Where to Drink Guinness in the Charlotte Area This Holiday Season | Eater

"Perched right on the corner of South Church Street and The Alley, Valhalla — a self-proclaimed Viking pub — is pleasantly more dine than dive. The flickering candles and string lights really set the holiday spirit and with 10 taps to pour and a winding list of snacky bites and entrees, the mix-and-match options are endless. As for ambiance, it’s cozy and den-like — so much so that guests aren’t shy about snuggling up next to each other in the tight booths. Valhalla is an ideal post and pre-game spot for sporting events, or even work happy hours, given it’s planted right in corporate wonderland in Uptown Charlotte." - Kayleigh Ruller

Google
Interesting place with great food and staff. Highly recommend, especially if you are hungry.

Google
Great food! Friendly and funny servers, and an awesome selection. They feature an extensive bar, so you can probably get whatever drink you’d like! I ordered the beer battered fish and chips and wooowwww it was amazing. The breading was light but thick and tasted kind of buttery while the fish was not overcooked at all. Their drinks tasted good also. I will be back!

Google
Stumbled upon this hidden gem. Fun atmosphere with exceptional service. Food was very reasonably priced and delicious! Wings were crispy, meaty, and full of flavor. Cajun garlic dry rub was amazing! 12 wings were only around $16, which is a good price for wings these days. Viking burger was superb! Patty was pork and beef blend, so juicy added bacon was definitely worth it... very thick piece of smoky bacon. Even the turkey wrap was thoroughly enjoyed. Chipotle sauce was delicious! Waffle fries and tater tots were crispy and yummy! We even came back for a drink a second time because we enjoyed it so much. Just be cautious of step going up to restrooms, I tripped every time. They should put sign up, very dangerous.

Google
Fantastic place to spend your time before a gameday. I was here before the Duke’s Mayo Bowl. The entire Alley area is so lively and I highly recommend going here to be with other fans before a sports game. I don’t know if it was just today, but the drinks at this place were very expensive. Good drinks though!

I came here midweek, just to relax after a hard day's work. It was interesting and exciting, and from what I gather, the vibe during the weekend is top-notch. So, I will definitely be going back to experience that weekend vibe.

Google
Follow up to below - Valhalla contacted me quickly & refunded what I asked for in person. Added a star on service, well done! Illr Fiskr In town for a convention and enjoyed a few beers with good service in a unique atmosphere on Monday. Ordered a Rueben & a Cuban with tots as a take-away. Started pouring so Uber the mile+ back to hotel. Taters tasted like shrimp, but tolerable. However both sandwiches tasted incredibly fishy. Wife could not stomach but I did eat ~half of each. Still raining and was not going to Uber back to address the problem that evening and was in meetings & seminars for 2 days. Got back there this afternoon (Wednesday) and kindly asked for the cost of ONE order {$15 of $60} be refunded. Young lady impolitely refused, put it back on me for not coming back that evening or calling; "I was not timely". And no interest in reviewing the register\credit receipts.

Google
Listen. These were the most PERFECTLY crisped wings I have ever had in my life. Wouldn’t necessarily get the Cajun garlic parm again HOWEVER the perfection of the wing itself outdid the lack of flavor. I will definitely be back to try another flavor! Also great selection of beer and overall vibe.

Google
Fantastic experience! James, Jack, and all the staff were on point. The entire team just kept circling inside, through the bar, along the patio checking in on all the tables, not just their own, providing prompt, efficient, and friendly service. The food was fantastic! Best fried fish I've had in a long time. Crispy golden without being greasy. If you're looking for a change of pace from the usual, go with the Lamb Burger. The goat cheese makes the burger! Had a great time at Valhalla - thanks, Team. Can't wait to come back again.

Yelp
I was in town for the FIFA Tournament. I stopped by just for a quick eat but had a really nice time. There were a ton of fans so there was lots of cheering and chanting. It's a small bar but I was able to get a seat right on the end. I got a shrimp wrap that included bacon. Everything was super tasty and fresh. I don't remember the beer I had but it was an IPA. The more bitter one. All beers on draft are local or foreign I believe. I waited on my food for a little and the bartender was nice enough to take half off my wrap for the wait. I didn't ask. There were only two girls behind the bar and they were really working hard, which is why I appreciate one saw I hadn't gotten my food when I hadn't made a fuss about it. I'd go back for sure. Super reasonable and good food.

