The 38 Best Kuala Lumpur Restaurants | Eater

"This cafe is situated in a stark black building that dates to 1927, when it housed the wardens of the neighboring Pudu Jail. Despite the foreboding exterior, the building is home to aromatic cups of coffee and all-day breakfast fusion dishes served amid stylish, homey decor. Don’t forget to try the signature soft-shell crab burger. [$$$]" - Ian Poh Jin Tze

Google
A discreet and fantastic place for morning coffee. Order a light breakfast as having a heavy lunch later and it never disappoint. Generous serving of avocado and so well done. The coffee is amazing. Will have a full bf for my next trip! Excellent customer service. A big thanks !

Google
This was the first coffee shop we visited in KL, and we’ll definitely be coming back! The food was exceptional — we highly recommend the Big Breakfast and the Soft Shell Crab Burger. Every element on the plate felt thoughtfully crafted and full of flavor. The baristas were incredibly kind and enthusiastic, especially when we asked about the coffee. Their hospitality made the experience even more enjoyable. Thank you for such a pleasant and memorable visit!

Google
We found this place through a food blog written about the Best Brunch places in KL and decided to give it a try. This was probably one of the best breakfast meals we have had in our lives. We shared the French toast and Philadelphia Chicken and Waffles- which flavors were out of this world. The coffee was also amazing- we had an iced coffee and an iced latte. Our entre and coffee were so great we decided we had to try their lemon tart- which was also to die for. If you are in KL- this place is a must try. The food was literally an experience-truly full of flavor. I am still thinking of this French toast after three days. Don’t hesitate- go try this place, promise you won’t regret it.

We also went to other similar cafes Freeka and Broom. VCR was our favourite. The cooking is a level above the others. Every element had flavour and was well seasoned. Nice environment with pleasant music and friendly staff. We came here twice. Enough said.

Google
Overall pricey. Carbonara taste is mild and the generous amount of duck cubes complimented the whole dish. Truffle fries are good, crispy on the outside soft in. Soft shell crab and hot latte is not bad.

Google
Every time I come to KL I make an effort to have breakfast here. The food never disappoints and the staff are always friendly. This time I had the truffle scrambled eggs with salmon and an oat cappuccino. Quality food with the price tag as well ! 🤣 Nonetheless well worth it! Do try out the espresso tonic, a refreshing caffeinated beverage

Google
Good vibe and music playlist. The food and coffee is excellent! Even though the price is above average, it was worth it because we get to chat a lot with the baristas about coffee. Will come back here if I visit KL again.

Google
This is my second time coming here for lunch after a long time, and the service is still disappointing and bad as usual. There is no waiter service upstairs, and the Malay waitress had a cold attitude with no sense of customer service. If the service charge were optional, I definitely wouldn’t pay it. The food is ok and average, with nothing particularly impressive. With so many other cafe choices available, I won’t be coming back to this cafe again!🙃

Yelp
We walked 1.5 miles here as it has good review. Some staff are very friendly and polite, a few are just doing their job. We had waffle and French toast. They were great. Flat white and Expresso are good too. Nice atmosphere. I wish we knew of upstairs when we sat down. Downstairs is small space plus right by the ordering counter so seemed a bit busy traffic by us.

Yelp
The food was really good, the coffee was good, but the service was very slow. We had to wait for awhile just to get water and then the server only brought us one glass (there were two of us). It's a cool place but it was SO loud - not really a coffee shop, chill vibe.

Yelp
I visited VCR on a blisteringly hot day, but came here on the recommendation of a Malaysian coffee and food blogger! Despite the oppressive heat that my weak San Franciscan self was dying from, the delicious, hot coffee here was worth every drip of sweat! The baristas were really friendly, the vibe of the place was very modern and pristine, and the coffee was rich, flavorful, and just the right strength! We ordered a bunch of sweets and thought each of the baked goods were good, but overall the main value for me was the relaxing vibe this place oozed. We ended up sitting in this shop for a couple hours cooling off from the heat, warming up again with coffee, and then lounging around to plan the rest of our tourist itinerary. Definitely visit this place if you want to try a great cup in a calming atmosphere!

