Venice Cafe – St. Louis, Missouri - Gastro Obscura

"In 1978, Jeff Lockheed purchased a house in the neighborhood of Benton Park. After letting friends hang around for nearly a decade, he formalized his hospitality and converted his home into a café. He applied for a liquor license shortly thereafter (his patrons were already practicing the BYOB model), and, according to the bar’s Facebook, “then took on the business model it follows today: Booze and beauty for cash.” The beauty that Venice Café alludes to—concentrated, vivid, and frenetic—swarms the property, both inside and out. The patio is filled with cement statues covered in tiles, and a collection of artwork created by Lockheed himself is visible through the window. Inside, mosaics and quirky assemblages blanket every visible surface. Venice achieves the kind of glow patrons expect from a barroom by blending the soft emanations of more than 20 different light fixtures in yellow, red, green, and blue. These collections are the result of decades of collection and curation, and Lockheed welcomes donations. Simply drop your gift off by the alley door and it will either be added to the gallery or disposed of. Downstairs, you’ll find an ATM (the bar is cash-only), along with a fish tank, turtles, and a continued expanse of mosaics that flows into two bathrooms and surrounds the toilets. To find them, just follow the stairs beneath the neon sign that reads “Shitters.” The Explorer’s Lounge, which occupies the upstairs level, opens on Friday and Saturday nights. Mr. Waylon Slithers—a king snake known for napping in a vacant turtle shell—greets guests from his tank behind the bar. Taxidermy and artwork dot the room. Attached to the lounge is a bathroom that goes by The Blue Hole and is filled with curios, from ceramic lions to ancient chests to monkey statues that hold toilet paper to more mosaics. Outside, the walls are covered in ashtrays, lighters, action figures, and more bric-a-brac. During the city’s warmer months, “The Garden” opens up, complete with spring foliage. There’s also a functioning “boat bar”—made from the front end of a boat. Patrons saddle up to the outside while a bartender mixes cocktails from behind the steering wheel. For those who don’t like liquor, the bar also serves up beer and wine. Two resident turtles, Myrtle and Shemmy, occupy the adjacent pond. On Lockheed’s request, “Please don’t throw pennies in the pond. You’ll hurt the shell babies and your dumb wish will never come true.” Know Before You Go With all the art surrounding you, it's easy to miss the "Cash Only" signs. There's an ATM downstairs." - p puentesmpaula, Collector of Experiences, philtuths, tonycompton, JCinSTL, Michael Reinhardt, mossum, puentesmpaula

This bar is among the most unique, most artistic, and most importantly loving and inclusive vibe. It also has the most mosaics anywhere in St. Louis short of the Basilica. Do yourself a favor and GO!! FYI cash only.

I'm an artist so I found the place pretty cool and interesting. Loved the Mosaic tiles all throughout the establishment. They serve drinks but no food, which was a bummer for me since I love food lol. But it was a neat experience.

Google
Amazing place, extremely unique. If you're uve never been, give it a shot. It's like a miniature City Museum that's a bar. For instance, they have doll heads hanging from a clothesline. The crowd is a little older, which means it's more relaxed. If you want a more rowdy place, go to Soulard. This is where friendships are made.

My wife and I headed to The Venice Cafe for nightcap drinks on our date night. The decor was quirky and interesting, though a bit over the top. Live music added to the lively atmosphere. Since the weather was nice, we opted for the patio, which was a fantastic choice--it was lovely out there. You have to self serve and order the drinks at the bar with cash only. A couple of things to note: the whole place is cash only, but they do have an ATM for convenience. Also, since it was the weekend, there was a $5 entry fee per person. Despite these quirks, we had a great time and enjoyed the unique vibe.

I stopped in for a visit to see the amazing collection of art and other decorations. I was not disappointed. Everything from the walls to floors to ceiling plus everything else in the cafe was all visually interesting. There were definitely things I liked and some not so much. It's obviously a local hang out where everyone knows each other. While called a cafe, it's a bar. There's no food except some pretzels available. They do serve canned soda for anyone not drinking. I went in the afternoon when they opened. They are also known for their nightly entertainment. On Mondays it's open mic night but the rest of the week brings in a variety of musical groups.