Yelp
Ragnar's Corned Beef Reuben was delicious--perfectly seasoned and stacked just right. The beer really hit the spot, and the location couldn't be better. Great spot to relax and enjoy a satisfying meal.

Yelp
The food was very good! I had the sentinels torch which is a spicy gin drink and it was perfectly balanced between the sweet honey flavor and the spice. I also had the LODBROK'S LAMB BURGER and it was exactly what I was expecting! The flavors went really well together and if I go back I would get it again. It was pretty loud music wise which was fine. The service is where I felt our trip fell a little short. I accidentally tipped over a cup of water and there was no notice to it until we had already grabbed napkins from the bar and cleaned it up ourselves. I just feel like it was a very transactional but I will most likely be giving it another try since everyone has an off day
google avatar

Yelp
Came here for Sunday brunch and it was delicious! I had the fish and chips and I really liked it. I'll definitely be back for that for sure. It was actually my first time trying fish with the malt vinegar and I'm a fan. So thanks for introducing me to that lol. I've came for drinks before and they don't disappoint. Good beer selection and tasty drinks for sure!
google avatar

Yelp
Amazing! The drinks are cheap and they had everything we wanted. They also had a water station to help yourself. I was honestly nervous to order food as it seemed like just a bar, but the food was great!!! There aren't many tables and when we went, you just seated yourself. I would go back!!
google avatar

Alexandra E.

Yelp
It's a Small place with plenty of seating, but minimal space to walk around. Be aware that it is loud if the place is full. The staff is all very fast to greet and serve you, and the drinks are tasty and served in good time. I had the shrimp tacos, and fries, both were delicious good and a good size helping. Also Moderately priced.

Yelp
I recently dropped in for lunch with coworkers, one who suggested Valhalla. Having never been before I recognized it definitely has the "bar" vibe. We were welcomed by friendly staff and seated in a booth along the wall. After looking over the menu, and hearing the daily specials I went with the special, a creamy chicken noodle soup and grilled cheese. The soup was good, but large chucks of chicken that were hard to eat, since we were only given a spoon. In addition, the soup had raw jalapeños which was a little strange to me when it comes with chicken noodle soup. The grilled cheese included a perfect amount of cheese and toasty bread. Overall it was a nice lunch, and if back look forward to trying other menu items.
google avatar

Yelp
Great little city bar. Seating in the front with a nice private room in the back. Great bar food. The 2 options we had were both very fresh and tasty. Headed back soon to try some other menu items.

Yelp
This is the coolest little place in Flett. I found it having lunch here. The decor is really good. All the staff is just happy faces smiles and really really really good. I freaking love it if you're coming to Charlotte you gotta check this place out.
google avatar

Greg C.

Yelp
If you want to enjoy a fun and unique dining experience this is the place to go. Set in the French sector that is full of small restaurants with great variety. It is located across from a local park Romare Bearden. I recommend the fish and chips and a choice of beer. It is exceptionally flavorful. Their other fare is delicious as well. I haven't tried them but many recommend the chicken wings. It is at times quiet and intimate. Then at other times loud and noisy. They also have small tables outside. Either way you will enjoy yourself. The individuals working there are kind, polite and very helpful. It is also very clean. You can sit up front and look out the large windows and watch people go by and also see some of the local characters in the area. Just enjoy a unique experience in downtown Charlotte.

Yelp
Love Valhalla! Service is always good. Awesome food and vibe. I tried their lamb burger for the first time and loved it. Chai spice old fashioned was a bit too strong, but loved it - perhaps I needed that ;-)
google avatar

Destiny H.

Yelp
Located in uptown, it's a dive bar in a strip of other dive bars, that we locals call the French quarter. walking distance to the ball field. The food is really good, and I was pleasantly surprised with this chicken dish. It's easily a 10/10 wish there were more cider or wine options but again, it's a dive bar. I recommend it for food for sure!

