Carla Hall Will Be Cooking at JuneBaby Next Week | Eater Seattle

"After 30 years on 24th Avenue, longtime coffee shop Java Bean will rebrand as Venture Coffee Co.; it will close from February 25 to March 3 for renovations and reopen with a refreshed look while continuing to serve the same coffee and breakfast bagels." - Tim Forster

Loved this coffee shop with modern decor and Seattle’s rustic touch. Good customer service and amazing coffee ☕️ + goodies. Food and Coffee: Think of all the yummy flavors and choices in coffee and pastries - you’ll be delighted to find it here. Scones, croissants, freshly made flavored breads and all the goodies. Loved kobenhavn latte, banana flavored latte, almond croissant and vanilla banana marble cake. Spinach feta croissant was okay.. The flavors used are housemade and all ingredients are sourced locally. But they said kitchen is closed to the oven before more than an hour before their closing time so no warming up pastries if you’re in the last hour and a half or so time period. Ambience: Indoor and outdoor seating with beautiful decorations creates a lovely ambience to sip and enjoy. There are lots of people working on laptops and folks catching up. It can be tad bit noisy due to the crowd and staff announcing orders ready to pickup at the counter. Overall this is a good cafe serving Seattle area for almost 3 decades!

Sometimes it feels too crowded in here but that's the price you pay for hanging out in a popular place. The logistics: on 24th across the street from the QFC there is limited street parking that you have to pay for. Four dollars an hour. Ideally come with computer charged because only a couple places where you can sit to charge phone or computer. They close at four so be ready to head out. I really love the density of the orange almond cake -- it reminds me of an olive oil cake but even more moist… However it's a little disappointing/lacks depth of flavor. The savory danishes have been wonderful, each one I've had whether it's the tomato feta or rolled with savory herbs or spinach and cheese. They have some interesting kombucha in cans, worth trying, like the Mango Habanero. And I enjoy both their hot and iced coffees. Servers are friendly and regularly upkeep the café, which makes makes it feel like a cared-for space.

Google
Good coffee shop. Great customer service and the coffee itself is delicious. I got a spiced plum latte and unfortunately didn’t taste plum at all, but it was still good. Pear crème brûlée is fantastic, I could eat 3 of those.

Google
I’ve been looking for a pour over for a couple of days and finally came across Venture Coffee Co, and it was just what I needed. They had a few different options for the pour over and I ended up going with the strawberry infused one. It legitimately smelled and tasted like it was infused with strawberries, it was delicious. They have tons of options to buy coffee, and I ended up getting a bag. The atmosphere is cool with plenty of seating and people moving in and out constantly. There looked to be really good baked goods as well.

Google
We were in Ballard looking for parking (don’t ask) ended up near this place. Decided to grab a coffee, until… we saw the baking case! I had a Seattle sun (I think). It was croissant pastry, round, with a baked egg ham and cheese. It was out of this world good. The eggs were fluffy. I don’t know how they did it. My spouse had an almond croissant. Best croissant used to be in West Seattle, not any more. Venture now is her fave. Go for the coffee, stay for the food!

Google
These pastries were amazing! We split them with 5 people (cut them into 4’s) and none were left. So, so good! Will definitely be back.

Google
Finally, some drip coffee with depth. I’m visiting Seattle and most coffee shops I’ve been to here serve exceedingly dark, over roasted coffee. This place serves complex, nuanced, excellently brewed coffee. I will be back.

Google
Chill vibes with dark brown woody decor and plants spotted throughout. Friendly staff. The front windows open up, which I can imagine would be great during summer. Had the matcha latte, which was well made and tasty.

Yelp
Great vibe, good coffee and breakfast sandwich, and a fair amount of seating. I'm also a fan of a lot of windows and garage doors that allow you to see outside the shop. Only knock on the place is that it's on the pricier end of coffee shops. Worth checking out for sure if you're in the Ballard area.
google avatar

Sara H.

