"Valley Fish and Cheese is the town’s well-deserved claim to fame. Mike Valley has been running the quirky smoked fish shop since 1983, and it’s every bit as good as locals would have you believe."

If you like quirky shops, smoked fish, or taxidermy... this place is for you. I've never been to a shop with such an odd array of items! They have both animal pelts & children's toys. The summer sausage & meat sticks were very yummy! For the daring: snapping turtle jerky was surprisingly tasty! But, we couldn't bring ourselves to try the catfish bologna.

We stopped in today, on 6/6/24 around 12:30ish. We’re on our way out of town back to Milwaukee. I’ve been wanting to stop at this place since I saw Valley Fish on Wisconsin Foodie years ago. I purchased some alligator jerky, perch jerky and Cajun beef jerky, along with some cheese sticks. On our drive home I asked for some Cajun jerky, and unfortunately my wife noticed some mold on the jerky. I was pretty frustrated as I paid a lot of money for this, I wish I would’ve seen it prior to leaving the store. I tried the alligator jerky which was good and yet to try the perch jerky, but the Cajun is pretty much moot because the mold could’ve spread throughout the small bag. I didn’t have him give me a receipt either, so all I could ask if for a refund on that item with my cc I used to purchase. Overall a really cool place, but having to throw away jerky due to mold isn’t what I was hoping for. Oh well.

This is a unique place. Never have seen such a variety of fresh water fish and turtle! Smoked flathead catfish jerky is delicious! They also have a good selection of cheese, sausages and other meats. Friendly owner.

If you like smoked fish you will need to visit this place. I tried the smoked sturgeon and catfish. Both tasted great. They have a decent selection of cheeses. It is the smoked fish that will make me stop here whenever we pass through this city.

Tried the smoked catfish, Sturgeon, and perch… all amazingly delicious! Also tried the perch jerky, equally just as fantastic. Wish I could get it shipped!

Yelp
For what 'Valley Fish and Cheese' is, it deserves the five stars that I gave it. The owners actually send their own 'Valley Fish and Cheese' boats out onto the Mississippi River to fish - so you can imagine how fresh their freshwater fish is, and how pure and clean of any additives their smoked fish is. 'Valley Fish and Cheese' is situated at a point in the Mississippi that has a large permanent island called St. Feriole Island, or "Island #172" (which is at least semi-permanent when looking at it in geological-time terms, because the river is always shifting). There are three launch docks for 16' long roofless aluminum motorboats, so they do a lot of river fishing, mostly with nets, like in the 'Old Country'. The most common edible fish from the river are Bass, Perch, Bluegill, Buffalo Fish, Crappie, Catfish, and Biting-Turtles, as well ancient fish such as Paddlefish, Lake Sturgeon and Shovelnose Sturgeon. A typical morning's haul yields around 30 to 60 fish. I guess that's why the top selling items at 'Valley Fish and Cheese' are Smoked Whitefish, Bass, Perch, & Sturgeon (with it's dense yellow meat), with all of them being delicious (and believe me, I've tried almost everything). Also, the fish are expertly filleted into steaks (washing off the blood & slime), leaving plenty of fresh clean flesh on the frames to sell for stock (which I bought and used to make a delicious American style Bouillabaisse, as well as an extra two gallons of plain fish-broth, which I froze in 8 one pint freezer bags for... whatever). Some fillets are salted, peppered, and grilled over charcoal to sell in sandwiches or alone. Other steaks are put into a rotating smoker heated with smoldering wood covered in brown sugar. Some smokers have stationary cooking shelves, while others are more like ovens with many slow-moving rotating shelves. The remaining bits & trimmings are grilled or smoked to create snacky-bite tenders, great for kids (but I liked them too, especially when I got them in a bag for the car). They also Brush-on Marinades and later-added spice rubs, which are all also key to the flavor. From Teriyaki to Old Bay, and from Cajun to plain Salt-Pepper & Lemon, the extra added flavors transforms each piece of every different type of fish species, with their variety of textures and density, whether grilled or smoke, into a different delicious experience with each and every combination. I cannot praise this place highly enough. NOTE: 'Valley Fish and Cheese' offers homemade Candy, as well as numerous other fresh, smoked, cured, and pickled products including - Live Turtles for Meat (Turtle Soup with Sherry is delicious), Turtle Jerky, Catfish-Bologna, Alligator Jerky, various homemade exotic rare Deli Meats (like smoked Coon Paws), and of course, lots of Cheeses, including Wisconsin's Famous Cheese Curds. All that I can say is "YUM"!

