Five New Dallas Restaurants Diners Need to Check Out Right Now | Eater Dallas

"A creative taco chain that just opened a Plano outpost, known for playful, cross-cultural tacos like chicken-and-waffles and Korean pork topped with kimchi, and featuring a mural by local artists that nods to the Plano Balloon Festival." - Brittanie Shey

Google
Velvet Taco in Plano is a great place to have lunch or dinner. The staff are some of the coolest people around, always friendly and welcoming. I often go here with my family or order through the app and bring it home, so we've experienced both dining in and takeout. The food is usually always good, making it a reliable spot for a tasty meal. However, it's far from excellence due to the fact that they are always really forgetful when it comes to orders. This can be frustrating, especially since it's not cheap and can be pretty taxing on the wallet. Other than that, Velvet Taco is pretty good, and I give it 4 stars.

Google
Unlike Torchys, Velvet Taco DOES have damn good tacos. First of all. The sheer ingenuity of the tacos is impressive. I would have never come up with some of the tacos they offer. Secondly the ingredients are quality and the kitchen staff knows what they are doing. Lastly, the tacos are huge. I got the rotisserie chicken taco that was laden with big chunks of delicious chicken. I also got the slow roasted angus brisket taco that had perfectly seasoned and moist, tender beef with absolutely the freshest most pristine avocado on top. Staff is friendly and the guy calling out the orders is hilarious.

Google
Love these tacos. The spicy chicken tinga is my favorite. Cam was great, and he was very friendly.

Alice O.

Google
We came on a Friday night, it was comfortably full. Enough people to make it feel “happening” but not the point were you can’t find tables. Cam took our order and he was great and very polite. The tacos were ok, some better than others but the tortillas were cold. The corn was good.

Naval M.

Google
Being a vegetarian, i had paneer taco here but it tastes like non-veg, may be its fried in same oil as of chicken or fish, i hate it. If this is the case, they shohld have seperate fryers for vegetarian.. i left the food behind, cava /Chipotle are better!

Google
The flavors are always a hit! They have an Indian/Mexican fusion going on! I got a buffalo bowl, chips and queso and mild tikka tacos. Service was super fast and friendly. The restaurant was clean! The restroom was clean! It was busy but organized.

Kyla R.

Google
The grilled salmon taco is delicious! Cam helped provide a great experience for us!

Google
I’m a returning customer and have been here multiple times as I always enjoy the food. I will say I only go to this location because it’s close to my gym and work. Every time I dine here, I am always served by a short Hispanic man and an older-aged white guy. They both always seem annoyed at me when I ask for simple things or whenever they take my order. At first, I didn’t think much of it, but after multiple times (at least 5+), it seems like a constant behavior. One time, I stood at the front waiting to order for more than 5 mins with no one else in the store, and one of the cooks looked at me and made eye contact with me, but didn’t get anyone to take my order. I stood there waiting patiently until the short Hispanic man appeared from behind the counter where he was checking something, maybe cleaning, and then took my order. He seemed annoyed that I stopped him from being able to finish what he had to take my order. I work in the service industry and have opened multiple restaurants, and I know if some days it’s bad, but to be consistently treating a customer who spends a lot of money at this location very rudely is unacceptable. Today, when I called this location to fix my Uber order, the person speaking picked up the phone and was very dismissive, and after I told him what I needed fixed, just said “okay” and hung up the phone. I don’t know how this store is run, but it seems to me that I’ve been the only one who received bad service, so I don’t know if it’s racially motivated or if I did something wrong. But I’m not coming to this location again.

Yelp
Cam was excellent, helped us decide when we told him it was our first time in. Food was great, atmosphere fun. We will definitely be coming back in

Yelp
I love Cam! He is awesome and also very helpful. This is my second visit with at this location! Service is fast and the staff are very friendly. The playlist is awesome, as well! Thank you, Cam and see you again soon!

Yelp
Nashville Tofu taco veganized was amazing. Stumbled across this fine dining after my original plans fell through. What a tasty delight. I love the outdoor dining is a plus. Service was very accommodating!

