Altercation at Velo Cafe Results in Former Employee Being Banned from the Wharf | Eater DC

"I witnessed a disgruntled employee at Velo Cafe—a combination hardware store, bike shop, and cafe at the Wharf—scream at customers, coworkers, and passersby on March 14 after being terminated; she yelled accusations of racism toward minorities, drug use, and unfair treatment from behind the counter as Eater entered, prompting Wharf security and D.C. police to intervene. Co-owner Jarrett Conway said the staffer, who had joined the operation last year, was fired for cause, called the statements false, and confirmed the woman has been banned from the Southwest waterfront and that a restraining order has been filed. With the "very unfortunate incident" behind him, Conway is now pursuing a seasonal beer garden that would spill onto the sidewalk with four to five tables from spring through fall, rolling open Velo’s garage doors to create a natural flow and serving the beer, wine, and cocktails already available inside, pending final permitting." - Warren Rojas

Google
The food is incredibly fresh and delicious. Exceeded only by the great service from Amelia. And a really cool atmosphere and vibe, too. #lEtsreAlestate with #ScottGellerTheHomeSeller also, the best coffee along the Atlantic County Shore. And definitely in the conversation for one of the best breakfast restaurants anywhere.

Velo Cafe was a standout, small cafe experience. When we arrived around noon, the place was popping with customers, yet the wait was only five minutes and the service was exceptional. They got us seated relatively quickly and offered a water bowl for our dog with ice, being a hot summer day. We had one waitress, but several additional staff members were flowing around the outdoors, all making conversation and helping with the orders. It was an impressive flow! The only reason I am reluctantly giving four instead of five stars was the food. While the sides (potatoes, fresh fruit, sausages) and presentation were great, the entrees themselves were a bit lackluster. The cheesesteak omelet was very bland, being heavy on the provolone cheese and very low on the meat and peppers. My partner's order was also reportedly good, but not anything great. It's possible that we came on a bad day, with the waitress mentioning that one of the chefs had to go home early, but until we revisit, which I'd like to, we'll have to wait and see. Still, definitely a worthwhile stop on any passing journey or summer beach vacation!

I can honestly say best meal I’ve had since I’ve been at the shore 6 weeks now a definite must try everything was great . I got the Mediterranean omelette and my husband got the breakfast burrito and we got the Barrada toast to share and it was all delicious. I would say if you’re down the shore stop here.

Google
Great coffee spot with a strong latte selection and a clean, inviting atmosphere. The food is flavorful and thoughtfully prepared. Service can come off a bit distant at times, possibly due to cultural style rather than rudeness. Overall, a quality experience.

Google
Don’t sleep on Velo Cafe, we have had incredible breakfast lunch and dinner here. We usually go for an early lunch / late breakfast though. Just got dinner there tonight and it was absolutely amazing. Got the caprese salad with the ahi tuna and the Velo chicken. Sooo good!!!

Nicol D.

Google
Service was great. Got the truffled Burrata and Velo cafe salad. Taste was good but size was skimpy for the $17 and $18 price tag. Wouldn’t recommend as anything but a light snack. Restaurant has a laid back atmosphere. Be prepared to spend for smaller portions but overall good quality food.

Google
Dinner is where it's at here. We had a great experience at dinner this summer (though the gnats came out at dusk so we had to move inside) The dinner was excellent. Interesting dishes. The breakfast was just ok. The guacamole, which is on their breakfast sandwiches had no flavor. It looked great, but didn't pass the flavor test. I will stick with dinners.

Google
As fate would have it, we stumbled upon this spot and were surprised to find a bustling crowd with a 40-minute wait. Despite the delay, I must say it was well worth it, as I had one of the best brunch experiences in a long time. As I savored every bite, I couldn't help but wish that this gem of a spot was located closer to my home. Alas, it wasn't, but I made a mental note to make a return trip to Atlantic City and indulge in their delicious brunch once again. The service was prompt and friendly. All in all, I highly recommend this spot to anyone visiting Atlantic City or looking for an exceptional brunch experience. It may require a bit of a wait, but trust me, it's well worth it.

Yelp
This is an absolutely amazing breakfast and brunch spot close to Atlantic City and Brigantine. I had the iced matcha and pistachio latte with oat milk and it was so tasty! The orale benedict was so unique and incredible with ground chorizo, perfectly poached eggs, Cajun hollandaise, and a sweet potato base. The servers were kind, attentive, and accommodating with our four month old baby. I look forward to coming back for lunch or dinner soon!

