Our 15 favorite places in Midtown Village - Philadelphia - The Infatuation

"When we need a frozen treat, we usually look for water ice. But when we can’t make it to John’s, this Brooklyn-based shop has some of the best ice creams in the city. The flavors of the house-made dairy and vegan ice cream are unconventional, like honeycomb, black cherry chocolate chip, brown sugar cookie dough chunk, and earl grey. They’re open late so no matter how you start your night, it can end with a cup of something creamy and smooth." - Candis Mclean

Van Leeuwen Ice Cream - Review - Rittenhouse - Philadelphia - The Infatuation

"In August 2021, this Brooklyn-based ice cream brand and frozen treat spot opened their first Philly locations in Midtown Village. Now, they started selling housemade dairy and vegan ice cream in Rittenhouse. Here you can get cups of black cherry chocolate chip, brown sugar cookie dough chunk, and pumpkin cheesecake until 11pm from Sunday through Thursday and until midnight on the weekends." - Candis R. Google
Great spot for ice cream lovers! They have an amazing selection of unique and classic flavors. I tried the pistachio, and it was delicious — rich, slightly nutty, and definitely different from the usual pistachio you find elsewhere. The texture was super creamy, and the flavor felt thoughtfully made. If you’re looking for high-quality ice cream with a twist, Van Leeuwen is definitely worth a visit. I’ll be back to try more flavors!

I was staying near Van Leeuwen and honestly never noticed the shop until one night, coming back a bit late, I realized it was still open. I decided to stop by and check it out, and from that day on, it became part of my nightly routine during my trip. They have a great variety of flavors, and everything I tried was excellent. My absolute favorite was the ice cream sandwich with vegan vanilla—simple but perfect. I also really enjoyed their vegan peanut butter brownie ice cream, which was rich, creamy, and seriously addictive.

Google
Great little ice cream shop! Flavors are delicious and prices aren’t too bad! Tons of flavors and toppings! The worker is nice, and respectful. Great ice cream shop!

Google
First time trying Van Leeuwen and i LOVED! Worker was friendly enough to let us sample and the flavors are nothing like what i'm used to but overall delicious! Good spot to get ice cream!

Google
Very fresh, very tasty! Seriously underrated. Probably due to the close proximity to Jeni’s & 1-900. My favorite thing here is the honeycomb ice cream shake (not pictured)! Delish.

Google
The flavors here are great and it was totally worth the wait!! It's creamy and has perfectly balanced flavors and sweetness. Must visit if you're in Philly!!

Google
Great service from Emma who was friendly and helpful and informative! Love this location, you can grab a wide variety of pints to go or get some cups or cones. I love Van Leeuwen in Manhattan and am glad Rittenhouse Square has it now too! Really enjoyed the blueberry jelly donut seasonal flavor, I hope it’s added to the menu full-time soon!

Google
Do not get the malted shake and fries, its disgusting!! It's literally blended fries with vanilla, extremely chunky and weird. Mostly fries and very little ice cream. I've never hated an ice cream so much. We loved the All the Cookies one though. The person working was nice even though it was busy. I do wish she had offered to let me try the shake and fries one before buying because it was gross - any flavor that's really that weird should have a sample offered before purchase, I threw away $7.

Yelp
I love the Sicilian Pistachio Ice Cream!!! I always get the special delicious cherries as my topping. I would love if they had a pistachio syrup or cream topping! The folks there over at the Rittenhouse location are so kind and cheerful! I try to visit at least twice a week. Try the Sicilian Pistachio!

Yelp
Earl Gray is still my favorite. You can actually taste the tea flavor. I like the smooth creamy texture. Friendly staff, clean space. Will be back

Yelp
It was a very hot day in Philly and I wanted some ice cream. I am familiar with Van Leeuwen from New York City so I went in to try. I was immediately greeted with this interesting cinnamon sugar scent which brightened up my day. I want to have this smell every time I enter my home. The staff was very friendly and helpful. They let me taste all the different flavors that I was unfamiliar with. Van Leeuwen has several unique flavors. I am a big fan of ice cream cake so having a couple scoops of that made me super happy. For an extra dollar you can have a second flavor. This time I ordered the brown sugar cookie dough. It was okay but nothing can top the ice cream cake flavor in my book. This place was great and I will be coming here more often this summer.