Yelp
Food was great - had the softshell crab and coffee. Really crowded though on weekends

Yelp
If you are looking for an instagrammable cafe, this is one of it. I am not a coffee lover, but still love the ambience here.

Yelp
What kind of Yelp employee am I? I didn't even know that Yelp had reviews piling up in KL, but thankfully (and as always) Yelp steered me in the right direction for breakfast at VCR. Delicious, delicious, delicious! From the coffee to the perfectly poached eggs I loved each and every sip. We enjoyed our breakfast on the top floor with a view of the trees as the tables around us sipped their drinks and worked on their laptops. My jet lag is certainly playing a factor in me not remembering all of the exact details but one thing is resonating loud and clear. I loved this place and you best believe, I'll be back!
google avatar

Brittney C.

Yelp
Enjoyed this place just wish it was a little bit bigger. You walk in and stand in line to order then they bring your food to your table. Not a fan of that process just because the place really only seats about 20 - 30 people. The food was good though and the tea was great!
google avatar

Ayaka W.

Yelp
Passionate coffee maker and cafe owner. It's a neighbor cafe serve good coffee. Price is average, no table service but it's acceptable. Their cake is good as well.
google avatar

Whitney B.

Yelp
Service was excellent and the ambiance was all right. A bit hipster and rustic. I went out of my way to Uber here based off the great reviews all over Google and Yelp. The breakfast dish I had looked like it came out of a starter pack Sims breakfast meal. You know, the level wherein all you can afford in your place is a cot, stained wallpaper, a sink, and you're gardening for pennies on the hour. That's exactly how it felt going down, too. I'm not 100% sure if I ordered completely the wrong thing. If ever I'm in Kuala Lumpur again, I'm not sure I'll make the trip to visit VCR.
google avatar

Yelp
A good place to chill. The food is good. Laptop free environment. That was satisfying

Yelp
VEGAN OPTIONS - Yes. Soy milk is +2 MYR up charge. It's been challenging to find non-dairy milk in KL coffee shops. I called ahead to make certain that they had soy, and made my way over to VCR for a cappuccino. This place is 2 levels, with A/C. You order at the counter, grab your number, and then select a seat. They bring your food and drinks to you after that. Free WiFi is available, which is always welcome for those with no data roaming. My cappuccino was made very well, and my companion got a mocha with the house made syrup, which was also quite good. We didn't order any food, but we saw several dishes served to other tables and it all looked good! I would definitely return in the future because the consistency of the drinks were on point, and it's a solid choice in the area. Also, super friendly staff!

Yelp
Thoroughly enjoyed my meal at VCR. It is a nice self serve coffee house type restaurant. You seat yourself, then go place your order and pay. KL is extremely cheap in general so I had no qualms about the price. Service was very quick as well. I had the soft shell crab egg sandwich. DELICIOUS! One star off because either they don't take cards or the card machine was down. If I am back in KL I would definitely check it out again.
google avatar

Yelp
Great trendy breakfast nook. I love the original shop house. I bet there's a story about how come it's surrounded by ugly high rises! I feel like I could walk outside and I'd be in Williamsburg. Brooklyn, that is. I had the VCR Breakkie. It was quite good. I never saw lamb bolognese in my life! Coffee was great. Not much of a menu, but this approach allows a quality presentation on the items served. There's something for every hipster that will be down for this.
google avatar

Marwa A.

Yelp
I'm visiting KL and this place is by far the best i've been to for good coffee, desserts, and breakfast! All customers get wifi and they really take their time with making your meal. They pay so much attention to detail but don't make you wait tooo long. I came back two more times and definitely will continue to throughout my stay in Malaysia. The seating is also great. It's a two level cafe and it's pretty spacious and beautiful!
google avatar

Ray Ray S.

