Three New Pizza Places Show LA’s Italian Food Growth - Eater LA

"First up is the Venice Way Pizza, a newcomer that lands at the ground floor of the longstanding Hotel Erwin early next month. Ownership there partnered up with none other than Noel Brohner, who has spent years working around LA and beyond as a pizza consultant for some of the biggest restaurant names including Bestia. Brohner specializes in high-hydration doughs, and for Venice Way Pizza he’s turning those into five-inch square “slabs” of pan pizza, similar in crispy exterior to a Detroit style, but with even more air and lift inside." - Farley Elliott

Google
soo over priced for what? Its not good at all the pizza was burnt and hard. The cheese fully slid off with the vegetables.

Google
Probably the best pizza I have ever had! The salad was perfect too. I ordered the Venice way special supreme pizza and the chicken Caesar salad. Keith did his thing and it was delicious. Amazing job! Keith is the man!

Google
While waiting for our Eggslut sandwiches we happened to spy this unassuming pizza place with just the order window visible. We decided to get one slice/slab each and did not regret it. Delicious! Will definitely be going back. Very affordable as well!

Google
Just wanted to try it out. Really disappointed though; it seems that this kind of place likes to target tourists by charging prices that people would pay for actual 5-star pizza. Slices come in squares and they use pepperoni that you buy from the market and randomly sprinkle it around the pie. Payed $40 total for one pie. They are $6 a slice.

Alex Gilroy

Google
For the price ($32 for a whole pie) this is pretty mediocre pizza. Decent texture but the flavor is lacking, could use way more cheese. Bottom line: avoid unless you really want it.

I drove from Orange County to Venice to see one of my friends at Hotel Erwin. I was hungry and went and sat at Venice Way Pizza lounge. Suddenly the hotel door man knocked on the Venice Way Pizza hardly and said you should leave this place soon because the owner doesn’t want a free loader ! Well I didn’t know that I should first and sit at the lounge but I was really surprised by the Pizza lace management very rude behavior. So although I was hungry I didn’t order anything but a can of hard liquor. I understand we’re living in a capitalist society and nothing is free in this world but the owner’s behavior without even knowing intentions is very poor and disappointing and this deeply matters to me. I know this establishment is enjoying the huge crowds who are visiting the hotel and Venice and probably they even care. But I had share this with the readers who manners and good customer service are important for them.

Got a delicious House Salad deep dish slice in less than 3 minutes! Always awesome and original and delicious!

Google
So good! I had the special with cauliflower yummy! Perfect for a quick to go pizza by the slice option as well as hanging and eating at the hotel. Beer and wine available there as well. Great addition!

Yelp
Found this place just walking around Venice beach. When I passed by the window of the shop, the pizza immediately caught my eye! It just looked like really good pizza so after walking past ,I turned around and ordered a slice. Omg!This is some of the best pizza I have ever had! It was kinda like deep dish but not exactly. Crunchy bite with soft fluffy inside. The combination of soft and crunch is perfect. The cheese ratio was perfect.. as well as the sauce! I was just in love with the slice I got. The service was good.. the buff guy was friendly. Any time I am in Venice I will be stopping here! Firee!!!!!!

Yelp
SOS makes KILLER pizza! Y'all better come here and get some. This guy has skills...he cares about food! Soooo good. I just devoured my slices! -Marque

Yelp
YOU SUCK!!!!! Tonight u changed my cheese pizza order to a veggie pizza because you had NO cheese.... 2 weeks ago you were out of dough. I live here so i can get GOOD pizza without the bullshit!!!!! NEVER AGAIN. definitely will be disputing the charge. you all suck at pizza!

Yelp
After picking up a few slices for dinner, I realized what they do best, and that is not the pizza party at home, but handing out slices to the party people walking by, needing a good chunk of bread to soak up the fun. I mean, it was alright, but it's more like drunky food. Actually, what I loved the most was taking the leftover crusts on my bike ride the next day, they were the PERFECT mid ride snack!

Yelp
To be extremely real: Anyone who has ever been in the vicinity of New York City would make better pizza, which is a rude thing to say, but this place wants to be a dollar slice New York spot but costs 5x as much and makes trash pizza. Really sorry because Venice deserves better but it's just a brutally bad slice. The vibe is like: foreign investment decided to make a pizza place, which was nominally a smart idea because Windward easily deserves a drunk pizza spot. But I've had dozens of drunk pizza slices and have never had anything this bad. Just extremely terrible pizza that gets away with it because the rent is expensive or whatever.

