"This chain started in Texas, and has a menu filled with fusion tacos that seem invented by a hungry drunk person with nothing left to lose. They’re not very good, and we can’t think of anything worse than their chicken and waffles taco, made with a flaccid taco-shaped waffle, gloopy gravy, and leathery fried chicken. Despite the West Loop location serving alcohol, the counter-service space is way too much of a fast-food restaurant to make you want to hang out here after going out in the neighborhood." - Adrian Kane

Title: Serious Concerns over Food Quality and Safety Rating: ★☆☆☆☆ My experience at Velvet Taco was unfortunately far from delightful due to severe quality and safety issues that I encountered during my recent visit. I ordered a cauliflower taco, a staple of Velvet Taco's menu, which, to my dismay, had a strange, string-like acidic taste that was quite unpalatable. This was the first red flag that raised concerns about the freshness and quality of the ingredients used. However, what was even more alarming was the condition of the chips and guacamole that I received. The chips were undeniably stale, lacking the expected crunch and freshness. As for the guacamole, it was clear that it had been soiled. The texture and smell were off, leaving an unpleasant aftertaste. These issues are significant as they pose a serious threat to the health and safety of customers. Food quality and safety are fundamental to any food establishment, and to have both these aspects neglected is unsettling. When I attempted to voice my concerns and request a refund, I found the customer service to be non-responsive. Despite multiple attempts to reach out, there was no answer. This lack of communication only adds to my disappointment and frustration. It is absolutely critical for Velvet Taco to ensure the freshness and safety of their food while maintaining an open line of communication with their customers. I genuinely hope my review serves as a wake-up call and prompts immediate action to rectify these issues. In its current state, I find it hard to recommend Velvet Taco to anyone, and I sincerely hope that my experience was an isolated incident and not indicative of their usual service standards.

The atmosphere is so laid back and comfortable! The food is amazing, not fast food at all. I had the smash burger taco, and it melts in your mouth! And the guac is the best! The manager there had a great personality and kept the environment fun and inviting. Luis had the best outfit, and was taking care of everything! Love it here and will definitely be back

Louis at Velvet Taco provided exceptional service during my recent visit. He was incredibly knowledgeable about the menu, offering great recommendations that perfectly suited my taste. Louis was also very friendly and ensured that our order was prepared promptly and accurately. His attention to detail and positive attitude made our dining experience truly enjoyable. I highly recommend visiting Velvet Taco and asking for Louis's assistance for a fantastic meal!

Google
I can say that this is my best place to have vegetarian options taco with the best taste ever. I highly recommend all vegetarian foodie to try those all vegetarian options but I suggest to have a cauliflower and paneer taco to have must try. I can even suggest their inhouse sangria. Waiting to open velvet Taco in new Jersey or new York.

Google
Though the place *feels* like fast food — go through the line and order at the window — the food is quintessentially not. I had a grilled salmon taco and also a crispy tofu taco. I was surprised at how good the latter was. I also had elote guac which was AWESOME. Comes with plenty of blue corn tortilla chips.

J Richardson

Google
Absolutely delicious! Had the Spicy tikka chicken, Quesa birria duo, and Slow-roasted angus brisket tacos with Crisp tots & local egg and red velvet cake! It was a ton of delicious food, tacos super unique and tasty and Louis provided amazing recommendations and service!

Google
Velvet Taco is very consistent. The number 10 now tastes like the first time I had a number 10 at the original Dallas location 6 years ago. Friendly staff and fresh ingredients make this a winner ever time.

Google
Let me tell y’all the service was amazing and atmosphere is a vibe. The food was delicious and everything was made with fresh ingredients. A must for friend outings / date night!

Tonya W.

Yelp
Food is delicious, pricey and so good. Service is very friendly, and so nice! Restaurant is definitely a VIBE and cool for late night runs with friends,

Aditi R.

Yelp
Had a great time at Velvet taco for a late night bite! They are open super late which is awesome for spontaneous plans (like mine were :)). I ended up getting the Mexi-Cali shrimp taco on a lettuce wrap and it did not disappoint! I would also highly recommend the queso and red velvet cake as additions to your meal. The service was prompt and had a fast-casual set up, as you grab your food from the counter. I would definitely go back!

