SF Vegefarm Grocery Store Opens With Plant-Based Meat Substitutes - Eater SF

"A new grocery store has entered the fray, serving freezers full of vegetarian and vegan meat substitutes. It is an outpost of a Taiwanese chain called Vegefarm, which has 25 locations with popular products including veggie 'chicken' nuggets, plum 'mimic pork belly', and plant-based imitation ham." - Caleb Pershan

Google
Nice little grocery shop specifically for vegan meat substitutes: jerky and frozen 'meat' of all types produced in Asia. Update: I assumed everything in the store was vegan but most of the frozen 'chunks' are only vegetarian. I recommend reading the ingredients before purchasing.

I wandered in here one day and emerged with some vegetarian chicken after the very nice guy working there offered me a sample. When I made it that night in a stir-fry, my husband commented on how good the chicken was. 😉 They have vegetarian chicken, beef, pork, and fish - sausage, drumsticks, meatballs, tenders… I remember eating at a wonderful vegetarian Chinese restaurant years ago and thinking “If only I could find fake chicken that tasted like this, I’d be a vegetarian.” And now I pretty much am thanks to this place.

Google
This is a vegetarian/vegan grocery. All products are from Taiwan. You will find lots of frozen products and snacks. They also carry frozen dumplings (I love🥟)Highly recommended if you are looking for Asian style home cook vegetarian ingredients.

I used to have to pack my suitcase when I’d go to Taiwan, but so glad I can just come to Vegefarm and get pretty much the same stuff! Lots of great veggie substitute options among other imported stuff hard to find in the US.

Google
It is hard to believe a place this incredible exists! This store offers a wide range of unique and flavorful vegan products at astonishingly low prices. The variety and evident quality take my breath away! Also, the man who helped my sister and I during our visit was knowledgeable, helpful, and nice.

Google
Great mix of vegan and vegetarian. The vegan beef tendon rocks.

This is a very small shop with a good selection of frozen vegetarian specialties and some dry goods. It is located 3 doors down from Walgreens. We made a special trip to visit because my wife had read some good press about this new shop. While my wife browsed, my son and I couldn't wait to get outside because it was 10 degrees or more hotter inside the store than it was on the street. A couple of minutes after we stepped out, my wife had to leave quickly as well after a small purchase because she, too, was suffocating inside the very stuffy store. The owners must add a fan or more to create a more comfortable shopping experience for its visitors.

Google
This is a nice little store (next to the old Shangri-La veg restaurant) with a nice proprietor selling all sorts of dried, frozen, and jarred veg stuff, mostly mock meats and that sort of stuff. I sampled a few and the flavors were really nice!

Yelp
Vegefarm offers many faux and mock meat options in a pure veg natural food store in the Sunset neighborhood of San Francisco. Many options in the refrigerator and in the freezer including veg sausage, vegan fish, imitation bacon, corn soup, and fresh homemade veggie dumplings that are frozen ready to be heated up by simply boiling or steaming them. Recommended to check out if in the neighborhood.

Yelp
The food here is AMAZING. The best vegetarian chicken I have ever had- and I'm not vegetarian, but I'm inching closer because of this place! Prices are fair and the customer service is great.

Yelp
Clean and brightly lit vegetarian/vegan grocery store in the Sunset. I've never seen as large of a selection of vegetarian meat substitutes elsewhere. You know when you're walking in the aisles of a traditional Asian supermarket, like 99 Ranch or the 25th Ave supermarket, and the meat substitutes make up 1-1.5 freezers worth of goods, if that? They've got multiple freezers here, from chest freezers of bulk proteins, to smaller portions of both pre-seasoned and unflavored proteins. As far as I remember, they don't have more Western foods like "chick'n nuggets" or veggie burgers. The prices are super reasonable here too! A 1lb bag of mock beef ran me around 12 bucks and can be used to make around four stir fries or a large batch of stew. They've got so many options under ten bucks so that you can substitute your usual proteins with the vegan form without significantly altering your budget. The person working there is nice and helpful as well, and speaks English. I'm so happy that they're in this area because where else can you find such a well-stocked selection?! Now you can replicate your favorite dishes at home.

