The Essential Restaurants of Covington

"Valencia specializes in paella, the rustic dish rooted in the rice-growing regions along Spain’s Mediterranean coast. Made with short-grained rice and traditionally spiked with proteins like chicken and rabbit, Valencia also offers a Cajun paella that’s a kissing cousin to jambalaya. The menu brings local flavors to the Spanish table, like empanadas stuffed with crawfish and chorizo and a savory duck gumbo served over garlicky mashed plantains." - Beth D'Addono

Valencia was a neat little place in downtown Covington. My wife, daughter and I had been a reservations for 7:30 outside. However they were able to accommodate us at the bar. Which was nice since it was 90° out and steamy. We started off with the octopus tapas plate which was really good. I would highly recommend it. We also had a picture of sangria which we could not finish. We also ordered the paella for two. It was enough for four people. The three of us ate it and had some to take home. And for my wife's birthday dessert, we had the chocolate Peruvian brownie with vanilla ice cream. It was pretty tasty too. The only complaint we had was it was a little loud in the bar area. It was hard to hear each other talk sitting side by side. But we will definitely go back

My husband and had a wonderful evening! Sat outside and it was a nice atmosphere but the chairs were wildly uncomfortable. Our server was friendly but a little on the slow side because they were busy. Besides that, the food was worth the wait and we really didn't mind a leisurely meal on date night :) We would go back to try more things on the menu since there were so many :)

I've been wanting to try Valencia for some time and finally got a chance to check it out for lunch. Didn't have time to try the paella, but I absolutely will be back for it. First, let me say that the service was top notch, Emily was very knowledgeable of the menu and made some fantastic recommendations. She was also extremely attentive without giving the impression of hovering too much. Good service from someone who obviously cares is rare these days and I will be asking to sit in her section on our next visit. I wanted to eat everything because it all looked amazing. I can see it'll take a few visits to work my way through the menu (definitely coming back for that paella). The portion sizes were perfect, not too small or large and everything was reasonably priced. Also, don't pass on the sangria as it's excellent! Not too sweet and just the right amount of fruit flavor. Can't wait to visit again soon. I highly recommend Valencia!

Google
I highly recommend this spot for a truly exceptional dining experience. The restaurant cultivates a unique and vibrant atmosphere that is both fun and sophisticated. From the moment we arrived, the service was impeccable; the staff were incredibly friendly and attentive. The presentation of the appetizers was exquisite, setting a high standard for the rest of the meal, which was equally delicious. Every dish we sampled was prepared with skill and artistry, contributing to a truly memorable evening. I would wholeheartedly recommend this establishment to anyone seeking a high-quality culinary experience in a welcoming and lively environment.

Google
My Sweet JESUS!!! This Burger 🍔 almost made me catch the Holy Ghost!!! I sat outside on one of those red stools. I'm going back for another one of those burgers. After that, I'll try the rest of the menu to see if the other items add up to the delicious quality of the burger. My drink was absolutely on point. Everyone from the hostess, waitress, and management was extremely nice. I am highly recommending VALENCIA!!!

Google
In town for a wedding looking for something that wasnt fried seafood. This place totally overcame all expectations the paella and octopus were both phenomenal. We sat outside on their beautiful deck the service was a little lacking but it was a Friday night and our server was very nice.

Google
Barely got to scratch the surface on my first visit but excited to come back - grilled octopus was amazing!

Google
Been here twice to eat both times were excellent. I had the beef empanadas, goat cheese with sliced bread, skirt steak with small potatoes and a little salad that comes with the dish. If the weather is nice and cool sit outside, it’s more relaxing. Penny was our waitress the second time and she’s outgoing, very nice, gives advice about dishes (knows the food) just all around a great person.

Yelp
One of my favs in Covington. Staff is attentive, knowledgeable and accommodating. Food is best in town.

Yelp
Great ambience, authentic tapas. Plates were larger than we expected, and we actually ended up ordering too much food. Great service, great place for my birthday.

Yelp
One of the best restaurants we've ever gone to, the food was so delicious and the staff was beyond the best, everyone made us feel like we were one of the regulars, I just hope we get a chance to get back to the area so we can visit again.

