VeganBurg was at the top of my MUST-TRY vegan food list when I came to Singapore.
I even took a combination of two MRTs (a 40-minute journey each way) just to get there. That's how keen I was.
VeganBurg is way out near the Eunos MRT, in an area that's not of much interest for the visitor to Singapore (unless you want to check out the brightly-colored Joo Chiat terrace houses nearby to get a taste of Peranakan culture.)
Although the location is unimpressive, VeganBurg does have a super-cute atmosphere with a nice outdoor seating area, plants everywhere, and a nicely-designed menu with eye-catching self-advertising artwork on the walls.
But the food at VeganBurg disappointed me so, so hard. I had MUCH better vegan burgers at NomVNom in the CBD (Clarke Quay), and I'd go there in a heartbeat over VeganBurg.
At VeganBurg, the burger patties are either mushroom-based or soy-based. I'm not a giant fan of mushrooms, so I scanned the menu for one of their soy-patty burgers instead. Their "Hawaiian Teriyaki" burger had a soy-based patty and was marked with the "best-seller" icon so I decided to opt for that.
What a mistake. The burger was completely disgusting. The soy taste of the patty was overwhelming and gross. (And I'm a vegan, so I'm very used to the taste of soy-based mock meats. So this isn't me being some picky carnivore trying mock meat for the first time.) The pineapple taste didn't match well with the taste of the teriyaki (and I also lived in Hawaii, where both pineapple and teriyaki sauce feature prominently in the cuisine). The contents of my burger kept falling out, making for a very messy meal. Bits of the pineapple rind kept getting stuck in my teeth. The seaweed fries were meh, nothing as special or exotic as they sounded. The only drink choices are two flavours of overly sweet punch from a machine. And, ultimately, the food was overpriced for the quality.
Very very disappointed in VeganBurg, especially after my long journey to get there. Maybe the mushroom burgers are better, if you like mushrooms.
