There Are 10,000 People Waiting for These Filipino Doughnuts. That's No Surprise. | Bon Appétit

"Since its founding in 1979, Valerio's City Bakery has grown into a mini-chain with four locations in California, all doling out hot pandesal and white loaves swirled with ube, cheese, or mongo (red mung bean)." - ByJasmine Ting

Valerio's is pure soul. I do not know how authentic it is to a true Filipino bakery and comfort food but all I can tell you is that the owners are genuine and feel like family. Both from the outwards facade and the interior, it is a run-down family joint. But the incessant local Filipino customer-base that comes by to get their bags of baked goods as well as hot food indicates that it is a locally loved establishment. There's no menu. You peek over the glass counter and see what they have. Point your fingers to tasty noodles, beef, whatever else that looks good and no matter what you order, you get it at a cheap price with total comfort food taste. You're not going to be hungry. And you're going to be sucking your fingers asking for more. Pretty much everything is good and can be felt that they're made with love. Make sure you get a stick or two of the Turons (fried banana sticks). The Turons are simply out of this world and that is an understatement. The bags of freshly baked bread was still warm at 11 am. Pan de Sal, Pan de Coco, etc. all are done in a Filipino way - inheriting from the Portuguese / Spanish history but also mixing the local ingredients like coconut, pineapple, and bananas. It's also quite different from the Hawaiian style of bread. Valerio's is a local jewel, dishing out love and warmth. It is worthy to drive all the way to San Jose just for this. And we'll be back.

Best palabok and Tagalog posters everywhere I feel like I’m in PH

Google
we come here to buy their adobo and igado but recently they have stopped cooking these. you wonder why they dont serve these when it is almost always sold out. And when you call, their servers/employees lack the courtesy and enthusiasm of service… napaka-masungit ng mga ale. when you go there in person, there’s a couple who are real sweethearts but then if you win the draw, you get to be served by the masungits!! to the owners of this establishment… pagsabihan nyo nga yang mga masusungit nyo na servers!!

Poor customer service! Very very poor! Unfriendly staff... i was expecting a jolly and entertaining face since that's how Filipinos are, but the lady in the front couldn't paint her frowny face! I asked for fresh pandesal and she arrogantly answered me that they don't have. She's rude! She should work at the back without customer interaction! I hope when I go back there, if i will comeback after today... i hope she's not there anymore! I only heard from others about this lady but today I met her. My mistake i didn't get her name. You are ruining the business!

Super disappointed in how I was treated here. My husband and I were craving turons/banana egg rolls. Upon walking in, the two women working there looked at us up and down (I’m assuming to see if we were Filipino, which we’re not). I waited behind someone else that just bought something. When she finished, I walked up and asked if there were any turon/banana egg rolls left. The woman at the counter said that there’s no more, quietly, so I said “huh?” And she said “no more” and looked away. I asked her if there would be more tomorrow and she said “don’t know.” Again, she said it quietly and looked away. So I wanted to make sure I heard her right, because we wanted to come back tomorrow to buy some and I was hoping to find out the time they would have them. So I said “you don’t know?” And she said “don’t know.” There was no one else waiting in line, so they weren’t even busy at the time or anything… Needless to say, we will never return and will not ever recommend this place ever again. We bought 50 turons for a party just last week, too. So bummed that we supported them with this type of service we received today… And for anyone else that is looking for turon, we were so excited to find that Gabrielle’s Food Market across the street also sells them and they’re just as good, with much better service.

Google
Incredibly delicious! We are obsessed with the chicken empanadas. We have to stop every time we are in the area.

When i am in North San Jose I always make a visit here for lunch. Prices are reasonable for lunch and the food is fresh, tasty and hot.

Google
Great Filipino food and reasonable prices. I don’t cook, I just come here and ordered for lunch and dinner. Lately, their foods especially menudo and igado are too salty. Not sure if they changed their cook 🧑‍🍳 ☹️

Yelp
Wonderful Filipino bakery that is now under new management. They have since spruced up the place a bit. As for items sold, I enjoy their empanada (quite filling!), suman and sapin sapin. They have lots of breads too but packages are too much for two people to finish. Conveniently located next to the Filipino grocery store and Red Ribbon.