Yelp
Coffee and espresso drinks are mid- nothing to write home about. Pastries selection is abundant, basic, but consistent- also nothing to write home about about. The reason why I wouldn't reccomend this place is $15-$20 for a drink and pastries isn't worth the dirty looks and attitude from the guy who's always be behind the counter. This is not a warm and welcoming experience like you expect in a neighborhood coffeehouse.
google avatar

Grace M.

Yelp
We had a delicious pastries from venture including a cronut and it really hit the spot for an early breakfast. I cannot speak to the drinks but the baked good were top notch!
google avatar

Connie M.

Yelp
I had a København latte and ham and cheese croissant. Great atmosphere, if you can snag a high table there's outlets in the wall. The ham and cheese croissant was bomb dot com! The latte was ok, I've had better. Overall nice place to catch up on work and chill out

Yelp
I just have to come right out and say, holy hell, this coffee was bangin'. Like, worth-drinking-every-day-of-our-vacation-bangin'. If you know me, or you at least see my photos in your feed, you know that I go out to eat and drink. Like, a lot. For me, it's like filling a never-ending void up with as many new experiences as possible. So obviously, with only so many hours in a day and only so many calories to be consumed, my thought process is to limit the amount of times you find yourself in a situation you've already been in before, good or bad. If not always a place you've never been, then at least an item you've never tried. Enter Venture. In planning this trip, despite Venture being literally like two blocks away from where we were staying, it somehow flew under my radar. We had just picked up our bagels nearby and my partner asked if we could get coffee from somewhere else, and I did a quick Yelp search to see if there was a coffee shop in walking distance. When I saw Venture, I was like, huh, guess there is, guess we could go here?? When we stepped inside, I was enthused to see their menu options being as weirdo yummy as they are: rosemary infused syrup? Peach latte? Cardamom rolls and spanakopitas? Uh, hell yeah. We ordered, took a seat on their very comfy couch, and literally within seconds our drinks were already done. We decided to drink them there because the ambiance was so cozy, even with all the windows and doors open and the draft blowing in. And after we tried the first sips of our coffees, my partner and I gazed into each other's eyes, brimming with love. Not love for each other--no--but love for our drinks. We returned on the other two days of our trip, and have reminisced about "probably the best coffee in Ballard" many times since.

Yelp
I liked the unique options they had but I loved how flexible they were in letting me customize my drink even more! I can't have coffee so I was able to get the elderflower one in a matcha with oat milk instead. I appreciated the baristas friendliness and willingness to do that. The other thing I loved is that they're dog friendly. We sat outside enjoying the sun and the vibes here were so lovely that I will definitely be back. Great spot for peaceful reading or working or just soaking up some nice weather with your pup.

Yelp
Not sure why it has taken me this long to check out this charming cafe in Ballard but I am very sad I didn't figure it out sooner. I love their scandi themed baked goods, drinks, and general atmosphere. I tried the københavn latte which was sweeter than I usually like a flavored latte but the cardamom flavor was perfectly strong I would get it again. I'll be back very soon to do a fika as their sweet baked goods looked incredible. I found out this is the same baked goods as freya and what is served at Hagen which totally jives with the scandi vibes from the other two cafes. Can't wait to be back and try out all their pastries and seasonal drinks!
google avatar

Torrie N.

Yelp
A great neighborhood coffee shop! Love that they have a bunch of specialty and seasonal drinks vs. just a vanilla latte, for example. I enjoy the rosemary brown sugar latte (half sweet) and a number of their seasonal drinks! They also have a pretty big selection of pastries (have tried a few and have enjoyed!). The space itself is smaller and seats do fill up pretty quickly. My only minor complaint is that the staff could be a bit friendlier (they're not rude, but in my experience they don't go out of their way to smile or greet customers -- usually I'm the one saying hi first and asking how they are doing). Also, the space does get crowded and a little hectic at peak times when trying to wait for your drink (and it's basically blocking the walkway, etc.). Overall a great place and glad they are in the neighborhood.
google avatar

Yelp
This is the best coffee I've had in Ballard so far! If you love smooth coffee, this is the place to go. However, I've found the mocha to be slightly inconsistent--some days it's not as strong or chocolatey as others. One small issue is the lack of a good spot to stand while waiting for your coffee. I always feel like I'm too close to the people sitting down. That said, I've never had to wait long for my drink. I haven't tried the food yet, but they have quite a few options. Unfortunately, the seating area is a bit too loud and busy for my liking.

