Best Sushi Restaurants in the East Bay | Eater SF

"This longtime Rockridge mainstay isn’t the kind of sushi restaurant where diners will find the rarest or most unusual fish selections, but for all of the staples — salmon and hamachi nigiri, simple rolls, and the like — Uzen remains one of the best in the business." - Luke Tsai

Cozy and calm. A small place next to Hudson coffee shop and to Oakland library on college ave. Authentic sushi complimented by efficient service makes this small sushi eat stands out.

This little hole in the wall on College Avenue in Oakland delivers top notch Sushi prepared by its expert Itamae. It is a small place designed for a discerning clientele and delivers either hand picked sushi on its list, with available variations such as quail egg added to its sea urchin hand rolls (very tasty). All of the sushi is very well presented and very fresh. It also has an omakase selection where you can yield to the chef to choose you the best choice he has available, prepared with exquisite care. It is a fun place to hang out, where you could either watch the chef do his work or find a table by the window and enjoy your sushi while people watching on the famous College Avenue. The service was great and the food was excellent.

We have been coming here for many years sporadically. It is my husbands favorite sushi place in Rockridge. The nigiri is big so I have to cut it in half but it fits as a bite if you have a big mouth. There is complimentary miso soup 🥣 and salad 🥗 with a creamy dressing. No spoon is provided so drink from the bowl There is a large hill of wasabi and ginger provided. Not sure who can eat that much wasabi but the extra ginger without asking for it is appreciated 😃 There is lunch service we have not attended before. The door is handicap accessible. The bathroom is in the back. Lots of menus and specials of the day along with beer wine and sakes. Metered street parking during certain hours or free neighborhood parking. Easy walk from the Rockridge BART.

Google
Their sushi is really fantastic. I believe this is the most authentic Japanese restaurant in this area.

I love everything I ordered! Sweet Shrimp/amaebi: so good! Squid: my favorite, love the flavor of the herb inside Uni: good! But it will be better if uni is from Japan Egg: pretty good! Unagi: so soft, totally different from what you get from supermarket Salmon: this is okay, not that special

Great food! Sat at bar and had fantastic service. Tonkatsu was perfectly crisp. Fish was very fresh and flavorful.

Google
Decent soba and tempura, but the kitchen needs to improve its sad, soggy chicken karaage. The order came very late, after we had finished everything else. My husband and I each had a bite and then sent it back and asked our server to remove the almost $9.00 charge for this order from the bill. It was a bad way to end a meal.

Delicious sushi! My family comes here every other week because of the consistently great food, super fast service, and calm but happy atmosphere.

Yelp
Our favorite go to neighborhood sushi spot - food is amazing, wonderful service and a great location. Sushi is super fresh and high quality and everything is delicious! We love Uzen!

Yelp
This was after a couple of bites. My chicken was burnt on the bottom and was intentionally turned burnt side down. We left and had dinner at another restaurant.

Yelp
Loved everything about our dinner. Cold buckwheat noodles were the showstopper. The friendly staff and ambiance can't be beat. Can't wait to come back again.

Yelp
Authentic, fresh sushi in a non-snobby setting. My mom, a Japanese lady who is super picky about sushi, asks to come here whenever she's in town. Recommend highly.

Yelp
This place is nice. It's a quiet little hideaway. The service is friendly and the food is good and reasonably priced. Parking can be tough, you may want to Uber.

Yelp
WHEN: saturday ~ May 13, 2023 ~ 5pm PARKING: street parking with 2 hour parking on side streets A very small and intimate restaurant that is open for very few hours throughout the week. Got there right when they opened and sat at the bar. They have a very affordable omakase that comes in 2 sets. I chose to get the B set for $89 which came with miso soup, appetizers (4 small dishes), and 19 pieces of sushi! Unlike traditional omakase, the dishes are basically served all together. Which means you get a massive 19 piece plate of sushi! I would like to give out a special shout out to the appetizers that were extremally flavorful. The sushi itself was very fresh. They were fat pieces of fish and I could barely finish it. This was my first omakase experience so I don't have much to compare it with but this dinner was a huge treat so I made sure to really enjoy it.