Raynaldo O.

Yelp
The standard velvet taco location but with Slightly small interior and parking garage. They do have a walk up for pickup orders next to the parking lot. It's convenient but annoying that it isn't drive thru. They usually are pretty fast from my past pick up orders.

Tarrah T.

Yelp
This was my second time to this particular Velvet Taco on a work trip to Dallas, and I don't tend to do second visits much! My grilled salmon taco was incredible, and my friends enjoyed their orders as well. The wait was quick, and the flavor options were so fun and creative. My only wish is that there had been another type of GF taco. Like I said, loved what I got, but wished I could have tried one more.

Marc M.

Yelp
Loved my Tacos and the atmosphere. It covered patio was great since it was sprinkling.

Jonathon C.

Yelp
Awesome tacos. Got the slow roasted brisket, Cuban pig, the tikka chicken taco, and the chimichurri steak. Chimichuri steak tasted a bit off - so we asked if we could switch it out with another. And they said no problem! Really awesome service. And a great vibe overall. Would recommend!

Moriah D.

Yelp
Velvet Taco has been a staple during my time in Dallas for over 10 years! It was one of the first places I tried when I got here. It has remained consistent and delicious! My favorite tacos are the buffalo chicken and picnic chicken! Gotta have the elote, and a margarita (half frozen/half on the rocks) to complete your meal. The red velvet cake with that caramel drizzle is everything! If you want an amazing twist to traditional tacos, you definitely want to try these curated unique tacos! @MissMo2323

Christine W.

Yelp
Really cool design and even cooler tacos! They have a broad variety of tacos to order, including vegetarian options. The tacos came out fast and fresh, and filled with flavor. The queso was surprisingly good but a small size. The shrimp taco was by far the winner of the tacos we tried that day, but all were worthy of coming back for.

Kiersten L.

Yelp
The tacos were amazing!! I really enjoyed the variety of flavors as well as the quality of food. Jackson's service went above and beyond .

Briana D.

Yelp
I was super excited to try this place since it was recommended to me by a friend. I wasn't impressed. I have had better tacos for half the price. I was still hungry after I ate three of these tiny tacos!

LeShea B.

Yelp
You order at the front and pay. They call your name and you go get your food. We sat outdoors. I ordered the regular queso (reorderable) Elote (this time it was good. Last time not so much) Hamburger taco (always a banger) And velvet cake (wasn't as worth the hype as I've seen, but much better once I paired whatever drizzle that was, caramel?) Sat outside. Wind was blowing like crazy that day. I don't think it's meant for communal seating but this couple came and plopped down right on the end of our table, ate and left their trash for others to clean. I didn't too much like that. I guess That's just lack of manners though, and doesn't reflect the company. I like this location and plan on returning when I need my velvet taco fix. A little mid-pricey but it's all good !!

Laura S.

Yelp
The best guacamole I had in my life! Highly recommend! The place is open late and has nice atmosphere.

Larry G.

Yelp
I recommend Velvet Taco to all my friends and relatives, On average, the staff is always awesome and friendly, Tonight I was highly surprised because I have been dreaming of the shrimp, scampi taco that I had received a notice about and wondering how awesome it could be, however, tonight I received a fried shrimp and rice taco, which was fine, but it was not shrimp scampi, when I brought this to the attention of the staff they informed me that that's how they make the shrimp scampi taco, to which my reply was why don't you just call it fried shrimp and rice taco... Still curious what a shrimp scampi taco would be like ? The tacos are always amazing and creative

Brandi B.

Yelp
This place has been a go to of mine for years! I always get the elote, Kobe bacon burger and buffalo chicken. They are all sooooo good and full of flavor. It was my first time trying their guacamole and I wasn't disappointed at all. If you have room for dessert I ALWAYS suggest the red velvet cake, especially if it's fresh. This location is probably my favorite because it's the biggest and being that it gets packed around 1am there's still a lot of room for people to sit and enjoy their food while sobering up after bar hopping

Chijioke N.