Yelp
Delicious coffee shop in Ballard. Tried this place for the first time today and was really impressed by the quality of the coffee. I had the Vienna latte and had no complaints. It was so smooth and flavorful, and had just enough cinnamon. The staff was friendly and our coffees came out quickly. The coffee shop itself is very cozy with quite a bit of seating and decorated with many plants. We were here on a Saturday morning (~11am) and while the shop was somewhat busy, there were still open seats. We only ordered coffees, but the baked goods on display looked delicious. Would definitely stop by this place again if I were in Ballard.

Yelp
Loved this cute cafe/coffee shop in Ballard! We went on a Sunday during farmers market time and it was busy, but we were still able to get a spot quickly. Coffee, pastries, and sandwich were all fantastic!

Yelp
I live nearby and it's a nice to have a coffee shop like Venture when I want a little change for breakfast. Both their coffee and pastries are good - staff here don't recommend heating up the pastries with custard in it but they actually taste pretty good warmed up too. There are lots of seats so you can usually find a spot to sit even during busy hours. Staff is usually nice but I've encountered some staff who are kind of standoffish/snobby a few times. Idk, maybe they were moody because it was in the morning. I haven't had bad experiences recently so I'm hoping to keep it that way.

Yelp
I always seek out coffee shops wherever I go and Venture did not disappoint. Located within the Ballard neighborhood is a cozy shop , a great place to relax or work while enjoying a coffee. I tried a Brown Sugar and Rosemary Latte. It was excellent! The brown sugar added just the right amount of sweetness. The coffee was smooth and not bitter. I highly recommend.
google avatar

Tori Z.

Yelp
Favorite coffee shop in Ballard! It's welcoming but not presumptuous, and has a great selection of pastries in addition to drinks. My personal favorite is their Seattle Fog tea latte.
google avatar

Marcus S.

Yelp
Neighborhood coffee shop where the coffee is good, and the staff have always been friendly. It's a nice shop that delivers the coffee perk up I need. Venture has been in the neighborhood for a few years now and it's very welcome. Should you choose to stay, it's got a nice calm coffee shop vibe and is pretty quiet save for people giving and taking orders and the little ambient coffee shop noises. Some light conversation, but no music which is a decent change. A nice place to hang out or get some work done. There is some outside seating as well. I've had all my favorites here - Standard drip, Latte's, Mocha's and even a slice of banana bread. All have consistently been good with each visit. So, I'm glad I can reliably come here, along with it being convenient and count on it being a good visit with good coffee. There are many coffee shops around, but Venture seems up to the task staying on their game.

Yelp
I've been here a few times for coffee and a pastry now and have to say it is really good. I may be biased as I live close by, but the coffee is always good and I even had a matcha latte once that was very well done. Compared to other places in the area the quality here is great. The staff are very friendly as well! They have a lot of options to choose from, even specialty lattes that rotate regularly and have seasonal flavors. They make their own syrups from scratch so they don't taste artificial but very good. The pastries are also great! I have tried the asparagus tart and the chocolate chip cookie. So glad to have this spot in the neighborhood!

Peter T.

Yelp
Service was friendly. Coffee was hot! Conversation snappy! Local café likes mixing mingle and talk.

Samantha L.

Yelp
Very rude staff, ordered 3 drinks from smallest to large, and was served 3 drinks all in the smallest size. I asked if they were the correct sizes and the barista told me that I ordered them all in 12oz. She was very rude and seemingly agitated, she did not offer to remake them, and looking at my receipt she charged me for the larger sizes. Will be filing a chargeback with my bank. The drinks were not very good and we didn't end up finishing them even in the smallest size. Would not return or recommend. Does not seem to be POC friendly.