Yelp
While the prices are high and the lines are long, it is pretty worth it. The flavors were rich, the texture was dence and the portions were large. Particularly the sour cherry was my favorite by far. The contrast of sour and sweet worked really well. The waffles cone added a great texture and they can even make it vegan too. The staff was super friendly and had tones of energy which is more than I could say for myself if I was taking care of so many people all fay long. The line when we went wasn't too bad since it was late on a weekday.
google avatar

Gabriella L.

Yelp
Delicioussssss ice cream. Fun flavors. Great spot! Gets busy, but the line moves quick.
google avatar

Amber E.

Yelp
Oh my goodness, so amazing. I'm not usually a dessert person, but this totally hit the spot. We sampled a couple flavors, and we're all happy with our choices.
google avatar

Amelia C.

Yelp
Loved the peanut butter brownie honeycomb. The honeycomb pieces in the ice cream added a lovely crunch texture to the rich and thick consistency. Came here on a Friday night at 11PM in June and the line was out the door. The line moves fairly quickly.

Yelp
The little shop is inviting with the smell of waffles being made for cones. The menu has something for everybody vegan options, regular Ice cream (vanilla and chocolate) and some adventurous options! Today I tried the dolce de Leche with truffles served in a waffle cone that was still hot!! it was the best thing I've had in weeks ! I love how nice everybody is that works here and the music was also great. The man who waited on me was pleasant , patient and had a great smile!

Yelp
We see this brand in the grocery stores and wanted to try their storefront. We ordered the honey comb and cookies & cream and both were descent. I liked the honey comb more but neither were amazing in any particular way.
google avatar

Jamie N.

Yelp
Creamy, delicious, waffle cones made right on the spot. What more do ya need? Vegan options also available with arguably more delicious flavors than the regular ice cream. I enjoyed this v much

Yelp
I definitely have brand loyalty with this company. I prefer the 13th street location because it's larger and has places to sit and eat, whereas this location is a fraction of the size. You can usually get in and out and I've only had to wait in line here once out of the 3-4 times I've been here.

Yelp
I was so happy to hear that they were offering a seasonal Thandai flavor for fall. It is quite delicious if you haven't had Thandai before (Indian milk-based drink prepared with all sorts of nuts and spices like almonds, fennel seeds, rose petals, pepper, poppy seeds, cardamom, saffron etc) but personally it wasn't creamy enough - because I am spoiled by the local Indian grocery store that sells Thandai flavor ice cream. I feel like it is more of a summer flavor or at least it is in India. But I also know fall in America equals to anything with "spices" and could be why they released it as a fall flavor.
google avatar

Nicole C.

Yelp
Good but not worth the hype. As an ice cream lover I was excited to give this place a try. I tried the seasonal ice cream, Pumpkin Cheesecake. It was good. I wasn't exactly impressed by the store, the ice cream, or the cost. I think if you're 'vegan' this would be a great place to try as they have several vegan ice creams.
google avatar

Amelia S.

Yelp
Really good quality ice cream and interesting flavors. They do run out of stuff towards the end of the day. On the Thursday night we visited, they had run out of Pistachio and of root beer. I ended up getting Sour Cherry and Cream. It had a lot of flavor- very tart. Service was friendly and quick. The shop is very small with no seating.
google avatar

James R.

Yelp
Always fast and quick service. The ice cream is always great and it's and easy in and out. Three scoops and I'm out the door.

Paula D.

Yelp
great service and great ice cream!! I love to come on Tiesdays because they have a special of free topping!!
google avatar

Yelp
10 stars out of 5!!!! I'm still thinking about the ice cream I had and that was 3 weeks ago!!!! We went to the Rittenhouse square location and it was so cute!

Yelp
*No Cash* Small stop & go ice cream shop. One of the smaller locations but it's so close to rittenhouse that you should go take a stroll with your ice cream anyways. They do sell their pints in store as well. Great non-dairy options! I appreciate when shops offer more than just 2 non-dairy options, Van Leeuwen gives me plenty. I'm in love with the Earl Grey, dairy but it's a sacrifice I will gladly take. A must if you're a tea fan. Solid size scoops but I will still consider it a bit pricey. Everyone I have introduced to this place has loved the ice cream so maybe it's worth the price.
google avatar

Olga K.

Yelp
Second time in this shop & I have no complaints. This time decided to go for a milkshake. What's cool is that any ice-cream can be turned into a shake. I loved this! Literally any! Sizable portion too! I didn't take a picture because I drank it so fast. Tasty! The girl who was behind the counter today was very sweet.