Yelp
Very good tacos, The girl that served me was very nice and friendly and she knew the menu very well They're open late so that's a big plus, also it's a clean place with dim lit lights so the ambience is calm and soothing. The only reason I would say the lost a star is because it is very overpriced in my opinion.. $6 for a taco os actually madness.. I just don't think that's worth it.

Tyrone R.

Yelp
Literally the best taco I've ever eaten. No lies told. My only regret is that I'm leaving tomorrow morning and there are no locations in Woodbridge VA. Awesome vibes. Amazing food!!! And Cliff is so stellar!! I will definitely be back every single time I'm in town! Thank you for an amazing experience. My taste buds thank you!

Melanie T.

Yelp
Everytime I visit Texas, I must make a stop at Velvet Taco. While they're not authentic tacos, the taco fusion somehow just works. The Chicken & Waffle is my favorite. I love the combination of the waffle taco, the chicken tender, and the maple syrup. It sound strange but it's a delicious amalgamation of a taco. The chicken tender is crispy even with takeout. It's a must in the menu for me. Another favorite of mines on the menu are any of the beef options. The Slow roasted angus brisket taco is delicious. The brisket is cooked just right where you are not chewing for five minutes on one piece of steak. Hands down one of my favorite chain restaurants.

Ray G.

Yelp
These aren't your typical tacos. They don't have your typical taco flavors and ingredients. I liked the concept of incorporating other cultures. Listed from my favorite to least favorite... I tried the Buffalo Chicken, Chicken and Waffle , and the Flank Steak Taco. The menu was easy to ready and understand and the order process was fast and friendly. The food was prepared fresh and very quickly. There is sitting inside and out. The beverage area and sitting areas are maintained cleaned. My only complaint was the indoor kitchen ventilation- it wasn't great. It was very smokey inside which made my eyes watery and uncomfortable. My clothes had a strong stench of grease/food as well.

Mike And Jackie W.

Yelp
Great food... unexpected and nice inside. Service was great too!!!! Go in hungry. Lots of choices and if you aren't careful you will order too much. Reasonable prices.

Ashley W.

Yelp
Love love love Velvet Taco. I'll be a fan for life. I ordered my food to go on a Sunday to be picked up between 1:30-1:45pm. I arrived at 1:30 and they had just finished bagging my ordered. Perfect timing. Per usual, the food was GREAT. This is definitely a must when visiting a city that has a Velvet Taco.

Nancy B.

Yelp
Somewhere between Henderson Ave and McKinney Ave, Velvet Taco lost it. I went up to the order counter five times hoping I'd get it right. Wrong. #1 flank steak; large chunks of grissle and a dearth of meat. I'd rather eat a cannibal sandwich. #2 Mediterranean Mushroom; slimy shrooms covered in an over-seasoned sauce with French fries drowned in a pool of fat #3 kids quesadilla; cold, white flour tortilla with tepid cheese on top #4 Fish and Chips; the best of a bad lot. Over-battered and soggy cod, not-too-bad Napa slaw, and French fries that resembled long, thinly-sliced fingernails bathing in a pool of grease #5 Beers served the same temp as the food. Employees were terrific. Nice patio and groovy interiors.

Milagros D.

Yelp
Legitimately the best tacos around Dallas, Doesn't matter what I get I end up loving it. They make the best velvet cake. I love it!

Marquette S.

Yelp
The food was hot and very good. Plus after midnight still open to eat. Nice selection of food to pick from cook fresh to order

Molly W.

Yelp
I'm actually super bummed. It tastes good but it's REALLY skimpy for a taco that's close to $6. We spent almost $50 at this place for 8 tacos. I used to come here a lot and have never gotten tacos like the ones I got today. It used to overflow- there's only a tiny bit of meat here and my other ones are similar. I'm just so tired of restaurants charging a lot and we get a little.

Klarissa F.

Yelp
2nd time here and it didnt disappoint after a long fight! All the tacos were so unique and packed with flavor. The corn was amazing and a group favorite! The nachos couldve used a bit more meat. The inside was very nice and the vibe was fun. We got our food fairly quickly as well!

J C.

Yelp
Great menu choices with much variety! Fast and delicious! When visiting I always make it at least once! They never disappoint!