Yelp
Stopped in there Sunday on the way to Gays Mills for apples. They had some smoked perch right out of the smoker...It is fantastic. Also got some alligator jerky that is great. This place is a "Must Stop" when in the area. You just can't believe all the great items they have for sale. Worth the 2 hour trip to the area just to stop here..

Yelp
Great fun place, wonderful employees, and outstanding foods! Can't wait to come back.

Yelp
This place is worth the trip to PdC - more interesting than the nearby historic site! First you have the kitschy outdoor decor that lends itself to many photo-ops! Inside it is packed with great products and more funky decor. Watch out for the prankster owner Mike! Kids will love this place. Many great cheeses and condiments are available but it is the smoked fish selection that rocks. We tried the smoked Walleye and it was delicious - it was a bit jerky like. We also bought the perch jerky but we haven't sampled it yet. Too much to choose from here. The only disappointment was that they did not have smoked fish spread on this day. A must stop!

Yelp
Interesting place to visit. They had a nice variety of cheeses, salamis, smoked fish etc, and jams and jelly's and pickled items. Eclectic mix of animal bones and other things. Worth a stop to see the mix of fun items in and out.

Yelp
Picked up some smoked salmon that was just ok. Snapper soup, still looking for the turtle meat. Most disconcerting though was the cashier was not wearing a mask. It's not a political statement folks. It's keeping people safe. I will not return.

Yelp
This place rocks! I had vowed to stop here but never got around to it. In the future, I will not pass by without dropping in. I had the turtle soup as well as the smoked perch. They were both top rate. I also brought back some alligator jerky and it is out of this world. Don't let the eclectic appearance dissuade you from stopping. This place is top notch. I just wish I'd bought more of that smoked fish! Great stuff and friendly folks. What a great find!

Yelp
Valley Fish and Cheese was a perfect stop for human fuel before we headed over to Pike's Peak. Thank God for Wisconsin's food culture. They have what people crave for energy: smoked fish (we got walleye), cheese (we got horseradish cheese), snapping turtle sausage, homemade beef jerky, and crackers. We ate outside at a picnic table, and then I got my picture taken with the gigantic muskie.

Yelp
Excellent and unique experience! We visited Prarie du Chein and when we asked where to get Wisconsin cheese on a Sunday, this place was recommended. We weren't steered wrong! The smoked perch was absolutely delicious!

Yelp
Been strong wIth the ways of nature for years. You want authentic? Do you? Then set the sight here. Focus now. Fresh smoked fish daily. Just look outside. See the smoker? That's tomorrow's meal. Fresh cheese curds webbed wIth delightful flavours. Crackers jams jellies and other exotics such as alligator. Like jerky? Stop. Do it. You owe it to yourself. I've been coming here since the 1980s. This place has all the charm of a riverfront cabin. But forget that you want the taste. Try the smoked fish. Any of the fish. Doesn't matter. Smoke flavoured with a sweet coating. Beverages available too. Don't worry if you park on the street. That's why the roads so wide. Enjoy!!!!!

Yelp
An exciting business to drop in while spelunking along the Mississippi River towns of Iowa and Wisconsin. Where else are you going to find smoked sturgeon, buffalo fish, carp and turtle. Take home some authentic maple syrup, a big turtle shell, exciting local cheeses or souvenirs. The show alone is worth the visit.

Yelp
FUN FUN FUN and the food selection is divine great fish creamy delicious cheeses local jams and jellies. a must stop in.

Yelp
This place is an absolute must if you are passing through Town. The owner is very friendly and has many great stories about fishing and hunting. Walked out with a bunch of different cheeses and smoked fish. They also have a web site and ship. The place was awesome! We will definitely be going back.

Yelp
So glad we stopped here! We got smoked salmon and catfish, horseradish cheese curds and alligator jerky. All excellent. The sea salt chocolate caramels are amazing! Lots of interesting options!
