"Van Shabu & Bar (1156 Dorchester Ave., Boston) closed down permanently this week, just five months after completing renovations. The owners, Karen and Mateo Diep, have moved on to other projects, including a partnership with Simon Malls, operating Noodle Station in South Shore Plaza and planning to open another at Burlington Mall." - Dana Hatic

So disappointed - Didn't even get seated here. Wanted to stop for a late lunch with my kids and was turned away by the host saying they couldn't take any more customers?? There were multiple empty tables. It was the strangest thing... Updated to 4 star review. Not sure what was going on that first day, but I gave Van's another try and I am SO glad I did! Best seaweed salad I've ever had and the king crab sushi was out of this world. The food is excellent staff is...unpredictable. Got a very nice server on my second visit who was very attentive without being annoying and even offered me a free drink to go. The third visit my server didn't even know what drink I was referring to when I tried to order it again. It was just an iced green tea with fruit puree...? Odd. Anyway, I haven't tried the hot pot there, but what I have tried was very tasty.

Delicious all you can eat sushi and hot pot, though I only come for the sushi, tried hot pot and wasn't too thrilled with it. They also have regular menu individual plates and i was pleasantly surprised by their fried sweet potato sushi. I always take my friends here when we can. They also have bubble tea with regular or flavored popping boba.

If you're looking for a relaxed environment with good food and drinks, this is your spot. They dont have a huge variety of Sushi rolls or really special/exotic rolls but the one's they do have are delicious. Dragon, Caterpillar and Scorpion Maki are my favorites. Bruins roll is an honorable mention. The prices are also just right. Check it out.

I went in for the all you can eat sushi lunch and the sushi was the highlight. The sushi was fresh and delicious!! I would never go back or recommend!! When we entered there was no one at the front to seat us so we waited for a little bit but nothing major. The server was very rude, it was my first time there and I didn't understand how to order off the all you can eat sushi menu, after the second question the waiter instantly got an attitude, threw down the menus and stormed off, I was shocked to say the least. After figuring it out for myself the waiter came by grabbed the menus off the table and stormed off again. I had to signal to him to get his attention so that we could order drinks. I asked him for a regular restaurant menu, with an attitude he asked "why, you don't want all you can eat anymore?" I said yes but I would like to order off the regular menu as well, he storms off again. It just kept getting worst the longer we stayed, the drinks were gross and the edamame was over cooked. Although the sushi was good, everything else was a nightmare.

Really great customer service. The sushi here is excellent. I recommend the Godzilla or the Bruins rolls or the crab avocado salad. They even do pickup! The only downfall is that they close between 3 and 5 everyday.

Nice place! Great all you can eat hot pot and Sushi. Sushi and food is very fresh. However, they automatically add 20% tip and then want to argue why they deserve 20%. Ohhh and you better eat all that you order or they will charge you extra for that. I get it, don't waist food but dayum we didn't eat 5 sushi and they threatened to charge more. So we stuffed them in our bag.

This place has one of the best Hotpot & Sushi buffets in the area. Yes, they serve Hotpot AND Sushi for their buffet. It's a bit pricey, but only by 5$ if you only want hotpot. Their buffet is pretty much the only reason I come here...now to think of it I don't think I've actually ordered regular food from here. They have parking on the side of the building...which is only like 5 spots. There are plenty of street parking as well. If you come here during the night (6PM or so) you can park next door at the car shop place as well. Anyways, here's the breakdown: Atmosphere: The restaurant is pretty contemporary. The decor and everything is very nice. It can get pretty loud if you come here during the busy hours, especially if there is a game going on. They have booths, but if you have a large party, they will seat you in the middle. Lighting for some reason, gets dim at times. Food: The food here is VERY fresh despite it being buffet. The amazing thing they have for the buffet is crab meat. It's not fresh crab, but it taste exactly like fresh crab. I know...it's mind boggling. They have a huge menu for sushi and hotpot for the buffet, and is well worth it. I would definitely recommend trying the Salmon Skin sushi roll and for hotpot, the clams...they're huge! They also have very good drinks with a full bar...and they are not stingy with the alcohol. So beware! Service: The service is amazing here. Sometimes when they are busy, it can be a bit lackluster, but can't blame them. When you're ready to give in your sheet (you fill in a sheet for sushi and hotpot buffet) you can flag down anyone and they will take it. Food usually comes out pretty fast as well. Only problem is that they sometimes miss a couple of things you checked off, but since it's buffet, you can just order it again. Also, after ordering a couple of sheets, they start to get stingy with how much they give you. Once again, not a huge problem since its buffet...they just waste more paper. Overall: This is definitely the place to go for hotpot and sushi! The food is very fresh and if you want drinks as well, this is the perfect place to go. They take reservations as well!

Food was ok! Sushi ( spider roll) is very small for the price and qaulity. However, the service suck!!! My waitress was extremely rude like he was having a really bad day. He asked me if I want small or large pot. I did not know there were two sizes! So I asked what is the difference...then he said one is large one is small ..thanks for being bitxhy for no reason and he was talking to me like I was eating there for free! Eyes rolling and stuff... I ended up leaving about 20% tip but it definitely be the last time I'm going there. There are so many places around there that have better foods and services.