Brad H.

Yelp
Stopped in during a recent trip to Dallas and loved this place. The worker on the mic announcing everyone's order made things fun, as did the overall atmosphere of the place. I ordered three tacos. The Buffalo tofu, the fried paneer, and, the beer battered cauliflower. All of them were delicious in their own way. The shells were so flavorful and grilled perfectly. I loved the breading and sauce on the Buffalo taco. The fried paneer was probably my favorite though. I never had half the things that came on the taco, but it all went together great!

Valerie V.

Yelp
How this place has such high reviews I have no idea. These are what I call "sandwiches disguised as tacos". We came here late night, obviously after a certain hour most food actually tastes decent, unfortunately of the 7-8 different "tacos" we tried, only 1 was actually decent, the flank steak was the best. Everything else tasted just not good. I'd skip and try a different option. These tacos are also ridiculously expensive.

Divine K.

Yelp
Velvet tacos is famous Texan taco joint that has a unique Taco selection that you really can't find anywhere else. If you're looking for like authentic Mexican tacos this isn't a spot their selection is very unique. Every now and then the menu is tweaked a little bit but honestly anything you get is pretty solid. The first time I went it was an Uber passenger that I went with and we ordered every single Taco on the menu and had some drinks on the side and I kid you not not one taco sucked. Also if you get a chance definitely try their Thai nacho sauce it is really good. Lol I feel like they put crack in it because it's so addicting. If you go into dying usually take about 10 to 15 minutes depending on the size of your order to get your food ready which isn't that bad and if you're there from 10:00 p.m. to about 1:00 a.m. it's fairly busy but it's a nice late night vibe for sure

Lisa H.

Yelp
Decided to order tacos at 4am to our hotel and let me tell you that was the best decision ever. I got a variety of their tacos and each one was super delicious. There was a layer of cheese and sauce in the queso which I was not expecting but it made it a great dip for the tacos too.

Shrinath D.

Yelp
Velvet Taco is one of my all time favorite taco spots in Texas! They have a wide variety of flavors and everything can be easily modified. It's also probably the most "different" taco spot, making it a must visit. I've tried all four vegetarian adoptions: Nashville Hot Tofu, Fried Paneer, Falafel, and Beer Battered Cauliflower. The Nashville Hot Tofu is made up of crispy tofu, napa slaw, ranch crema, and house brined pickles on a flour tortilla. It's one of their best ones and highly recommend it to anyone trying to get a Nashville hot chicken vibe. The fried paneer is crispy paneer, tomato chutney, tikka sauce, raita crema, and Thai basil all on a flour tortilla. This taco also always hits the spot and creates the perfect Indian-Mexican fusion experience. The Falafel is tahini crema, arugula, tomato, pickled fresnos, avocado, pickled red onion and pea tendrils on a lettuce wrap but you can ask for a tortilla! Finally the Beer Battered Cauliflower is my favorite and is made up of queso blanco, Texas Pete sabor sauce, avocado corn pico, and dusted candied pepitas on a flour tortilla. This taco balances all the flavors and is absolutely AMAZING! Pro tip: Make sure you try both sauces they have on the tables. Both truly enhance the experience. The queso was okay, but worth a one time try. But their red velvet cake was TO DIE FOR! Will definitely be getting that again!

Shayal V.

Yelp
The tacos here are pretty solid! They're more dolled up than a typical street taco but the flavors are so delicious, and the taco menu has so many unique combos. Prices are a little steep for tacos but they're surprisingly large and filling so it balances out. The picnic chicken is okay, and I liked the strong curry flavor on the Fish and Chips but the Nashville Hot Tofu was the star. Gotta ding a star for service--they were friendly and helpful but it was a slow Sunday night and half of our order came out 15 mins after the first half (which was already kinda cold when I got it) and we never got our chips and elote (which is a shame since it sounded delicious) once they started getting busier. Small parking lot on the side and plenty of cute outdoor seating.

Dave G.