Yelp
I stopped in here a couple of times. Once, I tried their pancit (Filipino Noodles). I thought they were ok. Ensaymada - sweet and savory bun. It tasted fresh to me. Service: The service is friendly. They explained what they have or what's popular.

Yelp
Valerio's is a solid Filipino bakery. There are walls and walls of Fresh made in store filipino breads. The selection is solid!! There are also MANY various Filipino treats and desserts- Karioka (IFYKY), Chocolate Crinkle cookies, Ube Crinkle Cookies, Leche Flan, just to name a few. I was there this past Saturday and there was a solid line in the store, but 2 cashiers help keep things moving along quickly and efficiently. Being a Saturday, i had the pleasure of watching one of the workers bagging flesh out of the oven pan de sal right into the bag. It was stacks and stacks of bread. It looked awesome and smelled ever better. Parking can get crazy here, so be mindful (I suggest parking past Valerio). They take cash or card.

Yelp
I came back to try their food again and Giza was the lady who served me, she was really nice and consistent. She deserves a raise. I'll only go if she's there. The food is mediocre.

Diego C.

Yelp
This place is good. Their bread are my favorites. However some of the people that work there are not as nice, they act kinda rude, never say hi or thank you, they only talk between them or people that they already know. The place its a bakery, looks fine

Yelp
**Review based strictly on VCB's Turon** We stopped by Valerio's City Bakery since my family was having a gathering. Since this bakery is known for having delicious turon [crispy Filipino banana lumpia with caramel] I couldn't think of a better opportunity to give it a try. These babies are high in demand and although there may be a potential wait, DO IT!! This dessert is long in size and the taste is balanced by the not so overly sweet banana found in the center and the sweet syrupy drizzle found on the outer skin. The highlight of this purchase: they stay crispy for hours on end!!!!! 3 stars overall because the business could be a lot warmer and more welcoming to patrons. CASH ONLY so come well prepared.

Geoffrey A.

Yelp
Called over the phone to see when turon would be available and they said they didn't have pick-ups, but they opened at 8am. I came in at 8am and they told me to come back later at 11am. They should have communicated better over the phone to improve their customer service and avoid angry customers. Their food is okay at best.

Yelp
Haven't been here in six years though I usually go to the one in Milpitas instead and they have a large selection of baked goods and better service. Came by this morning as usual it's not well stock limited selection but I can smell the baked goods. I chose the freshly bake Spanish breads or commonly known as Senorita bread price at $1.50 each and damn they were simply delicious sweet. My second choice would be the mocha rolls had them before simply delicious. Customer service is very slow depending time a day if so take a number and wait and there's always a long line and busy as hell. Fortunately I came in early in the morning with so few customers. They do prepared a lot of Filipino take-outs such as pancit, palabok, menudo and turon though I really don't care much for that with the exception of lumpia (spring rolls) and baked breads ube pandesal and Spanish breads are my favorites. There's ample parking though it's best to come by early in the morning rather than later in the day. Won't be coming back anytime soon maybe once in the blue moon. By the way the hours here are shorter than the one in Milpitas and they are opened seven days a week from 6 to 6.

Yelp
Best pastry and bread specially ( pan de sal) delicious, little far but it was worth it .

Xyline C.

Yelp
I only come here for the palabok and other few things but damn some of the staff are rude as hell. I went this morning and I waited for my number to be called, the lady that assisted me asked me what did I want, I said if I can order Palabok. She rudely asked me "HUH, What?" (Like lady you could clearly hear me) "Well did you order already?" . Which I was extremely confused why are you asking me if I already ordered when it's obviously I'm in line to ORDER something at that present moment, like girl what? Make it make sense. I bluntly told her "UH NO, that is why I am ordering it with you now -____- " . I was so damn pissed, when I arrived home I didn't realize that she PACKED THE WRONG ITEM and gave me Pancit instead of the Palabok I asked for. This literally set me off cause hell no. I will not continue to support a business that keeps allowing their staff to get away with bad customer service.

