The World's Most Unusual Displays of Neon

"The Valley Relics Museum is the creation of San Fernando Valley native Tommy Gelinas, who serves as the lone curator of the collection. His museum houses a masterful assortment of salvaged signage and other glorious gems, united in their celebration of commercial archaeology. This fantastic assemblage is a non-profit operation, founded with the mission of preserving and telling the stories of the people who shaped this region of California, while highlighting its role in the larger nation’s development. Through the use of pop ephemera from decades past, the bulk of the collection tells the peoples’ story: vintage BMX bikes are given equal weight to menus from restaurants long since closed, while clothing and yearbooks belonging to the region’s prior generations are valued just as highly as well as a prized assortment of rare photographs and documents all hailing from the San Fernando Valley.  Everywhere one looks, relics literally hang from the ceiling and are stacked against the walls. Building-sized neon signs, pulled directly from landmark restaurants, lean against the fringes of the museum. Meanwhile, at the center of the museum, sit several one-of-a-kind classic cars, including one with a set of longhorns affixed to its front bumper, and a pair of gleaming, ornamental pistols on each fender. Encircling this automotive circus is a curated selection of immediately recognizable cartoon statues of the Chipmunks, Pep Boys, and even a Big Boy. By touring Gelinas’ Valley Relics Museum, visitors are afforded a real-world peek into the mishmash of colorful aesthetics and cultural relics that are so quintessentially “Old California” – one, these days, that can all too often only be found in fictionalized, fleeting glimpses via Turner Classic Movies." - ATLAS_OBSCURA

LA’s Valley Relics Restaurant Museum Gets New Warehouse Space in Van Nuys - Eater LA

"The museum is known for its exhaustive collection of old LA restaurant ephemera and is getting a new warehouse that will double its storage capacity to 10,000 square feet, allowing more room for old neon signs, cars, menus, and old food stands like Tail O’ the Pup." - Farley Elliott

The Valley Relics Museum is an absolute gem! Packed with cool artifacts from the San Fernando Valley and beyond, it’s a nostalgic trip through L.A.'s pop culture history. The collection of neon signs is especially impressive, but there’s also a huge variety of other pieces that touch on everything from old restaurants and entertainment to fashion and sports. It's not a huge museum, but there’s so much to look at that you can easily spend a couple hours here. Whether you're a local or just visiting, it's well worth the stop!

jule

Google
cool neon signs, lots of old trinkets and merch. went for the nudie cohn related stuff, of which there was only the one jacket, but had fun with the included arcade games

As a San Fernando Valley resident for the past 20 years, this place brings back so many memories. It has signs from so many memorable restaurants and landmarks such as Tower Records, Pioneer Chicken, My Brothers BBQ, and so many others. We rented the place for a party and they had vintage video games (Ms. Pac Man and Street Fighter). Definitely recommend donating memorabilia and visiting this place!

Google
If you love neon signs and LA nostalgia, this place is a treasure. It’s in a hangar, which makes it feel like a secret stash. Volunteers are happy to tell stories about where items came from. Family-friendly without being cutesy. Check their hours—they’re limited but worth aligning with

Google
I’ve always been deeply interested in local valley history, so this place was an incredible experience for me and my mom! It looks small, but there are so many bits of history and memorabilia to look at. I would definitely go here again! The second room also has a few arcade games which were fun as well. By the way, tickets are $15 for adults

Google
Free parking and free pinball machines. Great exhibits full of neon signs. Definitely coming back .

Google
This museum is a nostalgic blast—neon signs, old menus, and valley history everywhere. It’s in a hangar at the airport which adds to the vibe. Volunteers are super into the stories behind each piece. We spent about 90 minutes and could’ve stayed longer. Great rainy-day activity

Google
This is a nice museum to basically take you back in the past which is hidden in the valley. You can park inside where this museum is at or so street parking. Seeing the older school TV and old bike style basically brought back memories for me. You'll have a wonderful time walking around the things they have on display here

Yelp
Ok, amazing! I want to have all my parties here! Great history of Los Angeles up close, great staff. So happy to finally have gotten here! If you love history and Los Angeles, this is a must visit!
google avatar

Patrick M.