A great place to hop over to after a concert at Off Broadway or to bring visitors to show them a little bit of STL nightlife. Live music and a gorgeous patio. It’s probably going to be one of the more eccentricity decorated places you visit. I always have a good time. Four stars because they sometimes charge a cover, it’s cash only at the bar, and the drinks are small. ATM in the basement for a fee. Bathroom is in the basement and very cute, but may be difficult to reach for someone with mobility issues. Edit to respond to business: I understand it’s an old building and that adds to the charm. My own house is the same. I love the place and don’t mind the cover/it being cash only. Just giving everyone realistic expectations who has never been here and to steer clear if you don’t like charm or are expecting to show up with just a credit card like many people nowadays.

Google
Go for the atmosphere!! It’s an art pics in and of itself. The vibe is great. The drinks were very reasonably priced. Plenty of parking on the street and they have a parking lot.

Google
What a fun place!!! Chris and I were looking for pre dinner cocktails and music on a Saturday evening and the Venice cafe delivered!!! Small bar/music area, but multiple other spaces to relax- the music- courtesy of liquid gold, was awesome, reasonably priced drinks, great service, unique decor, and an older, welcoming crowd made for a memorable time. Highly recommended for visitors and locals alike!!!

Madison M.

Yelp
The ambiance of this place is the absolute coolest. It's so beautiful and cool. I can't wait to go back when the patio is open! Only reason it's not 5 stars is because it's really really loud
google avatar

Karen N.

Yelp
So hard to describe the atmosphere in this place, but it a so unique and one of a kind. It is a late night destination . We walked in and was overwhelmed seeing stuff everywhere, Every nook and crany is filled with a knick knack , funky art, or pictures, and you cannot possibly see everything. There was live music playing which was good. We were fortunate to find an area near the bathroom (which is a must see) with cozy couches . Drink selection was very good and decent prices. This is a must visit.

Yelp
Great place to hear some Music and grab a drink!!! Can't wait to go back and enjoy the patio when it opens!

Yelp
I love love love this place! It's my favorite patio in St. Louis. I know it says cafe but there is no food....you can eat next door at Fraser's. Venice is all about the vibe and eclectic decor. They have great bands, great bartenders, and more art to look at than an art museum. Patio opens may 1st. Don't smoke and leave your kids and dogs at home.
google avatar

Yelp
What a GEM! I've heard of this magical place called Venice Cafe, and it definitely lived up to the hype. My friend and I ventured here after eating dinner at Frazier's, which is a hop skip and a jump down the road. This has been one of those spots that has been on my "I must go here list" but was never executed. When we drove by on our way to Frazier's, I knew that it was time. There was live music here on the night that we went, so there may be a cover charge if there is a band. It was $5, so nothing wildly crazy. You walk in and it's like you step into a dram world. The decor is an array of items, spanning from all things shiny, plastic skeletons, sculptures, and mosaic pieces that give it an artsy vibe. Music was solid, definitely unique and it fit the spot. I got a glass of wine and my friend got an old fashioned. We made our way out to the patio and I am so sad it isn't patio season because I can imagine this place is amazing when it is. There are nooks and crannies that make it feel intimate but is still pretty large. It truly is one of a kind!

Yelp
I used to frequent Venice Cafe in the mid 90's and just visited again for the first time in over 20 years. It was and is just as fabulous as I remember. I love the eclectic atmosphere and the patio area. The drink menu is stellar. The neighborhood is cool and trendy. The highlight of this place, however, has always been the good people and the live music. You really feel like you belong here and some of the performances are really, really good. Not to mention the frequent open mic nights allow for amateurs to get in front of a welcoming audience and do what they love to do. The Venice Cafe will never go out of style because it is a beautiful unicorn. Please don't ever change!

Yelp
Holy cow, if you're looking for eclectic, you found it. In fact, the environment can be a little over stimulating, if you are prone to that. There are Knick knacks EVERYWHERE. But that's a big part of the charm! I've been here a few times and have never been disappointed. I'm a fan of cheap and strong (not just in men), and I found it here. Great prices, good strength drinks. Nothing worse than getting a beverage and wondering, "uh, is there alcohol in here?" I dislike stingy bars. The patio has recently fully reopened and it's pretty darn cool. So much stuff to look at. You could come here 47 times and still not see it all. They do have live music on the weekends. Word of warning- this is a cash only place, and they do not serve food.
google avatar

Sara G.

