Upscale Ice Cream Spot Van Leeuwen Is Opening Three Scoop Shops in Boston | Eater Boston

"This scoop shop, opening inside The Street at Chestnut Hill this spring, is an outpost of a national chain with more than 50 locations. It leans on expertly executed classics—think vanilla bean and Sicilian pistachio—offers notable vegan ice creams, and periodically debuts playful, stunt-y limited-edition flavors (recent examples include Kraft cheese and Hidden Valley ranch)." - Erika Adams

Google
Passion fruit sorbet was very sour yet incredibly tasty. Loved it. All the flavors we got (mint chocolate and Italian hazelnut) were delicious and big scoop. Staff was nice and friendly.

Google
I came here from a friend’s recommendation. However I was disappointed. The ice cream was too sweet and loaded with additional items, like cheesecake, and cookies. If you like kitchen sink ice cream this is the place to go. However they lack in the simple flavor department. In addition with New England being the homeland of ice cream, you need to churn in house. This place will fall out of favor when the next chain moves in.

Google
Their ice cream is very creamy and delicious. My favorite combo is the peanut butter brownie honeycomb and Sicilian pistachio. Chef's kiss!

Google
Great service and a lovely location! And great variety of flavors. Made my day!

Google
We got pistachio and honeycomb flavors. The pistachio is very nutty and rich in flavor! Plus, They are very generous on the scoop. Will try other summer specials next time.

Google
Love how nice everyone is and their flavors are outstanding and so unique! My daughter loved Black Cherry Chip and my seasonal favorite is Strawberry Yuzu Cheesecake

Google
I recently checked out Van Leeuwen and it was such a delightful experience! Their homemade ice creams are incredibly creamy, with fun flavors. I got honeycomb and brown sugar cookie dough and it was very yummy. The staff are super friendly and the interior is great for taking pictures, with bright colors and decor. Highly recommended.

Google
We love the ice cream flavors here! Best treat on any day of the week :)

Yelp
Cute, upbeat shop with stools and tables. Interesting flavors. Cheerful and helpful counter staff. But it just feels like it's more about marketing than about love of ice cream. Ho-hum texture (a little icy and not at all creamy), ho-hum flavor (a little chemical-y), and a bit expensive compared to other shops, without any of the artisanal touches. The hot fudge on the side was thin but good. Think of it as the Pop Up Bagels of ice cream.

Yelp
I was on the mean streets of chestnut hill after doing some shopping and having lunch I thought I would have desert . The strawberry cheesecake ice cream was excellent with bits of crust mixed in. They have a number of choices for flavors and I noticed a few vegan options. Service was fast and clean inside

Yelp
Went to Van Leeuwen for the first time, and although it is pricey, I've got to say some of the flavors are very unique and yummy! Went on a quiet weekday afternoon and the lady behind the counter was very nice and offered that I can sample any flavors that I'd like. I liked that they had metal spoons as their sampling spoons so that I don't have to feel bad about wasting wooden or plastic sample spoons like you typically see elsewhere. I sampled 4 flavors and thought they were all really yummy (Honeycomb, Earl Grey Tea, Mango Sticky Rice, and Blue Jasmine Passion Fruit Swirl). I ended up getting a medium (2 scoops) of Mango Sticky Rice and Blue Jasmine Passion Fruit Swirl, both of which are new Spring seasonal flavors that they released the beginning of this past week. She also surprised me with the Free Topping Tuesday! So I was able to add any 1 topping I wanted for free, so of course I chose hot fudge! The Mango Sticky Rice had subtle hints of mango, condensed milk, and the aftertaste I typically get after eating the mango sticky rice dessert. The blue jasmine was really nice since it had a strong jasmine tea flavor with a some fragrant flowery hints combined with fruitiness from the passion fruit. They also have some tables in the back as well as some counter seats. The price was pretty steep--nearly $9 with tax for 2 scoops that were pretty small. But otherwise, great taste and unique flavors! I would come back just for these seasonal flavors. What I ordered: -Medium Mango Sticky Rice and Blue Jasmine Passion Fruit Swirl in a Cup with Hot Fudge

Yelp
" Honeycomb Heaven " Went in for some ice cream ; particularly the honey comb it's just delicious. A little piece of heaven in your mouth . It does really taste like " Dulce de leche ". The service is friendly. The vibe is welcoming . This place is the latest establishment opened in my neighborhood besides 7-11. No harm in getting ice cream late at night ; lol.

Yelp
We went to Van Leeuwen Ice Cream for the first time last night and it was actually AMAZING! They are located in the Chestnut Hill Plaza, near the Container Store & Legal Seafood. Okay, first of all, the CUTEST ice cream shop ever! Obsessed with the pink interior & all the flavors they offer... BOMB! We decided to do three scoops in a cup with honeycomb, dulce de leche, & strawberry matcha. Loved every single one. Also, their to-go ice cream pints fridge is absolutely adorable haha. Something I noticed was how good quality their spoons were. Like yes, disposable but very high quality single use spoon. Overall, just OBSESSED and will for sure be back soon!! OH, and their playlist? IMMACULATE. Loved the afrobeats!