Yelp
I'm visiting from out of town and went to Uzen a few nights ago. The space is small and quaint, the ambiance is beautiful and very chill. The staff members (both the server and sushi chefs) were kind, sociable, and helpful. I got salmon teriyaki (comes with miso soup, salad and rice) and a yellowtail roll. The fish was fresh and tasty, miso was delicious. Overall great food for the price!

Yelp
This is my favorite restaurant in the world, and I say this with utmost honesty. I've had sushi in Japan, I've eaten at Michelin star restaurants around the world, and nothing compares to Uzen. This quaint neighborhood spot is home of the freshest fish you'll find in the Bay Area, and the most perfectly seasoned sushi rice, all for a very reasonable price. My personal favorites are their salmon rolls, trout nigiri, Uzen udon (best udon broth ever!), and their ten zaru soba. They have a very reasonable lunch special, and their other daily specials are excellent. The service here is really attentive, the food has been consistent in the 15 years I've been coming here, and the sushi chefs have been here forever. The interior is modern, with high ceilings. They have a tatami room upstairs which used to be used to seat larger parties but I think has now been converted to storage (please bring it back!). Since their restaurant is a bit small, I definitely recommend making a reservation if you're coming for dinner, particularly on a Friday or Saturday night. Moral of the story: if you haven't been to Uzen yet, you're missing out!

Yelp
Best Tonkatsu (spicy or not) in the east bay! The spicy is JUST right! The sushi is perfect-soft moist rice in the maki and nigiri rolls, perfectly prepared with the balance of sweet/tart and pressed firmly but not too hard. The mood is joyous, the sushi chef truly enjoys their work and all staff are pleasant and accommodating. Dig in! Highly recommend:)

Yelp
Meh is the adjective I would use to describe this place overall. The rolls were inexpensive, however small and not much sashimi inside. The quality of fish was average. Service was average. For 2 ppl, $80 with no alcohol--left feeling hungry. Probably would not revisit.

Yelp
Quick Summary - Cozy interior - Good for families - BGM, jazz themed Ghibli music - Fish tastes fresh and sweet - Entered hungry, left comfortably full - The door is automatic, it opens and closes on its own (noticed more than half of guests aggressively dragging the door closed) Feeling like sushi that day, we looked around restaurants and stumbled upon this one. The entrance appears narrow but when we went inside, it extends to the far end of the building. It felt homey in a way due to the window shaped opening at the center of the restaurant. When seated, we were given five different menus. We're not drinkers, so that reduces it to three, yet there were a couple of minutes to mull over. One of them is a menu list and we were given a pencil. This listed different sushi netas. I looked around this menu, but it didn't mention the price. We could have asked the staff, but it was a busy night, so it took a while for them to arrive at our table. Also, on this particular day, we were thinking of eating a filling meal than just one or two pieces of sushi. After discussing on the options, we both landed on the dinner section of the sashimi. When the staff member arrived, we asked on how the side dishes are going to be like for the dinner set comes with a salad, miso soup, and rice. They clarified with us, that each menu in the dinner set (except for the ones with sushi rice). The salad and the miso soup arrived first, and then the sashimi and rice came at a good time (soon after we finished eating the side dishes). The salad was drizzled with sesame salad dressing, one of my favorite dressings. It's creamy and has a subtle tanginess to it. It was a cold evening, so the miso soup was a good starter to warm ourselves up for the main dish. The sashimi plate arrived with roughly 10-12 pieces of sashimi, grouped by fish. I have eaten a few sushi places but it felt like the first to eat one and say, "wow, so fresh and sweet!" It could be the cold season, but even as I write this, I recall how good each of the pieces were at the time. Along with it tasting sweet and fresh, it was also melting in the mouth. What was a good cherry on top moment was that after eating this dish we were both full and content. I would definitely return here again to try their dinner set again.