Yelp
This shop is always clean, friendly, and fast. Our go to spot in Plano for great tacos, margaritas & of course the red velvet cake. Emily is the best!!
google avatar

Justin B.

Yelp
Stopped by Velvet Taco for a quick bite and tried the queso blanco. The queso had good flavor and the chips were warm and crispy. What made it better was their hot sauce selection. It had lots of heat and flavor to play around with. I also had a little margarita on the side which hit the spot. Service was super fast and everyone was really friendly. They even checked on me a few times which was a nice touch for a fast-casual place.
google avatar

Quynh-Nhi N.

Yelp
Velvet has my favorite chips and queso of all time. The chips are not too oily and the queso is so cheesy and flavorful. Service was quick and I love there is outdoor seating with good music.

Yelp
The food was amazing it looked delicious and it was delicious it came very quick the colors amazing

Yelp
I got to try Velvet Taco a few years ago at a location in Austin so was really excited to get to try it again in Plano! The order ahead and pick up through the drive-thru is so convenient. We hardly waited anytime to get our food. I opted for the Korean Pork bowl and it was so tasty. The jalapeños were such a perfect amount of heat to pair with the dish. I also wanted to try the elote guac on the side, which was incredible. They provide a generous serving of chips on the side. My nieces love their queso blanco. Really yummy spot!
google avatar

Jackie W.

Yelp
First time at the Plano location and boy was I pleased! We did an online order and to our surprise they had a pickup window which is a drive thru as well, GREAT FEATURE! Whoever was at the window was AH-mazing customer service was on point and so pleasant for us picking up a half hour before close! We didn't go inside to peep the ambiance but it wasn't needed with the delightdul gentleman at the window! Now for the food, RUN TO VELVET TACO and get their new bowls! It says limited time but I feel it's a test the water type thing! Get you a bowl and never go to Chipotle's again or any other establishment that has taco type bowls! Exceeded our expectations but a trillion, this bowl is jam packed with flavor and ingredients! Needless to say I already have a return date with the kids! YUM! YUM! YUM!!

Yelp
Wow! Probably my second time visiting Velvet Taco. This location is horrific. First, I was the only one in the restaurant at that moment, The guy taking my order was slouching while taking my order completely prepared that he had to be at work I'm assuming. I waited a few minutes and then decided to use the restroom. Went to the restroom. Waited for somebody else to finish then proceeded to use the restroom to come out, and my two taco order was still not ready. When I asked about my order, he went to the printer, grab the order and just began to start it. Then a slew of other people came in. And as I was waiting there for an additional time, other people received their orders prior to me getting my to taco order. When I asked about it again, both workers were annoyed and kind of threw me my order. Not sure what kind of service that is, but it won't be one that I will be returning to. One star completely

Yelp
This is one of our favorite taco spots! So, of course, we decided to stop in on our anniversary for lunch. I know that probably sounds strange to celebrate your wedding anniversary at a fast casual taco joint, but if you've ever tried their red velvet cake, then maybe you understand. We had a red velvet wedding cake. So, it is a bit nostalgic for us to grab some tacos and then indulge in the best red velvet cake on the planet for our anniversary! Their cake is moist and delicious and so much better than I remember our wedding cake being. The cream cheese icing is thick, rich, and creamy, and then they serve caramel sauce with the cake, which just makes it a ridiculous indulgence and takes it over the top! We didn't just eat cake, though. LOL We also really enjoyed the Buffalo Chicken, Cuban Pig, brisket, and sweet chile shrimp tacos. The flavors are bold and unique.
google avatar

Yelp
Wow! 1st time! Son and daughter said these are big fancy tacos. Everything was so good!

Sami A.

Yelp
I love this place, they have so many taco options for us non meat eaters (vegetarian/pescatarian) and their drinks are phenomenal. The Outdoor seating is really cool too.
google avatar

Veremundo D.

Yelp
It's good if you feel like trying something different this place is pretty unique and tasty. Service is great and you definitely get what you pay for. Just know it's not authentic Mexican. It has its own category I would say.

Rita D.

