"Uwajimaya is a Japanese-American-owned Asian grocery store in Beaverton with a selection that’s comparable to a mid-sized supermarket in Tokyo. Its shelves are loaded with hard-to-find condiments, Japanese cuts of fish, and a huge selection of noodles and snacks. The deli sells prepared food like tempura, soba, unadon (grilled eel on rice), chirashi sushi, nigiri, and sashimi. And Uwajimaya even houses a complete Kinokinuya bookstore (a popular Japanese bookstore chain), a ramen shop, and a great selection of Asian face masks, Japanese hotpot equipment, and yukatas (a traditional Japanese garment similar to a kimono)." - Jade Yamazaki Stewart

I love this store. They have a lot of Asian stuffs in there. Crews are really helpful, kind and friendly people. I like Bentos, spam musubi, katsu combos and noodles.

Google
This has to be my favorite grocery store in the metro area. Even though the parking lot was PACKED today, I was quickly able to find a parking spot and drivers were courteous and aware. Inside, they have such a massive inventory ranging from fresh veggies, to endless options of ramen packages, to pristinely sliced meats, home goods, extensive sake selection, and more! Very reasonably priced and there is a multitude of options for each item you may be looking for. They also have in tank full fresh crabs and a HUGE selection of ready and hot food. You could go here everyday for a week and still not discover all of the treasures within. People seem to also be very aware and are courteous in the aisles. The staff are also very helpful and friendly too.

This place offers a wide range of Japanese products, from fresh produce and sushi-grade seafood to pantry staples and specialty items. The store is very clean and has well-maintained sections. The snack aisle is particularly my favorite, featuring great sweet snacks. Prices are reasonable given the quality, making it a great destination for anyone interested in Japanese products. It‘s also connected to a really cool bookstore full of Japanese anime, books, toys, and stationery items. A must-visit market if you are a fan of Japanese culture!

Uwajimaya is a fantastic destination for anyone interested in Asian cuisine and culture. The store offers a wide range of fresh produce, unique snacks, and specialty items that are hard to find elsewhere. I was amazed by the variety of products available, from traditional Japanese foods to other Asian delicacies. The attached food court is also a highlight, offering delicious and authentic meals. It's a great spot for both shopping and dining. ✨

Google
Grocery shopping here is always enjoyable, with plenty to see and a wide range of options.

Google
We love to shop here! We always plan to pickup some delicious poke for lunch during our visit. We love to visit with the person who makes the poke. Always friendly and helpful. All the folks who work here are helpful and seem genuinely glad to see you, plus it's such a fun store to explore! Every aisle has something interesting.

Google
One wish is to have a microwave to heat ready to eat Benito meals and sitting area / cafe to eat. Also they need to increase gyudon beef bowls availability . Always out :( soooo good.

Google
Classic icon of the community for two and a half decades. Visiting after a long time away and only visiting the locations in Seattle/Bellevue made me realize I completely forgot how much smaller and older this location is. It can be really crowded on a weekend and the parking lot was small, but they still have everything you could need and more!

Cathy S.

Yelp
This market is full of all your Japanese cooking needs and more! Snack, noodles, sauces, they have it all! When we went they were putting the Gashapon (coin toy dispenser) machines so exciting! Their deli section is where it's at though - definitely don't sleep on that! I got a Mini Bowl for $7.99 you choose between white or brown rice (which comes hot), furikake seasoning, seaweed salad, pickled ginger and your choice of poke from the deli case. They had a wide variety of tuna and salmon poke choices and my dude did not skimp on it even for a mini bowl! It filled me up for sure. They also have a hot case of musubis and specialty baked goods galore. If you're close by and looking for lunch options, come browse the deli section for fresh poke and also other prepared food and I assure you won't be disappointed!

Yelp
This store really is incredible and I simply must start doing more shopping here even just for some of the prepared meals. They are so fresh and their produce is incredible. The people are so nice and want to help which is refreshing. It is truly shocking how night and day the experience here is after going to other grocery stores. Also, if you are a person who enjoys seafood for a primary part of your diet, like me, then this REALLY is a great option for you since their fish is abundant an very fresh with a lot of different options, including frozen. Getting in and out of the store is great too - especially with the lesser used back entrance if you live more local like I do.