Yelp
Venice Cafe in Benton Park, St. Louis, is a cash-only gem that seamlessly blends a watering hole with a vibrant performance venue. The funky folk art and lively mosaics, both inside and outside, create an atmosphere that's as eclectic as it is welcoming. The wacky, goofy charm extends to the live music, playing from 9:00 pm to 1:00 am, Monday through Saturday. This vivid burst of color everywhere is everything I needed.
google avatar

Rie U.

Yelp
TLDR: cash only bar with funky decor, great live music, and cheap drinks! We were drawn into Venice Cafe by the energetic live music spilling out into the street. We'd just finished stuffing our faces at Frazer's so we decided to get a night cap here and it didn't disappoint! The band was awesome and the crowd was great too. Not gonna lie, I was pretty hammered so I don't remember a lot but I know I had a blast!

Yelp
Ok ya I'm obsessed with this place. Patio vibes A+. We stopped in based on a recommendation, and were so happy we did. It was quiet on a Wednesday afternoon, but honestly such a relaxing vibe on their patio. Friendly locals, comfortable seating, lots to look at. The boat bar was super unique and everywhere you look, there's more and more to look at. It's honestly just amazing how much work must have gone into this place. It's hard to explain it without photos, so just take a look! I ordered the Bloody Mary (and later a wine) and my friend got a rum punch. All drinks were great and we felt welcome to stay as long as we wanted. Would for sure recommend this place to anyone in town looking for something out of their comfort zone to check out!
google avatar

Courtney W.

Yelp
Wonderful atmosphere. So much to look at outside and inside. The outdoor patio is very cool!
google avatar

Lisa W.

Yelp
So i came here because i searched dinner and live music and apparently they don't serve food anymore, but I'm so glad i came because this place is simply amazing. They said in the weekend the upstairs bar is open and you can look down on the live music. I wish i were here for the weekend, but I'll have to remember it and come back. Ice cold Labatt Blue. Where else can you sip a Canadian pilsner while looking at the spectacle that is this bar?!? Lol If you come make sure you go outside and check out the outdoor bar. Simply astonishing!
google avatar

Colan M.

Yelp
Venice Cafe in St Louis is a fantastic spot with live music, eclectic decor, and reasonable prices. The NOLA vibe with a splash of Woodstock makes for a unique and fun atmosphere. It can get crowded, but there are plenty of nooks and crannies to explore. Highly recommended for a fun and unique experience in St Louis!
google avatar

Lexi M.

Yelp
Are you looking for a quirky spot with some amazing live music? This is the spot! I've been wanting to go to this place for so long! It was everything that everyone has described and so much more. The outdoor area is a one of a kind spot and will have you playing I spy. The drinks come quick and the music is fantastic! This is a perfect spot for drinks and great music.
google avatar

Nicole R.

Yelp
This bar is a hidden gem. Live music often that never disappoints. Try this place out and enjoy a classy scene like no other.
google avatar

Wanda H.

Yelp
So, the building itself is amaaaaazing! Words canNOT describe!!! The service was good and fast. Prices seem very reasonable. The cocktails were only so-so though. I know they're basic, and that wasn't really my problem with them. Just thought they could've been better. That, and NO food service! When I'm drinkin', I really could use some sort of food. You can order out, and have food delivered, but that's just not as user friendly. Would definitely come back though!
google avatar

Yelp
When you're in the mood for something a little different this is what happens. Eclectic was born here. Fun for drinks and music. Bring your cash.
google avatar

Orange J.

Yelp
One of the coolest blogs in STL (tie with the city museum). I love that there are hidden rooms. Has to be the best patio in STL. I'm a credit card girlie so I find the cash only - bummer (From a business standpoint I get it)
google avatar

diana h.