Yelp
It's ok. I have had food like this before in the south shore on st Charles, I forgot the name, so naturally coming here I had the same expectations.... I got the grilled octopus and it was too charred and rubbery for my liking. I had this dish before in another restaurant and it was better than Valencia. The area Valencia is in is very nice.

Yelp
The service, ambiance and drinks were excellent. I came for a girls dinner and Valencia was the perfect setting. If making a reservation, I recommend patio seating as they often have live music making the dining experience that much more special. The food, albeit good, was not traditionally Spanish and tasted more like Latin meals made in Colombia or Central America/Latin America. It was not what I was expecting at a Spanish restaurant at all.

Yelp
Extremely impressed with this restaurant. The atmosphere is cozy and even a little romantic, making for a great date night spot. Everything we ordered was authentic and extremely good.

Yelp
Recommend....? Holy Moly this place is awesome! The detail in the ingredients is second to none. Every dish we ordered was perfectly created and quality over quantity. I recommend 110% and hope this place becomes an institution in Old Covington. Stacy was awesome and the vibes here are positive with so much energy.

Yelp
The food was amazing! We had a family meal over the thanksgiving break, and the server (Josh), the manager (Bryan) and the owner (Efrain) made us all feel at home. The ambiance was cool: a clean modern decor with some traditional Spaniard accents; jazzy type music - not too loud; and perfect lighting that gave our evening a superb experience. We will return as there are many dishes we didn't get to try, and prices are reasonable enough that we can frequent them without worrying about a high bill.

Yelp
I've been wanting to visit Valencia for a while, and it didn't disappoint! Date night was lovely thanks to great ambiance, it was about a half full restaurant but was not too loud; modest and cozy decor that made you feel comfortable but not over the top. Our server Raven was pretty busy, but she made sure we were taken care of. Drinks were a bit pricy, but the Margarita was delicious and my date enjoyed two El Jefe whisky drinks. We ordered four tapas, squid, pork belly, goat cheese and meatballs. While I wish the portions were a tad bigger, we left satiated for two and not over stuffed. Everything was very nice and I will be back.

Yelp
DEFINITELY the most authentic tapas restaurant on the Northshore!!! The food was so ON POINT. We had the Warm goat cheese with honey and orange marmalade with some pistachios and some Crostini, the the manager, Brain, who ROCKS, let us try some of the Fabada and the Mofongo (Puerto Rican) in the duck gumbo. We also had the Patas Bravas and we shared the vegetarian paella. Folks, let me tell you, R U N don't walk to this restaurant, it's authentic as tapas gets!!! Plus, Brian mentioned they would be adding g 15 more tapas to the menu. I will officially be moving into Valencia very soon!!!

Yelp
I'm reading all these wonderful reviews so it must mean we need to give this place another try. We went for lunch one day and I do agree the manager and waitstaff all very nice. Our water came and I picked up glass to drink and detected an unusual smell. Thinking it was the glass I tried it and it had a chemical taste. I told our waiter and was told she didn't smell anything and she in turn asked the bartender who agreed with her assessment. We then ordered Diet Coke which also tasted strange. On to the food...I ordered the hamburger and it was dry and tasteless my husband got the shrimp tapas which was served with crostini's which I assume were to soak up sauce from shrimp. No sauce shrimp were also dry and tasteless. The one plus was the flan it was authentic and delicious. We did say we'd like to try the paella so we'll defer to the others who gave such glowing reviews.

Yelp
Beautiful restaurant with great ambience and great food. Our service was fantastic. If you haven't tried this place and you are in the covington area, you should definitely put Valencia at the top of your list.

Yelp
2nd time here for lunch and they have updated their menu to now include paella!!! Woohoo!! The menu was much better today than it was before - last menu was a little generic, but new lunch menu was fantastic! Paella Valenciana, beef short rib sliders, burger, flan, & churros we're ALL amazing!!! Best burger IMO I've tasted in a long time!!