Yelp
First time at a VL location, always saw it but never did get a chance to pop in. Someone in a group said let's stop by after our bday celebration for desert so the opportunity arrived. Me and the lady shared a triple scoop (2 probably would have been enough) chose the honey comb flavor (perfection honestly, not overly sweet had the right balance), my favorite the dulce de leche had nice caramel choco bits in there and some crunch. And lastly the strawberry matcha! This on its own was great but to me didn't play as balanced with the other two flavors. It's definitely heavy on matcha which is great on its own. The service was great, space was clean and cute, they also give samples if you want to try before you buy. Others in the group got honey comb turned into a frappe, and build your own rootbeer float as well as a build your own ice cream sandwich! I think all in all everyone enjoyed their post meal desert!!!

Yelp
If this was the only ice cream available in a decently sized radius, maybe I'd come again. Otherwise, I'd pass. I got their famous honey flavor but honestly it most tasted like syrup than actually high quality ice cream. Pretty overpriced for what you get, and it's always freezer burnt. Scoopers don't wear gloves either. I'll pass.

Yelp
Super cute and pink ice cream shop! I tried their seasonal flavors: strawberry matcha and peppermint. The workers were really nice, I felt no pressure when I tried different flavors before making my decision. The ice cream tasted more premium than other local ice cream shops in Massachusetts. I thought pricing was also similar to other shops. I would definitely come back in the future.

Yelp
I've had Van Leeuwen in NYC plenty of times. I was excited to see this place open in Chestnut Hill. I think there was an ice cream place in this spot already. Van Leewen is quality ice cream. They have fun flavors as well. I think they even rotate some specialty ones. You can get a Sundae with 2 scoops of 2 different flavors, plus 3 toppings for about $12. This place was packed on opening weekend but the line moves so fast. Seating is limited but you might be able to snag a table. They even have some outdoor tables. I'm not a huge ice cream fan, but every so often I'll crave it. I'm just giving this place 5 stars because the line moves fast, the staff is polite and the ice cream is tasty. I find it hard to rank ice cream places because it's not my favorite food.

Yelp
I didn't know that Van Leeuwen replaced Oddfellows. This was the first time I had vegan ice cream, it was...interesting. Tasted like matcha, but with a lingering floral taste. I ate it in a waffle cone, which softened up too quick for my liking. Ironically, the setup and their schtick is the same as Oddfellows. Makes me wonder if they just changed their name for some reason. I will definitely do a better job of visiting more often!

Yelp
Super cute store with delicious ice cream! Prices are like any other ice cream shop in Boston. The peanut butter, coffee, and Earl grey flavors were excellent so far. Service was also very friendly which was a plus.

Molly L.

Yelp
Very helpful staff with picking a flavor and letting you sample! I got the vegan cookies and cream with caramel swirl, it was very good. Plenty of seating options both inside and outside. We went around 9pm on a Saturday, not too packed, quick service, and not a terribly long line.

Yelp
Tried the new Van Leeuwen store in chestnut hill and was not disappointed! I have been to one of their various locations in NYC and remembered really liking it. I've also seen their pints sold at Whole Foods as well. They offer a wide selection of dairy free and vegan flavors which is nice especially for people who can't tolerate it. Employees were soo friendly. Good vibes. Lots of indoor and outdoor seating. Great selection of flavors. Try it out if you haven't yet!

Yelp
Sunny and hot today so ice cream was on my mind as I left the Container Store in Chestnut Hill. Van Leeuwen caught my eye with their sign outside- it was a Boston cream pie sundae. I was pretty sure I needed that. Vanilla bean ice cream, cake, hot fudge, more ice cream with some whipped cream and dark chocolate on top. By the time I got inside, I decided my eyes were bigger than my stomach. I tried the delicious sour cherry creamsicle in a cup. It was delicious. Service was friendly and with a smile. About a dozen flavors available. The waffle cones baking smelled delicious. Plenty of parking.

Yelp
I was excited to hear a new ice cream place opening up in Chestnut Hill, but kinda disappointed to find out that it replaced Odd Fellows. It's right next to Legal Sea Foods and has the exact same setup as Odd Fellows when you walk in. They only accept cards for payment and have a cash-to-card machine next to the register. Like Odd Fellows, Van Leeuwen offers both regular and dairy-free alternatives for ice cream options. I tried the Honeycomb Fudge Ripple and Early Gray (recommended by the server) and enjoyed both. I ultimately ended up getting a scoop of Earl Gray and a scoop of strawberry in a waffle cone. The waffle cone was crisp, and light, and went perfectly with the smooth texture of the ice cream. I enjoyed the flavor of the Earl Gray Tea ice cream showcasing the hints of bergamot oil in it. Overall, a nice place to grab a sweet treat for yourself.