Yelp
I absolutely love coming here; this place is the definition of eclectic. The interior is pretty intimate on the first floor, and there is a small upstairs that's open on the weekend, but the patio has tons of seating. It's pretty awesome, and would be a super cool first date if you're into that as there is tons to look at and several little places you can have some privacy. The bar is cash only, so be warned, but there is an ATM downstairs (where the restrooms are as well). We came on a Tuesday evening, and there weren't many people except the bartender and some regulars. The bartender was playing backgammon with a patron, and they were super chill in letting me watch and ask questions about the game. I thoroughly enjoyed the laid back nature of this place and would easily become a regular here myself if I lived within walking distance. They also gave some top notch recommendations for Frazers next door. 15/10 would come here again.
google avatar

James T.

Yelp
Eclectic fun in an artsy atmosphere. But no food and they only take cash, so plan ahead.

Norma Jo W.

Yelp
This incomparable funky bar and music venue in St Louis since 1988, with amazing tile-work, quirky finds and hidden finds both inside and outside, is the creative offspring of long time St Louis artist, Jeffrey Lockheed

Helen D.

Yelp
It's truly a vibe. I love local holes in the wall. Yanno, the ones that you walk into for the first time and every single person turns around to see what random person just walked into their bar. The bartenders are fantastic. A lot of incredible live music.
google avatar

Alexander C.

Yelp
Definitely the most eclectic bar you'll ever visit. I spent most of my time just looking around the walls and ceiling admiring the tile work and everything they have hung up. Plus, they have live music pretty much every night! If you're visiting or have someone coming to town, definitely check this place out!
google avatar

Drevin S.

Yelp
Great spot to get a drink or two. I can't even imagine how long it took to set up all the decor here. It's super weird in the best way possible and I'll definitely be going back with friends. Only downside is that it's cash only but they have an atm there so no worries. I got the rum punch and it was perfection... excited to try some of the others on the menu. They don't serve food there but you can get food delivered which is nice.
google avatar

Martin M.

Yelp
the vibes here is immaculate. everywhere you look it's another thing and another. the drinks are strong and the staff is laid back. they even had live music that had me hooting and hollering. just remember she's cash only (they do have an atm downstairs just in case)
google avatar

Misty S.

Yelp
This place definitely had a NOLA vibe to it and I was transported to a different place when I walked in. There are so many things to look at and the decor is wild. There are lots of art and tiles to amuse your eyes. There was live music from 5p - 8p when I was there on a Saturday. Only the garden area was opened because they haven't reopened the inside due to COVID-19. ....| \ _ , , , - - , , _ , .../ , ` . - ' ` ' . _ \ - ; ; ; , _ ..| , a - ) ) _ . ; . Yelp
Venice cafe is an awesome place! The decorations are great. It's a fun place. Sometimes they have open mic nights or bands playing. Drink prices are pretty reasonable and the staff is always friendly!

Tiff H.

Yelp
Place always has good vibes, interesting people, and amazing live music. Always consistent.
google avatar

Jonnathan J.

Yelp
Really funky place... there's so much history on those walls. Really interesting. The place is cash only (which means, really good prices). The menu is really simple, not many options but enough if you're not too picky, if you are maybe the drinks menu won't be enough. Food wise they have this small menu (sandwich mostly) that's from a place across the street (I think). Didn't get any so, no opinion on that. The night I went the band was a blues one, entertaining for sure.
google avatar

Heather S.

Yelp
Especially cool place! This.place says good bye to the conventional bar scene. It was so fun!

Toms M.

Yelp
easily most interesting bar in st louis. music on point, summer patio on point, staff is the best
google avatar

Andrea Z.

Yelp
I can't believe I've never heard of this place! If you're looking for a unique bar in St. Louis you've gotta check this place out. Live music on the weekends as well! There is a $5 cover since they have music, but this place is worth it to even just come in and take a look around. The inside bar area is pretty small but the decor is awesome and the patio is very large. Coolest bar spot I've been in St. Louis!

Erik L.

Yelp
If I could give this place 6 stars I would!!!! Most visually delightful bar that I've been to an all of planet earth.
google avatar

Brian K.