Yelp
Worst pizza ever. No tomato sauce? Are you kidding me? It's cheese and bread and lots of sodium. I'm not sure what clientele they are trying to please but not even kids like it at all. Waste of $35 for a whole pizza.
google avatar

Samantha T.

Yelp
Okay anyone not giving this five stars is no fun. THIS IS FUN PIZZA!!! Kinda pricey for the price, but the pizza is good an pretty unique to the area. Great taste, thicker slice but super airy, so it doesn't make it all that heavy. THIS PIZZA IS HAPPY AND FUN, TRY IT!

Yelp
As much as I'd like to give Venice Way pizza which is a nice small business a better review at the present time from my experience it's only three stars. For me it's seriously lacked moisture and tasted like a dry piece of bread with some pepperoni on it. I think this place has a lot of potential and can kick but if they got their act together and just put together a little bit better product. One thing for sure it needs more sauce and moisture if I'm ever going to come back here again. I wish this fairly new business the best of luck and I hope they succeed. At $4.50 a square it seems par for the area but it simply needs some Update Well I went back to Venice way pizza again! This time the pizza was much fresher and obviously have not been sitting for hours before the receipt is in your oven. The amount and pepperoni and the freshness with Superior. It's definitely a solid four-star place if you get a fresh slice. Make sure you check out the pizza before you leave. I also asked them to add a little bit of sauce which they gladly did.

Yelp
I am blown away by the quality and taste of the pizza here. I got a pepperoni pizza and another pepperoni pizza with goat cheese and broccoli (had to mix it up a bit). Both pizzas were delicious. Not too greasy and it had the perfect balance of cheese and toppings. And now the crust...this crust is the best I ever had. Thick and crunchy and chewy at the same time. Also, this pizza makes great leftovers. Add an egg to it and voila breakfast (I attached a pic). Seriously, check out this pizza shop next time you get a craving. You won't be disappointed.

Yelp
I'm a New Yorker born and raised, so I'm very picky. That being said, I'm open to trying anything at least once. Venice way doesn't propose to be New York pizza, which is good. I'm really surprised how much I like it. It's got a really crunchy bottom it's light and airy and yummy and it's pizza but not a slice, a slab. It's pizza made the Venice way, different delicious artistic and yummy. And a good value.I'll be back.
google avatar

Jolene L.

Yelp
The service was great. But the pizza was inedible. Too much salty cheese, a minuscule amount of sauce, and the dough was almost raw. Very disappointing.
google avatar

Stormy J.

Yelp
This place is a hidden gem in Venice. I take all of my friends visiting LA to this spot and they've all said that this is the best pizza they've had. I'm really happy that I came across this place.
google avatar

Jessica R.

Yelp
Yummm thick chewy square chunks of pizza with good cheese...order the plain cheese to get the best experience trust me the little eating area is funny LoL def b back good coldWeather food
google avatar

Yelp
THIS PLACE IS SO FREAKING GOOD. Fresh bite , nice crusty bread not too much sauce and just the perfect amount of pepperoni. Here's. Pro tip heat up the pizza in the broiler, turn oven to broil and pop the pan in there. Throw the pizza on after and wahhhlahhh amazing VENICE WAY FREAKING PIZZA (mouth watering emoji inserted here).
google avatar

Mohit K.

Yelp
Unassuming takeout window at Hotel Erwin, but once you take a bite you know this isn't any pizza.. all the hype is worth it. I usually gobble up pizza but two slices fill me up. A pan + salad make for an ideal family meal. The specials are cool, but the pepperoni is my favorite.
google avatar

Anastasia D.

Yelp
I've been searching for good pizza since I moved from the east coast. Venice pizza did not disappoint! The little pepperoni . If you're searching for good pizza this is the place!
google avatar

Yelp
Show me the way to Venice Way Pizza! Being a local, I know where to go for a great slice. There is a lot to be said for this pizza. First off, the crust is unique and ever so tasty! It's bubbly, light and airy, yet has a crispy crust done just right. The sauce is delicious - not too sweet, but well balanced with robust flavor. I'm drooling now as I think of it. Combined all together to create a sensational pizza pie unique in and of itself. Now, go make your way to Venice Way Pizza!
google avatar

Kate W.

Yelp
OMG - if you haven't tried this pizza, don't walk, run! It's a welcome change from the predominant thin crusts you find most everywhere. The base is more like focaccia bread - I grew up in the east coast and this is closer to what we used to call a Sicilian slice. I tried the veggie which was amazing but they have cheese and pepperoni and a style called The Venice Way. You can walk right up to the window at the Hotel Erwin and place your order to go. They offer both slices and full pies!
google avatar

K B.

