"In the northeast corner of Prospect Park is a divot of land carved out 17,000 years ago by the melting of a glacier. This valley was the perfect type of terrain for Frederick Law Olmsted and Calvert Vaux’s ideal of a naturalistic park, and their original plan for Prospect Park placed a small pool, gardens, and a children’s playground there. The name, granted by Mayor Chapin’s wife, came from a Thomas Moore poem. When the park was redesigned in the 1890s, the pool was replaced with a granite balustrade and a fountain populated by Victoria amazonica, a water lily with pads large enough for children to sit on. The playground just east of it became a rose garden with three fountains. The entire area was populated with rare plants, nearly 20 years before Brooklyn would have its own botanical garden across the street. Unfortunately, the economic struggles of New York at large also meant the decay of the park, and the lily pool became overgrown, the fountains ran dry, and the rare plants were removed as they could not be maintained. Today, the area’s isolated location and decay keep the crowds away, which makes it a popular destination for migrating birds. For the same reason, it also became a cruising area for queer men of color. As of October 2019, the parks department has vowed to restore the area in the next few years, with work already begun on a new entrance just south of the Vale and the nearby Endale Arch closed for renovations." - ATLAS_OBSCURA

The Vale of Kashmir, also known as the Vale of Cashmere, is a secluded area in the northeast corner of Prospect Park in Brooklyn, New York. It was named after a poem by Thomas Moore and designed by Frederick Law Olmsted and Calvert Vaux, the architects of Central Park1. The Vale features a pool and a fountain, surrounded by lush woodlands and rare plants2. It was once a popular destination for children and families, but it fell into decay and neglect over the years3. Recently, the Prospect Park Alliance has vowed to restore the Vale and make it accessible again45.  It is a place of history, beauty, and diversity in the heart of Brooklyn. 🌳

Vale of cashmere is a really nice chill pocket in an overwhelmingly large park. It’s a great place to meet up with flaky people from online dating platforms. If they don’t show up, at least you’re in a beautiful spot. It’s great no matter the season. It still has that special something when we’re deep into the sticks-crispy-winter. When the pond or whatever looks like a mud pit, it’s still good for some reason. Birds like it too

Unbelievable little enclave of the enormous prospect park. While it could use restoration for the pond/wildlife the natural beauty of this area is still prominent and birds frequent the space singing their songs for anybody who chooses to stop and relax on one of the benches

Probably my favorite little nook of prospect park. Needs some TLC, but the dilapidation is almost kind of charming at this point. Worth a visit if you’re in the park. Feels secret and special. Lots of birds and chipmunks!

It is my hope that the vale of cashmere and the pools will be renovated soon! It's kinda rotting away now. When it's fixed, I'll put it back to 5. UPDATE I spoke w park officials. A renovation is planned!!! Likely by summer 25 we will have the pools and much of the infrastructure restored in our beloved Vale of Cashmere.

A lovely mini park within Prospect Park off the beaten path. The old trees are stunning, and beautifully planted around the basin. I wish there’d be better upkeep and more nurturing and caring for this beautiful spot.

Stumbled upon this corner of the park accidentally while riding my bike. There’s only one way in/out without stairs, so if you are relying on wheels of any kind be advised. This is a quiet, secluded spot with a pretty dreamy atmosphere, at least in late summer when everything is green and lush. There is what probably used to be a water feature in the center, surrounded by a paved walk with seats/benches spaced periodically around the outside. It feels a little like someplace out of a fairytale, probably because it’s named “Vale of Cashmere,” and probably also because it’s paved in brick.