Yelp
Amazingly fresh and delicious sushi at killer prices! Uzen has just become my new favorite sushi spot in Rockridge. Not sure what took me so long to try this place, but it is incredible! Stopped by for lunch for the first time a little over a month ago. Their restaurant is located on the busy College Avenue block amongst several other popular restaurants. It's a tiny space and the signage isn't the easiest to spot, but once you make it inside, you'll feel right at home. I arrived around 11:30 am on a Monday and there was nobody else inside. They have some bangin' lunch special deals! Ended up ordering their assorted nigiri with cucumber and California rolls lunch special. The nigiri came with some of the freshest fish that I've had in a long while! Both the California and cucumber rolls were both super tasty. The lunch special also came with miso soup and salad. The salad wasn't anything too special, but it was fresh and I enjoyed the dressing. The miso soup had wonderful flavor. The best part was that all of this was under $15! If you know Rockridge, then you know it's hard to find a good cheapish lunch nowadays (especially when it comes to sushi). Ended up coming back a few weeks later and ordered their Dragon and Lion Kings rolls. Both were so delicious, but that Dragon roll simply stole the show. Super fresh avocado and beautifully fried shrimp tempura. The rolls were not only tasty, but they were beautifully plated too. Chef Kasu was there and brought me complimentary soup and salad even though it wasn't a lunch special. He also gave me a sample of their deep fried baby octopus appetizer. I'll be honest, I'm not a fan of octopus. But this was fried to absolute perfection. It helped to mask the consistency for me (which is usually what turns me off about octopus). It was a delightful try. Service was excellent during both of my visits from start to finish. I ended up ordering some food to-go for my staff (shrimp tempura appetizer and shrimp tempura udon). My staff was raving about their food, especially the tempura udon. I love udon, so this will be on my list to try next time. I've also heard amazing things about their omakase, so I will eventually be giving this a try too in the future. The inside is small but super comfy and inviting. It's also very clean. All in all, I'm so impressed with Uzen! I'm so excited that I was able to finally try them out. Looking forward to many more visits here. Would highly recommend to anyone who's looking for fresh and delicious sushi at affordable prices.

Yelp
Ate here for sushi at the bar The Omakase was average and uninspired- The thing I really didn't like was the service. I was asked several times by the waitress/ owner if I lived nearby and that they hoped to see me again - this was communicated was not warm and welcoming but cold, desperate and pushy - very desperate and condescending. The restaurant was completely empty during my meal at dinnertime. I feel that locals know this place is no good and really hope a better place opens in their spot...a waste

Yelp
We came here on a Monday afternoon after trying to go to multiple brunch spots. Who knew so many places would be closed on a Monday? I seriously blame Covid for the sporadic/inaccurate hours. We ordered the Saba, salmon and egg nigiri, lion king roll, sushi, nigiri, karage and chicken lunch specials. The chicken special's portion were a little small but the others were just right for lunch. I especially enjoyed the Saba nigiri as it tasted super fresh. When we visited, the power went out but my friend was super clutch with the cash. Their salad and miso soups with the lunch special were tasty!

Yelp
It's no doubt that i love coming here. I've only been here a few times but will definitely make time to come out again more often. Staff and sushi chefs are all so nice and welcoming. Sitting at the bar and having the nigiri pieces placed in front of you on a huge leaf is such a vibe. Never too crowded, have always been seated right away. Give it a try!

Yelp
My aunt and her mom took me out for my belated birthday dinner. I haven't ever noticed this place even though I live in the same neighborhood and Uzen has been there for at least 20 years! It's a small-ish very clean place, with very good food. I am not an expert on anything Japanese, but to me it felt authentic. We ordered gindara ( miso black cod ), ohitashi (blanched spinach), grilled eggplant appetizer, and a sushi special (salmon with fish roe and asparagus). For the main dish, I had Unaju (Barbequed eel over rice). My favorite was the miso black cod, although it was a very small piece. It was nice and fatty, very satisfying. The eggplant app and the eel dish were also yummy. Blanched spinach was ok, just the way it sounds - bland basic veggie dish. I couldn't taste the bonito flakes much even though there were plenty of those. They brought water and tea. The tea was a bit too strong and bitter for my taste, so they brought me a cup of plain hot water per my request. I left feeling full but not weighed down. Very satisfied and will def be back. Oh, and their bathroom is super clean. I especially appreciate it because I went out to a highly rated restaurant where I could smell the bathroom long before I could actually see its door. At Uzen, you can't smell anything offensive even when you are inside their bathroom.