Yelp
Valley Relics is astounding! I am a complete nerd for this type of nostalgic history! The displays are diverse and facinating. There are so many subjects and artifacts representing topics such as Aviation, Military, Movies, TV, Sports, Music, etc, etc. The many Neon signs on display present a compelling window into the history of the San Fernando Valley. I had so much fun touring this museum and I highly recommend it to any history buffs as well as entertainment fans looking for a great place to visit!
google avatar

Yelp
What an amazing place, and an even more amazing place for a valley girl. It is so nostalgic walking in here, not just the neon signs of restaurant and business past, but also a treasure trove of curated movie and actor memorabilia. Each section is beautifully created from airplane and war related memorabilia, old TV shows like gunsmoke in a movie and music section...it really has something nostalgic for all! $15 for admission, with a little gift shop to pick up something that reminds you of your childhood. The guys working in the front were so amazing and friendly, and Julie, one of the museums curators was so full of knowledge and took the time to show us her personal collections and share stories of her rich history on SFV. The museum is tucked inside what looks like an industrial park, parking is free and in abundance. Definetly a place to visit when you are feeling nostalgic, and am so proud to be apart of this amazing valley!
google avatar

Alan C.

Yelp
A very nice selection of relics that will bring back some childhood memories. Friendly staff makes it quite nice.
google avatar

Daniel P.

Yelp
Love this place. There's something for everyone here. From video games to BMX memorabilia, your inner child with thank you. Check it out, with your family or a date!
google avatar

Yelp
This is a very small museum. It's located in an airport hanger but it's really only a couple of rooms. You can see everything in under an hour. That said I still found it to be an interesting combo of valley nostalgia and some hollywood history. There are a few vintage arcade games that my kids loved playing (all free to play). Admission is a bit pricey for what it is ($15/adult) but kids were free so in the end not a bad way to kill an hour on the weekend with kids. I don't mind the admission fee so much because I love that places like this exist and hope they continue to. The gift shop is cute - full of t-shirts with a lot of valley references.

Lisa B.

Yelp
Once you find this amazing gem, it's not easy to see driving by, it's a fantastic museum! The people working on the day I went were very friendly. Inside is unbelievable. They have items from movies to music, to aerospace, to neon signs, to cars used in films, and more. I didn't know what to expect, but I've been wanting to go for years. Everything has history of things in the valley (hence the name of the museum). There's a tiny gift store when you walk in. They have VERY limited hours, so check before you go! Thank you for doing an amazing job cataloging everything for this museum!!!
google avatar

Sam P.

Yelp
If you grew up in the San Fernando Valley you can revisit your past with the amazing artifacts. If you did not grow up here the artifacts are so amazing you'll be glad you came. Something for everyone! And free video games and pinball machines to play for kids of all ages. See it all!
google avatar

Ant M.

Yelp
I have wanted to come here for a while and finally got the opportunity. This a great, museum-especially if you grew up in the San Fernando Valley, aka The Valley, and you are a fan of nostalgia. This museum seems to appeal to the 70's babies or earlier. I didn't see any '20s or 30's something. But being a culture Junkie, I loved it. And if you have kids or with someone who isn't interested, there are free archaic arcade games. FYI, the entrance to the museum is in the back. Enter on the side street. Enjoy Peace/Love Be A Proud American
google avatar

Debbie F.

Yelp
If your from the San Fernando valley this place is for you! So many memories come to life here. Hands on fun free arcade pinball games in the large room. Free parking in front. Plan to spend at least an hour here.
google avatar

Christine H.