Yelp
Awesome little Japanese market. Fresh, live seafood is what we came for and come back for. Fantastic ramen spot next door too. Parking can be more hectic than a Whole Foods parking lot in Santa Monica, though.

Breanna C.

Yelp
I loooove Uwajimaya. It can be quite intimidating at first if you are not familiar with a lot of the products but staff are always nice and helpful. Whether with recommendations and/or finding some random ingredient for a recipe you are trying. They also have such yummy snacks throughout.

Elijah M.

Yelp
I grabbed some snacks and they tasted really good! And also the packaging is adorable as well! Sometimes the staff can be a bit awkward when being randomly asked were stuff are and I find that completely understandable. When I looked in the chopsticks area they had a bunch of cat themed items that were so cute!!!! And they barely have the California rolls when I go :( But I would overall say come here if you're trying something new and if you want to experiment with different delicious delicacy's! And also the sake was very good

Jboogie L.

Yelp
It is a bit dated inside. However upon looking at the deli, the poke bowls are pretty decently priced --$11.99 (2 scoops of poke) and $7.99/mini poke bowl.

Bodie P.

Yelp
I was looking for some incense for me the nag champa and I found sum named shin which reminded me of d shin 33. I appreciate all the werk irs alot.

Yelp
Uwajimaya is a fantastic spot for Asian groceries! They have a huge selection of fresh produce, seafood, and hard-to-find snacks. The staff is always helpful, and despite being busy, checkout is fast. The store is clean, well-organized, and fun to browse. Highly recommend for all your Asian grocery needs!

Kailani S.

Yelp
Food always great. Employees are very helpful. Lots of things to choose from in the store. We always go for a few things and leave with bags full spending more than we wanted. Lol. If you like kimchi, this is the best! They need to put an uwajimaya downtown Portland and Vancouver Washington.

Michelle V.

Yelp
This review is just for the poke bowls they sell! I got a poke plate for literally 12.99. For this much food, are you kidding me?! Such a steal! The workers there are sooo nice and let me try so many things! I'd recommend the bbq salmon and ahi tuna! They not only have the green seaweed salad but also the red one too. Great place for lunch and had been a staple for me! They also have hawaiian marinated poke options as well if you want your not typical flavors :)

Jonathan P.

Yelp
Really great Japanese grocery store. Selection is great, quality is great, and prices are great. What else do you want?

Nathaniel J B.

Yelp
Great Asian market with great food court of yummy deliciousness!! Definitely try the fried pork belly and grab some poke!!! Nice selection of meats produce and seafood!! Nice staff and great facility

John Y.

Yelp
Best store in my life . Can't believe I never knew this place before.if you like Hawaiian food or you're from Hawaii well, this is the place you can get all the local food. Even taro leave, poke bowl, spam musubi.

Elizabeth G.

Yelp
Tired of long lines at grocery stores? Uwajimaya is very spacious, super clean and easy to get in and out of, especially during evenings. They have the freshest seafood, fish and produce of any of the Asian markets in Oregon. Uwajimaya gets fresh shipments from Hawaii. I love the poke here. There's a vast array of different poke, cooked and raw. As you can see from the photos, the produce is super fresh. Meats tend to be Carlton Farms, quite excellent. I'm loving their live seafood tanks and fresh poke. You can find milk eggs and other staples here for a one stop shop. The staff is very polite and knowledgeable. The absolute best Tofu is fresh OTA Tofu! Pair with Carlton Farms pork with your favorite Mapo sauce and you have a meal.

Yuli L.