Yelp
Best Kept Secret! ;) Super clean, very old school vibes!! It's been here for 30 years!!! This place is not usually packed which is kinda unfortunate. But I'm sure once people go and try to the food they'll soon realize it's got the best sushi in the area hands down! Service is the best. The main server even remembered me! The entire staff was so accommodating! I really suggest the bar service! You'll get the full experience :) Go and support this awesome local sushi joint!!

Yelp
I love uzen. The food here is always fresh. It's definitely quite small inside, so be sure to make a reservation if you are a larger party!
google avatar

Cassandra L.

Yelp
Save your money. All in all, a big disappointment. Ordered the gindara appetizer and was served an over cooked, leathery piece of fish. The tamago was greenish in the middle and tasted as though it had been sitting in the fridge for a week. The California roll is a very mushy consistency, but at least appeared to be real crab (found a little shell remnant in it.) The decor/furniture looked as tho it was styled in the early 90s and felt outdated. The music playing was Jazz which felt out of place for the environment. Overall, it's not worth the money. Made worse by the fact that we went during a heat wave and there was no AC or fans going so the restaurant was hot.

Yelp
Note - they open for lunch at 11:30a, not 11:00a. I had tried calling multiple times at 11:00a to no avail. I usually crave Japanese food very often and was surprised that I had not reviewed this Rockridge sushi spot yet. My parents had treated me for lunch yesterday and it was overall pretty tasty. Order: Uzen Udon lunch (came with tempura shrimp, shiitake mushroom, fish cake slices, and tofu)- the broth and noodles were delicious and hit the right umami notes. The tempura was average, batter got soggy. I usually like the crispier tempura with a mix of the panko bread crumbs. 49er roll was good, I liked the flavor combo with the tangy lemon slices but it was a bit small and could have used thicker salmon slices. The avocado inside was ample and buttery tasting. My parents enjoyed their assorted sushi and salmon teriyaki meals. The presentation was very clean and neat, and prices were reasonable for what you get. I'd order from here again, especially for the yummy udon and I'd like to try more of the sushi and nigiri.

Yelp
I came here for dinner on my 30th birthday for the first time. I got to try Omakase for the first time. That is where the chef decides what to serve you and sends you a ton of awesomeness! Everything was so delicious and I got to try so many different types of Nigiri that I wouldn't normally order. I think the Sea Trout was my favorite. I truly do not remember the name of each piece of Nigiri (I wish I did!!). It was such a tasty birthday dinner. The service here that evening was not that great. There were only a few people dining in and it seemed like the servers were really focused on all of the to-go orders. We tried to flag them down for more sushi rice and soy sauce and eventually had to get up to go ask for it. Parking wise, we parked down one of the neighborhood streets and walked.

Yelp
The family and I went on a Monday night so it was less crowded, the best time to go IMO. Service was excellent, friendly staff. The wait was pretty quick since it wasn't busy like the weekend crowd usually is. Gindara (grilled miso cod fish) is THE BEST tasting fish I have ever had. It's a small sliver of miso-marinated fish that's grilled -- and I tell you, I forgot my name coz this particular dish was so dang good! It's my favorite on their menu. The rest of their sushi options are terrific! The best CA roll this side of the Bay coz the rolls are not so packed with rice and very tasty. Also, they use real crab, not imitation. I highly recommend the fatty tuna sashimi. Sooo good and fresh! Their miso soup is great, too -- not too salty and it has a tiny hint of fish flavor to it but the taste is actually a welcomed experience, a departure from the usually salty flavor. The place is right in the nice part of Oakland, Rockridge area. Parking may be a bit of a challenge especially on the weekend but get there early to anticipate spending time looking for a place to park. Highly recommended! Hope you all get a chance to visit coz it's so worth it!