Yelp
I was in Dallas for a convention and we came to Velvet Tacos three times in four days. Highlights: Blanco Queso, Taco 8.5, the Grill Shrimp Taco and the Red Velvet Cake! I'm two of our visits, the IPA tap was warm and had too much foam. They do have a good selection of canned beer but I really would have liked a draft beer. I ordered the chicken and waffle taco on my last visit and it was good but not great. It is a great concept but I would stick with the more traditional combos. I also ordered the Kobe Bacon Hamburger taco. It sounded amazing and it tasted exactly like a burger. It just wasn't one of my favorites. I would definitely come back and I hope they figure out their draft beer situation.

Paulette G.

Yelp
So sorry Velvet Taco!!!!! What happened to your margaritas. They WERE the world's BEST. Did you change the recipe due to $5.00 Tuesday????? Well, I visited you today Tuesday, February 13, 2024 and that margarita was horrible!!!!!! I almost cried because you had a for sure ki kick ass margarita. Sometimes the way you start IS the way you should end. Now you're introducing shots, and happy hour and the flavor changed to me. Did you switch the liquor???? The Velvet Taco on Greenville in Dallas margarita was NOT the margarita I brag on. I'd rather pay more for that ORIGINAL Kick Ass Margarita!!!!! If not, I wish you guys the best but I will start my search again. A good Margarita is hard to find not to mention a Pina Colada that you didn't even attempt. I will come back but hopefully by then you would have switched back to your ORIGINAL RECIPE PLEASE!!!!! I enjoyed those margaritas!!!!!! The red velvet cake is the best I have had. My favorite taco is the Smashburger. I'm glad you removed the shrimp and grits taco!!!! I questioned my order when it was served; it had nothing to do with shrimp and grits. All of your restaurants has great atmosphere but Knox Henderson was the best; just bad parking. They had good music which makes a difference. Blessings

Justin S.

Yelp
Best cake evahhhh ! Margs are good too Danny is the best server of all time. Good chips

Melani I.

Yelp
Tacos are pretty good taste wise. The only issue for me is they typically a bit too salty. The tater tots and egg dish is good but once again salty and too oily. I guess this doesn't sound like the best review however the fact that they stay open longer than most places is a reason to give them some stars. If they could taper back the salt I would given them a four.

Nathan C.

Yelp
The one complaint I have is their online ordering. I am allergic to cilantro, and on many of their taco descriptions, there is no mention of cilantro. However, I order the taco and when they arrive or are picked up there is cilantro in most, if not all I order. I then cannot eat the food I was wanting. If I pick up, I have to ask and then they have to remake the order which means wasting food. There is also no place in their online ordering for an easy note to say NO Cilantro. It would nice if they could simply either add ALL the actual ingredients, or just put a note section. This would solve everything. Velvet Taco, please fix this.

Yelp
Update: A manager reached out to me offering to refund the last meal 2 days ago. It didn't seem that much of an apology (seemed copy and paste) or acknowledging the amount of times it's been messed up. I replied within 5 minutes, and never heard anything back. Even though the business owner said they wanted to make right/reference this, they didn't seem to care. It is a very hit or miss. I've been here a decent amount of times, giving it a chance- so this isn't a one time review. I've noticed it's one of two ways- the workers (mid day or late) are friendly or rushing you out the door/don't care. I've gone several times where my name/order has been taken by a random person and I'm left waiting till I ask about it (20+ mins), apparently people come up and take orders without providing any proof. Yet with that wait, nothing was given as an apology- still full price, nothing added, and more time waiting (at least 10 mins). Even with this, I've asked for accommodations, it's always a hit or miss still. I asked for certain things off, come home and find stuff on when I didn't want it on it. They work late night, and you get the pad saying tip, and possibly might tip as you feel for them, but still get treated like a number in a system by them and rushed out, and get an order that's taken, messed up, or asked for something that's not there.

Kryshawn B.

Yelp
The food, service, ambiance and consistency of this place it's an easy favorite!!! My niece recently came to visit and after I took her she didn't want to eta anywhere else...also get a margarita ..or two. Thank me later!

Makana G.

Yelp
Their weekly "WTF" tacos are pretty awesome. This weeks was the PB&J burger taco which was unexpectedly delicious. I definitely recommend.

Tabitha S.