Yelp
There's been so many superlatives thrown at Venice Cafe, that it's hard to create new reviews. So, if I could focus on one thing that's always different- the people you take with you. Last night a couple and I went, and one of them hadn't been there before. It always seems like a new place when you take someone new. Finding a new room, like the tiki room upstairs or a small enclave on the patio and appreciating the many intoxicating and intricate mosaics while slugging some seriously legit cocktails. I imagine Covid was hard on this place, as are some occasional bad reviews. I think, you either get it or you don't when it come to Venice. And for those of us that know, keep coming back. I missed this old friend and feel like they have missed us. And if you haven't been - Hope I see you there soon for the first time.
google avatar

Tricia W.

Yelp
Not ADA friendly. Service dog refused... husband has brain injury we were asked to leave. And yeah..... we had our paperwork "doesn't matter" states the owner "I don't like dogs and don't care if you are disabled"
google avatar

Emily K.

Yelp
Very cool atmosphere and great patio. You could come here and stay for hours just looking at everything that is on the wall and outside. The only complaint I have is it is a cash only bar and the ATM was broken when we came so I couldn't get cash out.
google avatar

Isaac B.

Yelp
So I had never been to this bar before but every day I drive by it and think, why am I not drinking there? I rolled thru the other night and the place was very chill and friendly, I ain't have cash, so I did not end up staying,... but I will be back try one I bake some more bread.
google avatar

Angelina L.

Yelp
The most unique funky dive bar you'll ever stumble upon. What I like most about Venice cafe is the people. Everyone who works there and goes there are so friendly and open. The decor is something you have to see to truly understand what I mean about being transferred into a different dimension. There is no place quite like Venice cafe and if you are ever in St. Louis area you need to check it out! Also on mondays they do open mic night and the talent is amazing! Very inspiring individuals

Ali M.

Yelp
Very neat looking place. It's definitely something to see, like walking into an art installation. 3 stars only because it took the bartender a very long time to serve us. We walked up clearly ready to order a drink but instead she went on a 10-15 minute (no joke) monologue to us and we could not get a word in to place our order :/ Seems like the staff just need training. It shouldn't take 15 minutes to get served with no line and canned/bottled drinks! Be aware they require a vax card right now to enter. We didn't mind this but some might.

Yelp
HAPPY HOUR review If you're looking for a fantastic happy hour, Venice Cafe has it covered. It lasts from 4-8pm (not one of those dumb over-at-6 "happy" hours) and you can get beers and well drinks from $1.50 to $2.50. The large patio outside is a feast for the eyes, and has all sorts of good seating spots and locations. Great for dates or larger groups. The music switched from reggae, jazz, latin, and even a little Johnny Cash. Be forewarned, there are some hungry mosquitoes out there that come out when it gets dark... There's a great selection of food, I would say the Calpyso burger ($9) is an absolute must. It's nicely seasoned with jerk spices and curry mayo, and every bite is a flavor blast with some solid spicy heat. I don't think there's anything quite like this burger...it is special. It also came with a nice hunk of grilled pineapple on the side (yum!) and some mango slaw (decent). The chicken sandwich ($9) is just OK, the burger is far more satisfying. For vegetarians, there's a delicious pasta served with mushrooms. And not your typical white/button mushrooms, I think these were chantrelles. There was a lot of them and they were very tasty, and they lacked the earthiness that most mushrooms have. Even mushroom-phobics would appreciate this dish. The mango empanadas (3 for $5) come out scalding hot, so let em cool for a bit before you dive in. They're quite nice. Definitely add Venice Cafe to your happy hour rotation.
google avatar

Audrey B.

Yelp
Very cool bar, there is so much decor you will never run out of things to look at. Friendly staff, fun crowd. Actually pretty small interior, the patio is great though. Typical drink options - sort of a "dive bar" vibe.
google avatar

Madison N.

Yelp
What an amazing, magical place in the heart of STL. I felt like I was in Wonderland meets Halloweentown meets an insane asylum and I loved every single second of it. There is a ton of outdoor seating with all different ambiances depending on your mood. The drinks are cheap and the music is great, I can't wait to go back here!
google avatar

Karley C.

Yelp
What a quirky place! We were staying at an Airbnb in the area, and the host insisted that we check this place out. A great place to come at the end of the day to unwind and enjoy a drink. Love: the decor was so unique and truly off the wall! Also, there was local music (talented people in STL). Tip: it is cash only, but they also have an ATM in the basement.
google avatar

Courtney F.