Yelp
I've been an Uwajimaya customer for almost two decades and I love buying sashimi grade fish there. It's been such a routine for me, that I usually run directly to the fish counter to get the highest grades fish for making sushi before rushing out of the store. To my surprise today, I found out you can buy an array of poke now! They have 8 tubs of fresh poke ranging from ahi tuna to lomi salmon to fresh shrimp. Just when I was dazzled by their wide selection, I also discovered you can get a large poke bento box for 15 bucks. The bento comes with 2 scoops of the poke(s) that you want, rice and a seaweed salad of your choice. My original plan was to make sashimi for dinner, but with that price and selection, I was more than happy to abandon my original plans and opted for the bento! Not sure if it's something new they are trying out, or I simply have not been paying attention. Either way, I'm soooo happy I can get yummy poke at my fav Japanese grocery store now!

Yelp
Sorry for such a late review, but if you are following, I am very behind due to my 6/13/22 SF JapanTown incident, see Yelp. What a great find. I am told this was from a local Japanese supermarket and is now a tourist attraction...? Quality/Quantity - Bought more snacks then we should have from both the deli and grocery departments. They also have Papa Beards in this location. Atmosphere - Asian supermarket, see pictures. Service - Good. Price - Very affordable, good value. Owner Comment - Congrats on your success since 1928! And for being a 3rd generation business with your 4 locations.

John D.

Yelp
They usually have delicious food and usually trust that if I get something from here that it'll be top notch. I made the mistake of getting the sweet chili duck with rice in the deli. Buyer beware it was mostly bones and a lot of rice.

Emma K.

Yelp
This place has everything you need. Miso? Hundreds of options. Rare Kit Kats? Yep. All the sauces in the whole world. If you're look specially for Miso Easy, they do not have that. But to be fair, I doubt that's the most authentic miso paste in the world. The hot bar is lit. Lots of yummy options for a snack -- baos and musubis. I love Uwajimaia. Would recommend coming hungry.

Aiden

Yelp
It gives you the feeling of being in a Japanese supermarket. The prices are very reasonable, and parking is free.

Maria I.

Yelp
The people who work at the checkout area are very rude & abrupt. There is much less selection in the goods they offer- recently I have seen more empty shelves.

Stephanie S.

Yelp
Loads of variety to choose from! Honestly they have everything you could really imagine in an Asian supermarket . Tons of snacks, seafood, meat, pre made food , etc. they even has a good selection of skincare , collectibles, and other gifts. Place felt clean and well taken care of and staff was nice. A little pricey though.

Morgan G.

Yelp
Has everything you'd need from an Asian grocer. I was even able to find certain hard to find Japanese skincare

Tara B.

Yelp
Still my go to spot for Sake and Sashimi cuts! Large grocery store of mostly imported Asian goods and my go to spot for Japanese goods!

Brigitte B.

Yelp
Such a huge assortment of Asian foods and goods. I have found many delicious foods here and an amazing assortment of ingredients to create your own recipes. I do purchase pre-made food here as it is usually just me eating, and I won't prepare so much food. But at Uwajimiya, I can eat a varied and delicious meal without the effort, and to be honest, I don't know how to make the food. My favorite is their cooked porkbelly, it's sooooo good ! Their prices are higher than the smaller Asian markets, but their selections are huge !!!

Patty W.

Yelp
This place has it all. Cooked food, with a poke station and sliced sashimi and musubi and hot options. Live seafood with crab and lobster Bakery and a beard papa Good veg selection with six kinds of mushrooms and herbs (I noted they even have culantro (as opposed to the commonly found cilantro). A ramen selection for the Korean instant ramen loving family. Snacks and stocking stuffers And a kinokuniya bookstore!!! We came on a Sunday after church and went through the register with a lunch selection that we ate in the car. Then we walked through almost every aisle.

Robert H.