Yelp
My Americano was so weak it tasted like water. Not sure what the problem was or if this is something that happens regularly.

Yelp
I'm usually breezing through this southern stretch of 24th Ave NW since the original owners of nearby Cafe Besalu sold and moved to Spain. Long time cafe neighbor Java Bean rebranded their site after nearly three decades to become Venture Coffee in 2019. Yeah totally late to the party, showing up to check it out two years later. Fellow Yelper/IGer Wendy K's post in late May 2021 convinced me to bookmark it. Updated, variety of seating configurations, lush plants, decent selection of pastries. And yes, with my stops in well established Venture Coffee were positive during pandemic times, whether solo or with others. Pleasant, upbeat baristas. I also recall a really melty chocolate chunk cookie. It was just nice to enjoy well crafted beverages with a nice breeze during some of our past toasty summer of 2021 months. The Ballard neighborhood sure has a large concentration of cafes to get one's java or tea fix! Venture Coffee does a pretty decent job.
google avatar

Yelp
Stopped for coffee before going to the Ballard Farmers Market. BF had drip coffee and I had a Matcha latte with oat milk. Wasn't really impressed with the coffee and latte. Matcha latte was lukewarm and seemed like there was not a lot of matcha in it.
google avatar

April F.

Yelp
Came to this busy spot for coffee. Line out the door and the pastry case is filled with Danish on steroids! Everything came in the size big and bigger! Ordered an Americano and unfortunately the coffee was bitter and sour. Majorly disappointed. If I had time to ask for a redo I would've.
google avatar

Wendy K.

Yelp
Not sure why it took me so long to visit this coffee shop it's not too far from me. I usually don't drink coffee around my own neighborhood pre covid I usually frequented coffee spots closer to work in the ID or Pioneer Square. Was going to QFC to pick up a few things and decided to stop by. There are six tables on the north side outside and chairs in front. The door in front and one towards the back are left open. You wait outside till waved in to order to control the number of people inside. Decor is quite different from Java Bean. More modern, love all the plants and raw edge shelves. I had an almond milk latte and mushroom béchamel pastry. Great latte smooth no exciting latte art which I've learned not to expect during covid especially if you're getting it to go. Lots of people were ordering the breakfast buns which looked tasty. Would definitely visit if again when I'm near by.
google avatar

J W.

Yelp
Great coffee, love the pastries. Now the expected tip of 20-25% I think these business are getting a little out of hand, nope.

Sami R.

Yelp
Reviews did not disappoint!!! We have been trying out new coffee spots around the area, this one is by far the best. Vienna Latte was perfectly sweet and creamy! Also love the interior & kind staff!! 10/10 experience!
google avatar

Alana K.

Yelp
Been here a handful of times now, and almost every time has been excellent. The off-time was still good. They make delicious coffees as well as matcha lattes that are not too sweet. They offer an assortment of pastries which usually includes a vegan option, and they also have a menu with hot bites like egg & cheese sammies. I've never had bad service. They appear dog friendly. They get bonkers busy on the weekend but the line moves quickly. I like to sit in the big front window and people watch. Good vibes here.
google avatar

Bill P.

Yelp
Perfect coffee shop in the neighborhood. The coffee is great and I even tried their Seattle Fog drink which is good if you're a fan of fog drinks. All of their pastries look fantastic. I got myself a cardamon knot which was absolutely delicious. The workers are friendly and welcoming, very pleasant people. The inside is more calm and relaxed compared to the bustle of other coffee shops I've been to in Seattle. There's a good amount of people working, and I'd agree it's a great place to get some work done. The music isn't loud, the interior is nice and gives a plant-heavy vibe, and overall it's a very chill place. I'd love to come here again with my laptop, grab a good cup of coffee and a pastry, and get my work done. Great coffee shop.
google avatar

Frances L.

