"A large Ukrainian flag hangs in the window of Varenyk House. The varenyky made fresh daily are also done Ukrainian style, as is the borscht, cooked with a surfeit of cabbage and beef. The varenyky menu itself boasts no fewer than twenty varieties, but it’s hard to imagine going more Ukrainian than the “blue and yellow” — potato-filled and dyed the colors of the Ukrainian flag." - Robert Sietsema, Andrew Karpan

"The deli and grocery in Ridgewood, Queens, offers an array of varenyky, meats, and hot dishes, and is collecting donations to be sent to Ukraine. The solidarity was giving Rogulskyi hope, and an uptick in business; the influx of customers, although not on the level of the long lines at the much more established Veselka and Ukrainian East Village Restaurant, was noticeable, and he was grateful. One person had driven two hours to pick up food." - Hannah Goldfield

Amazing place for authentic Ukrainian food. Their homemade pirogies and vareneky are the best! They have different varieties. I always get the frozen potato onion one, and potato and cheese ones and boil them at home, topped w sour cream and sautéed onions..so good. They’re sold by the pound and are extremely fairly priced at around $8-10/lb depending on the filling or course. A full bag is about 2.5 lbs and you will get quite a lot of portions from it! They also have some hot foods, as well as desserts like honey cake and sour cherry varenyky. Service is very nice and the store is extremely clean and modern. Please support this small business 🇺🇦

Definitely pick up some stuff from here. The dumplings they sell are exactly like Polish pierogi, plus a ton of other delicious food. Always see a bunch of grandmas in the back making them by hand.

Hello, I usually love this place and have been ordering food here not for the first time since I live nearby, and it's delicious. Usually, I have no complaints about the food, but today, I ordered a Chicken Kiev cutlet, zrazy, and Olivier salad, but unfortunately, I'm not sure if the meat in the zrazy was cooked properly. The mashed potatoes, which they said would be a side dish, are visible in quantity in the photo. The chicken in the cutlet is yellow, and there was some water leakage, causing the cutlet to fall apart. The Olivier salad is mostly made of peas. It's regrettable for me to admit this, but I didn't enjoy my experience at Varenyk House today, although I usually would recommend it. I hope things will be different next time.

I'm sad to say this, but the quality of food at this place has drastically gone down. I stopped by recently since I was passing by, got a small borscht, stuffed cabbage and a portion of mushroom pierogi. Borscht was delicious. The stuffed cabbage was nasty! The actual meat and rice stuffing inside of the leaves was just terrible. It was extremely bland, there was a total lack of seasoning. I'm not sure how you can ruin pierogi, but the ones that I got were not up to par. The mushrooms were unseasoned, and the pierogi itself were extremely mushy. Food here was great at one point, it's very disappointing how bad the quality of the food is there now. The counter person was lovely and extremely nice, at least the staff is polite and courteous, so that's a plus.

Google
Not sure about the recent commenters complaints about the pierogies and stuffed cabbage. Had both very recently, multiple times. all the food here is incredible. I love the pierogies AND the stuffed cabbage the most. Grateful for this neighborhood spot 💫

I ordered the short rib and potato with bacon varenyky. They were both so delicious! The borsht and olivye salad was exactly how my grandma used to make it. I will be coming back here to try the rest of the menu. They also have a store inside where they sell a lot of the tradional ukranian foods and I got really good pickles. Service was extremely nice.

Google
This spot is amazing. I have never had Ukrainian food so this was my first time having it. And wow was it great. My wife and I had the chicken and it tasted amazing. I am so glad this place is in the neighborhood. I would definitely recommend this spot :).

Delicious food and nice people. I love the Varenyks, you get all the yummy accoutrements. Plus they have an amazing selection of Ukrainian specialty groceries, ice cream/candy & drinks. We love to support our local businesses & Ukraine.