Yelp
Nice store with faux meat options. Vegan fish tofu is a nice option- texture is similar to regular fish balls. Easy to pan fry and prepare with whichever seasonings and marinades. Imitation pork floss is tasty with white rice.

Yelp
This is my 100th review, so I wanted to review somewhere special. I thought about another place that is special to me, but that can be viewed as a bit morbid, especially right now, so off I go on reviewing VegeFarm, a vegan market specializing in meat substitute. I brought some meat substitute from VegeFarm months ago. We tried it and thought it was good, but then I kind of forgot about this other bag, eventually with time, it got tucked into the back of the freezer. When this whole shelter in place began, I started thinking about what kind of food we would actually eat. I don't want to buy a lot of (insert food you barely eat), but I also don't want this to be an excuse to stock up on junk food, though a little guilty pleasure (chocolate) is never really a bad thing. :) So while cleaning out the fridge and freezer, I came upon a bag of vegan fish tofu. Okay!?! What was I thinking when I brought this? We stocked up our supplies from a few different markets, but put this bag near the front of the freezer so I will remember to cook it. Tonight, I pan fried the frozen tofu to perfection. Added in some julienned carrots and green beans, cooked some rice to go with it, dinner is ready. The vegan fish tofu tasted delicious. Kind of silky and tasted very much like a fish ball. I'm really thankful for this delicious and healthy meal, and would definitely shop here again once this shelter in place ban is lifted.

Yelp
What a unique gem! This business sells all sorts of delicious vegetarian and vegan meat substitutes as well as dried snacks and noodles (think ramen but way better). Originally a wholesale store in SJ, VegeFarm has since expanded to provide products directly to consumers. We were extremely impressed with the selection and were very glad to see that all products are from Taiwan (which typically has higher health standards than China). Some standouts include the mushroom and soy-based "minced pork sauce" (add it over rice with a hard boiled egg cooked in soy sauce for a vegetarian take on a classic Taiwanese dish) and the "spicy buffalo wings." Although the latter actually didn't taste like buffalo wings at all, it was delicious--almost like a fried chicken nugget with a peppery kick. As the other reviewer noted, a lot of the products would be great for hot pot!

Yelp
Perhaps one of the most veggie-friendly grocery finds in the Bay Area. For those looking to swap out meat for a vegetarian or vegan alternative, this is the place for you. They have vegetarian Taiwanese chicken, Thai chicken, "beef" balls for hot pot, mock shrimp, and so much more. We always visit VegeFarm to find meat replacements for hot pot, curry puffs, soups, and salads. The taste and texture are really nice and fit with the spirit of any dish we're trying to recreate. Also, the pricing is reasonable. For example, we got six vegetarian mock meat products for about $35 dollars. For two to three people, that could allow for four to eight servings of soup or salad per bag. We also turn the beef balls into ground meatless meat, which is enough to fill about 40 curry puffs (per bag). The staff here are very helpful and will share product recommendations too.

Yelp
I'm a vegetarian and this store is my crack. It is a small scale store, compared to Safeway, but they sell what I'd like to eat. Lots of frozen veggie meats. Meat jerky like snacks. Veggie oyster sauce for cooking. It is all Taiwanese style vegetarian food, but as my friend said, Asia does a much better job at flavoring vegetarian fake meat than America does. I'd have to kind of agree. Okay just recently the Impossible Burger came out, but before that, everything tasted so bleh. Next time I go here, I plan to bring my cooler with some ice packs, because I don't live in SF and need to make sure my food holds.