Yelp
Came here for a cup of coffee while touring Seattle. I ordered a Seattle Fog which is less striking than London Fog. Maybe that's how it's supposed to be. But the BEST drink you should try is their Chai Tea Latte. If you like Chai, this is a proper spiced chai which leaves a "Wow" in your mouth. They have the chai syrup sale separately. Definitely will go back for that.
google avatar

Carolina R.

Yelp
Went to venture on a Friday morning around 9:30am to do work and really enjoyed the coffee, ambiance and pastry. I got an iced coffee and chocolate chip banana loaf bread, both so good! They had a lot of seating room which was great to do work. The staff was so nice and really enjoyed working and enjoying my coffee. Would definitely come back!
google avatar

Luba K.

Yelp
Venture Coffee is a place I often visit when in Ballard. We get our standard oat milk lattes and their delicious Egg, Cheese, & Bacon Bun. These pics aren't pretty, but let me tell you the flavors are so good, you'll be happy I posted this horrible picture. Bacon, egg, havarti cheese, arugula, and (the most delicious) garlic aioli. Pro tip: add hot sauce to the sandwich. Just trust me - go and enjoy!
google avatar

Steven Z.

Yelp
I wish I lived closer to this shop! They have great house syrups. My sister and I got the hot brown sugar + rosemary latte and the Kobenhavn latte (less sweet). The flavors are pretty well balanced in the 8oz cup. My qualm with some other coffee shops' syrups is that they're are too artificial tasting. Not the case with Venture's. Their interior is a little crowded, but thoughtful and put together. They have a nice leather couch lounge area in the back and plants decorating the wall shelves. I'll definitely be back to try more of their drinks.
google avatar

Allison B.

Yelp
Can't say enough about venture. We stayed with friends in Ballard and they recommended this. We came here 3 times during our stay! We loved it. The Vienna latte is a fan favorite. We absolutely loved their coffee. So much better than the place down the street - by a lot. I hope to return someday. Thank you!!
google avatar

Barbara P.

Yelp
I loved Venture coffee. My wife and I thought it was the best coffee shop we visited while in Seattle. I ordered the Café Vienna and she got a pour over. The café Vienna was delicious. The infusion of the cinnamon really put it over the top. I could have had several. The shop itself is cute and located in Ballard where we were staying. There are a few tables inside and outside to sit and enjoy your drink if you choose.
google avatar

Sean M.

Yelp
Staff was lovely, the breakfast food was fresh and delicious, and.... God damn. They have this mole mocha. It's unlike anything I've ever tasted. It's incredible! Anyone who enjoys various espresso drinks should have this as a required tasting. I wish I could find that in NYC somewhere because damn I'm going to miss that mocha

Nellie B.

Yelp
"I'd like an 8 oz iced latte please" "Great! So you know, our smallest iced cup is 12 oz, so it'll only be filled up to here" Amazing! Wow! You'd think literally every barista and cafe would handle an 8 oz iced drink like that, but no one does. Thank you Venture (and the unnamed wonderful baristas) for thinking, adapting, and making a delicious latte.
google avatar

Conner M.

Yelp
Coffee is great! Come here specifically to get their beans, which never disappoint. What does disappoint is the customer service. I've been here 20+ times in the past couple of years and have received subpar service every single time. The staff seemingly provides good customer service every 10 or so people, leaving you wondering why that specific person was asked how their day was and why you couldn't even get a smile from them. It would be different if it was just one time or one staff member, but it's all of them. They will have long discussions with each other and completely disregard the customer. When I go to thank them after picking up my coffee, I rarely even get acknowledged. A simple "You're welcome!" or "Thanks for coming in, have a great day!" would go a looooong way for these folks.
google avatar

Jenna B.

Yelp
Cute and small, with some seating inside and out, this is a nice neighborhood coffee shop to enjoy a beverage, maybe sit with a book or your computer to do a little work. Vienna latte is a standout, and the vanilla latte is not too sweet - just the way I prefer.
google avatar

Anaher B.