Yelp
Had a nice brunch at Velo. The place is beautiful and clean, inside and out. The menu has a lot of interesting choices. I settled on the goat cheese omelet, with a side of fruit. The omelet was fairly good, but I was disappointed with the fruit. It was an up charge and the portion was tiny. My husband got the stuffed French toast with a side of turkey sausage. The French toast was very tasty but the turkey sausage was overcooked and not good. I would love to come back and try Velo for lunch.

Yelp
We love Velo Cafe! We have bern here 5 times in 2 weeks and it never disappoints. The omelettes and eggs Benedict are awesome. Chicken panini's were fresh and delicious. Avocado toast and chicken w: waffles are a favorite. Mabel and Trinity offer outstanding service. We always leave there happy and highly recommended!!

Yelp
Very good brunch. Good Server. Eggs and French toast were spot on. Bacon and pankakes also very good. Good value here.

Yelp
Delicious breakfast at the Jersey Shore. The cheesesteak eggs Benedict, house omelette, and avocado toast were all amazing. Service was excellent too!

Yelp
Went for brunch on the weekend with family in town. Food and staff were great. They have all the classics. Would return.

Randy R.

Yelp
Charming, excellent food, not enough waitstaff yet they tried very hard to please...very convenient

Gabriella S.

Yelp
So good I went two days in a row. Had eggs bene and a hot caramel latte and would recommend!

Yelp
hi hi! this place was very aesthetic, clean, and had fast service. the food was great! i had the pancake tacos and the eggs were perfect! the pancakes hit the spot. come check this spot out if your in atlantic city nj!

Yelp
Food is always delicious. Never hard to get a table and takeout is always quick. Definitely a nicer breakfast experience than a typical breakfast spot/diner.
google avatar

Yelp
My visit was so nice , the workers were friendly , and the food was so delicious. I would definitely come again , the outside seats were very peaceful.

Yelp
We had a wonderful brunch. The food, staff and service were great. Coffee was fresh. Cute little place. We had avocado toast, chicken and waffles and a breakfast combo.
google avatar

Jeffrey Z.

Yelp
Excellent quality food, great service. Attractive environment. Pricey. The only thing I could criticize the fact that there is only a single bathroom - not a good experience when you need to go.

Yelp
We have been dining out in Ventnor & Margate for many years. Last night I "discovered' Velo Cafe, and we gave it a try. It was wonderful! The food is fresh and locally sourced, the menu is diverse, the dishes even look like works of art! And, despite their high standards, a friendly low-key vibe further enhances the experience. And it is a byob! Our New fav!

Yelp
While in Atlanta City, we decided to check out the Velo Cafe. We made last-minute reservations, so we were glad that they could fit us in. The staff we very nice and friendly as we entered the restaurant. We were seated immediately. They gave us fresh bread to start, which was delicious. My daughter decided on the Fresh Pasta Special. I don't know what was in it, but she said it was delicious. (See photo). I got the Velo Chicken. It was roasted chicken breast with onions, mushrooms, tomatoes & goat cheese. Out of 10, I give it an 8. It was very good just need more vegetables and less meat (if you can believe that). Just a big plate of meat.. We also got a seafood salad to share. It was delicious. It had Shrimp, Octopus, Arugula, Cherry tomatoes, fennel & Celery tossed in a lemon olive oil. Everything was delicious but my only complaint is I don't like gratuities added to my bill. Other than that I enjoyed my time there. I would recommend this restaurant if you're in the area.

Tami S.

Yelp
Food was delicious! Service excellent! The Velo salad was not great! Not much flavor! All the other dishes were very good!

Yelp
A great brunch for down the shore. Orale Benedict was hearty, light, delicious, and refreshing all at the same time. I usually don't expect much from French Toast, but the Mascarpone French Toast was just superb, a must get. The place can get packed, and they squeeze you in pretty tight; but it is worth it. A damn fine brunch. Food (B+)  Pricing (D+)  Atmosphere (B)  Service (B)

Yelp
Had a nice Eggs Benedict today and it had been a while so I really enjoyed it. What I didn't enjoy was the $17! I mean come on, two eggs, an English muffin a thin slice of ham and some hollandaise sauce is what $3.00? Ok potatoes so add $.75? I want everyone to make money but how are the folks supposed to support the local establishments when the prices are so high? That's an $8.00 item going off at $17.00? Can't do it.