Yelp
Uwajimaya is a grocery store started in the Seattle area. They have stayed very focused in their limited expansion and dedication to quality and customer service. They source packaged and fresh foods from the Asian basin. That means no matter how knowledgeable you are about the foods of one of those countries, you might have questions. I have always found the staff could answer those questions and lead me to the place in the store with those ingredients: fresh, frozen, cooled or shelf stable. They source from local to international, fresh, frozen, preserved. They have the fish for DIY at home sushi. They have poke, by the pound or over white or brown rice. They have groceries and produce to take out - or eat in. They also have cookware, books and clothing. My latest discovery is their new garlic scallop poke with asparagus. It's crunchy-chewy shredded scallops - with their sweetness, not so green but still slightly crunchy asparagus, a very light soy sauce and vinegar dressing, red pepper flakes and I would guess white pepper. Not much garlic flavor to my taste, but I don't think a strong garlic taste would favor this dish. It's not cheap, but it is good - maybe put it on a slice of cucumber, a potato chip, or a cracker for hors d'oeuvres? It could be a side garnish for a salad to. The staff, over more than ten years of my experience been first rate answering questions, serving and checking. They get quality, Japanese quality, learned from Edwards Deming in America. Uwajimaya is always an experience found nowhere else.

Yelp
May as well be Disneyland. Coming here is an extremely rare treat for me since I live in Oregon City and it's quite a drive, but my god it's so so worth it. You can pretty much spend as much time as you want to here, then visit the incredible bookstore, and hop over to Raman Ryoma next door after you're done for the best Ramen ever. It's easy to get lost if you are just browsing because you kind of need to know what you are looking for, but the selection is endless. The prepared food section is 100% hands down the best you will find in any store EVER. The unagi kabayaki eel is an absolute must buy. Even if you aren't especially into Japanese culture or asian foods, you owe it to yourself to come here once. I always end up having to stop myself from buying too much because the selection of amazing food is ENDLESS.

Darryl D.

Yelp
Best Sake selection, great prices, excellent variety of Japanese food products. Very friendly and helpful staff.

Lindy D.

Yelp
My favorite Asian store to shop at plus being able to shop the bookstore as well.it has all my favorites and always has some new products for me to try.i can shop in the store for several hours.i always know I need to bring plenty of money cause I shop a great deal and I bring home lots of goods.

Fiona L.

Yelp
Look no further if you need any Japanese goods. It's a treat every time I come here. I love to splurge my money here because everything just looks so good! It is bit of a drive from Vancouver, but you make the drive worth it for the stuff you end up getting. For sushi grade fish, look no further than here. Some days, we'll decide to stay in for dinner and we'll buy all the items needed. What I love about the store is how they have cooked food ready to go. I can never forget about getting a few spam musubis. And of course, if you get hungry shopping, they have a ramen shop next door.

J H.

Yelp
Cheating customers. Inari Sushi SCAM! INARI is only half filled. Unsuspecting Uwajimaya customers are being ripped off. Where else is UWAJIMAYA cheating their trusting and loyal customers? Unbelievable betrayal of customers trust. Also, the rice was hard! It is as if they are reusing their day old rice, and stuffing it in their sushi and passing it off as fresh. Quality and trust hits rock bottom. BUYERS BEWARE!!! Board of Health needs to check Uwajimaya food preparation and sanitation practices.

Lei I.

