"‘Earth-friendly dining’ is the mission of Vegan Ramen UZU. The interior artwork, created by art collective teamLab based on their theme of ‘Interconnection between humans and nature and each other’, is a perfect fit for the cuisine. Digital art that reverses left and right on the black tables, and India-ink writing on the walls, speak of harmony between nature and food, and the beauty of all creation. Guests all dine at the same table, underscoring the message that we must live and prosper together." - Michelin Inspector

Tokumaru

"Though he apprenticed in kaiseki, the chef became captivated by the freedom à la carte dishes gave him. To create a restaurant where the customer comes first, he crafted a menu with a full range of options. Potato salad combines beef with pickled turnip, the better to serve as a drinking snack. Sweetfish sushi uses roasted sweetfish paired with vinegared rice seasoned with Japanese pepper. The rice ball with eel tempura filling is an idiosyncratic touch. As the conversation flows with the amiable owner-chef, time flows by in a comfortable mood." - Michelin Inspector

Booked very much in advance for an excellent dining experience. Everything was beautifully presented and flavourful. Was slightly annoyed that we turned up early and the person in front of us without a reservation was seated first. Service was friendly and professional. An unique vegan dining experience

While the food itself was decent, it was slightly underwhelming. The yuku sake was the star of the show; I liked it so much I asked for a refill. The yatsuhashi was interesting. The ramen was yummy but not super memorable. This is definetely one of those places where the dining experience > actual food.

If you ask me, fifty bucks for a four course dinner AND a unique dining experience at the first green star in the ramen category in this year’s Michelin Guide for Kyoto/Osaka is a steal. Flavors are more subtle ofc as this is a vegan meal, but just as complex and savory. It felt a little silly with how “arty” the experience started but I just giggled and went along with it. Superb dining experience, and especially a must-do if you’re vegan in Kyoto. As mentioned in previous posts, don’t arrive early or if you do then take a lap around the neighborhood.

I loved my experience at this restaurant- and yes, I have read the bad reviews, but I can't relate to any of them. The food was delicious, the atmosphere was truly nice, even if a bit dark for my taste, and the staff was incredibly friendly. If I'm ever in Kyoto again I will be going again!

Spectacular small restaurant. Amazing ambience. The table only sits 16 guests. The atmosphere is serene. Food is delicious. Highly recommend.

Everything we had here was delicious and immaculately presented by the friendly and helpful staff. The single giant table, whilst aesthetically striking, did detract from the relaxation aspect! Overall an experience I would recommend if you can stomach the price.

Great experience until the folks around us started to get picky with their food. Place sits 16 guests and we only had 2 other parties there - the entrance is beautiful and the arrangement of the mirrors make it seem very grand and intimate. However we were the only party to not have our ramen when all other parties were served. The service otherwise was great, Yuzu Sake drink is amazing, first two appetizers had more complexity and elegance than the ramen. I think great effort and execution just the ramen was missing the pop. First two dishes give you a high expectation of what’s to come next, just had to be let down slowly I guess.

I went to this place twice in the past year. What they serve is definitely not traditional, but the overall quality is very good and uses Japanese ingredients and flavors well. If you are a vegan visiting Kyoto and want something other than shojin ryori, tofu/yuba or Western/Indian veg, then it's well worth visiting. Make sure you book in advance if you want to dine during peak hours. The price includes two drinks, so not that unreasonable.