Yelp
Great ice cream. Great service. Sour cherry is awesome flavor. Happy they're here. Great plus to CH

Yelp
Wasn't expecting anything special from a chain ice cream shop in a strip mall. But wow, the ice cream is incredible! The seating area is also nice and air conditioned. I would definitely come here again when in the area, and occasionally buy the brand from the grocery store.

Marcelo E.

Yelp
I've gotta say, some of the best ice cream I've had in ages! Seriously! It was incredible and the service was even better ! Isa was so kind and so helpful when it comes to picking my flavor and topping, Incredible food and incredible service, how much better can you get then that !

Olivia P.

Yelp
they don't take cash and got charged 6 dollars for this EXTREMELY small hot chocolate. Also tried to scam my friend when she CLEARLY asked for a small and gave her a medium cup and charged her for a medium TWICE.

Yelp
Came here with my babies. My little one was in a heavy car seat and one of the employees or manager was so exceptionally thoughtful -- he jumped up when he saw me with the heavy car seat and moved all the chairs out of my way and was very kind. Once we started to order, another employee behind the counter was also very thoughtful and accommodating, offering my daughter to try a little taste -- my daughter loved that flavor and was sold immediately! My only suggestion is -- and this might not be a popular opinion in the US -- please make portion sizes smaller or have some option for small scoops. I really don't care how much I'll pay for it -- it can be the same price, but I don't want my kid eating 5kgs of sugar in one serving. We took the smallest size and asked they make it half of the usual size and it was still humongous even for me, grown up. It's not just this spot -- it's every good ice cream place I've tried in the US. I understand they're trying to give us "our money's worth" and others would criticize if they perceived portion size as small, but to me being healthier is more important. So it would be great if there were a 1/4 of current portion size for the same price for people like me. And second tip -- for some reason floors are sticky. They were sticky at old fellows too. It might just be something with the tiles. But these are minor issues. 5 stars for such thoughtful service and excellent manners. We'll be back!

Yelp
Meh! If you want genuinely great ice cream, Van Leeuwen isn't the place! Take my advice, go to Lizzy's on Main Street in Waltham. The BEST I've had in Massachusetts and I've tried just about all of them

Phin C.

Yelp
amazing ice cream makes me so happy inside went with my friend Billy and Jared cot the cookies and cream and were blown away 10/10 recomend

Justanotherone C.

Yelp
My 4th frappe, each time thinking they would do better, but no. They are all very thin, lots of milk, minimal ice cream, not to mention very small cup for $11. Very disappointing. I wish we could get a Haagen Dasz scoop shop around here.

Yelp
Good cream, but even better service. One of their young employees Ben, I call him "Baustin", served me a mean cup of cookie dough. Straight down the gullet for me. He had a really good sense of humor! Thanks Baustin.

Punita K.

Yelp
One of the few places that remains open late. Great if one wants to have some dessert while working late!

Ashley ..

Yelp
As expensive as J.P. Licks but not at all as good. We got four flavors and ended up throwing two away almost untouched. If your vegan, I guess it would be a good option since there are several vegan options. Other than that, I would so save your money for literally any other ice cream place!

Griffin Y.

Yelp
Amazing ice cream, service was nice and friendly, restaurant was really clean. But the best thing about this place is the ice cream that is epic but not that fat and expensive. One thing is that you could have just a little smaller size. But other than that, would definitely recommend this place.

Jacob S.

Yelp
I was skeptical, but wow! What delicious ice cream. Highly recommend. Also, great seating outside.

Kalice S.

Yelp
Delicious flavors! Staff is so friendly. Great new ice cream store! The honeycomb was really god. The portions are generous. Will definitely be back to try new flavors. My daughter had the Earl Grey and loved it!

Elyssa G.

Yelp
I thought they would be open at 10:50pm for a late ice cream after night out. The website said they would, but to my disappointment they weren't open. I think someone should update the hours so people aren't disappointed:(((

Kate C.

Yelp
I went with my kids last week and it's a new favorite spot! I wanted to shout out the sweet BC students who served me- Ella, Shane, and Kate. Hope I'm getting those names right! Thank you Van Leeuwen for the great ice cream and experience. Go eagles and go to Van Leeuwens!!

Melanie M.

Yelp
My daughter and I were very disappointed. Ice cream was thick but surprisingly flavourless- the vanilla had no vanilla taste and the chocolate cookie dough was no better. The waffle sundae bowl had zero crunch. Also, the service was sooo slow. We will not return.
