive and garlic. If these exorbitant price increases are due to their escalating costs, then management seriously needs to review their cost structure, suppliers, rent, etc.

Yelp
Pizza tastes burnt. Returned it and replacement tastes better, but still burnt. Burnt taste lingers on the top of my tongue. Wings were overcooked and tough. Service from Rachel at the bar was excellent

Yelp
I Ordered the salami, pepperoni, and peppercjini pizza . The pizza was not hot and the crust spots burnt and the fresh mozzarella was not soft/melted at all and actually hard .and it cost me $35. Very pleasant waitress.
google avatar

M. B.

Yelp
I've been to most if not all urbn locations, including a recent visit to this one during which I guess I was hopeful but actually delusional that maybe my other experiences were a fluke. But like the others, the focus on food quality is just not there. Large portions of the crust was burnt beyond recognition, inedible. Not exactly New Haven style. Portion size was a joke as the large pizza filled up about half of the box. Pricing has gone way up as well. Objectively, there are many pizza places around that do a much better job. Sad to see this one fall so far from their once amazing grace.
google avatar

Yelp
Located in a fun small shopping center, with some outdoor and indoor seating. The pizza here is tasty and consistently good, but the staff seems like they are in another world. It seems to take a long time to be noticed and once seated waitresses will pass by several times without saying anything. It's almost like they don't want anyone sitting. If I go back, I will order the pizza online to go and take it next door to Harland for better customer service and fresh beer. The food was 4 stars, but service was unsatisfactory.
google avatar

Cal L.

Yelp
PSA - if you're ordering takeout, don't walk into the restaurant. Don't pass go, don't collect $200. Go straight to the back of the store with the boxes and piles of flour and raw dough and wait for your pizza in the back. It had a stockroom / warehouse feel to it, and it was close to the kitchen / action. Pretty cool. Also. The large pizzas are large. I know, obvious, but we ended up with too much food. We got the Gouda pizza, the margarita, both large, and two small clam pizzas. Everything was DELICIOUS. The crust was thin and solid. The toppings were generous, and even though the experience wasn't perfect - they don't sell the clam pizza in large (annoying) and on one bite of my clam pizza I bit into a hard clam shell (ouch) the pizzas, in particular the clam, were so good - I just got two of the smalls. And my teeth are intact. So all good. But guys if you're reading this, please make sure you guys don't serve clam shells to people in the future. I would've been really sad if I had to go to the dentist because of negligence. Thanks for the yummy pizza and friendly service. I will be back and bite carefully next time.

Yelp
Ate here last night on a "try it one more time" basis. We ordered a pizza and expressly told the waitress not to burn the pizza. But it came out burned black all around the outer edge. This is a carcinogen. And to make matters worse, the waitress said she was leaving early so asked us to pay while we were eating, which is frankly is a disturbance. We never had problems like this at URBN Encinitas. The URBN at One Paseo is an utter disappointment. Save your money and go to Enoteca.
google avatar

Shaina W.

Yelp
Not good, whoever was the cook last night burnt the pizza and brussel sprouts. Judging from tons of reviews saying the same thing, I wouldn't recommend this location and want my money back.
google avatar

Monica K.

Yelp
went to dinner with a friend after work and parking at one paseo is so easy. Waitress was attentive and friendly. Wings were terrific and pizza tasted great. Only downside was there were way more peppers than sausage on the sausage and pepper pizza and there was so much cheese than it pooled in the center.
google avatar

Seetha G.

Yelp
Love Urbn pizzas and was thrilled to have a location close to home. Our family fav is the eggplant parm. The portion sizes are generous. We have not yet stopped by for dine in but have had only positive experiences for carry out.
google avatar

Adam M.

Yelp
Great casual pizza spot. Ate at the bar and had amazing service from the bartender Adam. My cup stayed full, my order came out quick, and the food was great. Awesome spot to catch the game. Would definitely come back

J D.

Yelp
I hadn't been to Urbn for a while, and was frustrated to see that since my last visit, the prices are definitely higher, but unfortunately quality is way down. The cherry peppers on my pizza were FULL of seeds. Seems like lazy prep work. No one wants to bite down on a clump of hard pepper seeds when they're eating. 30 bucks for a pizza, and I have to spend time scraping seeds out when I get home? Pizza was also both greasy and soggy. Disappointing.
google avatar

Dannie G.

Yelp
Taste wise the pizza was good. However, all of the cheese, sauce and toppings slid off each piece. Seemed as if the dough was under cooked as well.
google avatar

Samantha M.

Yelp
I really want to like this place because the flavors of pizza sound great. Unfortunately I am always a little disappointed. The pizza is really greasy and hard to eat because it is pretty soggy.
google avatar

John H.

Yelp
The pizza looks aesthetically pleasing, but taste and toppings wise falls flat. There was not a lot of chicken on the pizza, sauce was light at best, and cheese seemed non existent. There were a decent amount of scallions and bacon, but for $30 expected a lot more. We've eaten at the El Cajon location and they loaded the toppings and that's why we tried this one. $20-$25 ok, but pushing $35 just felt very chintzy.
google avatar

Alexa S.

Yelp
We really enjoyed our lunch here! The large pizzas are HUGE! We definitely took some home. Our pizza was fresh and crisp. I definitely recommend eating here!

Dave F.

Yelp
Wow. We had a great experience at Urbn. We brought a large group in on a Saturday night and they were extremely accommodating. The food was fabulous. The coal fired wings were outstanding and the pizza was delicious. We tried several different pies and they were all outstanding. Our server was a total rockstar who handled a large group (including parents and kids split across different tables) like an absolute pro. We will be back.

Ree R.