Yelp
Our friends made a reservation for six at Velo Restaurant in Ventnor, NJ. During the busy summer season this lovely spot is usually booked! We tried to get a reservation the weekend after Labor day; we were glad to get in! This place is BYOB and each couple brought adult beverages ranging from wine to a mixer for cosmos! As soon as we were seated, our server came right over to welcome us & offer us openers for our drinks. After hearing the specials we were ready to order! Our meals did not disappoint! Each one was served warm & tasted delicious! I shared a Velo Salad,- and ordered the Farro Salmon. Yummmm! Others had chicken and a different kind of ginger salmon and everyone agreed they really loved their meal! I highly recommend this restaurant, and hope to enjoy many more meals there! Their desserts are awesome too.

Yelp
My husband and I visited Velo on a Saturday night around 6:30pm with no reservation during the winter. I recommend a reservation in the summer months. We were seated right away. BYOB. Started with the octopus and fried mozzarella appetizers. Both were fantastic. My husband went with the pasta special and I chose the Bronzino with the tale on. It was delicious. We have ordered Brussel and potatoes to share. For dessert we spit the warm apple crumb with ice cream and coffee. Lovely. Lots of leftovers to take home. The service was wonderful. The executive chef even came out to help the two servers clear tables. That type of supportive working environment goes a long way with me. I look forward to dining at Velo again. This is a gem in Ventnor.

Yelp
While visiting Atlantic City, my husband and I wanted to find a nice little breakfast spot that was a little further from the hotels and we eventually came across this cute spot. The food was excellent, the prices were reasonable and the service was great. The next time we're in the area we will absolutely stop by!
google avatar

Yia-Ming L.

Yelp
I got the mussel in red sauce and the shrimp ceviche. Both the appetizers were good but our main course and side were disappointing. The chicken was nice and tender but the pasta did not have that much flavor. It was bland and drowned in unflavored butter. Brussel sprouts were burnt. The short rib was tough while the mash potatoes tasted like instant mash potatoes. There were flies flying around us too inside the restaurant which made our food less enjoyable. Overall, everything was disappointing for dinner.
google avatar

Cassie A.

Yelp
Velo cafe was a perfect breakfast/brunch spot! We had a big group and everyone really enjoyed their meals. Service was great as well. It's BYO so bring your own champagne and make some mimosas if you'd like!
google avatar

Yelp
Such a tasty experience for a table of 7 for brunch. We were seated almost immediately, though the place isn't quite that big, so I was grateful to get a table! Of a lot of places around AC for breakfast, the decor here was a little fresher and more up to date, with a nice shore theme and a menu that isn't afraid to have some layered, fun options. Lemon ricotta crepes, sweet potato benedict, along with staples like wraps, chicken and waffles, and french toast make me consider this spot every time i'm in the area. The staff even made me a special oat milk glass of chocolate milk, which was not on menu but was tasty. Liked the home fries but yes, they give you a pretty small portion of them. But I was full after my breakfast, didn't need anymore
google avatar

Gretchen B.

Yelp
Dinner atmosphere Average food Most servers are pleasant, not all.... absolute arrogance if a couple. What's nosier - inside conversations bouncing off tile floors or the outdoor lounge signer? Many options in Ventnor no need to go back.
google avatar

Victoria B.

Yelp
Crowded and tough to get into. Tight squeeze between tables. If you are not afraid of a crowd then try out the Italian delights that this authentic classic kitchen stirs up! The portions are generous and the staff is as friendly as they can be while buzzing around from table to table. The bone in Veal Chop Parmesan is pounded thin and is so tender and delicious- it takes up the entire plate - so go hungry! 1 star taken for the crowded downstairs / I don't love feeling smushed - it is loud and very tight. The outside seating doesn't offer a great vibe. The food is amazing so it's worth it :)

Yelp
Great food, service & ambiance. I had the Velo Café Omelet (Wild mushrooms, asparagus, caramelized onions, & goat cheese) and had them add crumbled sausage. Delicious! The water and coffee are free flowing. I had being left thirsty, so those two are big deals tomorrow. I highly recommend sitting outside on a sunny day. They have enough umbrellas and awnings to provide shade.
google avatar

Yelp
Quiet little spot, perfect for an intimate good meal! Very comfortable seating and the place was spotless. Cute menu offering, from breakfast to dinner. We enjoyed a tasty breakfast of Crab Benedict & a Mexican Omelette. Our waitress Julia was friendly and efficient while delivering good service.

matthew v.

