My wife and I just returned from two weeks in Portugal and we spent two nights a this stunning property and Quinta. The property itself is simply stunning, from the vineyards, to the buildings, to the views of the Duoro Valley. The views truly are breathtaking.
We had a Double Room in Casa do Laranjal. This renovated building had 5-6 rooms in it, all doubles and we had the end room. Located perfectly for access to the restaurant. All of the buildings require a short walk to the breathtaking pool, this is no exception. It was close to the reception and wine tasting room.
The restaurant was great. We generally travel in to the local town for dinners, but due to the location up a mountain and no lights for the road, I wasn't comfortable driving to Pinhao for dinner so we ate all of our meals there, breakfast and dinner. We spent the days visiting other vineyards and would find lunch along the way. Breakfast is a la carte and you can order anything you'd like, no limitations. Dinner had a nice variety with plenty of great wines to choose from (from their vineyard and varietals).
The pool was breathtaking, heated by the sun, but even in October I made it in. Take a bottle of wine with you and enjoy the views.
Staff were friendly and accommodating with any request.
Our only negative thing to say, was that we were very disappointed with the wine tasting we booked. We had it with 4 others (two couples). It felt very basic, nothing exciting. What struck us as odd was that the wines tasted were not even Portuguese varietals. As people traveling the wine region who did 9 tastings during our trip, this was the worst. I do not want to try a varietal of Syrah, even if grown on the property. I would suggest reconsidering that option, especially after we tried others in the restaurant that were from the property and way better.
Overall this is a fantastic, breathtaking hotel. Due to it's location , you may spend more time there relaxing then driving in to the town. We did drive in during the day and took a boat cruise with a company called Deltatur (recommended by the hotel), I will write a review on that, but it was a disappointing cruise.
The staff did a great job communicating with me pre-trip when I was looking for recommendations.