Yelp
It's been difficult finding non-dairy milk alternatives in KL. Many coffee shops only serve 'fresh milk'. Well I'm happy to report that VCR came through with soy milk for the mocha. The chocolate for the mocha was prepared in-house. Flavors were perfect, not overly sweet. I suggest you stop by this spot on a hot and rainy day and enjoy a coffee in the A/C.
google avatar

Yelp
This coffee shop is awesome if you're an A grade coffee lover or homemade cake lover. Both are on offer here. We had lattes, they sadly don't offer skim or nonfat milk, only whole, but we got them anyway. The beans were delicious and probably the best we had the whole time in Kuala Lumpar. I loved the environment at this place too, very chill and relaxed. Very modern feel inside and plenty of space for relaxing or hanging out over a coffee and cake. Staff is also very friendly and speaks english. They also have a really friendly and sweet kitten on the patio that will greet you and hangout with you during your visit! She slept on my lap the whole time we were outside on the patio, made my day! We will definetly be back if we are in Kuala Lumpar again.

Yelp
Went to this fine establishment on a Sunday afternoon for brunch. The place is crowded. Good menu with a decent number of options. It's an order and pay before you seat yourself. It's a short distance from a large mall. Large hot latte was delicious. The VCR breakie was nice and filling. I'd return to try the French toast.

Yelp
In Kuala Lumpur for the weekend with friends and stopped by here for breakfast, twice! VCR just so happened to be a few minutes from where I stayed so I walked here in the mornings. I've had their flat white, french toast, orange juice, brownie, cake, soft shelled crab burger, potato waffle, and turkish eggs. Always got take away so never got the full experience but would expect it to be much better if I dined in. I will admit, on first impression, VCR was ok. The decor was lovely, and such a hipster cafe like the ones I've been to in Aus. The take away cups for coffee was about the same size as the size of my palm, the same as in Aus! What was quite disappointing though was that my flat white was only half filled in the cup, which could be compared to two shots of espresso. The food definitely made up for it. Their food was so good. Their baked goods were just alright in comparison. Definitely get their food options if you come here! The potato waffle had a perfect consistency where you didn't need syrup and went nicely with the mushrooms. The turkish eggs had a tomato taste and the eggs came runny. If you don't like either of those things, I would suggest to try something else. You can also let them know how you like your eggs if that is a problem! The french toast was soft and tasted of cinnamon which went superbly with the espresso ice cream. Yum, ice cream with every meal! For my second meal, I had the soft shelled crab burger which was absolutely delicious. I've never really had soft shelled crab before but it was so good with that runny egg inside. Strangely it was my favorite meal in KL. Would defos come again if I were to go to KL again!

Yelp
Love this coffee shop & their atmosphere. I came here for the first time and I've decided to give their big breakfast + avocado toast a try. I was browsing through the menu and most of their breakfast dishes price are around RM10++.
google avatar

Gouthaman K.

Yelp
This place is heaven if you're into good coffee (and cats - they have this adorable cat at the entrance that always seems to be fast asleep). I came to VCR every day during my stay in KL and enjoyed almost everything they had to offer. Here's a list of what I've tried here: - Avocado Toast (delicious, would order again) - French Toast (a bit too heavy with ice cream et al -- definitely an indulgence and a good one at that) - Croissant (they serve it with blueberry jam and butter. It's also fresh. I love it!) - Potato Waffles. This was mostly meh. Probably my least favourite of the lost. Coming to coffees, they do a solid Cappuccino. I had quite a bit of their filter/drip coffee -- mostly the Hario V60 - and enjoyed most of the beans they had on offer. Bottomline - five stars. Also the best coffee I had in town by miles.
google avatar

Yelp
A delicious place for breakfast and coffee - just like a Melbourne cafe! The service was great even on a busy Saturday morning and we were informed how long our wait would be. A good time to order a latte or flat white! Although my gluten free options were limited as most menu items included bread, the chef prepared a scrumptious breakfast with scrambled eggs, salmon with chili flakes and truffle oil. It was easy to explain what I could and couldn't eat and I had no adverse reactions from the food. Another great place to enjoy a gluten free breakfast in KL!
google avatar

Yelp
Nice and clean space! Surf and turf breakfast and the pulled beef sandwich was on point!