Yelp
WHAT A UNIQUE SPOT. There's no other great way to describe it other than go see for yourself. In Budapest, they started creating bars out of buildings that had fallen during the fall of communism, and instead of rebuilding the buildings, they just added and eclectic variety of objects and items and made these crazy bars, and Venice Cafe reminds me of them. There's nothing else like this around (and I haven't even seen a place like this in the US before coming here). It is cash only, so make sure to have some on hand, but they also have an ATM if needed. Drinks are incredibly priced (seriously so cheap). The patio is a cool maze with SO much to look at. Live music nights are great. Check it out, you'll love it!

Molly W.

Yelp
It's good, 5 stars if they would offer anything NA besides juice and soda. Would be a fun place to hang out more.
google avatar

Chelle K.

Yelp
Venice Cafe is one-part hipster, two-parts eclectic, and in total a great spot for a night out in the Benton Park neighborhood. Think Philadelphia's-Magic-Gardens meets St.-Louis's-City-Museum. With potted plants, shiny mosaic tiles, and random decorations everywhere, Venice Cafe is like a never-ending game of I-Spy for adults. Between the live music, outdoor patio, and three-story space that looks like it was assembled from nothing but garage-sale findings, the ambience at Venice Cafe can't be beat. Just be warned, the bar is cash-only, and they stop serving food relatively early in the night. So be sure to stop at the ATM on the way in, and fill up on snacks before you get your night started at Venice Cafe.
google avatar

Chris D.

Yelp
What an eclectic, slightly creepy place. We went here for drinks on a Friday night, and ended up having a great time! First, the venue. It's in a converted townhouse and is stuffed to the brim with knickknacks galore. Mannequin heads, stuffed bears, weird paintings and chandeliers, you name it. There's even a live snack in a tank behind the upstairs bar! There's an outdoor space similarly decorated, but it was closed for the winter (too cold outside anyway). They happened to have live jazz music when we visited, which set the vibe perfectly! Great ambiance to hang out with friends and enjoy some drinks. The drinks are fine, and that's alright! A small selection of beer, including some local St. Louis craft options, standard liquor selection, and some wine. Close to dive-bar on the options. But a very cool place to spend an evening!
google avatar

Andria M.

Yelp
Quirkiest place in town! I recently brought out-of-town family here and we had a blast! My second time here. The patio has fun sculpture and water features. A lot of mosaic artwork. Inside contains the most random and eccentric collection of knick knacks, taxidermy, artwork and more. Some of it a bit creepy. Check out the bathroom on the second floor! Good drink prices. Friendly and fun staff!
google avatar

Alex B.

Yelp
Oh my God, I'm OBSESSED!!! Venice Cafe reminds me of home, and that's why I love it. I will have to update this review after I go again (probably tonight!?!) and spend more time there. Back in St. Petersburg, FL, we used to have this restaurant that always had a live band, and it was outside in a beautiful courtyard decorated with Christmas lights and huge trees right in the courtyard. Venice Cafe has all that and more. There's not an inch of space that isn't adorned with some kitschy knick-knack or cheap tchotchke, and there's a seemingly endless feel to the property. There's so much to be explored here in every patio. There's even a second floor that we didn't get to see because it was closed off. The stairs leading down to the bathroom have a neon sign that says "The Shitter"; there's some sort of dripping terrarium with a few vermillion koi swimming at the bottom, and the bathroom is cute too. We plan on coming back to get THE BUCKET of their delicious signature drink which is sort of like a mojito and mint limeade had a baby!

Yelp
This place is quirky and fun! I like how laid back this bar was. They had a small band playing inside on the night I went. They sounded very good - they had saxophone players and a jazzy sound. But it was a little tight inside and my friends and I were only looking to go for one drink and then do some bar hopping afterwards. They do have an outdoor bar, but they seem pretty limited to only bottles and cans - nothing on draft. The bartender was very friendly, and another staff member came out before we left and thanked us for coming. So the service was good. This place draws a decent crowd. I can tell they are known for their eclectic decor, inside and outside. Lots of interesting things to take in, and it's nothing like any bar you've ever been to before. Go and check it out - it's a fun time.