Yelp
my absolute favorite Japanese spot in the east bay. we stumbled upon it because we recently moved in down the street and we've been so impressed ever since. Their fish is as fresh as you can get. The udon is simple and delicious. We came back on our anniversary for the omakase and it was no frills, worth every penny, and extremely affordable. The owners are lovely and overall a 10/10 experience. Highly recommend to everyone!

Yelp
Great fresh sashimi, nigiri sushi is excellent, not too much rice, just right. Upstairs private room, great service. Chef is genuinely Japanese and trained there.

Yelp
My favorite restaurant in Oakland, hands down. My partner & I LOVE LOVE LOVE Uzen. Best sushi in the East Bay, for sure. We used to love going to Uzen to have date night (pre covid). The restaurant itself is so cute. It's on College Ave. with all the other cute restaurants & shops. The interior is minimalistic and modern. I loved sitting by the window, but sitting at the bar is also cute and the sushi chefs are so entertaining to watch. We always get the same thing: Salmon nigiri Hamachi nigiri California roll Alaska roll Uzen roll The nigiri's are always spot on. Never fishy, always fresh. Consistently solid sushi. The California roll is my favorite because they use real crab! Alaska roll has salmon & avocado-so yummy! And Uzen roll has shrimp tempura which always manages to arrive super crunchy, despite the added delivery time! I absolutely adore Uzen. You know the owners care about their customers because there have been times when I call to make an order and no one answers, but I soon get a call back from the owner asking if I called! The amount of effort that goes into calling people back, I LOVE that.

Yelp
Fantastic food. Tonkatsu was perfectly crisped. Omakase was delicious. Sat at the bar and had great service.

Yelp
是一个类似sushi吧一样的小地方。食物种类不多。有lunch special,有寿司卷,寿司,基本是这样。简单。 我点了bluefin tuna, yellow tail, and Salmon sushi.

Yelp
Super good, fresh fish, good value. 2 of us got chef's choice for $69 each and the pieces were fresh, and thick, and generous portions. With soup, salad, appetizers, and a lot of sushi, I was pretty satisfied. Service was good, ambiance was basic. Recommended.

Yelp
This place has been a SOLID Japanese restaurant for over 20 years in Rockridge and I believe was is SF previously. Everything on the menu stay consistent especially the quality. I popped in the first time in a decade plus and all the delicious memories came rushing back! My go to is always the sushi selection. I had Toro, salmon, ocean trout and the seared A5 Wagyu, spider roll and octopus cucumber salad this time. And ended with tamagotchi and sea eel. Everything was super fresh and to perfection! Def try all the appetizers! Oysters, hamachi Kama, miso cod and Chilean sea bass is one of my favorites. Also the broth for udon and soba have been perfected over decades. You can't go wrong with this spot! The owner Kazu and Makoto are welcoming and have been behind the sushi bar the last 20 plus years!

Yelp
The food was delicious! Sushi rice was perfect. Super friendly chef and staff. My husband, friend, and I ordered the omakase. Every bite was delicious. Less than a week later we're already mask for more. Highly recommend!

Yelp
You know it's good when you're still sitting in the restaurant and you're writing the review! Hands down, BEST unagi I've ever had. We had sashimi and nigiri too, all very fresh! We live in the South Bay but this will be our go-to east bay sushi joint! Friendly service, too!!

