This is one of probably a dozen Van Leeuwen locations in Manhattan. Back in the day I used to follow the original Van Leeuwen ice cream truck when it was a single truck parked on the corner of Astor Place in East Village on certain days and in Brooklyn on others. When I first tried their earl grey and hazelnut flavors, I knew they were on to something. From then on whenever I was in the area and it was more than 50 degrees out I'd look forward to grabbing a sweet creamy treat.
When friends visited I would take them to the truck, their eyes would light up when trying that earl grey. Their flavors were both traditional and novel. As they expanded I excitedly saw the number of trucks increase and soon they had stand alone stores, were being stocked at Whole Foods, then smaller bodegas, then even Target! Fast forward to now their ice cream is carried in grocery stores nationwide.
I still love their earl grey. Their prices have gone up like everything else, but their flavors are still terrific. Love their vegan options too they taste very much like real ice cream, and it's cool that they have so many flavors. Not sure that the quality control is a good as when they were just a few trucks, inevitably the texture is harder to control when you're packing and shipping to so many retailers.