Yelp
My brother had his wedding reception here and it was absolutely unique and fun! The space was large enough to fit about 100 people including tables, bar and appetizer/desert table. Outside we brought in a taco truck which the guests loved! While guests mingled, they had the opportunity to look around and see all the fun vintage memorabilia and artifacts from Hollywood's golden age. They also have arcade games available to play, like pinball and video games! It's a little hard to find, and parking is so-so, but once you do get there, it's a great time! Place only has two unisex bathrooms on each end of the premises.
google avatar

Claire G.

Yelp
Really cool collection of vintage stuff! It looks like an antique mall turned museum. Definitely worth visiting.
google avatar

Hvydrt 0.

Yelp
Cool place and very educational too. Good nostalgic atmosphere and old school video game play with paid admission.
google avatar

Abel R.

Yelp
Brought my son to this museum for his birthday. We had a great time. I showed him the BMX bike collection, red line bikes, movie memorabilia and all the old classic neon building signs. The stuff they have here, you will probably never see again. It doesn't exist anymore. If your nostalgic for the 80's and 70's, then you'll have a great time here. It's not very big, but you'll sure have fun reminiscing. I guarantee it. I know I did.
google avatar

Brett P.

Yelp
When Los Angeles is discussed as a city the valley is usually overlooked ignoring its rather large part of the story of the city. The Valley Relic museum is a loving tribute to the valley, and no matter what any one else try to tell you "the valley" is the San Fernando valley no where else can usurp that title. The museum covers the aerospace, film, and pop culture contributions to our history and if you have spent any amount of time living here, or like me are a valley relic you will find several things here to stir your memories. From the Paladino's sign to the Porter Ranch statues which anyone here in the 70' will remember always had a beer in their hands or were dressed for most holidays this is a happy trip down memory lane. It will be difficult to not spend a fortune on valley themed shirts... I know because I have. Well worth a visit.
google avatar

Anthony L.

Yelp
Just loved it! Was there for a birthday party on 9/2 and truly enjoyed the venue. The eccentric museum was such a joy walking down memory lane. You build your own catering service, bar and rock band. We just had so much fun!
google avatar

Quintin E.

Yelp
A very cool non traditional museum with relics from several decades past including vintage arcade machines (for free play), classic cars, rare documents, uniforms, neon signs and vintage collectibles to name a few. They also have some great items on sale in their gift shop, which I believe can also be purchased online. Finding this place might be the only obstacle to your visit here, but it'll definitely be a worth while experience when you do. There is an abundance of street parking off Stagg St as well as a couple spots in the parking lot that can fill up fast. Seeing some of the history of the SFV/The Great 818 via Valley Relics is definitely an experience you'll appreciate for sure as well as all they have to offer.

Nick M.

Yelp
Was excited to visit, but just got an email saying your tickets have been refunded. No explanation, nothing. What is going on?
google avatar

Steve K.

Yelp
I've come to the museum many times. Always awesome! I'm so happy it exists. An amazing collection of SFV "relics". I highly recommend checking it out. It's so cool!
google avatar

Steve B.

Yelp
Awesome place saving the history of the San Fernando Valley and all of Los Angeles You got to check it out!
google avatar

Ali H.

Yelp
super cool neon signs, random la memorabilia. enjoyed going through it. time capsule of la.
google avatar

Monica R.

Yelp
Indeed 3.7. The place is well done in curiosity, many historical signs. However, people like me, who grew up in another country, don't know about the signs or some people exposed in. I could enjoy it because my husband knows a little bit more about and he did explain to me. Really cool for folks who grew up in the region, went in some places the museum shows and take good Instagram! I will give a tip, I was in a museum in Arkansas, Native American Museum. They have a control with numbers and when you se the piece of the number, you have a explanation about for 30 seconds. The museum don't need to catalog everything, but the most important and curious to the public. I still recommend the place for friends! Think it!
google avatar

Maruko X.

Yelp
Now they're open normally during weekends, and it's convenient to book tickets online in advance. It is a museum located in the San Fernando Valley, and Valley Relics was once one of the winners of Best Of L.A. Arts and Entertainment. Its collection spans from two hundred years ago to the present day, which is not only a good place to check out the collections of vintage bikes, and it's also a spacious venue for all kinds of events.
google avatar

Jeni P.