Yelp
What the.....what $5.00 a slice. Overnight they jacked up the prices by a dollar. As a local this sucks, I ate lunch here almost every day of the week. Foods good but price is wacked. Old reviews show they jacked up prices before then adjusted then to their neighborhood, according to the owners responce to reviews I read. I hope this happens soon, sucks to walk past here every day now and not grab 2 slices.
google avatar

Nicholaus G.

Yelp
Really solid Detroit style. Hope they can hang in there and maintain the quality and not raise prices. Even had a good soup there the other day!
google avatar

Nipps B.

Yelp
sooooooo delish!!! I don't remeber the last time I had a square pizza but I will surely be back. So good. The woman who made it was super nice. She made sure I had cutlery, parm cheese, chili flakes and napkins. Just fantastic pizza. I cant wait to take a pizza home to my family. They will absolutley freak! If you are in Venice visiting or staying at the cool Hotel Erwin, please do yourself a favor and get Venice Way Pizza. You will not be sorry!
google avatar

Carole S.

Yelp
I love the location, the retro vibe, the inspired chef and the convenience. The pizza is terrific. Great flavor combinations. It took me a few minutes to eat my slice, which was fun, and afterwards I felt very satisfied! Nice beach experience.
google avatar

Katie C.

Yelp
Pizza had burnt cheese and was very dry (not enough sauce). We called in an order for a full sheet expecting it would be freshly made. Instead it was "ready in 10"... it tasted like it was sitting under heat lamps all day. If you like bread with dry cheese and no sauce, this is your kind of pizza. Dough was also too chewy. Parking is also difficult
google avatar

bryan c.

Yelp
I was salivating about trying their pizza. Boy was that a letdown. I ordered a slice of veggie and a slice of cheese. The problem is the crust. It's heavy, not light and fluffy like they describe it, because it's really oily. I was disappointed. :(
google avatar

Mary C.

Yelp
The pizza is bomb - I've had several times and crave it - but the management is terrible! They keep odd hours and will not be open randomly. Good luck trying to call to place an order, no one picks up. Walking up to order at the window, the place might be shut down completely or just a sign that says they'll be back later. For a pizza place by the beach at a popular hotel, this place should be cranking but it's managed poorly. Sad.
google avatar

Krystal Z.

Yelp
Amazing pepperoni pizza! So flavorful with a unique thick, chewy crust. We ordered a bunch of slices through Postmates and really fell in love with this place. All the slices were good, but pepperoni was our fave. The chopped salad was also way better than the usual you'd get from a pizza place. This is weird to write, but even the side of ranch dressing was amazing. Do they make their own ranch? I don't know, but it was really tasty.
google avatar

lisa k.

Yelp
10/10. The woman working there was super sweet! We called it in and then drove over. Was very easy to just pull into valet to grab food. The focaccia is insanely good. Crispy, doughy, salty, herby. The pizzas are deceptively large and soooo delicious. A pizza has 9 pieces. I was starving and couldn't even finish 2 slices. Will definitely be back soon!

Tom D.

Yelp
Saw the Yelp reviews and thought we needed to try it. This pizza is pre-made and they reheat it. Pizza came out over cooked and it was terrible. I am enclosing a picture. We ordered a cheese slice and then a pepperoni pie with drinks. The total came to $49 for it. Very disappointed in this place. Would never recommend this place.

Yelp
I was excited to have a new pizza establishment but became skeptical when i notice their pizza was quite expensive. Despite my skepticism i gave it a try but unfortunately it's not worth it 6.95 a slice is outrageous I tried it not worth it. Overpriced go to Costco the quality is on par and for a little extra you get a whole pie. Sorry Venice Way!!!
google avatar

Andy R.

Yelp
As a local who lives directly across the street (Windward Village Apartments) I was soooo excited for a pizza spot across the street. Then I walked over and saw the prices. $6.95 for a slice of pepperoni. In what world is this acceptable? I won't support this place until they lower their prices. After talking with numerous other residents in my building they feel the same way. Lower your prices and I'll happily support your business. But I won't support a $7 slice of pepperoni.
google avatar

Paul S.

Yelp
Oh Venice way Ohhhh Venice way, how I wish I was eating your pizza today!!! From the day it opened till now I have enjoyed the Pizza here tremendously... The flavors and crust and amazing!!! I honestly eat here 2 times a week.