Yelp
Today was my first experience here in the Plano location and it was amazing! Delicious food! Highly recommend! Here's a shout out to Cam for his out service!!!
google avatar

Mary J.

Yelp
I come here all the time. I love the tacos and the staff, But I don't enjoy being served a wet plate with my chips and queso. I have never had a complaint about this place except for my wet plate. Maybe Just watch out for Wet plates when you are served your food.
google avatar

Katie H.

Yelp
Everything here was delicious! The margaritas - both on ice and blended - were great! We tried nearly all the tacos on the menu and can say each one was great! The shrimp one was my personal favorite. Just know, this is a walk up to the counter and order kind of place!
google avatar

Paul V.

Yelp
I was visiting town and happened to see Velvet Taco as a highly-rated spot while browsing nearby places to eat with some coworkers. If anything, the ratings undersold it! The Velvet Taco menu draws you in immediately with the unique and bold flavor combinations. Tacos that you never imagined are right there, and the hardest part is deciding which to try. Ordering was easy, and although there was a bit of a hiccup as the rest of my party's orders got filled while mine was overlooked, it didn't sour the experience. They were able to get my order taken care of quickly once the issue was realized. The vibe in the place was laid back, orders were moving quickly, and the mix of outdoor and indoor seating was nice. I had the chicken and waffle, the Korean fried rice, and the spicy chicken tikka tacos and was thoroughly impressed! The different flavors came through as I'd hoped. I hope I visit another place with a Velvet Taco before too long to try some of the others.
google avatar

Leigh P.

Yelp
Can't recommend another taco fast pickup place any more than this place. Favorites are the blackened salmon tacos, fried fish and the Mexican cali bowl. Never disappoints!
google avatar

Elisabeth M.

Yelp
Taco of the week is. Drum roll..... tasty Shrimp PO Boy! Great service as usual. The shrimp was a little crunchier than expected, same goes for the salt level.

Yelp
Ever since I moved to Dallas, Velvet taco was on my list. Heard so many good things and trust me, this place didn't disappoint me. From Indian flavoured tacos to Korean mix, the variety is just amazing. I love their cauliflower taco, paneer taco, spicy tikka chicken, and used to love their falafel taco ( sadly that's discontinued ). I love the vibes of the place, gives a pleasant happy hour ish feel throughout the day (which is great) . When my parents were visiting Dallas from India, they loveeeed the food here. Perfect for a quick yet delicious bite. I'm just excited by the fact that there are so many newer locations opening closer to Frisco. Yayyy! *_*

Yelp
There are many taco places around here, each with its own unique offerings. No matter what your taco craving, you're sure to find something you like. Today, we decided to check out Velvet Taco. We ordered three different tacos: grilled salmon, Mexi-Cali shrimp, and Nashville chicken waffle taco. I loved the big piece of salmon with a generous amount of other toppings, which gave it a nice sweet and citrusy flavor. My wife got the shrimp taco and said it was delicious, so I'll take her words for it. (She's always right!) The two tacos were delicious, but the only complaint I have is that the taco shells were a bit too thin. They broke after my first bite, which was probably due to the large amount of ingredients and dressings they were holding. Other than that, we loved them. We also liked the Nashville chicken taco. The crispy chicken tenders were good, and the waffle shell added a unique and delicious sweetness to the mix. There are many other things on the menu, including Cuban pig, Korean fried rice, Kobe bacon burgers, fish and chips, red curry coconut queso, and more. If you want to have an adult drink to go with your food, they also have frozen margaritas. Overall, we had a great experience at Velvet Taco. The food was delicious, the service was friendly, and the atmosphere was casual and comfy. We would definitely recommend it to anyone looking for a great taco experience.
google avatar

Danielle C.

Yelp
I only ordered one item here: the spicy tikka chicken masala taco and I thought it was very delicious. I don't really like tacos in general, but I love Indian food so I wanted to try it! I usually don't like tortillas but I thought the flour tortilla they had was very soft and chewy which I liked. I liked the rice flavor and the chicken was not dry at all. It did indeed have a kick to it and the tikka masala flavor was incredibly savory and tasty. I tried a bite of my friend's guacamole and I also thought that was delicious. I would eat the tikka masala taco and try the other Indian one (paneer) as well if there ever is a next time!
google avatar

Doug C.