Yelp
first visit kl cafe shop. My lovely cousin treat me to went there try their food n drinks. This cafe shop is house pattern to selling their food. Besides, exterior design is black and the limited parking and it's near by swiss garden hotel. ok lest talk about their food. I was read many review or blog from other people eat previous time and they recommended to the dessert so call ' the King' . I'm a person dun like to eat banana flavor. When my cousin order the cake. First have a bit is so so so nice . I can't how to describe the taste . Can try ~~

Yelp
We found this place when we were perusing the bukit bintang area for a brunch plane, and were pleasantly surprised! I ordered the Turkish eggs, which were delicious and tomato-y, and was complimented well with the sourdough bread. The flat white was I ordered was good, not too bitter or milky. My only (big) criticism is that the portions are so small! Both my friend and I were still hungry afterwards, and had to order another dish. For 24rm I expected a bigger portion size!

Yelp
It's my second time here, the 1st time I'm here, it was a Sunday afternoon, the atmosphere was totally different from day and night. It's a nice hipster looking cafe located in the city center. Is it quite spacious with 2 floors both with indoors and outdoors. Love the huge glass windows on the top floor, which makes the space much more spacious that it is. Great for taking pictures, and ootds:) Drinks and cakes are quite alright, and affordable price. It would be a nice cafe to chill if you are in the city centre. They open till 11pm, compared to a lot of cafes in kl they only till 9pm or so. One thing about here is it could be quite noisy, as it's always packed, not really a place to read or do your work on a weekend. Other than that, it's a great place to hang out with friends!
google avatar

Jimmy K.

Yelp
Go with the VCR big breakfast. We shared it and added some scrambled eggs and bacon. It was all of 5 Stars! Thank you VCR. Keep up the great work!
google avatar

Neeshan M.

Yelp
Love the breakfasts here. The packaging is really nice when delivered home, and the food is always delicious!
google avatar

Yelp
Great coffee place in KL! This pretty industrial-style café opend two years ago just around the corner of hotel Paloma Inn. They serve good coffee, free WiFi and the ambiance is relaxed! Every morning we stop by for a shot of cafeine. If you are in the neighborhood don't forget to drop by.
google avatar

Weinye C.

Yelp
I think this is a really good place to come, bring your laptop and get some work done. It's really quiet and have ample of seats downstairs and upstairs. My friend and I came here to grab a quick drink as he was nearby my place (I'm a 2min drive away from VCR). He had a long black (RM13?) and I had a cold brew (RM15). It wasn't great and it wasn't bad. A little on the pricey end and it was just okay. I would come here again mainly for the convenience since it's so close to me. Not so much for the coffee. They had some cakes in the display but nothing really caught my eye. Would definitely try some if I ever drop by here again.
google avatar

Sarah X.

Yelp
Favourite spot to get my work done. Really cool place with nice ambiance. Workers are friendly, and very helpful every time I'm not sure what to get/order. Definitely in mu top five list, and worth trying!
google avatar

Sharon M.

Yelp
Delicious food, awesome atmosphere. Great place to get work done. My favorites are the avocado toast, the crab burger, and the freshly squeezed orange juice but really you can't go wrong with any menu item!
google avatar

Aja N.

Yelp
KLs best place for coffee!!Slightly run down and grimy, oh so minimalist, hipster down to the cardboard box signage ( have they had the same box since opening?!? HOW do they weatherproof it? What sorcery). Food good too and love the singing chefs in the kitchen. Parking is crap so don't go and try it. Too many people already.
google avatar

Mashel M.

Yelp
Absolute must try for breakfast when in KL. the coffee was divine and loved the soft shell crab Benedict. The ambiance was urban and hipster.
google avatar

Joanna N.