Yelp
We had brunch here with the groom while waiting for the wedding later in the afternoon. The food was pretty good. Better than the pictures looked on the menu. I had the breakfast wrap and the groom had the Caesar wrap. I had the tots which were nice and crispy and he had the fries. Turned out to be waffle fries which were dope. We had seasonal cocktails which were boozy and tasty. The vibe was good. There was only one other table in there since it was early, but the staff were super friendly and attentive.

Yelp
The location is great if you're uptown and parking isn't an issue! The main area was deafening at 1pm but there's a back room with a few tables that was cool and quiet. The waitress was great. Our party of 3 had the fish and chips (which were good) and burgers (classified as very good). The fries were tasty but only room temperature. This place is probably terrific if you want a rowdy pub vibe on a nice summer evening.

Food C.

Yelp
After eating here several times I thought I would submit my review as I see it. Tonight I had the Viking burger and fries. The burger was soo soo at best fries were waffle fries which it did not state when ordering. Wife had the Reuben . It was pitiful. No meat and tons of sauerkraut  This is a great atmosphere but more of a tourist place because of all the positive reviews. Like I said from the start I have been here several times and would not return for food unless someone in my party wanted to go here

Yelp
This place is located right in the front of the French Quarter area of uptown charlotte. I went here for part of girl's day on a sunny yet fall Saturday. This place has a bar. They have a pretty cool beer selection that they have a menu for which included beers in car/bottle and on tap. It was not super packed this day. I will say that the service was pretty good. The waiter was on top of things! Our drinks were refilled consistently and we were checked on. They were very personable and providing great beer suggestions as my aunt and cousin were interested in trying some. My friend ordered a lemon drop and she enjoyed it. As for food, we ordered appetizers and entrees. For appetizers we ordered: chips & salsa, pretzel bites, and the chicken bites (with the sauce on the side). I will honestly say the best out of this selection was the chips & salsa. The salsa was really good. However, the chicken tasted a bit unseasoned which was not my favorite aspect. For my entrée, I ordered the cajun shrimp wrap with tater tots. My wrap was really good and so were the tater tots. It was my second time getting the shrimp wrap and it did not disappoint either time,

Yelp
Getting back into uptown Charlotte was so nice!! We had an awesome Sunday going to Discovery Place and then walking over to Valhalla for awesome food! The lamb burger was surprisingly curried, but it worked. The flat meat balls were delicious and veggies were so fresh! My son especially enjoyed the fresh squeezed orange juice! Service was great too -- thanks to the staff!
google avatar

Emily B.

Yelp
Friendly service and good beer selection. While in town for a Hornets game, we enjoyed the pretzel bites as an appetizer and two orders of the fish and chips as entrees. Vidar's Triple Grill (grilled cheese) was satisfying, but we recommend getting the lingonberry jelly on the side so you can make your own choice about whether it's to your taste.
google avatar

Yelp
Great establishment. Valhalla Pub is a Eastern European pub with decor inspired by Norse methodology. See the walls decorated with Beowulf, spears, and Viking vibes for the pub's theme. The burgers themselves are great as a burger should taste. It's cooked well with a nice sauce and the fries are delicious Service is nice and you are offered both drinks and food. Would recommend for a lunch spot during work if you can get out during a nice afternoon
google avatar

Betsy M.

Yelp
Had a wonderful buffalo chicken salad with a side of wasabi ranch dressing (fabulous!)! The table also enjoyed fish and chips and the chicken breast with mashed potatoes and broccoli with the most delicious dill sauce! A staple for my son and his fiancé but a delightful treat for me on this visit! Service was very friendly and quick, busy and causal environment, really felt like home! Highly recommend when you're in Charlotte! Sorry no picture, food was gone so quickly. Next time I will post pics

Yelp
Great food and beer. Cool spot to watch some games and enjoy some beer. Only downside is I wish they could play the volume for the games, but I understand why they can't.