Yelp
Since our first visit here we have been to other locations several times and this one as well. I just don't write a review every time. So way overdue to plug this place again. Especially with great food and shade fronting W Park Blvd parking. They have a new menu combo (see photo) which makes our usual meal of two separate entre, one side and two drinks much cheaper. Check it out.
google avatar

Garland B.

Yelp
Just when I thought that good old fashion customer service was dead, this happened! In a world where you are required to talk to AI bots anytime you need service, customer service has dwindled to an all time low. So, it was extremely refreshing and surprising when I expressed dissatisfaction with my food, the manager apologized for the mishap, refunded my money, and allowed me to order more food without having to pay! Wow! I haven't experienced that kind of treatment in awhile. In my opinion, Velvet Taco has the best tacos around, better than Taco Joint or Torchy's. I was disappointed when my tacos were served cold. Instead of returning them, I ate them anyway (I don't normally do that). I walked out of the restaurant angry with myself for not saying anything and was ready to just move on. When I got in the car to drive away, I could not shake the feeling that I had, so I went back in and asked for the manager. I told Justin what transpired and without hesitation apologized and did everything he could to make it right. That's customer service at it's best! If you are in Allen, and you want great customer service and great tacos, visit Velvet Taco. You won't be disappointed!

Joanne M.

Yelp
Fast service and the tacos were very tasty. They are very friendly and help you out with the menu.
google avatar

Thomas T.

Yelp
Ok. I love this place for the cool combinations of tacos. Things I would not think to put on a taco works on a taco. My less than 5 star was bathroom. Get the velvet cake. It's really good too.
google avatar

Karima A.

Yelp
Went here for some tacos! This place was packed when we went but the service was quick! We ordered chicken tikka taco and buffalo chicken tacos! Both were amazing! Also, we signed up as new members and got chips and queso free! How great is that! Loved the blue chips!

Carolyn E.

Yelp
Velvet Taco in Plano is in a food court, meaning there is no signage visible from the street. Parking is very challenging. The food is great but I'll never go there again.

Robert F.

Yelp
Cam was great with his wonderful customer service. He was super helpful with my wife's Velvet Taco App. Great Place
google avatar

Natalie S.

Yelp
Amazing taco spot! Im usually hesitant on taco spots because you never truly know what youre going to get. After reading reviews i decided to try it out and am so glad i did! I ordered a chicken tikka taco and the cod fish taco. The tacos were bursting with flavor and i was full off only two. I also ordered a barbacoa (doesnt compare to the other two) and a free chips and salsa. The price is definitely worth it and very filling!
google avatar

D T.

Yelp
Ate here recently, and it was my first time trying Velvet Taco. The vibe at this location is pretty cool; nice shopping area with a good selection of restaurants and stores. Their patio is very nice and specious, but would be nicer if they had some fans w/ misters. The taco selection is great! Several choices of meat (beef, chicken, seafood & pork) and veggie tacos to choose from. Our group had the Chimichurri Steak, Brisket, Tikka Chicken, Picnic Chicken, Mexicali Shrimp, Fish & Chips, and the Smash Burger tacos !! All were delicious and had really fresh ingredients. Although we immensely enjoyed the food, two ppl in our party, who had the Sangria Swirl, both became sick , so we had to abruptly cut the evening short. Definitely will go again, but next time will stick with the beer
google avatar

Adrienne G.

Yelp
Looking for an easy work lunch, Velvet Taco was right across the street from the office. All kinds of tacos made to order & they were out of this world yummy I chose the battered cauliflower & it was paired with black beans, corn, avocado & a delish sauce all in a soft shell. I really liked how they put the calorie info on their site so you could be as healthy or indulgent as you want. Others got meaty options & all items were wolfed down in no time flat I also super liked their pairing of blue corn chips and guac. We'll be back!

Lokesh A.

Yelp
I had visited the plano location on Park on 07/15. The food was good the customer service was the worst. The guy taking the order had too much of an attitude.
google avatar

Dhara A.