Yelp
Living in a rural area, it lacks the ingredients I need to prepare my Asian meals, specifically hot pot. As well as snacks from back home (Hawaii). First time in any new store or chain location, everything can get pretty overwhelming. Our first visit, they were social distancing and limiting the amount of people allowed in the store at a time. We waited in line in the parking lot. It moved slowly but as the months went on, there was no longer a line and we could go in without a wait. Since we haven't been in this store before, we went through every aisle, just so we could notate what was available to us aside from the items we had listed on our grocery list. I don't have another Uwaji to compare this to but it feels like it's a small store? I could be mistaken, but when it gets crowded, you gotta maneuver around everyone with your little carts. The only small appliance we purchased from here is a rice cooker! I know right, what Asian didn't have a rice cooker prior? Well prior we bought one from Wal-Mart and it wasn't the same. IYKYK. You need the legit Japanese rice cooker for it to turn out right. The small appliance and other kitchenware was located in the gifts area and you'd need to purchase it before putting them into your cart. Probably to prevent people from damaging or stealing them? One item I was tempted to purchase but didn't until another visit was their spicy ahi. NOPE, not the same but it somewhat satisfied the craving for it. Japanese merchandise that is in Japanese characters has English translation stickers on it. Don't worry! Also, you'll be able to hear all the random knick knacks calling out to you, buy me, buy me! Around holidays, the store has holiday related merchandise displayed on the right side of the store as you enter. The ingredients we purchased for our hot pot dinner covered 2 nights. Which is pretty good because 1 night eating out for hot pot alone is already expensive! This way we save money and eat what we want and how much. We buy the meats (thinly sliced meat, meatballs), veggies not available in our area (enoki mushrooms), tsukune, and bottled broth. One thing we did notice is the broth we'd usually purchase was low on stock. So we'd purchase an additional just in case we couldn't find it the next time we came shopping. We shopped here because a friend of mine recommended it while I was searching for Asian grocery stores. Decent sized parking lot, 3 entryways to this lot. Sometimes it can get a bit crazy, just look where you're going. Felt like the pricing was reasonable compared to eating out at a restaurant. Receipts come out to around $100. This varies depending if we want to buy all the veggies here and if we sneak extra snacks into our cart. They have fresh and frozen seafood. A few tanks of live sea creatures. Not much of a fan of cooking my own seafood so... yeah... I've also glanced at a section of ready made food/snacks to go; hot or cold. Haven't had the chance to try any since we come in full from lunch. I've seen spam musubi and bentos. Public restrooms located towards the back, between the refrigerated beverages and meats!

Spamo O.

Yelp
This is an amazing grocery with so many foods to explore and a wonderful gift area. They also have great poke and carry excellent produce and wonderful baked goods. There is also a great bookstore accessible in the back of the grocery area. Worth the trip to Beaverton to patronize this wonderful store.

Kim G.

Yelp
Absolutely love this market! It is always well stocked, clean, organized and filled with so many unique products that I'm always discovering something new which inspires me to cook different Asian dishes. Trips to Uwajimaya are not quick, pick up my groceries, leave kind of trips. It's an adventure! Iget lost and mesmerized in the aisles and can spend 20 minutes just in the sauce and condiment aisle! While I often shop at Hong Phat in SE, and I love that market, Uwajimaga is an entirely different shopping experience! The quality and variety is so apparent. When you walk down the sauce and condiment aisle, you will find most every Asian country represented, as sauces do vary by country, and by region within a country. To name a few, they have pantry staples for Japanese, Thai, Indian, Southern Indian, Korean, Singapore, Malaysian, Philippines, Vietnamese, Lao dishes and so much more! Let me tell you and give you permission to buy pre made curry pastes and other seasoning packages. In Asian cooking, there are so many unique ingredients that go into creating a sauce so if you are just starting to dabble, this is the way to go. While I never would use pre made seasoning packs for other cuisines, I have no shame in using a pre made Panang curry paste, for example. A tip for when purchasing prepaid curries or pastes, the shelves at eye level are the premium brands that come with a higher price point. If you bend down and look at the lower shelves, you will find the same item, but one not marketed to Americans, at a third of the price. For example, I was searching for Thai red curry paste for these killer peanut butter cookies I've created. The name brand pastes are $7.99 and they are quite good. But on the shelf below was Maersi pastes for $1.50 and on the bottom shelf, Mae Ploy for $.99. So I picked up a few cans of the Mae Ploy red curry paste and a few cans of Panang curry for less than one of the name brand Jars. Plus they come in smaller four ounce sizes so they paste won't go to waste. You are welcome! The fish and seafood here is so fresh! What a fabulous selection! Even live crab, lobster, clams in tanks. They even have premade sushi and sashimi in the grab and go area. In the freezer area, they have shrimp, crab, scallops but also shrimp tempura and crab cakes that you can cook at home. No need to deep fry; they bake up perfectly in the oven. A dozen tempura shrimp for just $5.99. Deal. The meat counter is incredible, so many cuts of meat that you can not find elsewhere, like thin slices of Wagyu or Kobe beef for Shabu-shabu. You can buy whatever portion you need, which is wonderful if you are cooking for one, two or 10! Quality of the meat is unparalleled. So worth it! The produce is fresh, beautiful and they have lots of organic available. Get the mangoes! And lots of fresh herbs for Thai and Vietnamese cooking. Unlike Hong Phat, they are labeled in English so I don't have to pull out my translator app when I'm buying coriander, mint and Thai basil for my salad wraps. In the hot food section, you can buy a whole roasted duck for just $12! What? Of course roasted chicken is also available. Plus hot food like fried rice, spring rolls and stir fry dishes made to order. To the far right of the market they have a wonderful selection of sake, the bottles are all so beautiful. An assortment of rice cookers, woks, tea kettles and kitchen gadgets. Picked up some navy blue soup spoons for my home made wonton and ramen soup! Do check out the candy and snacks. Japanese sugar plums come in small bags of brightly colored, small sugar treats. So cute! Salty, dried shrimp, and other snacks not typically found in American markets that will captivate your attention. Just buy them, try them, YOLO. Same with the Bakery area. The cookies, breads and pastries from the Vietnamese bakery, An Xuyen, are some of the best in Portland. Get the macaroons, butter cookies and walnut crisps. Plus the cream puffs made fresh from Beard Papa located right behind the bakery, but not a part of Uwajimaya, but conveniently located right here. They have a separate section of the store for papers and pens. it's located in the far back, right corner. Here you can find the most gorgeous papers for wrapping gifts; I use them to decoupage vases for unique and hand made gifts for friends. Pens and markers in every color of the rainbow! Notepads and journals plus the most lovely water colored greeting cards. This store is a gem! It completely transports me. I laugh when I think about the heavy tea pots I carried home from Shanghai or the dishes I bought in Thailand and I could have just bought them here! I could go on and on. And I think I just did! You will just have to go and experience this market for yourself. 5 stars and then some!