Yelp
Used to eat here when they first opened as a regular. Then raised prices. Tried after several years and bam. Raised prices to ridiculous level. Add to that how often the pizza is black (burned) even when you know it'll be black, ask them to take out early so it isn't black, it still often comes out burnt. Staff often seems like your bothering them by ordering to go. So much drama. Time for a new option to go into this place. No way they're gonna survive with these prices. More expensive than my fresh fish place.

Yelp
preface: we order from the sister location of basic pizza downtown all of the time (at least 20 times in last year) and would give 5/5 stars every single time (see separate review), which is why our experience at Urbn one Paseo is so disappointing... we've placed a pickup order using the slice app for this location three times and we're now officially giving up. all three times one of the the pizzas has been completely black. like not even close to edible. how can they even box this? it's not cheap and it's super disappointing to get home to serve it and find the crust crumbled and resembling charcoal. I get that New Haven style pizza is thin and can be crispy on the edges (the sister restaurant of Basic masters this perfectly). check out my pictures, the crust is literally a black pile of soot. the slice app promptly refunded me for the one pizza but now the kids have nothing to eat and I don't feel like driving back for a redo...which leads me to why we won't try again... every time we've had a bad experience customer service at the actual restaurant acts like we're bothering them and couldnt care less. (eg, our order got "lost" the first time we tried this place and we waited 2 hours for pizza tried again and got a burned pizza and tried a third time and got what you see in the pictures) . the fact that someone would box up the pile of charcoal we received is just wrong on so many levels. hey owners of this location, step up your game, the teenage boys on the phone serving burned pizzas didn't cut it today. we were literally the only order at 3:30 pm on Easter and this group was a hot mess. three strikes and we're done. with so many good options in the one Paseo / sky deck area, we will give up on this one. peace out.

Yelp
I popped in after lunch crowd was gone and had the whole place to myself. Quick friendly service. Served me a carafe of water with a glass that had someone's lipstick still on it. Yuk. I ordered the small URBN salad and added chicken. It was large enough for two people to share. Very nice vinaigrette, it needed a little bit more dressing for my taste. Yummy walnut brittle and pears were ripe. The chicken was a little bit dry but I ate it. For the $18 plus I left a tip I think I will try the pizza next time. Very friendly staff. A++++ on the service.
google avatar

Jenna S.

Yelp
We ordered a pizza from Urbn from Harland Brewery as they are able to deliver there, so we didn't get any real interaction with their workers. Saying that, my review is based solely on the food. We got the large mashed potato pizza and Brussel sprouts. The Brussel sprouts were fairly good and had a good taste, but a little too crunchy for our liking. The large pizza was SO big! We wish we would have known how big it was ahead of time, and would have just ordered the smaller size. The pizza wasn't good at all. It was so dry and had no taste to it. For $30, it didn't seem worth the value whatsoever. We would not get this pizza again.
google avatar

Natalia M.

Yelp
this review is solely based on ordering urbn pizza through Harland at One Paseo - we ordered 5 pizzas, Brussels sprouts, Caesar salad, and wings. The Brussels sprouts were absolutely delicious. I didn't get to try the Caesar salad but it was finished so it must of been good. The wings were perfectly cooked, I'd go back for them! We got them with no sauce on them and it had a dry rub vibe. We got a margarita, sausage and peppers, clam pizza, pesto and chicken pizza, & a mashed potato pizza. All were served hot and were delicious! the mashed potato pizza blew my mind! Simple and delicious. We finished every single piece! Worth the money to me.
google avatar

Steve N.

Yelp
I'll start by the staff looked dirty and had no uniforms other than dirty shoes and T-shirts. They could not keep up with the guests and let the salads lie dead when they had backups. They were the worst catering operation I've seen and highly suggest you do NOT use them for a nice event or any wedding. This company phoned this in and deserve 1 star.

Yelp
I'm a big fan of wood fired pizza but the pizza's here were just too eclectic for me. The thin crust could not hold up the toppings which created a bit of a floppy mess. I would have added another star if the crust was better.

Yelp
This was our date night. We arrived and they offered us a table in the middle of the outdoor patio but we didn't prefer being in the center of the dining room. The hostess was pretty nice about it and we pointed out a table next the wall on the patio which had an outdoor heater next to it. It was nice we only waited a couple of min for the table to get cleaned and we were seated. We opted to choose "Create Your Own" pizzas as the menu did not have a "meat lovers" version. It was great to order what we liked for each. We ordered 1 white alfredo sauced, pepperoni, sausage and green bell pepper pizza and 1 res sauced 6-topping (meatball, salami, bacon, olives, onions, and spinach) pizza. Sadly, the white sauced pizza came out with red sauce but we did not send it back (we rarely do that). Both pizzas were very delicious. I also ordered the Harland Japanese Beer (on tap). The beer was somewhat cold but still pretty tasty. Overall, we enjoyed this visit but the "Create Your Own" Pizza was pricey. Pizza #1 was $27 and Pizza $37, because each extra topping is $3 and it adds up. We will probably stick to another place for a "meat lovers" pizza and only order their menu pizzas in the future. Our server was great and, although busy, she was attentive to our drink refills.

Yelp
Great place to hangout with friends and family as well as your furry companions. The restaurant has a decent selection of beers and wines but the food selection is limited on their menu. For the food they only serve pizzas/pie with a variety of toppings. We took their garlic, chicken toppings. The pizza is baked in a wood fire oven and has the smoky flavourful. Thin crust is nice and crunchy. Portions are generous. For the appetizers we took chicken wings which were just okay. Overall nice ambience and had a great time with our family.

Yelp
Had to leave One Paseo today because the toxic smell emanating from this restaurant was so bad.