Yelp
3.5* (latest visit ) I have been here 2 times now and had very different experiences. The first time ( week night visit) I got the sashimi and scallop salad which was really good. The flavours were crisp and the fish was fresh 9/10. We also tried the nigiri which was very well made. The service was great too 10/10 and I was excited to come back with my friends! I would rate that visit as 4.5*. My second visit was on a Friday night so the place was packed. We got a table and were given the menu's. My take on this - Why do I need to read 4 menu's to order my meal? It was so much work and the page which had the rolls did not have a price on it. I had to call the server and inquire about this and was told that the rolls ranged from $8.95-$14.95. With that ambiguity I ordered a Crunchy roll and an alaskan roll. We also got the Eel on rice for the main. Note - If you order 3 sushi orders you get a miso soup and salad free! The soup and salad came out first and was disappointing. The soup was too salty and the salad lacked enough dressing. 3/10. My sushi came out with one of the rolls falling apart. Now this can happen so I ignored it. But then I saw that my crunch roll was drizzled with a hot sauce !!! It was Sriracha. Now this is a clear sign for me that it is not traditional and that was disappointing. The roll itself was great , fresh fish and well made but the sriracha overpowered the flavour completely 3/10. I cannot remember the roll as a result for its flavour being lost in the spice. The alaskan roll was good and the fish was fresh but it wasn't great 7/10. The Eel was well made but the portion was small and the quantity of rice was not enough as a main dish 8/10. The service was great and that is certainly an important thing to note. However, we ended up paying $65 ( with tip) for 2 people for a meal that I do not want to repeat. I thus left not so happy for my lightly burning mouth nor for my wallet. Unfortunately not a great food night for me.

Yelp
Looking for an authentic Japanese experience? Look no further. This place gives you the omakase experience, where you get a multi-course Japanese meal. They also have the specials of the day, other appetizers, specialties, noodles, dinner options, and a sushi menu. With so many good options to choose from, my husband and I got the Omakase from the Uzen specialties. We didn't know that we could share an omakase dish so we ended up getting omakase A and B. It's definitely a lot of food just for two people. On top of that, we got half an order of oysters and the chawanmushi. Everything was so good. Plus the omakase already comes with the uni sea urchin from Japan and scallop from Japan. It definitely reminded us of Japan's kaiseki meals. And it tasted so good and fresh. It's definitely a bit more pricier than other Japanese restaurants, but for the quality of the food you get, I think it's worth it. Also, plan ahead and make a reservations. It's a really small restaurant so you want to make sure you have reservation instead of having to wait with no guarantee of securing a table. I would totally recommend ordering the omakase just because you get a variety of different dishes as part of one meal. It's very filling and allows you to try different things. We were pleasantly surprised each time a new dish came out. Keep in mind, the restaurant is located on College Ave so parking can be a bit tricky depending on the time that you arrive. We did circle the block at least 4-5 times but got lucky and scored a parking spot not too far away from the restaurant.

Yelp
Since the loss of Yume Sushi in Alameda along Park Street, I have been struggling to find a place to satisfy my occasional omakase urges. Though I like Sushi House in Alameda for its sheer size of place and platters, it is usually a wait and the food...well, its blase. Then I remembered Uzen in Berkeley. I had eaten here before many eons ago but forgot about it due to my busy life. But now it is first and foremost in my head when my stomach asks for SUSHI and SASHIMI!! The owner is a cool and stern Japanese chef who runs this place with an iron....uh knife!?!?! But to customers he is great! Unlike most omakase type places who slowly serve up their nigiri one type of fish at a time....shoot, if the place is not busy, a machine gun barrage of nigiri come at you!! And you thought Jiro only gives you 30 minutes at his subway place in Tokyo....kekeke. And due to Kazu's strict discipline, his servers are also quite on top of things. Have an empty plate? POOF! It's gone! Need more tea? POOF! Your cup is full again! So I can't say more good things about the service. So I'm sure there are others places that are equally good around Oaktown. But I just don't know where they are yet. But until then...I'm going to say, OOOoooo-ZEN!

Yelp
Tried this twice within a month- once for lunch and second time for dinner. Both experiences were awesome and well deserving of a 5 stars rating. Their sashimi is extremely fresh and melts instantly upon my first bite. Im a big fan of soft and warm rice to go with my nigiri, so i feel like thats one thing they can work on. It was still good rice but it wouldve been more complimentary if the rice was softer. I wont ding them on that but anyway! We did not do omakase but instead just ordered a shit load of things we liked and we went to sushi heaven. Really great value and would come again anyday!