Yelp
There was an article in SF Gate and mentioned this store. A SUPER great find to purchase alternative meat options and healthy products for people who are looking to eat less meat and are vegetarian. The owner is super nice and helpful and offered samples and gave recommendations...all of which I purchased. I tried a sample of his soup stew which he added fish tofu and lamb. The soup was very tasty and I really liked the fish tofu. The selection of frozen products offers quite a large variety, and the owner helped with some favorites of many customers. I have already tried some of the products at home and here's my review. Vegan Fish Tofu A+ the texture and flavor was fresh and delicious when I added to my buckwheat soba noodles. Vege Ribbon Fish A+ the flavor of fish was a surprise and it was wrapped in a thin layer of seaweed, great texture and delicious when I added to my Korean black bean noodle package (Paldo Jjajangmen - see photo). Vege Buffalo Wings A- the texture was similar to a chicken nugget, but much better and great when I cut it up and added to my chow mein noodles made fresh with baby bok choy, char siu, and onions. I would recommend this store for the variety and quality products offered and the owner was very pleasant.

Yelp
I have been looking for affordable vegetarian options, and this is an awesome find! They have a ton of varieties so that I do not have to stick with the usual vegetarian dishes! Heck, I just decided to purchase some snacks to try! I don't have to go all the way to SF Chinatown with far worse parking either! Irving parking isn't good either, but we were lucky with parking this time. Anyway, I have to try the imitation lamb stew! These are definitely unique!

Yelp
Vegefarm is an all vegan mock meat grocery store in the sunset. I am so happy this place exists. It's a cute little shop but has a huge variety of vegan mock meats. Really anything you can think of. We settled on getting fish filets and are excited to make fish tacos. I will certainly be back to try the vegan bacon as well.

Yelp
Hello! I went to this market today and found vegan Asian products like fake vegan ham and fake Asian food for vegans and it's interesting and curated and picked. I decided to get the jar of bamboo shoots for $3.50 because bamboo shoots are always good and yummy and reminds of my mother's pantry when I was a child in maryland. HAHA. Well this shop is on Irving and the cashier speaks maybe 30% English. I didn't know about some of the fridge and freezer items. You have to open the freezer yourself for a look at some dumpling wraps. Interesting and silly new place on Irving for Asian VEGANS.

Yelp
Great selection Of vegetarian foods from Taiwan including meat substitute and other products for hot pot and various other dishes. We just stopped in quickly but I grabbed a few things and plan to come back and grab more. Having the quality of Taiwan made products plus all the selection and the fact that these are the guys that supply most of the restaurants in the area make this a place you should visit if you want to have vegetarian Asian cuisine at home especially hot pot.

Yelp
Best Chinese mock meat retailer in SF city, with high quality mock meats from Taiwan. Food quality is trustworthy, and most importantly, the mock meats taste superb. The mock meats aren't very cheap, but definitely worth it - I greatly prefer the quality and variety at VegeFarm, compared to the sometimes questionable pickings in the Asian grocery stores.

Yelp
I cooked one of my favorite Chinese dishes with VegeFarm beef for the first time tonight, and I have to say it tasted better than the real beef version. (Of course, my parents still make the best version with beef but that's a different story.) I bought a bag of beef substitute and one of fake chicken many months ago shortly after the Chronicle story published. The owner was extremely welcoming and helpful. The cooked samples were delicious so I thought I'd give it a try. Well, the two bags sat in my freezer for months because I wasn't sure what to do with them. Today, I really wanted to have the kind of Braised Beef Stew with daikon my parents used to make. It seemed like a reasonable way to try the VegeBeef in my freezer. Man, it exceeded my expectations. It was just like the real thing but with fake beef! To my surprise, the VegeBeef did not turn to mush. It comes in very uniform nugget-type pieces and retained its shape. Besides the taste, the best thing was it did not feel mushy. It chewed much like real meat. It also browned much like real beef does, and did not fall apart from the stewing process. I think the reason the VegeBeef version turned out better than my real beef version is because the VegeBeef comes pre-seasoned. Anyway, I cannot tell you how satisfying and delicious this was. I will definitely be more adventurous and try VegeFarm products in more of my favorite dishes!

