9 Affordable Private Island Resorts Around the World

"Nestled in a lush area of the Bocas del Toro archipelago on the northern coast of Panama, Urraca offers a unique private island experience. The resort is actually built on stilts over the crystal clear water of the Caribbean, allowing guests to enjoy the abundant marine life below their feet. The bioluminescent waters around the small mangrove island glow at night, creating once-in-a-lifetime ambiance. The intimate, eco-friendly resort comprises six overwater bungalows with private balconies and outdoor showers. My son and I visited Monkey Island in April, 2025. This is an absolute must see if in the area. It was raining that day, so the monkey's weren't overly active as we were told they don't like the rain. Beautiful work Francine is doing for the monkeys. It was a great experience being able to feed the monkey's, pet them, hang out and learn more about them.

This is by far one of our favorite places we’ve ever stayed. The peace and quiet we experienced at Francine’s is unike anything we’ve ever felt before. It is true living. Francine has built something truly incredible at Urreca. The food was the best we had in Panama, the staff were so kind, and living with the monkeys for a few days was unbeatable. We hope to come back one day.

What a magical place. Francine’s love for animals is infectious. The entire staff on the island are so welcoming and their attention to detail is amazing. Food was incredible. We were there with a group ages 23-76 and everyone enjoyed! Plan to return.

This was an excellent experience. You really get an up close view and great pictures with the monkeys. Some can climb on you if you want them to. Monkeys are well trained and they listen which made me comfortable. Francine and Mikayla were great in explaining things giving some history, and aiding in taking fantastic picture. It was truly an excellent experience. I would recommend this.

An incredibly unique and hidden experience unlike any other. While we didn't stay in the rooms, we were invited to explore the tiny island and to meet the wonderful people who have been running this sanctuary. Francine, the owner, sat and spoke with us for hours, showing her undeniable passion for not only providing care for all of her rescued monkeys, but for also providing never ending smiles on her guests' faces. She has reoccurring volunteer help from wonderful individuals as well as supports and interacts with the local tribe, the Ngäbe, frequently bringing them over to meet guests and make exchanges for little trinkets, or in our case, a boatload of the freshest seafood imaginable. The monkeys themselves are wonderful, with three of them being very social yet calm, and the rest separated by a bridge connecting the island the resort is on and an island just for the monkeys, completely restricted to all people. I had high hopes for Urraca, and all expectations were surpassed thanks to some of the most welcoming people I have ever met. Thank you for inviting us over for the day, and I hope to be back soon!

this was the most amazing location i have ever stayed! 12 of us stayed for 3 nights & the food, the environment, francine (the owner), the staff and the monkeys were second to none. though the rooms were rustic & open air,. they were incredibly clean with quality linen. Francine was a fantastic host & was amazingly kind, funny & accommodating! i couldn’t even begin to put into words the wonderful experience we had. Thank you to Urraca Island for the most amazing experience ever, we will be back!❤️
