Coming from New York City, we’re used to a very high bar when it comes to restaurants—especially Indian food. On our first visit to Cape Town, we were eager to experience an Indian restaurant that reflected the fact that Indians have been part of South African culture for over 200 years. We were fortunate to discover Vadivelu, and it turned out to be exactly what we were hoping for. We weren’t looking for the classic, predictable Indian dishes that appear on almost every menu. Instead, we wanted something more unique—flavorful food that felt distinctly South African while still rooted in Indian tradition. Vadivelu delivered on all fronts.
The service was excellent from start to finish, but the food truly stood out. The dishes were incredibly flavorful yet light (refreshingly not heavy or cream-laden), with thoughtful combinations of Indian spices and clear South African influences. Everything tasted vibrant, intentional, and well balanced.
The owner, a fourth-generation South African of Indian descent, was especially gracious—stopping by multiple times to answer questions, check in on us, and share his passion for what he’s built. It was obvious how much pride he takes in the restaurant, and that pride shows in every detail.
Vadivelu has clearly found a way to distinguish itself in a crowded marketplace, offering food that is tasty, high quality, generously portioned, and remarkably affordable. If you’re looking for Indian food in Cape Town that feels authentic, modern, and deeply connected to South Africa, this is a must-visit. Highly recommended.