Yelp
Y'all, this place is bomb! The innovation, flavor, textures, vibes...they literally nailed it all! 10/10 - Shrimp and grits 9/10 - Chicken and waffles 8/10 - grilled salmon Cost less than $20. Highly recommend. Would visit again!!!

Chris C.

Yelp
Once again the worst possible rating for this ridiculous establishment. The management is non-existent and the hourly workers could care less. They will respond saying they will make a credit, but mgmt is fake

Arjuna M.

Yelp
I'm not from Texas, but whenever I come I make sure to go to Velvet Taco (which I realize is the most touristy thing I can do, but oh well ‍) The chicken tikka taco is what everyone says to get, which is definitely true. But make sure you don't sleep on the tater tots, they'll make you realize that goat cheese really is the ideal topping for tater tots. Also loved the nashville hot tofu, what a great way to use tofu.

Grace P.

Yelp
This is my favorite late night spot in uptown! The tacos and tots always hit the spot! The line moves and food comes out fast. The workers have it down!

Eduardo C.

Yelp
Even though the place was extremely busy the food quality did not drop! They were extremely fast and I got a fresh piece of delicious red velvet cake!

Jevin H.

Yelp
Great taco shop! I've heard a lot about the place since there's a couple in Austin. I'd like to say it lived up to the hype for my first time. FOOD: My family and I ordered several different types of tacos. All of them were pretty good. My personal favorites were the tikka chicken, flank steak, and Cuban pig. The tikka tasted pretty legit, and had good enough spice. The flank steak was pretty juicy, and was overall great. Cuban pig also had a lot of juice. Only complaint was that the mustard was pretty heavy on this taco, with it being slightly overpowering on the nostrils when you eat it. We ordered takeout so there was no service. The tortillas do get a bit hard for delivery so keep that in mind. Would definitely love to eat at the restaurant itself one day!

Laura V.

Yelp
Always one of my first stops when I come back to Texas. Great vegetarian taco options and great queso.

Sanjna B.

Yelp
I came here at 12:30pm on a Monday afternoon. It was busy, but not too busy to find a seat. It was my first time here, and everything on the menu looked delicious! I got the Paneer taco and loved it! The paneer was perfectly crispy and the sauce had a bold, tangy flavor. Overall, I highly recommend if you want text mex food with a twist!

A C.

Yelp
I loves the nacho cheese with the spicy kick and the tater tots but the tacos are not what I expected. The flavors did not meet my expectations. I expected flavor explosions. However I was met with soggy falafels and barely a sprinkle of sauce. Too much chili in the tacos and not well spread out.

Eddie C.

Yelp
When Urban Taco (what formerly occupied this space), I was a little bummed that quality tacos were no longer going to be within walking/stumbling distance of me. When I saw that Velvet Taco had plans to move in instead, I felt a sense of relief. Concept: Being half Mexican, this place is right up my alley. Some of my Mexican friends looks at these types of places and tell me, "they're not real tacos". They have this place all wrong: they're not trying to be. This is not a taqueria. Think of it as a fusion place. I don't consider Chipotle authentic Mexican food, but I still think it's tasty, so I go. Same here. This is not where you're going to get $2 Al Pastor tacos, but the tacos they do serve are still pretty good. Food: My absolute favorite is the brisket one. They melt some cheese on the outside of the tortilla to give it some extra crunch, and it has good salt. Not the healthiest of options, but definitely the best tasting IMO. To me, this is the must try. The tacos are large, so I usually get two at a time. The spicy chicken tikka (definitely has some spice), buffalo chicken, shrimp & grits, ahi poke, and chicken & waffles are all in my rotation for my second taco. As it pertains to the queso (red curry queso or whatever), I wasn't really a fan. Not bad, but not worth the calories. Queso is already perfect in its unaltered state, no need to reinvent the wheel. Price: Admittedly on the high side. Probably gets no complaints from the inebriated crowd at 2:30AM, but sober, during lunch, $10+ for two tacos is a little much. Especially when I can spend $8 for 4 "real" tacos, but again, they are large and have a lot of stuff inside, so there's that. All in all, definitely a good spot after a night out, and not bad for the occasional lunch.
