"A Tex-Mex restaurant has closed suddenly in the North Loop neighborhood. Vamonos’s last day of service at 4807 Airport Boulevard was sometime in mid-February. Shawn Cirkiel, the owner and main chef of Vamonos’s parent company Parkside Projects, confirmed the shutter to Eater Austin." - Nadia Chaudhury

"Austin chef Shawn Cirkiel turned his attention to Tex-Mex with his latest restaurant, which took the place of his old Spanish tapas spot Bullfight. A great spot in the neighborhood! The staff here is very friendly and the food is always so fresh! I love their habanero salsa and I recommend trying the power bowl! Super healthy and so much flavor! The best texmex spot around! This time we also tried the nachos and I was very impressed. The salads are also a great option and they come with a fantastic dressing.

Google
We can't speak highly enough of vamonos. We are critical and continually come back. We love the fresh chips and salsa and ask for the habanerno when we sit down - it goes nicely with their table salsa. I ordered the chicken burrito, which I loved and took half home. My boyfriend ordered the pablos plato and he loved it. The multiple sauces made the dish exciting! The service is also great. We highly recommend!

Google
Great Mexican martinis. They do some things really well. Great nachos. I really like their enchiladas and there are lovely sweet people who work there. It's a great Happy Hour too! Give it a try if you haven't. They have easy parking too

Google
Lovely experience with such friendly service. Excellent real margaritas on the rocks, flavorful rex mex style. Wow come for happy hour and the servings are generous for just $5-$6 (half off apps) get the delicious queso w ground beef and roasted poblano, a couple huge tacquitos surrounded by Mexican Caesar salad, guacamole and or stuffed chicken quesadillas with side fixins. Look forward to coming back for the mains! Our server was more than gracious. Every single day happy hour 4 to 6.

Google
My family loves Vamonos! Great outdoor seating for families with kids under 11 years old who cannot be vaccinated yet. The salsa, tortillas, and skirt steak are phenomenal. It is top-tier TexMex. I dug in before I took the pictures. This is a place to try if you haven't yet and a place to return if it have. This is not a big deal but our only issue today is that the outdoor fans are loud so the waitstaff, which was excellent, may need to repeat themselves often because the fans are drowning them out. But please keep the fans on when it's 90+ degrees...they are a necessity.

We had a LocalBuzz foodie meet up here the other day and now Vamonos is where I’m coming for my next happy hour. The inside is so colorful, filled with fairy lights, plants and candles to set the mood. I actually thoroughly enjoyed the authentic Mexican music that they played, it definitely elevated the experience. I went for a classic Margarita on the rocks and I will honestly say that it was one of the best I’ve had in a while! I loved the chips and salsa, because you could tell that it was made in house and with great care. The chicken quesadilla was pretty good, super cheesy and fulfilling. I can’t wait to come back and try everything else!

Google
This place is good, can't wait to go again! I had the Pablo's Plate - two tacos and two enchiladas with rice and beans. For the tacos, went with skirt steak and carnitas. Both were real delicious but the carnitas was the better of the two. For my enchiladas, went with one beef and one chicken. The chicken enchilada is like one of the best I have ever had and I have had a lot of enchiladas in my time. Highly recommend the tacos AND enchiladas. The beans were also amazing. The queso was average though but that may be because we have so many options in the area. Drink wise, I went with the prickly pear margarita which was refreshing. Wish they sold shirts because I would totally get one. Looking forward to going next time to try different tacos.

Google
The food here is disgusting! I went on Thursday like 10min after they opened and ordered the beef enchiladas. Bad idea! The food wasn’t hot, more like luke warm, the enchiladas had like a weird sweet taste, almost like tomato paste or ketchup. I took two bites and threw my napkin over the plate. I tried to get full from the tortilla chips. Ugh I’ve passed by the place many times and never noticed it. A few of my coworkers said the parking lot is never full which should have been a red flag.

Yelp
Where to go for Mexican food...Vamanos! The salsas, guacamole and queso are as good as the margaritas! Happy hour is amazing, but crowded. The porch out back is covered, and I'm sure it's delightful if it ever gets cool again. The inside is casual, yet the food is presented with flair and some flavors I was not expecting...what they do adds just the sparkle I need! There are many vegetarian options. The elote is outstanding and beautiful served. The tacos are creative, and I loved the shrimp and redfish. Lots of meat for the carnivores too! We will be returning often!