Yelp
We had brunch there. It was very good, staff was friendly, service was fast, food creative and good.

Yelp
This is my second time at Velo Cafe, and wow this place does not disappoint! The menu is excellent and has something for everyone. Chicken & waffles are not usually my first choice of breakfast food because in the past, the fried chicken was questionable but I decided to try it at Velo, and now I'm HOOKED. The chicken has no bone and has a uniquely spiced batter to it. It's crispy on the outside and extremely tender on the inside. I have not tasted anything better than this. To add, prices for everything are very fairly priced for the quality of food you are getting. Staff is very friendly and efficient. Inside ambience is cozy. Definitely would recommend!! Can't wait to be back soon to try the brunch boards! Check out my post on @gutinmybelly

Yelp
This is one of my fav sit-down brunch places in the area, either as a date or a family affair. Sweet and savoury Crepes, sandwiches, omelettes, crab Benedict, chicken and waffles, and even a family brunch board with lots of pancakes, eggs, and bacon. This is a nicer sit-down for brunch for a reasonable $$ for the atmosphere and service. Just note - it's always always busy on the weekends

Yelp
Velo is one of my FAVORITE restaurants. Not only is their dinner menu delectable but their breakfast is as equally delicious. Pictured is a barrata dish, bronzino, and short rib. The crispy prosciutto paired with the bronzino is what drew me into the entree that I chose and as per usual, I chose right! The person I was dining with was kind enough to let me try their short rib dish and the short rib was amazing! The owners of Velo are always so kind. I find that every time I visit Velo, there's another dish on the menu that intrigues me and every meal I've had their has been flavor and beautiful in presentation. I've yet to visit an additional location that they've recently acquired but I'll be sure to stop in.

Yelp
Such a cute breakfast spot! I ordered the salmon benedict. It was tasty, but one of the eggs was a little overdone for the dish. I love eggs, so I will eat all eggs, but I do prefer a poached egg for the dish. The cappuccino was really good. I would definitely eat here again when I am in the area.

Yelp
Harassed by owner's mom, Unprofessional owner called my friend a racist I am a big supporter of small business and I have never experienced this type of unprofessional behavior at any restaurant. I arrived at 10:45am and I had spoke to the host that my friends will be here at 11:30am. The host seated me. While I was sitting the owner's mom came to my table to say "busy" with an upset face expression but everything else was not in English. I have already told her my friends will be here at 11:30am since I notice their is lack of communication between employees for her to do that. Then she started to harass me 3 more times and she even spoke in her language about me to the customers next to me. I had enough of being harassed and spoke to the owner and he blamed me for sitting and even told me his mom did not harass me. He called my friend an racist because my friend told the owner that the "manager" his mom should have asked someone who spoke English to communicate that she has a problem with me sitting here. This owner should not be running a cafe. He does not know how to handle customer services. The owner's mom made me feel like this place was a place for her people only. Overall the food was ok and it was nothing amazing. The host and waitress was nice and did check to ask if we had everything we needed. I will not be coming back.

Yelp
Cute and quaint bistro vibes with fresh food and clean presentation. The coffees and iced frappes were a good start to our brunch experience. They serve oat and almond milk as dairy alternative to traditional creamer. My wife and I chose to share a Mediterranean omelette, which features kalamata olives, feta and spinach, with tomato and red onion. It was light and delicious. We also opted for the Balkan toast, which was the true star of the menu - it is reminiscent of avocado toast, with with a sorta of hummus spread made of roasted eggplant and red peppers instead of the typical avocado or guacamole. A must try. Service seems a little flustered, but we went on a busy Sunday morning so it's understandable.
google avatar

Tiffany W.

Yelp
Read the review and thought the food would be so good, but it's ok. Portion is small. Feel like they need more garnish for the plating. Please don't order the sweet potato toast. It's nothing.... Waste money. Benedict was ok. Wish it has more home fries and the home fries has more fire. It felt like baked.. Frappe was ok. It's not cold enough. Overpriced overall....
google avatar

Yelp
Fun cafe with great service with beautiful and delicious dishes! Our group enjoyed the Eggs Benedict, waffle, and Ricotta Crepe. Our waiter was attentive and friendly.