Yelp
On Tuesday evening my family and I had the pleasure to try Valencia Restaurant in Covington and oh my what a treat! I had heard it was owned by the same family who owns Empa Taco which is our favorite spot in Madisonville so I couldn't wait to celebrate my birthday at Valencia Restaurant. When we arrived we were greeted by the hostess and the manager. We did not have a reservation, which was not a issue and they asked if we preferred inside or outside dining. I said I'd love to be outside but there are no tables open and the manager said give me one minute. When then watched him rearrange some 2 tops to make a larger table and set us up nicely on their front deck. Our server Christopher was quick to stop by, fill our water glasses and introduce us to the menu. He explained because the meal is all made fresh it is their preference to take the entire order at once and explained the paella (which is why I was there) could take 30-40 minutes to prepare. (Having eaten Spanish food around the country I was well aware good paella typically takes that long). To start we decided to have their red sangria and it was sooo good, the fruit in it was fresh and yummy. For our meal we decided to have the Creamy Goat Cheese & Pork Belly Bites. Keep in mind I had my children with me (11 & 13) who are typically picky eaters and I ended up having to fight the kids for the pork bellies which have an amazing sauce on them and beg my wife to share the creamy goat cheese with me. The orange marmalade on the goat cheese was to die for! After we finished our appetizers our server Christopher kept our glasses full and made sure to check on us while we enjoyed the ambiance of their front deck while awaiting our paella! I would say Christopher or the manager would come by at least every 5 minutes to check in and provide an update on the progress of our entrees. We waited maybe 10 minutes between courses but that wasn't a surprise as they told us from the moment we sat that the paella was made fresh and would take some time. Yall..... it was soooooo worth the wait! For our main entrées we ordered the Charred Grilled Spanish Octopus, the Paella Valencia for 2 and of course some chicken nuggets off the kids menu. The octopus came with 4 large pieces of meat and was served over a grilled pineapple with capers and bed of grilled potatoes with a great sauce. Everyone at the table enjoyed this dish and my wife, who doesn't typically finish a plate made sure not to leave anything on this one. But people, the Paella Valencia was the start of the show! It was cooked to perfection and every bite was scrumptious. The pan was filled with large shrimp, sausage, chicken, prawns, calamari, mussels, & andouille! Even my children enjoyed this dish because they were able to pull out the meats they enjoy and just avoid things like mussels. As much as I wanted to eat the entire pan, last night I was very happy to enjoy this paella as leftovers and it rewarmed just a good! Overall, I would say: Atmosphere = A+ Service = A+ Food = A++ Would I return and dine here again? Hell I texted a group of 10 people on the way home saying we MUST all come here because it was so good! ***I did not think to take photos, I borrowed these from other reviews to show some of what we had.

Yelp
The food was amazing!!! Service was top notch and a visit from chef Stephanie to our table was awesome! The Valencia Paella was the best paella I've ever had. My friends didn't care for the mussels which was great because there was more for me We also had a pitcher of the red sangria which paired well with everything we ate. We all left with our tummies very happy and had leftover paella for the next day. If you love paella please visit Valencia you won't be disappointed!!!

Yelp
Great Spanish tapas on Northshore. Live music was relaxing and enjoyable! Staff was pleasant. Will go back.

Yelp
I've tried their dinner and lunch menus and neither disappoint! Great variety with friendly staff and the food is amazing!

Yelp
Beware of the price on the Paella Valencia. In large print, it says $31.00. We just dined there for lunch today and the server told us it was a dish that could only be ordered for 2 or 4 people. So we said that was fine because we both wanted it for lunch. We were going to share it. Not once did the server say that the price of $31 would be DOUBLED for 2 people. We were in shock when the bill showed $62. If you can't order a single order of paella, then don't put a single order price on the menu! The prices should show paella for 2...$62 and paella for 4....$124. BE HONEST, FOLKS! Have some integrity. WE GOT DUPED ONCE. We will not eat there again. The manager said "the server tried to explain it to you," but obviously he dIdn't. My partner and I have dined in fine dining restaurants all over the world and have never experienced this.

kyle w.