Yelp
A recent last-minute visit treated me to an example of the worst customer service imaginable in the self-check. Before returning home to Milwaukie, my sweetheart and I decided to shop for yummy pastries on our return to Milwaukie. We should have realized how close to closing our timing was, which came into focus as I began the self-checkout process. Using the store's handbasket, I filled it with various baked goods and swept through the sections I wanted to suss out. Once at the checkout, the young male staffer carefully watched me as I scanned my items. I didn't bring a bag in as I felt confident I would not be loading up with grocery items requiring bagging. First, the young squire noticed that a bar code wasn't scanning and appeared behind me without a sound to rectify the situation. I thanked him and received silence in return. Once I completed the scanning, the clerk abruptly snatched up the handbasket, leaving me with the impression that he somehow suspected I would attempt to wander out of the door with the precious handbasket in tow. I paid and then neatly assembled my purchase to carry away, noticing his insipid stare. Easily three times his age, I found his critical demeanor inappropriate, as if he were profiling me. Oh well. Can't say that doesn't happen occasionally. I thought it was my long ponytail he found distressing. Or was it my fashion sense? As a horticulturist, I dress the part. But, in the PNW, outdoorsy types share a similar style of dress. I'm a flower guy and not a gun-toting Orygun confederate. My clothes were clean, my face shaven, and my hair neatly tied back. I'm 5'10" and wondered if the kid was intimidated by my being taller than him. I've shopped at Uwajimaya for decades and enjoy a neutral shopping experience. But on this visit, it just wasn't going to be. Where does the store find these disagreeable, unfriendly, and judgemental members of metro Portland's hands-off generation? I left thinking to myself of the times I would remind my community college students that they were now in the mean streets. This ain't high school, lil homies. Frankly, I doubt I'll be returning to Beaverton's Uwajimaya any time soon. - @daFigz™ PS: Inflation hasn't done the Uwajimaya shopper any favors, as your dollar seems undervalued based on the ridiculous price hikes.

Michael S.