Pedro V.

Yelp
A hidden little tiny window but the pizza packs a tasty punch! My favorite is the pepperoni of course. Juicy and greasy and the crust is by far the best part! And I'm not a crust person at all. Have eaten here a handful of times and is in the heart of Venice. East to grab a slice or a whole pie and enjoy it on the beach.
google avatar

Ethan R.

Yelp
i love how LA has turned into a square pizza city. venice way pizza serves some of the best cheese pizza at fantastic prices. the pizza is fluffy AF. the cheese frecco crust is ridiculously crispy and tangy. the full pie pizza is HUGE so it's a great value. overall this pizza slays.
google avatar

Ryan M.

Yelp
Such a great addition to the Venice area! I feel as if there are no good places for pizza in this neighborhood. I was so happy to see this gem open up! The pizza crust is AMAZING and I'm a big fan of the sauce. Definitely a good spot to grab a lunch bite or after the bars. Will be going back.
google avatar

Nathan G.

Yelp
Paid $7 for a mediocre slice of pepperoni and more for a drink this place is a joke!!
google avatar

Lorena F.

Yelp
We stayed at Hotel Erwin and got pizza from Venice Way Pizza as it's connected to the hotel right as you check in and it was SO good! I got the veggie and it was really good and hearty. Perfect if you've had some drinks or been out all day in the sun and need a good meal.
google avatar

Galit P.

Yelp
AMAZING PIZZA!! reminds me of bleeker street pizza in nyc! So happy to have discovered this gem.
google avatar

Steven H.

Yelp
Finally, a good slice of pizza by the beach. I can totally look forward to surfing Venice and having a great tasting pizza slice. Fluufy pizza crust with a crispy bottom is tge way to go.
google avatar

Marta H.

Yelp
Great pizza place, quick, easy. Crispy crust and toppings and soft and doughy in the middle. Really hit the spot!
google avatar

Tony B.

Yelp
I'm always in Venice and I always eat pizza...found this place on Google just simply by typing Detroit style pizza on goggle. I had the pepperoni and veggie. Both were good I can say that the veggie was packed with flavor I liked that one more than the pep but the pepperoni pizza was great I like a little more sauce but I'm sure I can ask for more if not I'm fine . I will by a whole box next time. Didn't get pics cause I just kept eating after first bite lol

Garyq M.

Yelp
We were staying at the Erwin prior to our flight the next morning out of LAX. Saw this pizza place right next to the hotel entrance and picked up a couple slices for dinner. It was horrible! Without question the worst pizza I have ever had. It was dry, burnt and clearly not freshly made. Avoid this place.
google avatar

Jhon N.

Yelp
Great pizza. Not trying to be anything but original. Love the square shape and the quality ingredients. Will be returning

Tami H.

Yelp
The best pizza I have ever had in Los Angeles! It's crispy on the bottom and the perfect chewy dough, flavor and yummy toppings! I am obsessed!! It's so hardy and not greasy! BRAVO Hotel Erwin for upping the pizza game in LA! Total gem! I want more Venice Way Pizza as I am typing this review!
google avatar

Drew L.

Yelp
Just what we've needed in the heart of Venice Beach. LA's pizza scene is heating up but I love being able to walk up to the window around the corner from the beach and get something delicious. The dough is fire, uniquely different from what everyone else is doing. I love Neapolitan pizza but it's nice to switch it up and I couldn't be happier.
google avatar

eric v.

Yelp
Finally got to stop by and get a slice of pizza! Everything about the pizza was great the dough was on point! Great spot to go to for pizza in Venice

Francisco C.

Yelp
Very delicious pizza. You must try the pepperoni slab. Must grab a slab and walk through the boardwalk.
google avatar

Scott M.

Yelp
Got the salami, jalapeño, red onion pie. It was great. Loved it. $25 for 9 great slices Definitely using this spot in my to-go rotation.
google avatar

J A.

Yelp
Great pizza! The crust is so amazing I can't get enough. They have deals for lunch and there's nothing better than a slab with an ice cold drink when the weather is warm. So happy they're doing takeout right now, new local fav!
google avatar

STEW E.

Yelp
ZERO STARS!! $100 pizza...this is a ridiculous addition to rip off a lovely Venice Community. Horrible concept for locals to actually show up. The pizza is a dry crusted lump of bread with an 1/8oz of rubbery cheese and lightly moistened by some gross red stain of a sauce. Good idea for ripping off the hipsters!! keep up the great scam