Yelp
Hidden gem 10 minutes from my house. How did I not know about you? Even though I didn't grow up in the Valley, I loved all of the cool, iconic items they had and appreciated the explanation provided. I could relate to the vintage bikes, music and food. Loved playing the arcade games. Huge blast from the past. Gift shop is just the right size with a wide assortment of items. Free parking. As of 8-29-2021 they are only open on weekends, 11am-4pm. Purchased tickets online, got there when they opened, went to lunch after. Fun day with friends who grew up in the area, remembered many of the places and got to relive their childhood.

Maria H.

Yelp
Took the family here and we all had a great time looking at the historical items from the Valley and playing some of the arcade games!

Linda A.

Yelp
Great fun. Like a trip back to my growing up in the valley. They have a Thomas Edison disk player with no discs. I will donate a few on my next visit.
google avatar

Marie D.

Yelp
Fun museum housing items from bygone Valley hangouts, as well as memorabilia from LA and Hollywood too. I had a lot of fun checking it out on a Sunday morning before it got busy. I especially loved the Family Fun Arcade sign and all the video games, which were a blast from my past. Staff were friendly and helpful. Easy parking, clean restrooms, nifty little gift shop. We bought our tickets at the museum, rather than online, and saved ourselves the processing fees.
google avatar

Jacqueline S.

Yelp
An important part of history- this great museum packs so much aviation, local lore, BMX bikes and cars built in the Valley into a hanger next to the Van Nuys airport. We were lucky to talk to a knowledgeable Lockheed engineer, a docent for this museum that answered more of our questions and made history come alive! Must See!

Frank F.

Yelp
I recently went with 8 family members. I was disappointed, the only part on the museum with A/C was the entrance where the cashier is located. The hanger looks bigger from the outside. As the walk around looking at the dusty, unkept, with no A/C exhibit room the extreme heat makes rush through. The retro signs does make you remember your childhood and the different businesses that are no longer open. The items appeared to be donated are from little known actors but for a few exceptions. There donations boxes throughout the museum.
google avatar

Mellinda M.

Yelp
Very cool place full of nostalgic items. Such a gem. Go check it out. Who would've thought this place in the middle of nowhere would turn out to be a fun little road trip.

Jonah W.

Yelp
It's not so much a museum, but a mish-mash of random stuff. Some of the signs are fun, and there's some history shared, but it misses major Valley cultural touchstones. No reference to Valley Girl, the filming of ET, the movie studios in the Valley, Van Nuys Blvd. cruising in the 60s, the Brady Bunch House, Karate Kid's influence on the Valley, etc. A decent presentation in places, but an overall miss as a museum.

Kenneth A.

Yelp
This is a very cute assemblage of signs and memorabilia regarding the San Fernando Valley, CA. It's worth a visit, once. Plan on about an hour, tops, to see the collection.
google avatar

Kimberly E.

Yelp
We had our high school reunion there and what a fab place to have it‼ all of the iconic signs were lit up, lots of memorabilia too‼it's a nice big room, and people who work there are helpful, it's a must see ‼

Richard B.

Yelp
Fun if you're nostalgic and have been around the area for a long time. Good to visit at least once but I was told they change the displays periodically.

Scott F.

Yelp
I wanted to love this museum, being a history aficionado, however this museum is more of an antique market than a curated museum. The price of $15 per person is way too high for the experience. The fact that a few arcade games are free doesn't make up for the admission cost. It's located in a terrible part of the valley, forget about grabbing a bite to eat anywhere nearby. There is no rhyme or reason to how the items are presented and the staff could barely be bothered to acknowledge our presence. They definitely need a docent and someone who is able to organize the items, some of which are very interesting.

Kacin S.

Yelp
Great hidden gem. If you haven't seen it you should! My wife dragged me to go and by the time it was time to leave should had to pull me out. Brought back so many memories.
google avatar

Christopher B.