Yelp
Poblano enchiladas are my new favorite Tex-Mex dish Food: They start off with roasted salsa & in house tortilla chips - delicious. The waitress kindly gave us additional salsa choices but they were not good (one tasted store bought, another was a bland mole and the other had mango & sugar taste). The Pablo's plate with 2 skirt steak tacos dorados aka hard shell and poblano chile enchiladas was a smart delicious choice. I never had poblano enchiladas before only red mole, but so happy the waitress recommended. They were cheesy, flavorsome and perfect heat. Skirt steak dorado tacos were juicy and seasoned well. The skirt steak soft taco was not as yummy because the tortilla was undercooked / falling apart. I enjoyed the refried beans (no pork manteca) over the charro beans (has pork) & rice needed more flavor. Don Pedro grilled green onions were delicious Drinks: margarita on the rocks is definitely 100% blue agave tequila and they were not shy to give you some extra juju - worth every sip! Horchata did not taste homemade and was on the milkier side with no real canela zest Environment: It was a cute small place with cultural and flamboyant decor. The bright colors made it vibrant & more spacious looking. Inside seating had AC and different seating arrangements Service: our waitress was attentive, kind and helpful when explaining the menu / offering recommendations. Everyone was friendly Overall: the poblano enchiladas and skirt steak dorados were delicious plus wash it down with a margarita is the way to go

Carolyn A.

Yelp
The most flavorful Chilaquiles I've ever eaten. So tasty and well seasoned - I discovered whole garlic cloves had been used to make this dish even more savory than those of other restaurants. Totally in love with Vamanos.

Hannah L.

Yelp
This is my first time visiting this restaurant! The experience was very lovely and the service was amazing. Ambiance: There is a medium noise level and it is well-lit inside with the string lights and all the windows. There is plenty of seating tables, chairs, booth bench. Service: The serves constantly check up on you and they are all very friendly and accommodating!! Chicken Tacos: The chicken was very flavorful and had a nice char on it. I liked the flavor of the chicken but pickled onions are not particularly my favorite. Moreover, the tacos were a good portion size and overall tasty. Salsa and Chips: The salsa was very flavorful but a little too spicy for me. The chips were also very crispy and I really liked them! Overall, a good experience!! Good service and good food, definitely check it out if you are in the area.

Tracey J.

Yelp
This place was super mediocre. There was nothing terrible about the experience: service was good, the restaurant wasn't crowded at 7 PM on a Saturday night, the food came out hot. It's just that nothing was super impressive either. My friend and I ordered the Don Pedro and Backyard Vegetables grilled platters. Both dishes tasted very underwhelming/somewhat bland. You don't need to go to a restaurant to enjoy this standard of flavor as there was nothing unique or special about it. We were also pretty disappointed that they didn't have any ceviche available when that was the main thing on the menu that each of us was looking forward to. One thing we did really enjoy was the delicious salsa. However, based on everything else being super mediocre, I don't have any motivation to pass up other places on my "Places to Eat" list to dine here a second time.

Ashley N.

Yelp
4 stars - Overpriced Queso I've been to this restaurant twice now, and I must say, their consistency is commendable. My overall assessment at Mexican restaurants generally revolves around their queso; which did not disappoint in flavor. However, as a non-meat eater, I requested a queso without beef. Typically, excluding meat lowers the cost, as it's usually an add-on. To my surprise, when I received the bill, the queso was priced the same as if it had meat, leaving me disappointed. Most Mexican restaurants in the area charge $6-8 for a bowl of queso, whereas theirs was $10. Aside from this, I thoroughly enjoyed their delicious salsa and the superb red snapper tacos. To top it off, the waiter/bartender made me a delightful margarita to complement the meal.