Yelp
My favorite NYC ice cream shop in Philly?!?? Yes, please! I love their ice cream, it is so creamy and delicious! I will never say no to Van Leeuwen ice cream! The location in the Rittenhouse Square area is fabulous for grabbing ice cream and walking around. The shop is small, so don't expect to sit down and eat inside. Order, pay, get ice cream and walk around. They have pints to go, as well, so if you prefer a lid, opt for one of those. Their ice creams are for those who eat dairy and those who do not. The menu is clearly marked with G for gluten, C for coconut and N for nuts. They have sugar cones and cups, which are great for adding toppings except that they pack everything overflowing to the brim. On a hot day, eat fast! One scoops is likely plenty for anyone wanting just some ice cream satisfaction, unless you're starving and it's your meal, then 2 scoops is fun. Plus, if you can't decide, go for 2 scoops. Classic toppings like whipped cream, sprinkles, chocolate sauce and of course you can get milkshakes! If I had more room in my stomach, I definitely would've gotten a milkshake! Flavors run out, so be patient. We had mint chocolate chip, strawberry and double chocolate brownie in our group. The single scoops were pretty impressive for anyone! Definitely go here if you love high quality ice cream!

Yelp
I was staying across the street from a Van Leeuwen during my recent trip to Philly so how could I not stop by? I tried the Marionberry cheesecake which I had sort of mixed feelings about - the flavor was good but there were bits/chunks of ice mixed in giving the ice cream a weird crunchy texture overall. The portion size was huge - I got one flavor in a cup and if it was just one scoop, it was a giant scoop and would have been good for two people. I would definitely come back and try different flavors!
google avatar

Alex S.

Yelp
This ice cream was absolutely delicious! The scoops were so creamy and packed with flavor. The cashier was friendly and gave us a couple of samples each. We ended up with the Peanut butter brownie honeycomb, Honeycomb, and Lavender. I'd definitely return to try their wide variety of unique flavors! They also have prepackaged pints available for purchase.

Yelp
You will never taste the honeycomb ice cream Because the most insane chocolate ice cream you have had in your life Is completely overwhelming your senses. But if you can get a quiet moment with the honeycomb all by itself It is subtle charming and wonderful. * * * Question: What does Van Leeuwen have in common with most Philadelphia hoagie places? Answer: No Seats. Question: Is having no seats a good thing? Answer: Having no seats is not a good thing. * * * Philadelphia is a tough town But they should at least let you sit down to eat the stuff they got. But then Philadelphia has the Philadelphia Orchestra and the Barnes Foundation - the best orchestra and the best museum on the planet. The Philadelphia logic is that if we give you absolutely exquisite and unique pleasures - you will put up with a lot of suffering to get it. Totally transcendental chocolate ice cream makes you forget about sore feet. For a while ...

Selena F.

Yelp
The ice cream was nice and creamy. I ordered one scoop of praline butter cake and the bits of butter cake were delicious. It's average pricing for a specialty ice cream shop, still pretty pricing for one scoop at $6.60 and milkshakes were $11. Since it was late their signature flavor honeycomb was sold out so will definitely have to come back and try. Still would recommend because of the variety of flavors.

Yelp
Three words: Honeycomb Ice Cream. I am now really in trouble because I discovered my local grocery store sells this ice cream that I sampled in Philly when I visited this summer. It is creamy, silky and has real chunks of honeycomb in it! I love honey anything bu this is like next level ice cream. Service was good, store was clean, no complaints. And it also helped me put out the fire in my mouth from the Mexican dinner we had across the street :-)
google avatar

Yelp
I love vegan ice cream. Not because I have any issues with dairy, but when it is done right it is chef's kiss! Van Leeuwen does it right and has yummy toppings too! I just wish they were a local brand!

Yelp
I'm just here in my car having some of their Brown Sugar Cookie Dough Brownie Chunk ice cream in a waffle cone and enjoying life. I was mildly skeptical at first. Franklin Fountain is the gold standard for ice cream to me in this city. I don't mind paying for true goodness here. I was wondering if the quality would be worth it for the price. It is. You can definitely tell that the ingredients are very pure in this ice cream. I may have ordered a flavor that was too sweet (I mean it has sugar in the name so that's my fault), and after a while of eating it I felt like I just had enough sugar. Let's just call it too much of a good thing. They have won me over and I will be back. Next time I'll go with a more basic chocolate or vanilla. My 9 year old son actually called his scoop of chocolate "too chocolatey" for his taste, which means I'll probably love it.