Yelp
Disappointed to say the least. Expensive Sashmi that had an icy taste to it. Maybe it was not thawed out properly. One of the worst Short ribs I've had at a Japanese restaurant. Tough beef and lacking that umami flavor. Hamachi roll was average and so was the Unagi for prices that are priced towards upper class sushi but delivers supermarket average quality. No thanks.

Yelp
Life changing omakase last night! Come in, sit at the bar and get the omakase You won't be disappointed! After all these years UZEN is still so good Never disappoints

Yelp
I've been wanting to try Uzen for about 6 months now and finally got the Salmon Teriyaki and Tempura Vegetable Udon to-go for lunch today. As excited as I was based on all the reviews, it was just alright. The salmon dish was overall quite light, I would probably recommend getting an appetizer, as well. The sauce was really good, but beyond that it was pretty basic. The tempura udon was pretty bland and only came with four vegetables to put in it. Overall, it's quite pricy for the amount and quality of food you get.

Yelp
Changing my review as I mixed up this for another sushi place (guess this is why I'm not a pro food reviewer) Hands Down the Worse Japanese Food Place ever. I went here on a weekday night and it was decently full so I thought I would have a good experience. Boy was I wrong. I ordered the Salmon Sashimi and the Pork Katsu. Salmon Sashimi: I got 8 orders of salmon sashimi cause salmon is great, but not at this place. They gave me the worse pieces of sashimi in the world. Normally each order is a piece of salmon but this place packed like 3 of the sh*test cuts of salmon together as each individual order. There was no uniformity to the pieces and like almost 40% of them had like skin on it. I am surprised this place is still in business. Pork Katsu: Very dry and very thin piece of pork katsu. I would not feed it to my dog if I had one as that would be animal cruelty. Uzen please do better.

Yelp
A small modern sushi and udon place located in the Rockridge neighborhood of Oakland. The interior is nice and simple. I had their Uzen Udon - which included chicken, shitake mushrooms, vegetable tempura (shrimp tempura on the side). The udon tasted pretty light and portion was just the right amount for lunch. The service here was pretty friendly and quick. Overall, it was a good experience.

Yelp
I love everything I ordered! Sweet Shrimp/amaebi: so good! Squid: my favorite, love the flavor of the herb inside Uni: good! But it will be better if uni is from Japan Egg: pretty good! Unagi: so soft, totally different from what you get from supermarket Salmon: this is okay, not that special

Yelp
One of my favorite affordable sushi places in the Oakland area. It's really inexpensive for the size of the omakase and the fish is high quality! You won't find any really rare pieces of fish but the ones they do have are excellent. They have two omakase options, one for ~$70 and a deluxe one for ~$90. I got the deluxe omakase but I will probably pick the regular one the next time. Not because the quality of the deluxe was bad (it was very good!) but because I got so much fish from the cheaper option. The chef had mistakenly thought we ordered the cheaper option and told us we were on our last piece and I was happily at a good fullness level. But the server heard and told the chef we got the deluxe omakase, so the chef kept giving us more and more delicious pieces. A pretty great problem to have, but part of me was praying for the end because I was so full. I haven't been back for omakase because of COVID, but I am excitedly waiting for omakase again here once things become a little safer for that style of meal!

Yelp
Understated restaurant with simple terrific food and service. Noodle soups are delicious and sushi fresh and artfully presented. If you're interested in 80 different rolls half of them fried and topped with sauces, don't come here.

Yelp
Very kind staff and really good quality food! They are doing take out only (as are all restaurants right now) and are still really busy so plan ahead for dinner, especially on a Friday night.

Yelp
This is a great little late night spot in Rockridge. It's a small restaurant with only a handful of tables and a sushi bar in the back. I've been here a handful of times when I needed a late night meal on my way home. Since it was past the usual dinner time, it was never crowded. The servers have always been nice, even if not all of them were speedy with their service ; - ) The sashimi and the nigiri are fresh and the rolls are good. They serve a variety of fish as well as many different kinds of rolls.