Yelp
After UT game, bro and I decided we needed real food so I yelped restaurants in the area and this one just sounded right (as a Spanish teacher a fave word of mine lol) and after our lunch was very glad we chose it. I ordered the chicken enchiladas w poblano crema and bro got the tacos w 3 different meats. Rice was fluffy as ricr should be and beans were good. As it was a weird time 330ish we didnt wait long for service. Our waitress was nice and helpful. The place was very cute and bar looked inviting. Oh and the limon agua fresca was so fresh! I live far away so dont know if logistically I could return but if I lived near I would go here a lot!

Tom K.

Yelp
We all really enjoyed our experience at Vanos! Service, food, and atmosphere were quite welcoming! We are looking forward to returning soon!

Mariah K.

Yelp
So yummy! Went on a Saturday for lunch around 1pm and it was pretty empty. The staff were WONDERFUL! One of my party members wanted coffee and the server went out of his way to make him a pot of coffee! So nice of them. We went because I wanted a taco salad and I saw reviews. It was really great! We are definitely coming back since they have really good deals for happy hour (everyday!).

Clark C.

Yelp
Reviewing from perspective as a W from Santa Ana, California where we have Mexican food possibly more authentic than San Antonio's south side? (see other reviewer) Vamonos is certainly above average Mexican food. Their Margarita is very nice and the guacamole is slightly chunky while still smooth and very tasty. The Chicken Adobo was excellent. On a Saturday evening there were mostly caucasians dining, but no one was talking about the National Review. I doubt anyone there that night would even know what it is. There was a Hispanic couple and a mixed couple, but does that even matter? It's a satisfying restaurant and I recommend you try it for yourself.

janet b.

Yelp
Food only serviceable. Staff very friendly. Too noisy. I have tried this place numerous times hoping it would be better.

Matt J.

Yelp
This place was amazing just had lunch with friends while traveling through and it was awesome. I'll be back. 2-3 minutes off of I-35 and loved it. Everything was good. Chips and salsa, queso, Pablo's plate, rice and charro beans and more.

Tana L.

Yelp
Good food but pricey and we were a little caught off guard at the end of our meal...the waitress brought the card reader so we could pay and took it away when the "tip" option came up and then gave it back. She selected her own tip for the dinner which we just felt was really rude. Look, we love to tip and especially for excellent service but in this instance we didn't even get the option - we won't return most likely.

Lauren M.

Yelp
tried this one out since we were in the area...don't regret it but probably won't go back. checked it off the bookmarked list on here. ;) it was quiet; maybe 3 other tables were being served. Service was quick and waiters were friendly. We got the pastor tacos (pictured) and the flautas (not pictured). The tacos were just ok but the flautas were amazing!! If i was in the area i miiight go back for those. cons: $3 soda that was a little flat and $2.50 for a tablespoon size of extra crema ...seems a little excessive.

Kelly A.

Yelp
I used to come here a lot last year and the customer service was much better. I'm writing this review NOW because I just sat outside on the patio (with a dog) for almost 30 minutes before anyone came to take my order. And it wasn't a server who finally saw me. The food has always been just okay. I come for the margaritas and location. It's a nice, little dog friendly spot.

Guy H.

Yelp
Everything was fantastic. The food was incredible and the restaurant is super cute. Drinks were awesome too.

Sonal G.

Yelp
I feel like a lot of places don't do free chips and salsa at the beginning of your meal anymore, and that's always been my favorite part of going to a Mexican restaurant. So I was thrilled to get the tasty chips and salsa at the beginning of my meal here and the really tasty and unique prickly pear marg that I thoroughly enjoyed. I honestly don't remember the food all that much, but I remember a really relaxed vibe in the outside area with fans above for when it gets hot, and also a nice indoor area as well. Service was fast and friendly as well. I remember the food being pretty good, and my husband enjoyed it as well. There are vegetarian options which sometimes gets hard at Mexican places, but lots of fresh veggies along with well seasoned beans and rice. Yum! Will be back for happy hour.

Yelp
Absolutely LOVED their happy hour!! Almost everything was half off. Good margs and food, will definitely come back :)

Hollis W.

Yelp
Service was really great. Our older waiter was really caring for our family. I regret not getting his name but we tipped well as the service was really great. The food was great. Frozen margs were FROZEN AND DELICIOUS. It was pretty sparse in there on a Sunday afternoon after church. I'm looking forward to the next time in Austin to swing by this little place.