Yelp
It is impossible for my family (and me) not to be a fan of Uwajimaya's quality. Impossible, I said. So, don't even try to sway me below 4-stars ... although I'm definitely listening and influenced by the sparse selection and premium prices. The low-volume of sales may be what limits the selection and what I can afford, but I still relish any visit to Uwajimaya in Beaverton to get a bag or two of things that we only seem to find there. * Japanese snacks * Asian sweets * Hawaiian nuts * Korean spicy ramen * Beard Papa's creampuffs * Authentic sake * Southeast Asian fruits * Matcha! Matcha! Matcha! * Frozen gyoza * Ponzu & Goma sauces * Premium short grain rice * Fresh & frozen seafood * Dried fungi and seaweed * Extra hot curry * Soft Oyatsupan breads Wow, just typing that list reminded me that I need to go back to Uwajimaya ASAP. Even though this supermarket won't be for everyday shopping, it definitely meets a lot of my special grocery needs ... and, therefore, it's impossible (I said it again) for me to not be a fan of Uwajimaya's quality.

Yelp
A must explore for foodies that are looking to expand their home cooking options. You will find all the ingredients for your APAC favorites as well as some freezer must haves.

Rose G.

Yelp
Large Asian grocery store with take-out food from hot tables, fish market, fruits and veggies, butcher and extensive groceries and gifts. Pretty much anything you might need for an Asian menu. Highly recommend.

Lakshmi M.

Yelp
First time I went to Uwajimaya, I think I spent 20 min the noodle section alone looking at all of the things I wanted to grab. Uwajimaya has all of the East Asian staples you could want from noodles to tofu to miso to gochujang. They also happen to carry the exact chili oil I love and cannot find literally anywhere else. There are a variety of baked goods inside and some food court-esque options as well. The produce variety is great and they definitley have the asian staples I want like okra and a plethora of mushrooms *including the reallyyyy pricey kind*. Initially, I was a little shocked by people saying that there was an Indian section here because the first time I went it was non-existent. HOWEVER, the last couple times I've been here, I did see an small Indian foods section had taken root! Pleasant surprise. It still would not be my number 1 spot to grab Indian groceries but I do appreciate the effort. Prices are a bit steeper than I'd like, but what can you do -- this is the place with the most variety and the largest amt of goods in one place. I guess you do sacrifice a little with the cost in return for convenience. Parking is pretty easy since there's a huge lot and you shouldn't have any trouble fighting for spots.

Yelp
I took a trip in search of Ranbutan, Kumquats, and instant ramen on Wednesday. I just enjoy walking around Uwajimaya and seeing all the cool food and housewares. I was on lunch at work and one of my coworkers had this odd thing. It was red and had weird hairs all over it. I asked and she gave me one. It was amazing. Like a cross between mochi and a gummy bear. Great texture and flavor. Unfortunately I was unable to find the Ranbutan or the Kumquats this time, but I got a wide variety of ramen and that is a win.

Yelp
We have a dear friend who visits from California every year and he requests a trip to Uwajimaya like it was a tourist attraction! I can't blame him as this is the type of market where I grab a shopping cart and mosey up and down every single aisle, taking my time, reveling in all the things there are to discover. Many things I've never seen or heard of before. You'll find everything Japanese, plus Thai, Indian, Southern Indian, Korean, Singapore, Malaysian, Philippines, Vietnamese, and Lao. The fresh fish and seafood is pristine including live crabs, lobster, and clams. Behind the meat counter you'll find Wagyu and Kobe beef. Equally fresh is what you'll find in the produce section. I love when the Asian pears from Korea are in season, there's nothing better! And the freshest herbs available for Asian cooking: Thai basil, mint, lemongrass, cilantro, all labeled in English (thank you). In the hot food/deli section you can buy whole "roasted to perfection" duck, 8 kinds of poke, from lomi salmon, ahi tuna, and fresh shrimp. Poke Bento boxes are available too: two scoops of your choice poke, seaweed salad and steamed white rice. Lots of prepared food too (the crab cakes are phenomenal) so all you have to do is heat it up when you get home for that perfect meal. Don't forget those spam musubis either. Don't forget to check out the sweets and desserts section. I try not to swoon over the Beard Papa cream puffs (not located right in the store but just conveniently behind it) plus the Vietnamese cookies like macaroons, butter cookies and walnut crisps. I dare you to walk by without drooling. And somehow a package or two (or three or four) always jumps into my shopping cart without me seeing! Then, of course, is the housewares and gadgets section. Beautiful Japanese porcelain, rice cookers, chop sticks, bamboo cooking utensils, every kind of plastic colander imaginable, tea kettles, woks, and most important Hello Kitty merchandise by Sanrio. It takes me back to childhood. Look through the gorgeous papers for gift wrapping and crafts, pens and markers, and various types of notebooks for journalling or whatever you care to use them for. The store is very clean and organized and the staff are friendly and knowledgeable. There's nothing intimidating about shopping here, it's a most enjoyable experience.

