Remembering Loretta Lynn’s Cookbook ‘You’re Cookin’ It Country’ | Eater

"A coal-mining workplace where her father labored during the Great Depression, leaving the family in deep poverty that shaped a hard-scrabble, working-class identity reflected in the subject’s cooking and songs. With her mother raising eight children while her father toiled in the mine, she was pushed into early marriage and learned to feed a large family on a tight budget, developing inexpensive, nourishing dishes such as vegetable soup and fried catfish. Those formative hardships and practical recipes later informed a 2004 cookbook of hearty Appalachian comfort food—rich chicken and dumplings, tender buttermilk biscuits, banana pudding with oven-browned meringue, and peach cobbler—that celebrate the economy, taste, and resilience of home cooking." - Amy McCarthy

Very informative guided tour! Two floors worth of exhibits. Very good value as it was only a $5.00 admission fee. Very well worth it! The tour was approximately 1 hour long.

This place is definitely worth a stop. So much history to see and the folks who run it are very knowledgeable and friendly. Around an hour for a complete tour and being able to see everything.

Incredible place that you need to stop by! The building itself is one of the original buildings from the movie Coal Miners Daughter. Inside you'll get a glimpse of what it was like living during those times. Great Place, Great People!!!

They have quite a bit here. I visited during the Van Lear Festival and received something of a private tour. It is very close to Butcher Hollow, Loretta Lynn's Homeplace so it is easy to stop by and check this place out.

Very interesting museum featuring Loretta Lynn and coal mining memorabilia. There are 3 floors, no elevator, so be prepared for stairs. Loretta's Home opens for inside tours in May. We went in April, so only got to see the outside.

This place was not even open and when you call the number for information no one answers the phone. A reliable source advice me that there had been numerous calls to find about touring with no results. This was a very big disappointment especially when there was so much traffic of visitors on the busiest week they would possible have due all the visitors coming to the area that wanted to add the historic center to the visit to learn more about the rich history

Yelp
I'd like to know what this place has about federal mine inspector Bill Spradlin. He was my grandfather.

Yelp
My family and I stopped here on our way to see the homeplace of Loretta Lynn and Crystal Gayle. We opted to stop at the museum. It close to closing time but they were nice to give a tour. It was only $5 per person and there was three of us. This place is located out in the middle of no where. Not enough advertisement on the place. If in the area, stop by and check them out.

Yelp
Stopped here passing through eastern Ky. The museum tour is $5 and we were told it would take 20 minute, but the amiable guide gave us a 40 minute tour that a was step into the past. Not just coal, but the entire way of life. While I wouldn't go out of my way to drive to Van Lear, if you are nearby this is worth seeing. Finally, while not a fan of country music, I did enjoy Coal Miner's Daughter and a quick visit to the nearby cabin, on a hill, in Butcher Holler is also worth a visit.