Yelp
LOVE this store!! A huge selection of really delicious mock meats, most of which are preseasoned so all you need to do is heat per instructions then eat! If you are vegan, be sure to check the ingredients as there are vegetarian items here as well. We love the Taiwanese braised pork (lu rou fan), which was recommended to us by the nice man in the shop, and the tofu skin. I've sampled the tofu fish (great for hot pot) and the dried goods that can be sprinkled on rice (crispy dry soy burdock and crispy dry soy), and those were yummy as well. The prices are so reasonable. This store supplies some of the Asian vegan restaurants, so why not save yourself some money and buy straight from the supplier and cook at home.

Yelp
The whole freezer of vegan fare and it's great to have so many options. And they are open during the pandemic! However the phone number listed on this page is WRONG, and if you call it, it leads to a poor guy who gets called a million times by people trying to reach VegeFarm. When I went I took a photo of the correct number which I'm posting so if you are trying to reach this place please use the photo from the photo. Thanks

Yelp
They are open during the pandemic. Store is really clean and neat. New hours is from 1pm to 6pm.

Yelp
Great place to find plant based shrimp, chicken, and cat fish...and more! Their current business hours: Monday to Sunday from 1pm-6pm.

Yelp
Big selection of unique vegan products! We tried Korean sesame "chicken," which was sooo flavorful and easy to prepare. Excellent customer service! The guy who worked there was very friendly and attentive. He took the time to answer our questions and teach us about the products. 110% recommended! We will return soon!

Yelp
I love this place! It's so cool to be able to replicate meat free dishes that I normally have to order from restaurants. My favorite item is the mock meat chicken drumsticks. I pop them in the air fryer then dunk them in whatever sauce I feel like.
google avatar

Stefia L.

Yelp
What is striking is the staggering amount of plastic packaging! Ever. Single. Thing. In. The. Store. Is. In. Plastic. Eating vegetarian is only good for the planet if it has LESS impact on it. (and is local and organic, which NONE of these processed products are). And the food is rubbery.
google avatar

Yelp
Yay I used to go all the way to the distribution site in San Jose to get the vegetable paste. So excited by all the selection here. Very tidy and organized store, and the owner is helpful in making recommendations

Yelp
Walked by VegeFarm today and just had to go in. It's a small, clean and organized spot with super welcoming vibes coming from the owners. We had a few samples from the variety of meatless options they possess. And wow, what a selection! The Meatballs were one of my favorites! So flavorful! The drumsticks were also really good. Definitely coming back. So happy something like this exists in our neighborhood!

Yelp
Delicious mushroom and curry ball samples, I ended up buying $62 worth of goods I have never seen at other stores. Clean store and friendly service. Easy parking.

Daisy M.

Yelp
Lucky us! So great to have this in our neighborhood, now that I'm cutting way down on meat. When one door closes (the wonderful Shangrila Restaurant that was next door to VegeFarm), VegeFarm opens! The couple who run it are really nice. They had yummy samples. The only thing I don't like is I would need to add my own sauce, but luckily, the product is good enough as is! I just microwaved the "fish" for 40 seconds and done. Of course, it'd be better if you add your own chef stuff like ginger, soy sauce, onions, whatever you cooks use, but fer simple and easy and lazy, heat n eat!

D. B.

Yelp
This place is great. They have so many veg products that one wouldn't be able to find anywhere else! And the products are unique...and tasty!

Germaine Y.

Yelp
Friendly staff who are helpful with answering any questions. This 100% vegetarian shop offers a wide variety of frozen veggie-protein based meat alternatives. A great gem for vegetarians who like mock meat. They also sell some healthy powders (eg soy, sesame), and cooking seasonings (eg Tom yam, oyster sauce). The shop just opened 3 weeks ago, and are currently offering samples for many of their products.
