I came here after R told me about his "good experience at a new place not far called Velvet Taco." He also told me to download the Velvet Taco mobile app to get a free reward that I could redeem when I go there to eat.
Velvet Taco just recently had their grand opening. This new restaurant (part of a chain that is new to this area) is in Dunwoody, on Middle Street, just across the street from the Nordstrom side of Perimeter Mall. The entrance to the parking garage for Velvet Taco is on High Street, and signs instruct drivers where to park for VT. Velvet Taco is open until midnight on Thursdays through Saturdays, but I'd be wary of coming here that late because it's close to both Perimeter Mall and MARTA, but that's just me. Anyhow, finding a parking space, and parking is free, was easy to find, and it was a short walk to Velvet Taco. The first thing that I noticed was that there is a large well lit outdoor patio on the side of the restaurant with many tables shaded with large umbrellas, and a smaller patio with tables in front of the store. There are also many regular height tables and high top tables in the inside dining area.
Upon entering though the doors, large, easy-to-read menus are on the wall next to the order and pick up counters. My first thought at looking at the taco prices were that they were expensive, since the prices of the tacos ranging from the $4.75 Nashville hot tofu taco to the Chimichurri steak taco and the Slow-roasted Angus brisket taco that cost $6.25 each. The menu on the wall lists the tacos separately according to the type of protein, such as chicken, pork, veg, fish and beef. One of the menus that caught my eye was the one that that advertised "the SAY WHAT?! combo, which is any two tacos, an individual side item and a fountain beverage for $14. This is a great deal!
My mind was made up - I was simply going to order a SAY WHAT?! combo with a Chimichurri steak taco, a Slow-roasted Angus brisket taco, an order of chips and queso blanco, chimicurri, Velvet Taco heat sauce and cilantro, and an iced tea drink. From my mobile app, I was able to redeem my reward, selecting chips and the classic guacamole, with avocado, jalapeño, lime juice and red onion. It took about 10 minutes for one of the chips orders to be announced for pick up at the counter. Two minutes later, the rest of our orders were delivered to our table.
I loved the bold tasting chimichurri sauce on both the steak taco and in the queso blanco. I also liked that everything was flavorful and fresh, and that the tacos had a generous amount of filling. I didn't care for the meat in both tacos being on the tough side, when I was expecting tender meat. The service was very good. Not only was everyone nice, they were pretty quick to clean up tables after customers left.