Yelp
This is the OG Valerio's which I always came to when I was growing up. I haven't come here in a couple years, so the few times I decided to swing by, they were closed for the day. I realized they are closed on Mondays after I drove there. Also they are not well stocked on some items like ube pandesal. One thing about thing about this location is that they serve hot food in addition to some bakery items. Unlike the Valerio's in Milpitas, which is primarily bakery.

Yelp
Good authentic filipino food. My go to for filipino take out on the weekends. Would recommend to anyone.

Yelp
fresh bread everyday, good customer service, food is amazingly delicious. quality of bread and food is still the same since day one

Yelp
Took my mother to try this place on a whim in high school and my sister has spent the past decade or so complaining that I never took her. Finally got the chance during this COVID lockdown: Rating Breakdown: 2/2 Stars for Taste -- We definitely had to try the cheese puffs and the pan de ube. The cheese puffs were delightfully fluffy with a dab of cream cheese in the middle. It was hard to resist cramming the whole salty-sweet package into my mouth. The pan de ube was also soft and chewy, the yam paste wasn't too sweet. We went around lunch time so we ordered some pancit palabok and arroz caldo too. SO glad we did because now we have a new local place to go when that caldo craving comes around. Also the shrimpy umami taste of pancit palabok might not be for everyone, but give me them creamy, funky noodles any day of the week! 1/1 Stars for Value -- I think it was $3.50 for a bag of 6 pan de ube and $.65 for each cheese ball. A medium serving of pancit was around $7 and small arroz caldo was $5. Spent less than $20 for a small lunch/snack for 2-3 people. 1/1 Stars for Customer Service -- The employees here take social distancing seriously and only allow 3 customers in the small serving area at once. This can cause somewhat of a long wait, but definitely worth it! Bonus star because I would definitely come back to try all their other pastries. I have my eye on that ube pan de sal!

Yelp
So a lot has changed since shelter in place. There is no longer the friendly auntie at the cashier/counter. In its place are the plastic shield type things. The lady no longer greets you upon entering Clueless as to what to order, I ordered the pansit noodles as indicated on the sign in front of the store Clueless as I was, i dug deep and gave the lady my order She seemed polite not very friendly but acceptable Nonetheless, food is good so no complaints there Will be back if there are less people in line hopefully after shelter in place time in the future?

Yelp
The palabok is the bomb! Usually we get this for party trays. They have a lot of bread selections as well but my favorite is the cheese since they use kesong puti. Super yummy!!! They also sell Banana fritters and empanadas. Legit Filipino bakery.

Perla J.

Yelp
Food is okay. Sometimes you can find Filipino dishes that you miss eating. Service is not always good. There are times when this woman who handles food and cash register is rude when not in the mood. She is selective also of customers whom she will give good customer service. Like today, she was rude to us. When a male customer came in, who obviously, a regular because she knows the first name, she changed mood. From rude to sweet. The store has a small space to cater to customers especially on Sundays. They also offer dine-in so it is crowded.

Yelp
A "mom and pop" type shop located in the plaza shared with CVS and Safeway. They sell hot foods like sinigang, pancit, empanadas, siopao, turon to baked goods like ube bread, pan de sal, mamon, and ensaymada. Came here for baked goods and grabbed two bags of ube bread, 1 container of mamon Tostado, 3 cheese mamon, 4 pieces of ensaymada for about $20. The ube bread is my fave, same texture and density of a dinner roll with ube halaya in the middle that isn't too sweet. I try to ask the cashier for items because usually, they'll grab the freshly baked items out to you if they have it. Be cautious with some of the baked goods out on the shelves, maybe a day or two old so try to get the freshest possible! The baked goods here are good from what I've tried, especially the ube bread and turon and are hard to find elsewhere. Service is an afterthought as it is that, grab-and-go kind of style here. Also if you get here too late in the day, they will sell out of most items both baked goods and hot food items. Cash only!