Yelp
I would have never expected a cafe to be located in this area but my waze told me otherwise. VCR has a really great interior design, especially on its second floor where there were seats on their balcony. It has a really hipster vibe in general. I've had their flat white and mocha before and both tasted quite good. The cakes there are quite moist and aren't bad at all. Some of the seats and tables can be quite low but it is not uncomfortable. The only sad thing is that the choices for savory food on their menu is quite limited.
google avatar

Shuen P.

Yelp
One of my coffee-crazed friend have been telling me that this places serve great coffee and how great their coffee is. That it is a must visit if I am going café-hoping. So, during my study break (which is also café-hopping time), I went to give it a try and at the same time chill there to study for my upcoming paper. I had their latte and a piece of cake named 'The King'. Their latte was alright, I am not a professional coffee drinker. So, as long the coffee is smooth to my liking, I am contented. However, what makes me come back for more is 'The King'. It's a peanut butter, banana and chocolate cake. Usually I don't take anything that comes with banana in it but not this one. To me, 'the King' is the MUST-TRY item if you happen to visit VCR.
google avatar

Eunice C.

Yelp
Without the guidance of my friends, I think I will definitely be lost as VCR is situated in a secluded area. To my surprise, it is a small shop lot (more of a house which was turned into a shop). Oh, they call it the "little black house". That makes much sense! First impressions are very lasting. So I thought "Wow! How are they going to accommodate so many customers at once?" It's true that we waited quite long for a place to sit. I can say that the wait is worth it because as you spring open the doors of VCR, you will be able to smell the rich coffee aroma, and the display of desserts looks awesome! As we ordered our desserts and drinks over the counter, the counter girl was very friendly and accommodating as she recommended us their signature delicacies. For cakes, we ordered the Poppy Seed Cake and Blueberry Cheesecake. Wahlaaaa, we couldn't succumb the fact that we wanted more Poppy Seed Cake. It was that good! As for drinks, I had Iced Chocolate. It looked like Milo (so I thought it's going to taste like one, but no it was surprisingly good!). It wasn't too sweet or too bland. All in all, my friends enjoyed our get together in VCR. I will definitely make another visit in the near future.
google avatar

Ian L.

Yelp
There are too many cafes seem to capitalize on the hipster culture. At first glance, VCR seems like the type of café hipsters like to hang out - remodel from a heritage building with an all-black façade. However, the coffees are quite decent here with an extensive choice of desserts. Crowd, as you'd expect are mainly young'uns and sometimes teenagers. VCR isn't without allure, but there are so many other cafes which serve equally good coffees in town. Unless you are nearby, there's no point coming all the way down town for a coffee here.
google avatar

Penny W.

Yelp
VCR is hands down my favourite café in down town. I go there so often, it is known as my second home on the weekends because it is my study place. The place is quite easy to locate and there are parking spots available behind or beside the building. I think the best spots to sit are the tables beside the huge window where there are natural sunlight beaming in. Sometimes, there is a small vase of baby breath flowers near the windows, which I love. Usually I will order a cup of hot latte (sometimes I wish it was milkier) or any of the Tapping Tapir Natural Sodas. They have various types of soda flavor but on the downside it is quite pricey. I have also tried VCR Big Breakfast and the portion is big enough to be eaten by two people. Plus point! They are able to cook the eggs in any style. Yummy (:
google avatar

Patricia P.

Yelp
Great place for events, very cosy and comfy. Coffee was good, though parking can be a problem.

Yelp
Finally, this restaurant has show up. This is the best restaurant i ever seen in my life. Because of what? because of their food :D. As we know, Most of the Malaysian for are spicy right? and Malaysia known as the best spicy food. This restaurant provide many delicious food such as, Nasi Lemak Spicy, Kambing Golek, Ayam Tempura and many more! In Conclusion, I will recommend people to go KL to eat food from this restaurant, because they give cheap price, not like the other restaurant.
google avatar

Shi Fong L.

Yelp
it's my favourite cafe around kl area. I really like their coffee and cakes! you can try their salted waffles as well. as this cafe is nearby time square, behind police station, it will only have limited car park space available. you will spotted this cafe easily as it looks like little black house and a cat lay outside the shop. Remember try their best sell cake- The King. It's peanut cream + banana cake. It tastes different and you will surprise for the texture. Mocha and latte are nice as well. VCR is photo friendly cafe. :) Will I revisit? Always want to.
google avatar

Paisley S.

