Chung Chun Rice Dog Opens Its First Seattle Location - Eater Seattle

"All-day breakfast spot Vera’s closed in December and has reopened as Vera’s Pizza and Bar, a 21-and-over spot serving slices and whole pizzas until 1 a.m. There are a few quirky topping options like bacon cheeseburger and chipotle taco, plus six local beers on tap. There are promises of Jello shots and boilermakers in the future, too." - Megan Hill

The DJ at the place was completely disrespectfully to my friend when he requested a song for his ill mom. The DJ made fun of him and said vulgar things like he "knew his mom" in a suggestive way. He then proceeded to get us kicked out and when we tried to explain the situation to the bartenders they completely dismissed us and refused to hear the situation. The DJ would only queue songs if he was tipped first and then ruined my friends birthday by being an absolutely rude human and making fun of his sick mom. Would never go back. Absolutely ridiculous. The lack of care that this company has for the wellbeing of its patrons and making sure that they are treated well is ridiculous. I would avoid at all costs if you are expecting any respect or empathy from any of the employees.

Google
Vera's Pizza 🍕😋 is such a cool spot in Ballard. They have pinball machines, skee-ball, great drinks 🥃🍷🍻 and of course one of the best pizza slices in town!! They also offer karaoke on Wednesday nights from 9pm to Midnight with your fave host STATION.

Liz Y.

Google
Stumbled upon this place and had a slice of pizza. It was surprisingly very good! Flavor was great and texture of dough was soft yet crispy. It was entertaining watching people sing karaoke as well. I’d totally come back for pizza. They had cheese pizza but was sold out of pepperoni (but how..you’re a pizza shop…..)

Came here for the first time and one of the staff was very rude to me. As my group was leaving, we didn’t know where to bus the empty glass and can as there wasn’t a clear bus bin, so I took a half-empty can and an empty glass to the bar. Bartender smiled at me, so I assumed this was the right way to bus. As we walked out, a man by the dj booth called out “you can take that over there.” I asked for clarification twice, but he just repeated himself until I finally put together that he wanted me to bring the drinks somewhere else. I brought them over to the dj booth where I then saw a tray, and assumed that’s where they went. He watched me in silence, offering no further instruction, and then another patron helped put the can in the trash. I thought that took care of things, so turned to leave. He yelled “yea, thanks a lot for nothing” at me as I left, which soured the experience for me. I would have been happy to bus, but needed a little more instruction than “take that over there” and watching me be confused. In the future, I would ask that you have grace for people who may need a little more help — I really wasn’t trying to make anyone’s life harder and I think this could have been a positive interaction with a little more patience and instruction.

Google
Good pizza and they're open late! The pinball machines give a good vibe.

Google
Good food in general. The pizza sauce and cheese were both rather tasty. The garlic knots had good flavor to them. Worth a visit.

Google
Awesome pizza! Awesome space! My favorite karaoke bar, and the prices are wonderful. What more could you ask for?

Google
Yummmmayyyyy 😋 ...Errrthang! I'd eat here again; visit here again. The bartender/host was dope! Music was 🔥. The host was playing Fugee and Rootz type music. I enjoyed it. Pizza was 🔥 too! I think this was the vegan pizza I got. Yum!

Yelp
LOVED this place! Gotta tell you--didn't expect much going into it (Good Pizza in Seattle hasn't been easy to find). But everything about this place was nostalgic. The music, the booths, the smell of ACTUAL PIZZA DOUGH BEING MADE IN THE BACK! Got the potato pizza and had them add in all their sauces as sides so I could try them. Anchovy Caesar dressing ALONE was 10/10! The crust was thin, the cheese was gooey--like... I need to go back! Maybe even try their red gravy! Cute back stress with pinball machines-- and a chill bar for a nice afternoon.

Yelp
Was sent a "compliment" from the owner or manager. No accountability or apology. I also saw a new review from just 4 days ago noting the extremely rude staff. Those visiting out of town, don't let this place set the impression of Ballard. There are much better places to visit with kind wait staff. It's too bad because this place has potential.