Joyce H.

Yelp
Not your typical Tex Mex! My favorite is the grilled redfish. The fish is perfectly prepared and seasoned, served with grilled onions and peppers. I love the charro beans too. The smaller serving was perfect for my friend and I to share for lunch. Attentive service. No blaring music. Perfect

Jack G.

Yelp
I came here with family that was visiting in town and we really enjoyed this spot! There was a decent amount of indoor seating, so we didn't have to roast on the porch (though it looked like the shade and fan placements out there would have been adequate). The food was quite good! My chicken enchiladas were moist throughout and I enjoyed the green sauce. I especially enjoyed the chips and salsa while we waited for our food, and our server was kind enough to offer us complementary Sopaipillas after our meal. Surprisingly there's a lot of very mediocre Tex-Mex to be found in Austin, so when you find a place with some quality you remember it. I'll be back!

Yelp
Great food and staff always.................what else is there to say? Go to Vamonos. ................

Tess D.

Yelp
Atmosphere = 4.5 Beautiful ambiance, music is a bit loud, smells amazing!! Seasoning = 5 The food is seasoned to perfection. We noticed excellent spices in the guac, meats, and elotes. The elotes were good!!! Service = 5 Seat yourself but they find you quickly. The kitchen is a little slow but it's very obvious why. Here on a Sunday night and it was quite packed. Drinks = 4.5 Only had the frozen Paloma. It was delicious but had a very distinct taste making it appear they added something extra. Almost too sweet. Food = 4 Had beef, chicken, and shrimp fajitas. All were beautifully spiced as aforementioned, however, all proteins were tough. Tasted as tho they cooked everything too quickly on too high a heat. All ingredients tasted very fresh. Will definitely return for a second impression!

Harrison K.

Yelp
Excellent all around Tex Mex, great staples without a lot of fluff. Free chips and salsa! Not crowded either a little hidden spot on Airport.

Diana H.

Yelp
Nothing really worked out for us, starting with the ceviche, which no one ate -- looked and tasted like it was sitting around too long and not at all fresh. The beef tacos were bland, the fish tacos were so spicy that they were inedible, doused in hot sauce. My grilled veggies were pretty good, though I would have liked larger pieces. They were finely chopped and a bit overcooked, but tasty. I also loved the house salsa! Loud music made it hard to talk.

Angela G.

Yelp
I went to Vamonos with a big group on a weekday during lunch. They have two decent sized parking lots on either side. The free chips and salsa was a great starter and decently spicy as well. The wait times in between ordering and getting the food was quite long (we spend 1.5 hours there). I got the veggie enchilada with salsa verde. The portion sizes were huge and very filling, though the veggies were a bit bland.

Robin A.

Yelp
Pretty good Mexican food. The chips and salsa were good and they had options for the vegans and health-conscious people in our group. If you go with a big group and they bring you the credit card machine with the total and various tip amounts, be aware that they have already added a 20% tip to your bill and dont accidentally double tip like we did. The food was good though and we will definitely go back.

Brenna L.

Yelp
Pretty good place - quick service, kind staff, not too busy on the times I've been. The food is a 7/10 for me but I've generally enjoyed what I've ordered and don't feel it's too heavy or unhealthy.

Willie A.

Yelp
Friends decided to go here on Friday night. I'm glad they did. Sat outside but it was still warm because of the great heaters they have set up. Service was good although the chips and salsa could've been filled faster. I had Pablo's Plato and it was fantastic. Be sure you order it with the pablano cream sauce.

Diane K.

Yelp
Taco Tuesday, need I say more. But, Puffy taco Tuesday makes it the best Taco Tuesday in town! These puffy tacos remind me of San Antonio style Mexican food. And these tacos were filled to the brim with Piccadillo. My husband had the grilled fish fillet. It had a good Oak smoke. It was really-really good! In fact, I gave him a puffy taco in exchange for some of his fish, like a buffet! Dogs are allowed on the patio, the reason why we dined here.

Rolando N.