Yelp
Came on a Thursday night a few minutes before closing and they had such a large selection of Ukrainian goodies! the staff were still hard away making dumplings in the back. Once stepping into the store, you are met with large freezers and fridges stuffed to the brim with all things Ukrainian. Many of their dumpling items are in large packages (2-3lbs a pack) and range from $8-$15 per lb depending on the filling. $15 a pound for their lamb and short rib Pierogis. Price-wise, it's very fair! And you can taste to quality and heart they put into these Pierogis. Can't go wrong with any flavor. I got the lamb and it was stuffed with tender lamb pieces, no filler. And they make for great quick meals! I also snagged a box of cabbage rolls stuffed with a pork and rice filling. Simple home-y flavor and better than rolls I've gotten from restaurants. Just reheat and it's ready to go! $15 for 5 large cabbage rolls was a great deal as well! Would get again. The only thing I wouldn't get again is their soup dumplings, as it was a bit difficult to cook and was a little too doughy near the top of the dumpling. Flavor wise, it was delicious and had a nice broth (assuming you didn't pop them. Only 1 didn't pop). But it was a difficult item to cook right in boiling water, like the instructions mention. Perhaps, user error. Every item is sold by weight and labeled after selecting your items. But they're happy to check the weight/explain price before purchasing.

Yelp
Tried two of their TGTG bag cause it had a 5/5 rating on the site. It's a deli like store that serves cold and hot dishes. The guy was nice and gave us several different items to try. First time trying Ukrainian food and it was good for the price we paid for.

Yelp
So delicious. My kids love their potato and cheese pierogi/varenyk. Stefan - the owner, is always so polite! You should go try it!

Yelp
Vareniki from potato make not from real potato no salt pepper inside.i cook 10 pieces ,4 full is open ,nobody gives money back no star

Yelp
Cannot possibly say enough things about this place and the guy behind the counter. I mean, the short rib pierogis are a life changing experience. The blintzes are wonderful and they have both sweet fruit based ones as well as savory ones with meat and onions and cheese. The hunter sausage is amazing- smoky, flavorful, just awesome- and I was taught that Kielbasa just means sausage. It's a catch all term but we use it here just to refer to the massive Polish sausages (which they have and are delicious (and reasonably priced!) They've really got an enormous selection. The only downside (totally not their fault) is that parking is a HUGE pain in the aaaaaankle. Will definitely be back!

Yelp
BLUF: Recommended. A worthwhile visit. Varenyk House is a Ukrainian deli and butcher shop that sells varenyky (boiled dumplings with a variety of fillings in both frozen and ready-to-eat formats), comfort foods, Eastern European dry goods and sweets, and a selection of sausages and raw meats. Everything is take-out only. The food seems humble. Flavors are nicely balanced -- neither plain nor too pronounced. Dishes we've tried include: - Mushroom and Sauerkraut varenyky: $12 for 16 pieces. Pretty good. Comes with three dipping sauces: sour cream, apple sauce, and some sort of onion dip. - Meat Stuffed Cabbage: $9. Two cabbage rolls stuffed with pork, along with mashed potatoes, beet salad, and cabbage salad. - Uzvar: $4. A house-made drink made from a variety of dried fruit, including apples and dates. Logistics: Varenyk House is located mere blocks away from Fresh Pond Road subway station (M train). Metered parking is available on Fresh Pond Road.

Yelp
Great place to try Ukrainian food for the first time! Come on over to show some support. Try the varenyky (pronounced vah-rEH-nee-key). Ukrainian stuffed dumplings - better known by their Polish name, pierogi. They have 15 different versions here. Everything from short ribs to salmon to fruits. Choose between fried or boiled. Varenyky varieties: beef short rib potato and cheese potato and smoked bacon sauerkraut and mushroom pork surimi (faux crab) salty cheese sweet cheese salmon strawberry blueberry cherry Tried the sauerkraut and mushroom variety. Interesting taste variation for a dumpling. I'd get this flavor again. Every order comes with sour cream, apple sauce and fried onions as dips. Meat (pork) stuffed cabbage entree was super good. You get 2 rolls with sides of mashed potato, beet salad and cabbage salad. The beet salad was a perfect accompaniment to the stuffed cabbage. It added a nice zing to it. Everything tasted fresh. This small place has Ukrainian groceries, a fresh meat counter, drinks, deli meats and cooked food in the rear. There is also a dessert counter in the front. A little of everything! They also have varenyky /pierogi frozen packages in the back freezer. Decor: Bright and clean. No seating, so takeout only. There is also daily specials, soups, and appetizers. Main entrees are $9-12. Their menu is pretty big. Check it out.