Yelp
Went for the second time for breakfast and once again, food was great. The Orale Benedict is AWESOME (see photo) and the sweet potatoe toast (both the sweet and the savory) are delicious.

Yelp
Just happened in be in Atlantic City and was looking for a breakfast spot. The menu of Velo Cafe looked good and it wasn't too far to drive so we decided to check it out. The Cafe itself is really nice inside and much more attractive than I initially thought it would be. Well decorated and the bike theme was really nice. I ordered the smoked salmon Eggs Benedict. If anyone has read my other breakfast reviews they'd know that it's my favorite breakfast item if the place has it. This is one of the best I had. The capers were a nice touch. The home fries were delicious. Well cooked and the green/red peppers added a nice sweetness to the dish. My wife had the waffle, which she loved. Covered with bananas, blueberries, and strawberries. She said the waffle was cooked perfectly, soft on the inside with a crispy crust. Is that the right word, crust? lol. The wait staff was super friendly and they were very attentive without being on top of you all the time. Excellent service.

Brittnee H.

Yelp
Had my eyes on this place. Heard the hype and lived up to it. From the staff to the decor we enjoyed our Leo Birthday breakfast. Very very fresh & our check was pennies compared to what some of these other AC area bfast spots charge for - basic breakfast. Book mark this place yelpers and make it a bfast stop for sure.

Yelp
I have been a follower of Velo Cafe in Instagram for quite sometime and finding myself in the area we had to try! We headed out for Sunday brunch... The place is quite popular and we waited a bit for a table due to Covid lower occupancy restrictions. The wait was well worth it! They have an amazing breakfast selection! My traditional husband had the 2 eggs breakfast while I had the Velo omelet! Fresh coffee and juice... Amazing food, cozy atmosphere and friendly service made us feel at home!
google avatar

Frank S.

Yelp
Had brunch at the establishment. The staff was friendly and very attentive even with how busy they were. Our orders came out quickly and the food was excellent. We definitely enjoyed the crab cake Benedict and the lemon ricotta stuffed crepes
google avatar

Yelp
It's amazing when a place has consistency, but it's even more amazing when it's nothing short of delicious every time. COVID has completely changed the dining out experience and it will forever be changed. However along with it, so many restaurants like Velo have not only adjusted during such difficult transitions but have over come them with grace. The service seems to be one of the most impactful as walking in you feel an immediate sense of family and that you're truly in for a family friendly experience. The food is quick, is well prepared and SO GOOD. No better way to put it. They are very open and kind to special requests when it comes to food allergies, etc. What a great spot that never ceases to amaze. Thank you for your hospitality Velo, can't wait to come back. Very soon!

Yelp
Quality and fresh food. Will definitely come back for more. Would be a plus if could make a reservation, but overall delicious place. Got the crab bene, soo soo good!
google avatar

Martin M.

Yelp
the benedict is alright. nothing too memorable. the home fries are what shine. so juicy yet crisp. the only thing is the restaurant is quite small. you will be packed in like sardines and feel quite cramped while trying to enjoy your meal
google avatar

Linda C.

Yelp
Went here after a good walking trip for brunch, the lemon ricotta crepe was delicious!! I would definitely recommend it, it's light, not too sweet and just the right amount/size.

Jade D.

Yelp
Best meal I have had at the Shore in ages. Best combination of food, service and especially ambiance - small restaurant so not crowded and not overly noisy. Food was tremendous.

Yelp
Came here for brunch for a group of six after a weekend in Atlantic City. Service was great and the food was even better. Would def go back.

Yelp
We were looking for a good brunch spot outside of Atlantic City and stumbled upon this place. We came on a Saturday morning and there was still plenty of tables available. The reason it lacks a star is because of how long it took for us to be handed menus. We were seated by an older woman; I guess it wasn't communicated that we were seated and unattended? It took about 10 minutes before we were actually given menus. I love their concept of brunch boards! They have a few different types, but we went with the Smoked Salmon Brunch Platter. It consisted of lic, everything bagels (they were out for the day so they subbed it with English muffins), scrambled eggs and some cucumbers and tomatoes. Such a nice sharing plate! We also got sides of sausage which were also really good. The food really compensated for the service, definitely worth the visit if you're in Atlantic City and want to steer away from the typical hotel breakfast. It's just a 10 minute drive from the boardwalk.