Yelp
nothing like a little viking food after a long day slogging from museum to museum through the blowy midday cold of Charlotte in April... and other than the names of the dishes Valhalla is nothing like viking food. got a table and snapped the QR menu - I get it but that doesn't mean I have to like it - and put in a request for BBQ chickenachos app and an AMB cider for me while my lovely bride went with an surprisingly good albeit slightly out-of-season pumpkin ale. for not being in the typical viking's wheelhouse the nachos were alright for nachos, nothing really to brag about but they got the job done and eased us into our mains. I don't often have actual lamb so lodbrok's lamburger was an interesting foray into the unknown for me. it looks and eats like a 'normal' burger but has the earthier flavors of goat cheese and chopped lamb, red onion is always a winner away from beefs and since the mayo wasn't pronounced I'm assuming it played nice with the rest of my sandwich as did the cucumber salad which was done very well, thank you :-) her drunken fish tacos hit the spot and swam around it; a trio of tortillas with chunks of battered haddock and red cabbage slaw sharing some space on a plate... yumm, it's a little spendy but I'd eat here again.
google avatar

Joyce J.

Yelp
Cool pub experience. We just enjoyed appetizers - the trio dips and loaded tots but they were good. Great local draft selection. And we just liked saying we went to Valhalla :)
google avatar

Greg R.

Yelp
Had the pretzels and pimento cheese followed by a Buffalo chicken salad. Excellent flavor and reasonably priced. A great little spot. Ask for Carson

Yelp
Some of the best food in Charlotte!! Staff is amazing! The place may look small but do not underestimate this place. Would 100% recommend to grab good food and drinks with friends, happy hour (which they have an amazing happy hour menu) or just get a bite! Love love love this place!!!!

Josh J.

Yelp
Valhalla, the place where Viking warriors go if they die in battle or in this case, the place with average food. We went here with four people and we all got something different so there was quite a bit of variety on the table. I'll start with what I had. I had the Turkey Rueben. The taste just wasn't there. Overall the sandwich was overpowered by the roasted turkey. I don't know how to describe the taste but I guess I would best describe it as an overbearing roast flavor instead of turkey flavor. Probably one of the worst Rueban's I've ever had. My wife, got the Chicken Caesar. Her chicken was burnt and rubbery. The lettuce was good though and they put on quite a bit of dressing which she did like. I'd like to give credit here but it's kind of hard to screw up lettuce. My daughter's boyfriend got the meatball sandwich. He said the flavor was good, but the meat was also rubbery. My daughter got a hamburger with bacon. I will say she is an incredibly picky eater who doesn't like to try new foods. But, she did say the burger was really good. The bacon she got was some of the thickest bacon I've ever seen on a burger. We also got a small order of wings and they were not bad but they were not standing out. They were just wings with standard buffalo sauce. Same with the fries. Just standard and nothing to really set them apart from other places. The last thing I'll say is on the service. Our waitress was very good and attentive to us. She kept our drinks topped off. I wish I had got her name because she was really the only solid thing at this place.
google avatar

Marissa C.

Yelp
We ate here on a Saturday afternoon. The atmosphere is relaxed and friendly. We ordered Valhalla Chicken bites, Odin's Pretzel bites, along with chips and salsa to start. The salsa was the favorite of our group. We requested the sauces for the chicken bites on the side instead of tossed since there were so many palates. The chicken was unseasoned which was disappointing. The pretzel bites were decent, the cheese on top was interesting. I had the lamb burger which was tasty. The curry mayo went well with the goat cheese and lamb seasoning. The service was excellent especially with the time of day that we went. Several servers stopped by to make sure we were ok. Our water glasses stayed full and drinks replenished quickly. They have a few televisions for watching sports. The outdoor patio is shared with a few other restaurants and looked cozy.
google avatar

Ashley H.

Yelp
Service was great but food was just okay. I came during HH and the menu was much smaller than posted on Yelp for it. That's alright but the meatball sliders were just mediocre.

Lisa R.

Yelp
Needed a place for the family to grab lunch and this was the perfect place! Loaded tots were perfect for my girls to split. Hubby got the drunken fish tacos and there was a HUGE amount of fish on them, had to be at least 2 filets per tortilla (was chopped up) I chose the Sliders and a side Cesar salad and both I would order again. The salad was well dressed and great Cesar flavor. The meatball slider has amazing flavor and the goat cheese just took it to another level. Great draft selection of beer/cider also. Servers were prompt and polite. Will definitely be returning.

Yelp
Solid place to grab a brew and some food. Service is great, ambiance is vey rustic dive bar!

Yelp
Great cozy pub right next door. Great time in the cold cold weather...... zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzx
google avatar

Charles V.