Yelp
Uwajimaya has been the stand-out Asian grocery store in the Portland metro area for as long as I can remember. While Fubonn (Chinese), Hong Phat (Vietnamese), H-Mart (Korean) and others stock many of the same products, there are significant, notable differences in quality, as well as vast deficiencies of variety. Whether this is due to a difference of culture, or one of philosophy, is a matter for debate. But as a perennial patron of all of these businesses, I've begun to notice a few stark contrasts. Many of these sister stores inhabit the shells of former business, and never quite fill them out. They feel...not exactly dirtier...perhaps "less pristine" is a more accurate (and less harsh) descriptor. Not all the differences are immediately apparent; they only become visible via contrast and experience. Additionally, while Uwajimaya carries products that appeal to the broader Asian cultural and culinary oeuvre, these other stores do not seem to reciprocate when it comes to Japanese foodstuffs. This is the "meat" of my "beef" with other Asian stores in Portland. Speaking of meat and beef, one department where Uwajimaya truly establishes its excellence is its meat department. There are cuts of meat here that simply cannot be found at other Asian groceries (believe me, I have looked). One pertinent example: thinly sliced beef, ready for a shabu-shabu, sukiyaki or gyu donburi, come in small (single portion) to family-sized packs, and although expensive, their quality is unparalleled, and (sadly) found only at Uwajimaya. And what chef, gourmand or foodie would dare argue that Wagyu, Kobe or Mishima beef are inferior cuts of meat? That's right, none. Another stand-out section (one more among many) would be Uwajimaya's selection of candies, cookies and other sweets. One need only count the myriad variety of Kit-Kat flavors on offer here, to realize that Uwajimaya revels in the Japanese cultural philosophy of monozukuri, or constanty seeking perfection. This same philosophy of excellence can be observed in many other departments: the hot and cold deli, healthcare and beauty products, hell, even the dishware on sale consists of a significantly higher percentage of porcelain ceramics than cheap, mass produced plastic plates and bowls. These same departments at other Asian stores are pale imitators with inferior products. I won't touch on the Kinokuniya book store, which continues this trend of excellence, because it is a separate business, despite inhabiting an internal corner of the same retail space. My only gripe against them would be that their prices are rather steep, but that comes with the territory of importing highly specialized products to a niche market. I would give Uwajimaya 10 stars if I could, but I will dock them half because they are a 30 minute drive from my house. They will have to settle with a perfect 5 stars instead. Now, if you'll excuse me, I have a gyu donburi waiting for me, and I don't want it to get cold.

Yelp
What a market. They have everything a person could want in an Asian market! Great selections with fresh vegetables and fruits. And their bakery looks amazing. And don't get me started on their prepared food section! Fantastic!!!

Yelp
I have been shopping here for many years and love the consistent quality and variety of foods and items I find. Any ingredients for cooking Asian recipes, or cravings for Asian snacks, this is the place to find them. Their sake and plum wine selection is impressive. They also sell the most beautiful bowls, dishes, and tea sets, plenty of fun gift items, and a ton of manga and books in the attached bookstore. Staff is always friendly and helpful, and the store is always clean and well-lit. I discover a new food every time I visit.