Yelp
We have eaten here before and the Seafood Paella was excellent for $68 for 2, a bit pricey! We went back Saturday and one of us has a Gluten algae, so the food choices are limited. We tried the Cajun Paella, shown on the menu for $16, but it is for 2 and the price x2 =$32. I really wanted a hamburger, but they wont serve a Paella portion for 1, although the menu quotes a price for 1. Once the Paella came out, it was so spicy we both struggled to try to eat it. We told both the waitress and bartender, but no one seemed to care. Bottom line is we spent @$100 for a dinner we couldn't eat( note this included 3 drinks ). Since we had to pay for the Paella we brought it home and tried to add rice and vegetables, but it got hotter. Drinks are good and the atmosphere is pleasant, but the food and menu is overpriced and misleading. We probable wont go back.

Ivan B.

Yelp
Valencia never disappoints! From the food, drinks and staff, it's simply top tier! It's my go to place when I'm in town.

Yelp
Food and service were great. Make sure you have reservations for Friday and Saturday nights. I think the patio will be great atmosphere when the weather gets cooler.

Patti S.

Yelp
The food, the service, the ambiance- all so perfect. So glad I looked out of my window of the Southern Hotel and saw this little spot across the street.

Yelp
My first visit to Valencia was a standout, a truly perfect dining experience. Our party of three of ordered three of the tapas plates and a salad. All were delicious and just the right amount of food. Our waitress was outstanding; attentive, personable, knowledgeable and efficient. The dining room was very comfortable and we were actually able to carry on a conversation and hear each other. Ican't wait to go back.

Yelp
We've been here a few times now and haven't had something we didn't love. We've ordered the Valencia Burger, the Cubano, the Jazzy Chicken Panini, the Duck Grilled Cheese & the Patatas Bravas. Everything from the service, to the atmosphere, to the food has been nothing short of fantastic. We will continue to come back.

Kristi L.

Yelp
Very pleased with our first experience here. We did tapas, and it was all very good. My favorite were the Spanish meatballs (a special) and the ceviche. The whipped goat cheese is also a must. The flan was the best I've had anywhere. And very nice service for a busy Saturday evening. We will be back soon.

Yelp
A friend and I went to lunch yesterday. We started with the pork belly. It was delicious. I had the smoked chicken panini, the flavors were awesome, just the right amount of spice. The lemon vinaigrette dressing was awesome on the side salad. My friend had the cubano, also fantastic. The bread was perfectly crispy too! Definitely give it a go, the patio is beautiful too, gonna be even better in the cooler fall weather.

Monique L.

Yelp
We went tonight and it was ok Service very good . Not a big selection of entrées. Don't think will be back there's betters places to eat.

Yelp
The paella Valencia, pork belly, and flan were all amazing. The staff was top notch as well.

Yelp
My wife and I visited for the first time and were blown away by the level of service provided by our server, as well as the manager. The atmosphere is relaxing. The drinks were wonderful. And best of all the food was nothing less than perfection. We cannot speak highly enough and will be making this a consistent date night locations :-)

Jourdan W.

Yelp
We have been wanting to try Valencia and finally did for a random date night. We got the Carajita and El Jefe to drink and got a bunch of tapas to eat. Gambas al Ajillo, creamy goat cheese, Valencia roll, Panceta and the beef empanadas. Everything was 10/10. Sooooooooo so good. We can't wait to go back and eat outside in spring!
google avatar

Barry W.

Yelp
I have spent a lot of time in Spain. This restaurant is the real deal. Absolutely amazing. Food is very healthy and flavorful. Service is so friendly.

Sean C.

Yelp
The food was good. Especially the chargrilled octopus. Empanadas were great. Recommend removing the carrots from the paella valenciana as it was a bit too busy and the carrots didn't add to the dish. Great service and good wine. Flan and churros were fantastic
google avatar

Yelp
Incredible food. There's lots of great food in Covington, but Valencia delivers consistent perfection every time. Very unique delicious meals. #1 burger in Covington as well. Very pleased.

Chad G.

Yelp
This was an amazing restaurant. I've been to hundreds of New Orleans restaurants over the years and on the North Shore...this by far top shelf, excellent service and most importantly delicious food. If you want to have a duck grilled cheese sandwich like you've never had before... then you gotta come try this place out!!!

Peter P.