Yelp
I walked inside this place and I was immediately swept away. It takes you on a journey. A journey that really cant be explained any other way other than a time capsule. It's legendary. You can go here and feel like you are in any year you choose. I recommend that you bring your kids here but its also a perfect date for someone who is new to LA. This is a true gem.
google avatar

Cici G.

Yelp
Very cool museum, especially if you grew up in the Valley. After browsing everything, you can play free pinball and video games! They have a little store with some neat shirts and souvenirs of past businesses. It was a little difficult to find. Even though it has a Balboa address, you cannot find it on Balboa. You need to enter on Stagg.

E. K.

Yelp
Such a great collection of old valley and LA-area artifacts. They even have old arcade games that you can play for free. I just wish they had skee ball because arcades keep getting rid of skee ball.
google avatar

Joleen K.

Yelp
I love Americana! I even used to own some of the vintage McDonald's toys they had on display. It's easy to miss from the street but there is plenty of parking inside. Once you get in, it looks pretty small with two rooms but it took me about an hour to look at everything. There are bright neon signs for a good photo opp!
google avatar

Tom G.

Yelp
We were really pleased with our visit to the museum and enjoyed all the different exhibits. It really took us down memory lane in so many different areas, from movies and restaurants to skateboarding, cars and BMX. The gift shop is really cool too.
google avatar

Michael S.

Yelp
What a find. Great place to visit and a good overall collection. It's like a stroll down memory lane. There was a little bit of everything in the relics. The staff was friendly and helpful and the collection was fun, informative, and eclectic.
google avatar

Daniel W.

Yelp
Utterly delightful! Cool historical items (especially neon and elhemeria) bring back lots of memories. Well presented and the people there are actually happy to tell you more about the history behind the objects. This is clearly a labor of love--and one that's a joy to visit! Well worth the visit for any Angelino, or those interested in LA history and design!
google avatar

Tabitha B.

Yelp
Very fun museum packed with a lot of Los Angeles history! Original matchboxes, neon signs, merchandise, promotional products, dioramas, vehicles, arcade cabinets, and more from some of the most iconic Los Angeles and San Fernando Hotels, Establishments, Celebrities, and Classic American Brands. Seeing signs like the Cobalt Cafe's and De Soto Pharmacy strikes a ton of nostalgia for myself, I'm sure quite frankly anybody could come here and feel this warm jolt of nostalgia a handful of times it's a gift that keeps giving to visit and make memories here but remember old one's too..I cannot wait to come back and take my family to visit :)

Jon S.

Yelp
A blast from the past! As a true Valley Relic, can't say enough about this museum. Wonderful cross section of SFV history, culture and trivia . Great displays of memorabilia from movies including horror, cowboy, action, and a variety of other genres. Best of all, all kinds of playable vintage video games included in the admission. The New York Times was right! Don't miss this little gem.
google avatar

Yelp
Movie memorabilia & neon, how can you go wrong?! I was driving from NorCal to San Diego and this was a great spot to stop and take a break. I went through within an hour due to time restrictions, could have easily spent another hour there. Plenty of parking, two on site bathrooms, & a Gift shop. They host events as well, (just missed seeing Charles Phoenix) Definitely recommend taking the time to check this place out!
google avatar

Heather U.

Yelp
Really cool location! I came to this venue for an event and it was very spacious and had lots of antique gadgets here.
google avatar

Chris I.

Yelp
Had a nice visit to the Valley Relics Museum today. Enjoyed going down memory lane. A lot to see from Aviation to the Movie stars and business of the past. The sign collect was really nice. Great place to visit and pass some time

Yelp
This place brings me joy and fills me with nostalgia every time I go inside. I am so grateful that such tremendous effort is being put into preserving San Fernando Valley history! The Valley Relics Museum is a must-see for anyone who ever called the San Fernando Valley "home". You'll be amazed what interesting history The Valley has, and how this museum is preserving that history so nicely for generations to come.