Yelp
Yikes. Probably the worst polabok I've had, or maybe this spot just has a different recipe than I'm used to but it was watery and fishy tasting. I'm used to a more savory thick consistency. Not for me. There was also a hair in the pork adobo, which to their credit was much tastier but after I saw that, I couldn't eat any more. Bummer all around.

Niron T.

Yelp
Came here for the banana eggrolls with my wife, the person here was so rude even though there is no customer waiting. We traveled 1.5 here for the turon. We even asked if they'll have it the next day, and the lady just said "I don't know." Would not recommend.
google avatar

Thy T.

Yelp
Closed the store 15 mins before the closing time. Called and asked why and the lady said she didn't know how to operate the cash register? I drove all the way here and I even called before I come. It was Waste of my time and bad customer service
google avatar

Tara A.

Yelp
1. Get a number and wait for it to be called. 2. The combo is a good meal - 2 items plus rice. This makes a good breakfast - 2 big scoops of white rice and loganisa and the omlette. 3. Get a dessert - try the ice candy. I liked coconut. 4. Get snacks to bring home or more food for later. I had pancit, pork siopao, and pineapple cake to go. So not keto, but I was craving filipino food since we haven't had a family party. Enjoy!
google avatar

Esther L.

Yelp
Don't go there after 11:30am for working hours lunch. They are super slow and inefficient. Waited for 30 minutes just for something pre-made to order. Need to remind myself again.

Yelp
Love the Turons, always get the Turons. :) Came to this store based on family and friends recommendations. I've tried the Pan De Sal or Pandesal, as some people call it. I've also had the Ube Bread, not a fan of either of those products. The texture is a bit weird to me, but then again everyone's taste preferences are different. Perhaps I'm just not a fan of yams lol. :) My personal favorite item are the Turons, which are really delishy. I don't come here often, since I don't find myself in this part of town regularly, but if or when I am in the area for errands, I will stop by and get the Turons and only the Turons. The Turons can be frozen (perhaps not recommended) but I do it all the time. I freeze them and then pop them in the AirFryer machine at home for re-heating, when I want to have a snack, super yummy!

Charlene T.

Yelp
The turons here are always good but placing an order with them is impossible. I've tried calling many times to place an order and they don't pick up. If they do pick up they always say they don't have bananas. They will also tell you if you want turons it's first come first serve and won't tell you a time or what day they have it. How can I be first come and first serve when I wanna place a big order? Make it make sense. People who pick up the phone are always rude and rush the call.
google avatar

Dynaton T.

Yelp
Very long lines but the turon are worth the wait. Super crispy skin drizzled with their homemade syrup. The plantains are nice and fluffy. I ordered about 30 for a family party and it only came out to around 20 bucks, 66 cents/ea. Cash only so make sure you have it but if not theres a Wells Fargo next door. Theres also hot filipino food ready and i saw people come in for lunch while i was in line. Definitely be coming here again.
google avatar

Yelp
It has been a while since I've been here until recently and things have changed. In case it's your first time, make sure to get a number even if there's only one customer inside the bakery. The empanadas used to be filled with a lot of meat, but now it's filled with less and they cost $1.99 each. I got the beef empanada and chicken empanada. In my opinion, the chicken one tastes better. If you plan on ordering a huge amount for a party, be sure to call in and place an order so they have it ready for you. I recently got an order or empanadas that cost about $40 and when I asked for a small box, they were trying to charge me $0.25. Not sure if I'll come back here again.

Yelp
3.5* but rounding up to 4* bc service was great. Many reviews complain about the customer service, but I had great service.. the woman who helped me was really nice and prompt. She even suggested I move to a small tray for the seafood noodles. I got the ube bread and the ube chinese pastry as well.. and then I threw in the fried banana eggroll. I clearly can't recall the name of anything I ordered at the moment lol. The seafood noodle thing was pretty good. The banana thing was yummy (as usual), but more oily than other places I've had it. What fell short for me is what they're known for: their ube treats! I wanted to LOVE these pastries, but oh well :/
google avatar

Maureen M.