Yelp
Staff was friendly and service was quick! My husband got the angus brisket and the chimichurri steak tacos! I got the Mexi-cali shrimp taco as well as the red curry coconut queso! The food was amazing!!
google avatar

Elaine K.

Yelp
This is a cute taco place. The outside looks decorated. Service was awesome, the cashier didn't rush me because it was my first time and I was deciding what to get. She was so friendly and helpful. I ordered brisket taco and tikka masala chicken. The brisket was absolutely scrumptious. Each bite was heaven with a good amount of meat plus the toppings and sauce. So good. It's a big taco too. The tikka was a huge change in taste and vibe but once I got to chewing it was also great and plenty of meat in there. These two tacos made me so so full and I have a huge appetite. My total with a fountain drink was $16.
google avatar

Laura W.

Yelp
Popped over to this restaurant for a dinner pick up today and it was perfection! What really impressed me was not only their delicious and consistent food, but also the customer service. The person handing me my order noticed that I looked down at the hot salsa bottles and immediately offered me to-go containers of their salsas. Just really appreciate that attention to detail and their willingness to serve you with a smile. Definitely recommend the spicy tikka chicken taco and white queso. I got the cauliflower taco to get some veggies in. Parking was very easy- there was some construction nearby but didn't block any parking spaces
google avatar

Joanna V.

Yelp
There is a lot of competition for hot taco spots with flares for authenticity, originality, or creativity. Velvet Tacos unconventionally takes the cake for creativity and fusion! I can't recall all the names of the tacos I ate, but one of them was with something Cuban in there - totally to drool for! They change up the flavors every week. Check out the one they had last winter (pictured). What's better to pair up with tacos, if it isn't some belchin' beer? Then the feast is complete. If you like fusion and a myriad of tickles for your taste buds, fill your fancy with some Velvet Tacos!
google avatar

Monali D.

Yelp
The best tacos in town! Nashville hot tofu is so flavorful and delicious! It's perfect! I always get this one and the beer battered cauliflower. My husband usually gets the paneer tikka taco (chicken tikka taco with paneer instead of chicken) and it's super delicious! The elote here is cheesy and flavorful, we usually add their hot sauce to make it more hot. Their tater tots are also delicious! Do try their hot sauce on your tacos, it just adds to the flavor. This is a self-service place, you go place the order and wait to pick the food. And the ambience is good to savor the tacos! Eating a taco is messy business but don't you worry, this place has a paper towel roll on almost every table. Such a small thing but so important, makes my dine-in experience better. Velvet Taco is special!
google avatar

Scott L.

Yelp
Great food. Great service. Never been disappointed with this location. The cashiers and staff are always attentive.
google avatar

Mark R.

Yelp
Stopped into the new spot in Plano, Grandscape complex. Very nice and clean. Same menu you'll find at all the restaurants but this one seemed to produce a much salter product. I had a #7 Cuban on corn and a #12 Angus on corn. The beef was saltier than the Cuban. Service was top notch as always.
google avatar

Phyllis C.

Yelp
Great place to bring people from out-of-town! My friends loved it so much, they wanted to eat here 2 nights in a row. The unanimous opinion among my group was a love for the Spicy Tikka Chicken and Mexi-Cali Shrimp. The tacos are a bit pricier than I'm used to as a native West Coaster, but they're generously sized and offering a unique concept, so I understand. As someone with maybe a smaller appetite than the average diner here, I found that 2 tacos was just enough to be full, 3 had me stuffed. You'll definitely want to eat more, though. I've tried the Spicy Tikka Chicken, Korean Fried Rice, Falafel, and Grilled Flank Steak. I would recommend the fusion items on the menu, the Grilled Flank Steak was my least favorite as I found it the least impressive. It tasted like any other taco. The Falafel is a great choice for making you feel like you're making a healthier choice, and it's even better with a drizzle of the Heat Sauce before each bite. The Korean Fried Rice is my go-to, the meat is tender and beautifully paired with jalapeños and pickled red onions. I'd say Velvet Taco is a Dallas must-visit restaurant. A tip: sit down at a table and scan the QR code to order from your phone to skip long lines and get your food faster!
google avatar

Rashmi S.