Yelp
The puffy tacos are like mana from Heaven. On Taco Tuesday's you get your choice of chicken or picadillo filled tacos plus rice and beans. The picadillo tacos are incredible. It starts with the homemade puffy corn tortilla and then just builds from there with perfectly spiced beef, fresh lettuce, tomatoes and shaved jack cheese. Awesome flavors. The ranch queso is also a must. One of the best quesos I ever tasted. Service was prompt and friendly!

Amy G.

Yelp
I don't know Vamonos why never caught my attention before. Maybe I thought it was just another taco stand. It came up when I was trying to find tex-mex restaurants with patios, to take advantage of the spring weather that's finally here. We ordered some tacos and enchiladas, tortilla soup, salad, and corn. The beef on the tacos was outstanding! Chicken tortilla soup was generous on the toppings. Sauces and salsa were mild, which I appreciate. Everything else was average. The corn wasn't worth getting again. All-in-all, I've got another place to add to my list of favorites.

Ryan R.

Yelp
Great spot to check out for some Tex-mex and margaritas! The nachos turned out amazing, each chip equally as loaded as the others, ample amount of bean & cheese on each! The quesadillas were also a good pick, simple but predictably good! Started with a regular frozen margarita and went for a frozen prickly pear for Rd 2. Both are great, would definitely recommend the frozen over the rocks margarita. Super refreshing on both and great for the upcoming summer days.

Mary K.

Yelp
Vamonos has a expansive menu. Everything is fresh and the meat they use in their dishes is upscale. I've been to the restaurant twice and had food delivered many times. You won't be disappointed.

Jerry H.

Yelp
RIPOFF ALERT!!! What a surprise delivered to us at the end of the meal (after waiting over 15 minutes to get the check after I asked for it). In addition to a bogus 1.5% "Wellness Fee", they'd tacked on a 20% MANDATORY tip, AFTER tax (I don't recall the tax man providing any service) and "Welllness Fee". My wife and I were there with my son, his wife and their two small children. It wasn't even a big party of people. NOWHERE in the restaurant-not on the menu, not on any signs, NOWHERE was their anything to alert us to this "policy". Anyway, the food was average and overpriced. The waitress was nice but spilled a glass of water all over our table and then disappeared for 15 minutes after I asked for the check. There are SO MANY better options for Tex-Mex than this place. We won't be back and advise other Yelpers to watch out for the Vamonos RIP-OFF. To them I say, Adios!

Allison C.

Yelp
Vamonos is one of my go to place for Tex-Mex. They have both covered patio seating and indoor seating with plenty of options for different party sizes. The blue and pink theme is super cute and definitely adds to the ambience. The complimentary chips and salsa is one of the best I've ever had. The salsa is smoky and rich without the normal acidity from other tomato salsas. I usually order the Pablito's platter. It's definitely enough food to fill me up especially with the family style beans and rice that comes with it. The only reason why I'm docking a star is because in my experience service is a little slow.

Shveta M.

Yelp
I don't know what took me so long to try all the delish bites at Vamonos but better late than never right? We had the chicken enchiladas, fish tacos and the prickly pear margaritas and I'd highly recommend any and all of those! The poblano cream sauce on the enchiladas is to die for and I'd bathe in it if I could. The prickly pear margaritas are frozen and a must. Like order one tonight! I don't care if it's cold outside lol. They're craveable and one of the best frozen margaritas I've had!

Sharla M.

Yelp
I've never written a review but, I have to rave on Vamonos. Such caring and attentive staff. Quick and delicious service.

Karen S.

Yelp
Delicious food & great service. Wonderful cocktails too... & the salsas are amazing wow!! we always try to visit Vamanos when we are in Austin. Wish there was one here in the SF Bay Area.

Spring L.

Yelp
Great margaritas and the best queso in town. What more do you need? Vamonos now................

John M.

Yelp
Its nice to walk into a joint and know whats coming. Service is always above and beyond. Food is always fresh and hot. We both have our set dishes these days. Wife with Beef Chiladas, double Rice....Mine is the Pablitos Plate with Chicken Chilada with Poblano Sauce and a Red Fish Taco...and in my opinion....Best in Town. I switch up between Charro and Refried....both are excellent. Rice is always good. And this round I added the Elotes which was outstanding. I always recommend Vamonos when people ask where to get great Tex-mex food. The consistency of the food and the service is what keeps us coming back.