Yelp
Love this place! Once you walk in to the store, first thing is you need to grab a ticket, (nice system for a small place so people wont have cat fights about who's first) then wait to be called. Some items are not ready everyday, since they are freshly home cooked. Like turon for example, they only available from Thursday-Sunday, and make sure you call first to submit your order. Otherwise there's a chance you might get out of stock since their turon is that good. Also tried the cheese ball and sweet bread. Cheese ball basically sweet bread with cream cheese inside. While sweet bread is bread with condensed milk inside mixed with the ingredient. Also bought the lunch tray, tried their longalisa (sausage), pancit, bitter melon, and pork adobo. Everything is well seasoned, and I must say, I shall return for their turon!
google avatar

Andrea F.

Yelp
Very rude customer service. Whoever that girl was that answers the phone She just hanged up on me!
google avatar

Kat N.

Yelp
This review is based solely off of their turons! I looooveeee fried banana! Theirs seems like they have something glazed over it, which makes it amazing. Its so addictive. I call ahead to order when i place large orders for get togethers or company parties. I was told they only accept cash, but i noticed they take card now! You have to spend over a certain amount though. Seems like they had a lot of other baked goods as well, which im eager to try soon. Also a little deli of filipino food!
google avatar

Cathy J.

Yelp
Child Labor! Seriously? I parked my car in front of the store during closing hours to eat my snacks I got from Cvs and I saw a 11-14 year olds sweeping and moping. They looked very tired and stressed!! This was a while back.
google avatar

LuLu Q.

Yelp
Picked up a few bakery goods. Not too much of a selection left since I came in after 1. Place smelled delicious of bread and different Filipino entrees.
google avatar

Yelp
I bring my pinoy here every time he comes to visit. Thanks to him, my kids are now hooked to enseymadas, so I find myself coming here on the regular. $1 for a two pack is not a bad deal for those sweet, fluffy, fresh pillows of heaven. The pan de sal is always fresh, and you have a choice of purchasing it packaged or single serve in a paper bag for immediate consumption. They have a solid selection of different Filipino sweet treats, as well as delicious hot food items. You just grab a number, and place your order. The bakery can accomodate small parties to dine in, but larger parties definitely want to take their yummies to go. They have a good sized catering menu, which is awesome for parties when you don't feel like cooking. The food is always fresh, and service is always with a smile. Cash ONLY! :)

Terri M.

Yelp
Make sure you get a number when you walk in......... This place is always crazy busy. I have been trying to find pancit and it seems that no one does Philipino food. But when I found this place I was so glad to finally have pancit! Nothing ever compares to authentic pancit from Philippines. That is what I miss most from being overseas.... the food. My favorite things are the sweet rolls which remind me of Hawaiian bread. Also the cream cheese muffin. It is sweet bread with a chunk of cream cheese in the middle. I would say pass on the empanadas, but the pancit was very tasty.

Yelp
Cash only *sad face* I walked in here w/ a $5 bill on me because I left the house w/ the intention to get a banh gio (my all-time favorite Vietnamese snack in the entire universe) as well as a banh mi xiu mai however, I thought to myself... I already knocked off 2 bookmarks; one on Friday and one on Saturday, I might as well knock out another one before my diet starts. Yes, I'm a total carnivore, chocoholic, and carbi-vore but I need to slim down in order to look fabulous for Vegas. I have to be honest. I have never tried Filipino food. I mean I've had lumpia before and I had pancit at a pot luck last year but to go to an actual Filipino establishment was never the case w/ me. This place is right next to Jade China *hearts* I freaking love Jade China. Anyhow, parking is a pain in the ass because this plaza is always packed. When I walked in, I saw the cash only sign and was immediately disappointed. Thinking to myself, I was trying to see what I can get for $5 but the lady must have seen the way I looked at the pancit... she said, "For you, $5 is OK" so I watched in awe as she PACKED that to-go box like I have never seen it packed like that before. I was stoked! I handed her the $5 bill and pretty much thanked her a million times before I retreated to my car. I rushed home and before I dug into it, I took a picture of it to upload it onto Yelp which then linked it to my FB. Whilst on the phone w/ my babe.. I took a gigantic forkful of the somewhat greasy vermicelli (or noodles), the crispy (not soggy) cabbage, the tender chicken.. an overall heaping of fat, calories, and grease... I had no remorse. Absolutely NONE. Would I go back? You best believe it and I'll make sure next time to carry a $10. So today is the start of my lacto-ovo diet and no fried foods, no sugar, and do diet sodas =(

Yelp
Best pastries, but you have to go early to get all the fresh goodies coming out of the oven.

