"‘Earth-friendly dining’ is the mission of Vegan Ramen UZU. The interior artwork, created by art collective teamLab based on their theme of ‘Interconnection between humans and nature and each other’, is a perfect fit for the cuisine. Digital art that reverses left and right on the black tables, and India-ink writing on the walls, speak of harmony between nature and food, and the beauty of all creation. Guests all dine at the same table, underscoring the message that we must live and prosper together." - Michelin Inspector

Tokumaru

"Though he apprenticed in kaiseki, the chef became captivated by the freedom à la carte dishes gave him. To create a restaurant where the customer comes first, he crafted a menu with a full range of options. Potato salad combines beef with pickled turnip, the better to serve as a drinking snack. Sweetfish sushi uses roasted sweetfish paired with vinegared rice seasoned with Japanese pepper. The rice ball with eel tempura filling is an idiosyncratic touch. As the conversation flows with the amiable owner-chef, time flows by in a comfortable mood." - Michelin Inspector

Atmosphere Dark ambiance with moving art on one wall. The concept is great, but you must turn your head 90 degrees toward the art which forces you to look at other diners. I wish I could enjoy the art casually and with less intention. We should be facing the art. Food and drink They served the best sake I’ve ever had but I’m not a connoisseur. The ice cube was a perfect cube and was its own work of art. See photo. Overall the food was great. The Yatsuhashi (see photo) was stunning as a single mouthful. It was served on a bed of cacao nibs that wasn’t meant to be eaten but I dug in! The norimaki was delish! It was fun making our own handroll. The ramen was tasty. I chose the Spicy Miso and my companion chose the Shoyu. Both delicious. However. I think it’s weird to have 2 small courses served elegantly then bring a giant bowl of ramen as the main. I thought the ramen would be artfully presented. Also, I think they modeled their ramen after teamLab Planet’s ramen and unfortunately the teamLab’s ramen was far superior. Lastly, dessert. They served Kinako ice cream. It. Was. So. Damn. Good.

I can completely understand why this restaurant has earned its Michelin star — everything from the food to the ambience and service was impeccable. Our entrée, the very first dish of the evening, was incredibly flavourful — we only wished there had been a little more of it! The ramen that followed was cooked to absolute perfection: not too soft, not too firm, just the ideal texture. We ordered the mugwort ramen, and the flavour was extraordinary — layered, complex, and evolving as we enjoyed the broth. Each course arrived promptly, which made sense given the 1.5-hour dining window. The website mentions that the restaurant is only open Friday through Monday, but we dined on a Thursday night without issue, so it seems the opening days may vary depending on bookings. It’s exceptionally rare to find a fully plant-based Michelin-starred restaurant, and this one truly delivers. If you’re curious or debating whether to try it, I couldn’t recommend it more highly!

Easily the best ramen I had in Japan. The broth was spicy and bursting with flavor. Really enjoyed the other courses as well (especially the one where we had to make our own hand rolls). The atmosphere and service were excellent as well. Highly recommend making a reservation here for your time in Kyoto!

This was a treat for all of the senses. We were given a fragrance to smell upon entry, and then encased in a dark room lit purely by what teamlab has designed. The vegan food was delicious. Between the pair of us, we had Hojicha, and Sake Yuzu Vegan cheese, served with Yatsuhashi Norimaki (Hand-Rolled Sushi) Ramen: Soy sauce & Fermented Mugwort Ramen: Spicy MISO & Sake kasu Kinako Ice Cream for Dessert. Would recommend to anyone looking to treat themselves in Kyoto! (Please ignore the quality of the photos as they may not come out clearly due to the dark room)

Absolutely amazing vegan ramen! We tried both ramen dishes, and each one was incredible — completely different from traditional ramen but in the best way possible. The flavors were rich, creative, and perfectly balanced. The appetizers were on a fine-dining level, especially the smoked “cheese” — a must-try! Highly recommended, even if you’re not vegetarian

Google
Super unique meal experience! The art display was very interesting and kind of moody (in a fun way) and the food was *fantastic!* The yuzu cocktail was refreshing and unique, the first two courses were scrumptious, the ramen was rich and savory (I liked the spicy ramen better than the regular, but both were good), and the kinako dessert was indulgent and well-balanced. It feels like a really good deal that you get such an elegant and tasty meal for just about $50 USD per person!

Google
Possibly one of the best bowls of ramen I've ever had, period, vegan or otherwise. The broth is somehow unbelievably rich and bursting with intense umami flavor. Atmosphere is also sublime and echoes the peaceful and sustainable Zen Buddhist esthetic that vegan Japanese cooking ("shojin ryori") exemplifies. The satellite location at TeamLab in Tokyo is just as good too! Be sure to make reservations!

I can say that the food and its plate presentation was beyond reproach; amongst some of the most delicious and sophisticated vegan meals I’ve had in Japan or in any other country. Unfortunately, the overall experience was significantly damaged by two aspects. Throughout the meal, staff were relentlessly scrubbing and polishing the glass topped table using rags and spraying the table from plastic spray bottles. For a restaurant that is so particular about the customers not attending with any sort of scent or chemical on their bodies this struck me as particularly odd - but much more, was extremely unappetising and distracted from the entire experience of the meal. Secondly, the toilet is extremely close to and directly in line-of-site from where I was seated. This is really unacceptable and unappealing. A simple curtain to separate the entry passage from the dining area would have made a huge difference for me. As I said, the meal was wonderful; the set up and overall ambient experience not so much.