Yelp
Many cafes promise amazing latte art and do not deliver. VCR is not one of those places. My mocha had the most beautiful latte art I've seen and it tasted just as good as it looked. The interior and the atmosphere is amazing. There is an upstairs section which has a shipping container-esque look to it, with a lot of windows and an outdoor section. It started downpouring and it was so nice to listen to the rain outside on this metal roof. The rest of the cafe is in a regular building with a minimalist vibe and pretty windows to look out of. I highly recommend. The staff is incredibly nice and their menu has a good combo of savory and sweet. No one bothers you if you sit here for hours on your laptop... WiFi is great! UPDATE: I came for the second time. PLEASE try their unagi dish. I ate it all within seconds it was so delicious. It was a croissant sandwich with unagi and pomegranate seeds. An amazing combo. Also, I tried their other location earlier today (not listed on YELP), and it seems to have more of a food focus. The neighborhood it is in has more to offer but I prefer the atmosphere of this location best.
google avatar

Stephanie S.

Yelp
Cool vibe, good WiFi connection, and hands down the best meal I've had in months - if you like salmon, get the Surf'n'Turf! You won't regret it.
google avatar

Alison E.

Yelp
So good we came here three times during our three-day stay in Kuala Lumpur! We struggled to find a breakfast/brunch place that not only had bomb food, but also a comfortable atmosphere! The look and feel of this place is super hip and cozy. The staff is extremely friendly and takes special care in each and every order. I ordered the same thing everyday, french toast and hot chocolate and it was to die for! The french toast was so fresh and they put their individual flare on it with a homemade raspberry sauce and warm crushed cookie crumble!!! DELICIOUS! And the homemade hot chocolate was super creamy and rich! Seriously the best breakfast you can find in Kuala Lumpur!
google avatar

Adam P.

Yelp
Love love love this place. It's really the first cafe in KL I've felt really comfortable in. World class coffee and food, reasonable service and a nice fitout which also caters to people who might need to set up their laptop. I grabbed a cappuccino and granola and was happy with both, although the granola was a little on the small side for my appetite. Definitely worth a visit when in town.
google avatar

Lucie B.

Yelp
We checked out VCR for Saturday brunch as we were staying near by. The building itself is cool and different to KL's normal cafes. Inside it reminds me of the kind of places you'd find in Melbourne or Auckland. It's spacious and a mish-mash of old and modern with a clean design. It is definitely a busy place on a Saturday at mid-day, so you'll probably have a hard time finding a table if you come in a group. We had to sit at the large table with other people which is no problem as it was still big enough to have some privacy but a table to ourselves would have been preferable. We ordered the potato waffle, Turkish eggs and some OJ. Both our brunch dishes were good but nothing amazing. They have fast wifi and cosy spaces with large tables so I imagine if you stop by on a weekday when it's less busy, it would be a nice place to spend some time chatting or doing some work.
google avatar

Rachel R.

Yelp
Finally got to try the cakes and these are amazing! The yuzu cheesecake was the perfect dense texture with the right amount of citrus, while The Elvis was also amazing! (Banana cake with peanut butter frosting - what's not to love?!) Both were fresh and delicious!
google avatar

David B.

Yelp
Great coffee shop if you are interested in coffee made the right way. I opted for a Hario 360 brew of Costa Rica coffee and it was delicious. The food is great too. I tried the Squash Toast - roasted Squash, onion jam, English smoked sausage and sourdough toast. I highly recommend VCR.
google avatar

John W.

Yelp
What a cool place! Coffee here is top notch, and made with attention to detail as any good coffee should be! Atmosphere is airy and refreshing, and spacious with two levels. The coffee I had was v60 style and it was the BEST v60 coffee I have ever had anywhere in the world. That's impressive! That said it was an expensive damn cup of coffee... but worth every penny.