Yelp
Stopped in at Van Leeuwen Ice Cream in Rittenhouse Square for a lil'something sweet after happy hour when we saw the line wasn't out the door. The Mini Chocolate Sundae did the trick: I appreciated the ability to swap the Chocolate Fudge Brownie ice cream for the S'mores ice cream and that because the scoop shop was out of cherries, I was able to add a different topping in its place. The sundae was pretty (fluffy whipped cream piled high) and the ice cream itself was pretty good, though it could've had more of a s'mores punch of flavor.
google avatar

Chris S.

Yelp
Van Leeuwen's gets all the hype and I can sorta see why. For a small store, it was drawing quite a crowd. It's a pop in place, not a sit down. I never had a chance to try vegan ice cream before and the employee was really helpful and patient, offering me samples, as I was trying to find a flavor I enjoyed that wouldn't be too sweet. I'm big on trying new flavors unique to a place and they did not disappoint. I don't remember the exact flavor but I'm pretty sure I went for a honeycomb flavor while friends went for chocolate and strawberry.
google avatar

Miles A.

Yelp
Pretty good, lil pricey. Lots of fun flavors and tasty. Good for late night treats or to try the exotic ice creams.
google avatar

Emma F.

Yelp
Solid ice cream and I appreciate that they offer dairy-free versions. I had the dark chocolate fudge brownie. Even though I got the smallest size (single scoop) it was still a lot of ice cream and honestly a bit much.
google avatar

Janicca C.

Yelp
Great vegan options! Forgot to take pics. But definitely worth it. We ate across the street at The Love and walked right in over afterwards .
google avatar

Christina A.

Yelp
Stopped by Van Leeuwen because of all the social media hype surrounding the brand. We literally had one of their shops below our AirBnB so how could we not check it out? I got the pumpkin cheesecake fall special and my husband got the s'mores. Both were really tasty, just such a tiny portion for the price. One scoop in a sugar cone for $6? No thanks. I'll try their in-store pints (~$6 for a whole pint) rather than go back to a store-front location, but had to try since there aren't really any in New England.
google avatar

Noelle W.

Yelp
I love ice cream, and Van Leeuwen is a great choice when I have an ice cream craving. This is a newer location in Rittenhouse, which I like because it's great to grab a cone or cup to enjoy as I'm walking around rittenhouse window shopping or I can walk a few blocks away to rittenhouse square to enjoy it in the park. Every time I go, the service has been good and I like being able to sample the flavors. They usually have special flavors of both dairy and vegan options (always appreciate vegan options!!) for the month, as well as flavors they always have. I'm a big fan of the pistachio and find myself always going back to it. It's super creamy! They have pints for sale too so you can grab some and keep enjoying at home. It's a little pricey but hey it's delicious and I've never had buyers remorse over ice cream soooo go enjoy!
google avatar

Steve T.

Yelp
The strawberry ice cream used real strawberries! Great refreshing taste, creamy and not too sweet. Service was pretty quick and easy even though there was a line out the door. Will be back to try other flavors!

Kayla C.

Yelp
This is the first time I've had Van Leeuwen outside of NYC. The smell when I walked in made for an instant drool fest. The eclectic flavors made it hard to choose. I ended up going with the brown sugar cookie dough with brownie. It was stellar. The service was quick & the place was clean. 10/10 would recommend.
google avatar

Petros K.

Yelp
Excellent ice cream as well as interesting and different flavors that you won't find anywhere else. There is no inside seating so everything you take will either have to be enjoyed at that minute or taken home. I ended up trying pistachio which was out of this world. Next time I come back I'll try some of the other flavors that sounded amazing . The employee that was working was very nice and offered samples.
google avatar

David V.

Yelp
They don't accept Bitcoin payments, which is discriminating against people who prefer to pay with crypto. Good ice cream, though. I like the honeycomb a lot.

Lisa J.

Yelp
*Van Leeuwen is cashless.* Quality ice cream, but going the cashless route is discriminatory to customers who prefer to pay with cash.

Sylvia S.

Yelp
This place was so amazing. My son and I wanted a shake. We came upon this place. My son order a cookies and cream shake. I could t decide between to flavors so they make a suggestion. Best shake ever! The service was amazing. The two young ladies were very nice.

Andy D.

Yelp
The honeycomb ice cream is delicious with bits of caramelized sugar I think. 1 scoop is enough for one person I feel like. Kind of expensive for 1 scoop of Ice cream but Again expected. Staff was very friendly and gave great recommendations .