Yelp
Good variety of tacos, and nice place to try if you are vegetarian m. They have cauliflower, tofu, paneer tacos. Elote corn could have been steamed, they tasted too raw and bland. Service was fast. Place was nice and clean.
google avatar

Jeff M.

Yelp
I have been a customer for 2 years and I'll continue being a customer. I think the management change for the better. I'm however giving this joint a 5 star review because they have Stone beer! Hands down the absolute best beer to pair with tacos and meat. Keep on ordering that stone beer!!!! The only taco shop around town that serves craft beer. . Tonight I had the #11, and #5.5. I recommend the 5.5. (Tell the closing manager to turn on the lights in the patio area! I really wanted to sit out there but it's hard with no lights.). Keep it up though, I'll be back.
google avatar

Nick J.

Yelp
Velvet Taco is brilliant, fun, and exciting. Never words you'd associate with eating tacos, but those are the feels this joint drums up. So many varieties and flavors. They have something for everyone. If you like bold and rich there's the slow-roasted angus brisket in a comté cheese encrusted flour tortilla. Man, is that one a taste bud slayer. Craving something light? Then the Picnic Chicken with avocado crema and warm honey-dijon potato salad will love ya oh so gently. If the VT you visit sports the Korean fried rice, that is a MUST! It's just a trip to have some delicious fried rice with grilled pineapple and Korean pork in a tortilla, but it is such a beautiful marriage of flavor it's like you're eating art with one exquisite piquancy painting across your palate after another. My only gripe about VT is their margarita game is not on point. I won't dock them a star because I can survive the place without a maggie. It would just be nice if their variants didn't lean so far from sickeningly sweet to boringly bland. With so many possible combos I need to go in one time and get all the chicken tacos. Then, on another week, all the seafood tacos. Then veg. Then pork. Then beef. Maybe grade the best from each group and make future runs a culmination of categorical champions.
google avatar

Ajay S.

Yelp
This place pretty much sells tacos you couldn't get elsewhere. We bought about 5 tacos at roughly $4-5 each. A little expensive. I tried a couple and they're just ok. The hot sauce seems store bought. The place was crowded and seems people like them, but I'd pass.
google avatar

Kimberley K.

Yelp
I have never in my life been treated so poorly as I was tonight (2/8/24) at your Plano location. I order pickup through Velvet Taco Plano usually once or twice a week and have done so for a while. They were very busy tonight and I pulled up into the drive-thru with two people in front of me. Things were a little slow but they were helped and went on their way. When I pulled up to the window I was completely ignored for almost 10 minutes. I rang the bell and a tall thin very frazzled guy came to the window and I told him I had a to-go order and gave him my name. He said he'd be right back. Another 10 minutes went by as he continued to help everyone else but me. Both vehicles behind me went around me and parked and went in and they were helped immediately while I was still sitting at the window. Very upset I finally left the drive thru, ran into the restaurant, asked to speak to the manager. and it was the same tall thin guy. He began telling me to "look around" that they were "very busy" and that "everyone was having to wait." Feeling like I had been treated like crap I started to cry and I told him I didn't understand why everyone else had been helped and I had not been. I told him he helped everyone that went around me and he said "Well if you saw it working for them then maybe you should have tried it." I told him I wanted a refund and he said, "gladly." I left the restaurant crying, shaking, an incredibly upset. You don't need my once or twice a week $38 orders to stay in business but treating someone like shit that did nothing wrong is absolutely inexcusable.

Yelp
I like to order the grilled salmon taco, and in the past it's been in 2 tortillas, most likely to keep it from falling apart. This time it was one corn tortilla and it fell apart as I picked it up. :/ Also, I noticed there wasn't as much salmon as is usually in the taco. I also ordered the curry queso and blue chips. The queso was barely warm and a crust had formed on the top. That's kinda nasty, made me feel like it has been sitting there awhile, not scooped fresh for my order. I wish I had taken a photo. This visit was disappointing for me. They haven't last me as a customer yet though.