Yelp
VARENYK HOUSE - YOU ARE PURE AWESOME SAUCE! REAL TALK: I saw this place featured on Jaeki Cho's TikTok, and I knew I had to check this place out when I was visiting! This small Ukrainian deli and grocery store, nestled in Ridgeoowd, offers a wonderful selection of varenyky, meats, cold and hot dishes, and even a daily hot buffet that's usually available closer to noon. You can also find desserts (blintzes), housemade compotte, salads, soups, and main dishes (such as plov, stuffed cabbage, sea bass), and even vegetarian options!). We ordered: +the Potato varenyky +the Beef Short Rib varenyky +Housemade Compotte +Housemade Uzvar The varenyky were out of this world! You have your choice of them being boiled or fried, and you can opt of 8 or 16 pieces; we opted for them being fried and went for the 8 pieces - should have ordered the larger order, as these were just SO SO SO GOOD! Think of them as more of a bite-sized pierogi, jam-packed with a generous filling - they come with apple sauce, sour cream, and fried onions, which all added even more of a magical touch. Super addicting! The housemade compotte was made with cherries and other fruit, while the uzvar was made with dried fruit - both came in large 'tubs' and were refreshing. Stepan was very welcoming and shared a lot of the different items that they offer, and you can tell that everything is made and prepared with love - wished we lived in the neighborhood, as we would frequent this place often! Support this local gem of a business - you won't be disappointed! +ask for Stepan! +delicious varenyky! +deli and hot & cold dishes available!

Yelp
Please note this is NOT a sit down restaurant, they no longer sell hot food. It's a bummer when you walk in hungry af and don't realize it! But they have such a variety of great food, its worth it to buy the frozen stuff and take it home.

Anya B.

Yelp
Outstanding authentic Ukranian food. Borscht and cherry dumplings are my favorite. Highly recommend.

Nathan S.

Yelp
Wonderful place. Great borscht. Nice brimstone smells. The menu is small but efficient

Yelp
Never had Ukrainian food before, absolutely delicious, the owner was really nice. It's clean and sells fresh bread, meats as well as groceries. They have a delicious buffet in the back. The pea soup has this amazing Smokey aftertaste.

Cliff L.

Yelp
This place is amazing. The food feels so nourishing. The flavor is spot on. A true gem in ridgewood

Cindy H.

Yelp
The food is delicious! I felt like we walked into a Ukrainian/Russian home. The food tasted like it was made with love. The sausages are amazing, the fried fish, the stuff cabbage, wonderful soup, bread. Everything was so good. The portion size were big and we had left overs. They also sell all kind of frozen perogies with different fillings. Service was excellent too! We will be back!

Yelp
I have tried several things now and am absolutely overjoyed that I discovered this place and how fortunate I am to live close enough to it that I can treat myself to some of my most favorite Ukrainian meals that bring me comfort and allow me to reminisce. My grandma made the best pyrohy and stuffed cabbage (holubtsi) and yet, I have to tell you that Varenyk House actually does it even better. The meat stuffed cabbage is phenomenal! I love the Ukrainian platter because it's comes with all of the essentials: varenyk, kovbasa, stewed carrot kapusta (sour kraut), and a choice of meat or vegetable stuffed cabbage. Now, I'm Ukrainian, so I always have sour cream at home and while they give you the appropriate portion, I like a bit more and have a little on my fork when I take a bite with some of everything together and it's utter perfection. I also love the blintzes and have had the blueberry and the strawberry with cheese. They don't just provide you with sauce on the side (which in itself is superb and fantastic) but the blintzes inside have the cheese and fruit. Yum! I enjoy my varenyky crispy so will order it fried to enjoy when that is all I'm eating, but like it simple and boiled in the Ukrainian platter. Regardless of which varenyky you choose, you will be extremely satisfied. If you enjoy a nice chicken cutlet, then this is the place to get it and you can't go wrong with the most delicious mashed and choice of two salads. The prices are incredibly reasonable and the quality is top notch. Finding Varenyk House at the beginning of 2022 has so far been through best thing to happen to me!!! I would recommend this place to both novice and experienced foodies whether you're familiar with the cuisine of my family and ancestors or not. You will not be disappointed and tell them Lesley sent you!! I'm happy to answer questions and I know they love educating people about Ukrainian food. When owners have passion like these do, I will do anything to support their business!!