Yelp
We had an amazing evening at Valencia. The food and the ambience were great and the staff was eager to accommodate.

Goku Z.

Yelp
Pretty nice with it. Huge patio. Can't go wrong with paella, sangria, and tapas. Very welcome addition to the restaurants in downtown Covington, hope they stay around

Shelby S.

Yelp
We have been to Valencia twice and the first experience was much better than our most recent visit. The first time we went on a Wednesday and maybe because it was earlier in the week, it was very quiet and an enjoyable experience and the waitress we had was awesome, she made suggestions for what to get and her suggestions were great. The paella was good. We tried it again on a Friday night and it was not great. The paella was ok, but nothing like the first time we had it. Our waiter was a little bit scattered and all over the place and the worst part was the noise. We were seated at a two person table not too far from the bar and it was SO LOUD! It was early, so it wasn't like people had been bellied up to the bar all night. It was 5 pm... people were literally yelling to the point that we almost got up and left. There were people also congregating near the bar so you could not talk to the person you were eating with because of the noise from the large amount of people near the bar. It was truly miserable. After paying over $100 for dinner and leaving with a migraine from the noise, we will not be back.

Casey R.

Yelp
Weird just weird. No soul to the place very cold. Bar sucks because the bartenders are the waiters running around making the drinks for their tables too. Yes great Paella which is Spanish jambalaya let's be honest for $50 for one serving two. Enjoy!

Ron B.

Yelp
Went with friends for one of their birthday. Ordered a Cajun rice dish for 2 and the chicken in the dish was old and reheated. Won't be going back!!

Hayden I.

Yelp
Giving an extra star because they were able to fry up an egg roll appetizer. Couldn't pay me to try their entrees again. Tastes like fish bile. Would not recommend to anyone

Randy E.

Yelp
Had a nice birthday lunch with my wife. We split a tapas plate and salad. Our server was McKinsey and she paired the wines up perfectly. The tapas plate was the Boguefalaya Roll. Two rolls cut in 4 pieces with a spicy dipping sauce. It was delicious. The Valencia salad had a zingy dressing which made it interesting. Highly recommend both. We sat outside to enjoy the nice weather today.

Shipping P.

Yelp
Exceptional! Great job on renovating the building. The food was amazing! I can't wait to try everything on the menu.

David R.

Yelp
My wife and I decided to give this place a try. I will start by saying if you just want tapas it is pretty good. We had the pork belly bites and avacodo rolls and a nice bottle of wine. As for dinner we were disappointed. We ordered the Valencia burger and it was overcooked and dry - not the 1/2 pound juicy burger I was looking forward to. Also had the grilled octopus which was okay. Better choices in town for dinner.

BriCath K.

Yelp
Saturday night was our first visit to Valencia. We made the reservation early in the week. We were asked if we wanted a table inside or outside. The person taking our reservation suggested outside, and they would move us inside if the weather did not cooperate, so we agreed on that. On arrivial the weather was wet and cool, so we asked to switch to inside, but we were told that was not an option, so we agreed to take a table outside. After sitting down, Brian, the Manager came out and apologized. That was first class and we elected to stay for dinner dispite the conditions were not ideal. Their policy is that you need to order your entire meal at once (re: Tapas and entre) which I personally do not like given when it is your first time at a restaurant, it is hard for us to gauge how filling the first courses will be. I find I may wish to change my main course based on the starter. I assume one of the reasons for having to order everything at once is that the paelle takes 20 to 30 minutes, and if you wait, then you are tying up the table that much longer. The wine selection is very limited, but we ordered a nice red and ordered the Bogafalaya roll tapas and the avocado roll tapas as starters and the cajun paelle for two as our main. The deep fried tapas rolls were nice and tasty, and both rolls came with a separate sauce. The cajun paelle was a good size portion and it was very good. The ingrediences were fresh, it was cooked very well and the protein and veggies were moist and not over-done (as they can be in some paelle). The service was fine. The manager checked on us again (during the rain) and offered to comp us for one of the tapas starters due to the mix up. That was nice, and he was a pleasure to talk to. Overall, given they have only been open for a couple of months, the food was very good, and we will try it again.