Yelp
This pub was a lot of fun. Although small, it had a vibrant atmosphere. And the service was great! Their beer selection covered all the bases ... and I decided to go with a local lager. Regarding the food, also really good. I enjoyed some buffalo wings and then went for the fried haddock sandwich. There was everything to like about this sandwich ... the soft roll, the ripe tomatoes, and of course the perfectly cooked fish. Although I tend to go burger, I absolutely made the right choice.
google avatar

Yelp
I love this place. One of my favorite in Uptown. They always have a great draft beer selection and a few dark options that are sure to please any beer lover. My favorite meal here is the cheese steak with fries. I honestly only get this. One of the best cheese steaks in Charlotte. Their fries are crispy and flavorful. Quality meat and cheese and fresh veggies. Always good service and a fun place to visit if you in the French Quarter area.
google avatar

Yelp
Valhalla Pub & Eatery has become my go-to spot for lunch during the week. I started working in Uptown during the pandemic, so it is a really odd time to try and figure out the restaurant scene. Valhalla is a quick and easy spot to grab lunch, if you work in Uptown. It is also a good place if you are looking for outdoor seating. Valhalla has a great pub feel. It is what I imagine a pub in the UK would feel like. Don't be fooled by the atmosphere though; Valhalla actually has some really good food. They have typical pub fare, but it is all high quality. Nothing is overly greasy or something that you can tell they just popped in a microwave. I have had a few things and they have all been really good. You can even get entrees on the healthier/lighter side. I would highly recommend both the Sesame Seared Ahi Tuna Salad and the Black & Blue Sirloin Salad. If you're in the mood for more traditional pub fare, you can't go wrong with a burger or the turkey sandwich with some tater tots on the side. The tater tots are a stand out. They aren't too greasy and have a good crisp to them without being overcooked. I would recommend with a side of their Wasabi Ranch. As I've always come at lunch, I've never stopped in for a drink, but that is on the list now that Covid restrictions are being lifted. Valhalla is a great place to grab lunch outside with good food at reasonable prices.
google avatar

Jeremy M.

Yelp
Just the right amount of food. For the amount of people in that place, the service the ladies done was great. It had a great European Viking ambiance. Great beer selection as well. Right on the corner with an alley of other great restaurants!
google avatar

Brian V.

Yelp
I had been here several years ago on the day of a Knights game and the place was a mad house. This visit I was solo on a mellow Monday @ 5ish. I sat at the first bar seat I found available and ordered a Good Morning Vietnam Vanilla Blonde Ale from Wooden Robot Brewery. Good choice. The bartender was especially helpful with both my beer and food selection. I followed my beer with a Cuban pork sammich with a side Caesar salad. The beer, sammich and Caesar were the perfect combo. The pork on the sammich was heavenly, tender, tasty and piled high. The pickle added to the taste and was Dillicous!!! The Caesar salad had just the right amount of dressing and was served in a soup crock. This meal was just the right portion size and the price was right also. Since it's right around the corner from my office this will be a frequent stop going forward.

Yelp
Before a knights game my family stopped at Valhalla. The place was pretty busy when we walked in and I thought "oh boy, it's gonna be a while before we get served." We were luck enough to grab a table and before we could even sit, had a server handing us menus, ready to take our order. Great service. My son ordered the Ahi tuna, which he said was great. I wanted to try, but he ate them up to fast. My wife is celiac and there's not much to offer a person here who's gluten free. So we ordered the chips and salsa. Unfortunately she got sick from what I assume was cross contamination in the fryer oil. Put a damper on the rest of our night because she wasn't feeling well. It was our fault though. Should have been more careful. This is the second time we've been to Valhalla and it's a cool bar in a hopping spot Uptown.

Yelp
I was in Charlotte for a work conference. Wandered around and found this place. Had the Ruben. It was really good. Service was great. Great beer and a great atmosphere. I highly recommend.