Dip D.

Yelp
Great place food was delicious, we had fish tacos which had a great smoky flavor. The bartender Justin was really cool, made great drinks including a mocktail, service was great.

Karson S.

Yelp
While in desperate search for some white queso in Austin, we came upon Vamonos. And glad we did! We arrived on a Friday night & were seated immediately on the patio. Our first stop was the queso, of course. It was a $10 queso, but it lasted the 2 of us through 2 chip bags (intermittent with their special somewhat smoky salsa, which was delightful). One note, our waitress was the STAR of the show - she was SO nice to us, recommended her favorite menu item (which was AMAZING), and even gave us some tips for our next visit. The food: Pros: Chicken enchiladas with poblano sauce - the BEST. White queso was actually white queso (which is what we've been trying to find), salsa was different and great Cons: soda refills are not free (but our waitress very politely let us know before we ordered more), the beans a little soupy, the queso was a little overwhelmed with peppers/pepper flavor

Patricia R.

Yelp
Had our husband birthday celebration at Vámonos Restaurant and it was incredible good! We had a really great time with friends and family with the best food, attention and care from our waitress and the best manager in town Mr Chris M. Food is fantastic and there is not any place with the best queso dip with chips !!! 100 % recommended!!!

William M.

Yelp
The food was only TexMex and not authentic Mexican food. I was good but not great. Service was adequate.

Hannah V.

Yelp
I would give this place a 2.5 if that was an option. The food is ok, the frozen margarita was good, the service was ok, however, see picture for an idea of portions- I ordered the Tacos Al Pastor and got three tacos with one small spoonful of the meat on each, with a side of rice and beans, and I paid $14 for that. The tacos were pretty standard, nothing special. And the day I went, the chips seemed maybe a bit stale, something was off. Overall, I wouldn't recommend this place, except maybe to get one margarita during happy hour, but outside of happy hour, they are $10 for a fairly small cup, so again, not the best value. For similar price but better portion sizes and food taste, try El Chile on Manor.

Stacey T.

Yelp
Food arrived cold and just not very flavorful. Service was very slow and the music on the patio was so loud, I don't think our server was able to hear us. Just not that great and kinda of pricey for that.

Anthony M.

Yelp
From the restaurant group that brought you Backspace, Olive & June, and Parkside brings you a tex-mex concept with ¡Vamonos! that takes inspiration from ranches across Texas where vaqueros and cowboys sat down together, sharing a table and a hot meal off a wood burning grill to bring you simple food done well. I got: - The Skirt Steak: great flavor of the steak. It comes from 44 Farms, so you know it's high quality. They also grill the steak over oak and wow! I love that. The wood flavor with the rich chewy meat made for a fun dish to have and my favorite dish here! - Chicken Enchiladas: this comes filled with shredded chicken and topped with Oaxaca and jack cheese, poblano cream, and green salsa. A classic tex-mex dish, can't go wrong here. - Nachos Ignacio: they house-make their own crispy tortilla bases, top them off with beans, Oaxaca and jack cheese, pickled jalapeño, and picadillo (beef). These were a fun snack to munch on before the meals came out. - Ranch Style Queso Blanco: white American cheese, poblano peppers, piccadilly beef, guacamole all come together to bring you a light, yet flavorful queso that'll have you wanting more. - Elotes: Mexican street corn with chili power, mayo, lime, queso fresco, cream - this is a classic must-have. Great creamy flavor. - Agua Fresca: my favorite drink. It's simple: water, lime, sugar. Great, refreshing way to compliment the meal. All in all, I had a great time here. Inside there's vibrant, bright decor and they have an outdoor shaded patio. They play classic cumbia music that reminds me of childhood when my mom always played this music on the radio. I give them an 4/5 for being great.

Jonathan E.

Yelp
Food was really good. Service was poor. Never got napkins, utensils. Also overpriced. Massive burrito with multiple items runs $15. Three small street tacos are a dollar less. Jack & cokes are $9.50 each. $30 for 3 drinks is a bit steep for the location.
