It goes hand in hand with the food — salads, tacos, quesadillas, empanadas, a burger, and more are all $13 and under. New Orleans’s 2022 Eater Awards Winners for Best New Restaurant, Bar, and More - Eater New Orleans

"When Bayou Road neighborhood bar Pirogues closed early on in the pandemic, it was the kind of loss that stirred up a sense of doom. But the new incarnation of the simple corner space, Velveteen Lounge and Restaurant, invoked the reverse — a sense of hope for new, sustainable opportunities in New Orleans’s restaurant landscape that also honor tradition and legacy. The 100 percent worker-owned Velveteen Lounge opened in May 2022, with an eclectic, vintage feel and walls in soothing colors displaying works by local artists — all available for purchase — and a unique bar program. Velveteen has a small menu of straightforward cocktails, but can do just about anything — depending on the drink, however, it might be made with a small spirit brand customers have never seen before. Beers all come in a can or bottle only, and wine options are unexpected for a neighborhood dive — small producers and natural options line the bar, though everything is reasonably priced, including the food: salads, tacos, quesadillas, empanadas, a burger, and more are all $12 and under. It all goes hand in hand with the name: “Velvet is a luxury material,” co-owner Brendan Gordon says. “Velveteen is a knockoff material. Because everyone should be able to have nice things in a nice space.”" - Clair Lorell

This is the best bar I’ve ever been to! The energy is incredible. The staff is the greatest—extremely kind, caring, funny and fun. The patrons were equally enjoyable. I made several friends who I returned to see night after night. Drinks are unique, fresh and strong, and the food is divine. 6/5 stars for being an LGBTQ haven and the sister-bar of my dreams.

Excellent food + drinks + vibes! The basil matcha fizz (w a shot of vodka) is the best drink I’ve had in a long time, but everything on the menu is great. Also highly recommend the fried brussels sprouts. What a special neighborhood spot, Amber and Brendan are the best!!!

This is one of my favorite spots in the city!! They have a diverse selection of drinks including zero proof alcohol and everything on the food menu is delicious. A workers cooperative, revamped neighborhood bar that is committed to highlighting New Orleans locals with hot/queer bartenders, what’s not to love?

This is the definition of a hidden gem!! The pulled Pork “bahn Mi” was probably the best thing I had on my trip to New Orleans. The salad had the sweetest cherry tomatoes. The smoked rosemary hibiscus iced tea was delicious and refreshing. Amber was so nice and made our visit even better. Would come back for this place!

Food is SO GOOD. Service is great. Love coming here again and again. Great selection of drinks/wine/beer. Couldn’t ask for a better neighborhood spot.

Had a beer at the bar while waiting for my takeout and it was great. The burger, gorditas and spinach and artichoke dip were all awesome.

This is low-key my favorite bar in New Orleans. It's off the beaten path so it's rarely crowded, it's got a mellow local vibe, great food & cocktails, friendly staff, and overall warm & welcoming atmosphere. It's always my go-to when I'm tired of the crowds in the quarter or Frenchman. Highly recommended.

This bar does not belong in the area. Bartenders are blatantly rude and stuck up when I’ve visited with nothing but us being kind. Slow service for simple drinks when there are only 3 patrons. Food has gone downhill. When they got a new menu and gave it to me and I decided to not get food I was told “I see you can’t read”. It’s an excellent spot for a bar/restaurant for the neighborhood but it’s a shame it’s the atmosphere of Velveteen. I’d be happy if they packed up and moved.
