Boston’s Best Scorpion Bowls and Other Giant Cocktails to Share - Eater Boston

"Variety Bar is part of the Comedy Studio at Somerville’s Bow Market, supplying tasty beverages to those attending a show at the Studio as well as any other Bow Market goers wandering in. The two scorpion bowl options are priced at $25 and $30, with the former nodding to the Hong Kong classic (check that out elsewhere on this map) and made with “rums, juice, and nostalgia.” The latter adds cognac and orgeat. For anyone craving the fun of a scorpion bowl without the booze, there’s also the pseudoscorpion for $14 — citrus shrub, orgeat, and sparkling water." - Rachel Leah Blumenthal

Yeah the place is cute and it was nice to be inside and out of the cold, but the service was bad. We asked our server for a few more minutes and she never came back, the host ended up taking our order. Our drinks were strong and took way too long to get to us. I ended up sending mine back and asking for a normal cocktail, but they don't have peach schnapps (which is a pretty basic liquor) so I got a margarita. That took another 15 minutes to get to me and it was also strong. And then at the end of the night, we see the 20% auto gratuity, I did not think the service was deserving of 20%

Place worked out great when we wanted some afternoon cocktails. Servers were all friendly. Drinks were very good. Back room is more of a dark club feel, front room was very chill and offered a different vibe, depending what you are in the mood for!

This little bar was well designed, referred to as the "Ski Resort". All was well. Menu stated $10 for this 16oz beer, $12 for that 16oz beer. Ok I can do that. Go to order and they add a tax, okay fine. Then I see a $28,xx amount due while I was paying cash. I question it and they go on to say there is an AUTOMATIC, required 20% GERTUITY CHARGE. What a silly operation.

When you order online, at checkout it prominently shows you options for tipping (15%, etc.) so you naturally pick one. The next day when you're confused by your credit card bill and look carefully at your receipt you notice the "tip" is in addition to a 20% "Auto gratuity". Makes you feel very deliberately ripped off.

$60+ for 3 drinks and some club crackers with cheese. They include a 20% tip into your bill automatically and when you go to check out they ask for an additional 15%. Read the fine print.

I paid over $16 for a small margarita in a plastic cup. The margarita was $13 and then they added an automatic 20% service even though we were picking up the margarita ourselves at the counter.

LOVED the coziness of the space and friendly staff

Sloppy interior, low effort. slow service. Espresso martini tastes like coffee. Skip!