Noelle J.

Yelp
The World According to Noelle Allergic Girl's Guide to Life Valerio's City Bakery is a great place for Filipino food & baked goodies. I've been coming here for years. The hubby and I came here recently in search of 'cheese balls' that our friend Walter P. has been raving about for awhile. The cheese balls are a soft bread filled with cream cheese- the top of the cheese ball has a sweet glaze and the combination of everything serves as a sweet treat for an afternoon snack :) So we picked up: cheese balls, pandasal and bistek. The bistek (marinated beef w/onions) was really delicious. The downside of this bakery is how crowded it can be at time and its such a small space. The upside is they have a machine where you can pull a number and get customer service when your number is called so there is no confusion about who is next. Definitely will be back for the bistek- oh so good!!! Noelle's Notes CASH ONLY!

Yelp
1 star good serve 1 star some traditional filipino food 1 star tons of bake good to choose from

Olivia B.

Yelp
Their customer service is lackluster and they're rude. They don't greet you when you come in and they don't say thank you even you're the only customer in their store. It's just sad that they used to have good food and good customers service. But now, I'd rather go to other stores that appreciates my business.

Aim S.

Yelp
Pancit from Valerio Bakery Berryessa was so disappointed to eat. No meat and veggies just plain noodles. Did they upgrade the ingredients to vegan now.
google avatar

Hoa Q.

Yelp
I couldn't help it. They not only have the best turons but also the cheapest. So I finally came back to give them another chance after boycotting them for a year for really bad customer service. The friendly staff this time was such a pleasant surprise! And their turons are still just as amazing as ever.

Cynthia R.

Yelp
The desserts are delicious and very authentic Filipino desserts. The bakery store is an in and out select your dessert and out the door.

Yelp
Valerio's City Bakery has a steamtable between the cakes/pastries on the left display case and the buns/breads on the racks. just a few unnamed steam table entrees available. 1 entree w/rice a steal @4.25, 2 items/$8.5 not such a good deal. just a few talbles for eat-in. eats"hopia monoo-chinese beancake/mooncake" (2.50) -flakey, doughy lavers, bean filling inside. -typical hopia also avallable for same price. 3ish.stars take outs: -4 stars for the l item w/rice option(4.25) a steal if u are not hungry, 2 items for 8.50 a bit high. -lots of carb choices, not feeling the need, skipped. ymmv. -many option here....

Yelp
This is basically a rip off of Valerio's TROPICAL BAKESHOP, which was the shop I was actually looking for located in Milpitas. Since we were already out of the way we bought pan de ube and Spanish bread.. at least I asked for Spanish bread, they gave me something with lemon zest in it.. which tasted okay since it was from the "fresh" section, but I was expecting the senoritas. By the way it wasn't fresh. Also, the ladies here don't even say hi when you walk in or thank you after you buy their mediocre food. Typical Filipinos *eyeroll* If you looked up Valerio's, don't go to this place, it's the TROPICAL BAKESHOP you want :)

Yelp
This place is so good! Have been going here since I was little for some authentic Filipino comfort food. Their pan de sal and palabok is to die for.

Yelp
This place will always have a special place in my heart. Good food and affordable, you can't go wrong with that. If you want quality home cook Filipino food, you're at the right spot. Portion is right and did I say affordable?

Yelp
I happened to stumble across this mini bakery. I wouldn't it say it stands out from the outside and inside but it's all about the food. The Ube bread was definitely different and unique, and I got to say that it's delicious. The items here seem to last a decent amount of time before expiring, and you could just eat without preparation. The bread was soft and dense of flour and the ube was a standout balancing the dryness of the bread and a sweet potato like taste. I would probably back here sooner than later.