Yelp
The coffee is usually pretty great but unfortunately today I received two haphazardly put together coffees - disappointment for the amount I pay for the coffee and on top of that I tipped well so that was annoying. Usually the baristas are amazing and thoughtful. hoping for a better cup of coffees next time.
google avatar

Johnny W.

Yelp
Summary: Solid coffee shop. Details: * Nothing spectacular, but solid coffee for easy drinking * Syrups made in-house

Sarah C.

Yelp
Always a great vibe. The staff are super quick with getting orders out and it tastes delicious. Highly recommend, although I wish some of the savory food wasn't so expensive. Try the Vienna Latte and the pastries, though!
google avatar

Sweets E.

Yelp
The baristas at Venture are unbelievably nice. If you walk in, they gonna give you a damn compliment, regardless of how nice or disheveled you look. They gonna tell you your dog is cute regardless of how sweet or pesky he is. And they're gonna serve you an excellent chai with a delicious pastry (get the Kouign Amann or the cheesy tomato danish-- we forgot what it's called but it's good). If we could give them 6 stars, I would. Thanks, y'all!
google avatar

Katy H.

Yelp
A lovely cafe that makes you happy to be in Ballard. COFFEE AND TEA AND BAKED GOODS, OH MY! I was impressed by the selection of coffee, baked goods, and heartier breakfast options. My jasmine tea was nice and I was so grateful they could pour it into my reusable cup (so many places around Ballard will not do this). It would have been nice to see more tea options though. My friend enjoyed her vanilla latte greatly. The cardamom roll was tasty though I always feel these things could go even heavier on the cardamom. THE ATMOSPHERE IS ONE YOU WON'T WANT TO LEAVE. I met my friend here and was happy to see there were plenty of seats. It was a bit crowded on a rainy Sunday around 10 AM. It seems like others enjoy this place as well. The interior is lovely and there are so many plants and mountain themed wall art around the cafe that you know you're in Seattle. I would happily return and bring others.
google avatar

James F.

Yelp
What great local coffee experience! The barista was so friendly, and so helpful in addition to being spot on coffee making wise. The pastries were amazing and the coffee was simply great! This should be a definite must try destination!

Cameron J.

Yelp
Coffee was good with quality latte art, food was good as well with a lot of variety. Inside outside vibes with a nice breeze
google avatar

Yelp
We are staying at an airbnb in Seattle, and my favorite nearby discovery is Venture Coffee! OH MY GOSH!! Not only do they have a fantastic cup of joe, the brown sugar & rosemary latte is absolutely out of this world beyond phenomenal and I urge you to run (not walk!) to grab a slice of the orange almond cake!! The guy behind the counter is the nicest dude ever, and seems to always be there with a smile on (3 days in a row now!). Seattle freeze my ass!!!! I've literally met the nicest people in Seattle! Anyways, Venture Coffee reigns supreme, it's been the best find...and I'm on a mission to try all the coffee here I can :)
google avatar

Alisa F.

Yelp
I stopped by Venture Coffee the other day while walking around the Ballard Sunday market. This spot looked cute and I was looking for something hot to warm up a bit. I ended up ordering the Cafe Vienna - a cinnamon infused vanilla latte and I subbed oat milk. The small drink came out to $7, so definitely on the pricey side of coffee. The drink had good flavor but it was a little too sweet for me. I'd never been here before so I didn't know what to expect. I didn't try any pastries, but they all looked really good. I'm not sure I would go out of my way to come here again, but if you're in the downtown Ballard area and are looking for something new to try or a place to get some work done, this is a nice spot.

Yelp
They make all their syrups in house!!! Caramel Bananas Foster is one and lots of others! Very pleasant and competent baristas. Can't wait to come back!

Franziska D.

Yelp
Yum! Great short walk to this gem for tasty treats and great coffee. Staff is friendly and atmosphere is warm and hospitable. Will return!