Yelp
This food was amazing! We got a little bit of everything and it was all outstanding. I highly recommend the stuffed cabbage! Glory to Ukraine!

Yelp
I bought frozen sauerkraut pierogies. I usually eat freshly made. They were good, but they would taste better if the sauerkraut was fried with onions inside the pierogies. Seems as though they opened a can of salty sauerkraut & added carrots. The dough was kinda thick. I wont buy again for $11.00. Definitively not worth it. Ukrainians know a good Pierogie. The store is very clean. The lady is oh so very nice. I may try something else next time I passby.Dont get me wrong I'm sure everything there is delicious,so you should go & visit this place.

Felix L.

Yelp
Fresh fresh fresh! Everything we have tried so far has been freshly made and delicious. Some things remind me of how my grandma used to make them. Not a giant store so the selection is not like a Netcost but what they do have has been good so far. Also a great selection of frozen dumplings.

Rowena E.

Yelp
Great local spot in Queens if you don't want to venture out to Manhattan for Ukrainian food. Staff was super friendly and kind. The stuffed cabbage was really good! It's right near the M train and we'll definitely be back,

Caleb M.

Yelp
Great Ukrainian steam table and pierogi! The pork dish on kasha with a side of beet salad is incredible and very inexpensive - and yes it fills you up nicely! The owner and staff are great, they walk you through their menu. There is definitely something for everyone in this unique Ukrainian deli.

J C.

Yelp
Tried out this place yesterday. Not knowing anything about Ukrainian food; I was hesitant to walk in and order. But the man behind the counter was excellent. He explained the dishes to me, provided recommendations and even have my friend and I a sample of soup to try. I will definitely be back to try the pierogis and the blintzes! Heads up you should call and order in advance because they make it fresh! The Danish was excellent and again very good customer service.

Nick E.

Yelp
Great Ukrainian shop on FPR. In addition to offering a wide range of packaged imported foods and an amazing selection of sausages and other meats, they have s buffet of hot foods to go in the back of the store. I had the stuffed cabbage which was the best I've ever had, pork sausage, and the soup of the day which was Zukek, a sour Polish soup with white sausage and potatoes. Really good flavor. The owner takes time to explain all the dishes which is appreciated because I'm not too familar with Ukrainian cuisine. Highly suggest giving this place try. You won't be disappointed

Yelp
Quality, freshness, portion-size and flavors of meals are simply amazing. This place is an absolute gem. I will definitely be back. Friendly atmosphere.

Yelp
Stuffed cabbages are AMAZING!!!! Nice selections. Definitely will try other options available.

Yelp
Excellent Ukrainian and Polish food preparing on permises, everything delicious !!!! I prefer home made sausages and salo

Yelp
Stephan provided a feast for my 81st birthday party. Everything was perfect and was enjoyed by all my family. We were 16 very happy people. Unfamiliar with Ukranian food I relied on Stephan to plan our menu. From the very interesting appetizing canapès, the soup- borscht and zurek, stuffed cabbage, liver cake, chicken Kyiv, bigos, roast pork, sauerkraut and the delightful varenyky. We dined like royalty. Each dish was labeled and had instruction for heating and serving. A wonderful celebration to remember.

Asor A.

Yelp
I visited this place a couple times while visiting New York. Delicious, homemade foods and friendly service! I had the lunch takeout special (huge meatballs with two types of salads), the herring under a fur coat in the refrigerated section (delicious, good size container), and the sausage from the counter. Everything was fresh, yummy, and a great price! If I lived here I'd go all the time!

J R.

Yelp
Delisish dishes. Great for ready food for lunch or dinner. Have frozen items, which are easy to cook. Sweets are good too. Very nice staff.