Yelp
Let me start by saying that our server, Joe, is amazing. If you're lucky enough to snag him, you won't be disappointed. We were a lively foursome and it was his first week of work! He rattled off the menu like an old pro. Uptown on a rare Sunday evening landed us here after realizing we were too "seasoned" (aka Old) for the Ink and Ivy crowd. Glad we remembered the French Quarter area and stumbled upon this gem. We were initially seated in the front. It was a tad tight for our taste and a friend realized there was more seating in the back area of the pub. Perfect! The four of us had that entire area to ourselves. Even though we were tucked away from the crowd, we were never forgotten. Joe explained the drinks and I had one of the best glasses of Malbec ever; Joe suggested it and even brought the bottle for me to snap a picture. We also had a few tequila shots with very generous pours for the birthday guy we were celebrating. I chose the Cajun shrimp wrap minus the lettuce and tomatoes and it was WONDERFUL! Joe was concerned the wrap might be too thin without the veggie trimmings but it wasn't. It has just enough heat and the shrimp were plentiful. Others at my table had wings that they also said were tasty. Cute location in the heart of Uptown. Awesome customer service. Great food. You've got to check this spot out!
google avatar

Yelp
Serious gourmet style food at a pub So good! And so many local option for everything. Staff is friendly and very knowledgeable about beers. It's easy to tell lots of thought is put into every customer. This was my first trip to the area and will be coming back for the fish and chips. Presentation Flavor quite possibly my fave F&C eva

Yelp
Liked this place a lot! Very casual eatery, good atmosphere, and good service. Waiter came over very fast & was pleasant to chat with. Food and drinks were typical bar food but very good! We all ordered margaritas and they were huge & delicious. Portion sizes were great as well. No complaints and definitely recommend for a casual night out in uptown!

Yelp
Visiting from Cali., in need of something yummy! Out of the 11 tables inside this pub, 3 were occupied when I entered. Upon my request to sit at the window, I was told that table (for 4) needed to be saved for a large party. I was directed to a table (for 4) away from the window. By the time my meal was served, a couple were seated at the window. The fish was delicious, the servers ranking of customers is a Hard No! There are Many Fish (Resturant's) in The Sea!

Ken G.

Yelp
My wife was in Charlotte for work so I was doing my own thing. I went to Romare Bearden park and was sitting there reading a book and got to thinking "I'm hungry" and started looking at YELP. Valhalla was right behind me across the street. I had the Lagertha's Turkey Sandwich, I have never had green apples on a sandwich. It was amazing!! I got the tator tots instead of the french fries and it made my lunch great. I had a couple of local beers while I was there, don't remember the name. I recommend Valhalla Pub and Eatery for dinner. Enjoy
google avatar

Sam M.

Yelp
Food is always great! You should really try the GMOT chicken and the mashed potatoes. Great for lunch and not too heavy. To make it even better, ask for the sauce on the chicken to be put on the potatoes. When you're there, make sure to ask for Carter to be your server! Carter always is friendly, polite, and does a great job!

Yelp
Solid spot to grab a drink and a bite to eat in uptown. Second time coming. Had the shrimp wrap and fries both times which is solid. Both times we have come before a show and it's been convenient. Good location and good service this last time.

Yelp
We went here to watch the Liverpool finals. The place was jammed packed wall to wall. Obviously, It's difficult to gage the attentiveness of the staff or really anything on a day such as that. What I can say is there were adequate televisions around, and blessedly they had the fans going to cool the crowd down. They didn't have any beers that I wanted, and their prices were a bit inflated. The ladies bathrooms smelled like a piss pot. The wait staff was a bunch of snotty, blondes with funky looking shorts, wedged severely and probably painfully into their board-flat behinds, sneakers and a metric ton of trashy makeup. In fairness they could have just had long hard days, with the huge influx of customers, but they all seemed to have resting bitch faces and attitudes to match. There were cups, trash and plates of discarded food all over all of the tables. Since there were kids all around someone could have gotten hurt. I am not sure why no attempts were made to discard the dirty cups and plates. Who knows perhaps I will go there on another day and have a different experience. If that ever happens I will happily update my review.

Yelp
Carter is the best! She has a very positive attitude. The foods good too. Great sports bar.

Yelp
Stop by happen stance...had lunch and was a surprise. Salmon salad was amazing the survive was fantastic! Fun dive bar feel, but was very nice.

Yelp
Carter is the most gracious of people. Excellent service by her and the food was good! Great place to hang before the game! Go Cocks!