Yelp
We got a gluten free Tom Selleck and a negroni; both were great! My non-gf boyfriend really liked the pizza - rice flour; thin and crispy. The bartender was super nice and we enjoyed the atmosphere. I forgot my coins this time, but we're excited to come back and play arcade games. The only caveat is that it was $55 pre-tip for a drink and 12" pizza. The pizza was $30 (gf adds $4 and subtracts 2", lol - not complaining about that; I know how hard it is to make quality gf stuff). However, I saw on my receipt that the negroni was rung up as a gin + cosmo, I'm guessing because they don't have negronis in their system. The most I've ever been charged for a negroni was $14, so that was kind of off-putting. I'll be more proactive about inquiring after the costs of things here in the future.

Yelp
I was cravings some yummy parmesan garlic knots so I figured I'd try this place out via door dash. I also got two slices of pepperoni pizza. Unfortunately, I was super bummed to find out the garlic knots were not included (nooooo ). We both thought the pizza was good (very thin but tasty, not greasy like some pizza can be which was nice). Wish I could give my thoughts on the garlic knots but I'm left imagining that.

Yelp
I'll start out with saying that almost any place with a kitchen that is open when the drunk people need it (aka past 10 pm) gets 5 stars and I go from there. I loved Vera's, and the pizza was delicious, their in house ranch was amazing, and the service was very enjoyable and attentive! We had a big party and the waiter did not treat it like an inconvenience to split the bill. Drinks were good, and it was cute and vintage and very seattle inside. I can't tell you how many times i've walked past this place and didn't realize it even existed!!! Do not overlook vera's

James G.

Yelp
Late 40s or so man with a beer gut was working behind the bar and clearly was drunk. Saw him yelling racial slurs at an Indian customer on the street when he was kicked out for being too drunk. Food was great. The drinks he made were terrible. Good business, terrible man.
google avatar

Tyler K.

Yelp
I was coming off the raw emotion of Challengers and was super revved up. I came in for a slice of pizza and that's what I got. It got the job done but was otherwise forgettable.
google avatar

Lee A.

Yelp
Great spot for food at 11pm when nothing else is open. It's good too. We go to concerts at Tractor or Sunset and are hungry after. Great place on a Thursday night when you need some really good (but quick) pizza. They have good drinks too! Definitely going there after the next concert too!

Yelp
I don't know what I'm missing here when looking at the other reviews. I've been here twice and both visits were lackluster. Maybe it's a standard thing? I can see the attraction here is that it's kind of a "hip" spot where all the 20 somethings run to as they're open pretty late and have pizza. It's got cool art on the wall, Hip hop blasting with a ping pong table, pinball and more. That's all fine though I suppose but seems more like a hangout spot first and the drinks and pizza are secondary. It's especially evident with the quality. Both my visits here the pizza was burnt, hard, not very cheesy slices for almost $6 a slice. Granted the pizza slices are big, but I'd rather have small slices that are good then these cardboard tasting pizzas. This is bar pizza, so the pepperonis are small which is passable, but there is a lack of consistency on them. The drinks are alright, maybe the best thing about this place. Staff is eh. They aren't unwelcoming, but they aren't very inviting either. All staff come off as inattentive and uninterested. So, drinks are decent and if you want a late night hang out Vera's ok, but outside of that it's forgettable.
google avatar

Parth S.

Yelp
The pizza was pretty good, and a good amount of food for 4 people with 2 appetizers. They do charge for sides of ranch, unfortunately. The garlic knots were very doughy, but the salad was very flavorful! Overall, it's okay. They do have a lot of seating, and is a good place to watch sports games and get drinks.

Yelp
Vera's is...so weird. The ambiance? Weird. It seems like a strange question, but does this even count as AN ambiance? NOTHING goes together in here. There are some cool pieces of art on the back wall, and nice modern-industrial light fixtures at the booths...and that's where the rational design choices end. Front doors that open directly to the SIDE (not the front) of a check/host stand? Instantly feels weird when you walk in. Chairs out of a 1950's Chinese restaurant paired with modern budget vinyl plank flooring and chintzy new black/chrome booths? So weird. That random ladder they have laying behind the skeeball machine in full view of everyone? Weird. Bright ass unshielded pink light bulbs in a wedge-shaped bathroom? Weird. Zebra pattern flooring?! Fucking weird! And possibly the weirdest thing about Vera's - the pizza was really. damn. good. Better than I'd like to admit, actually. The crust and sauce are both money- flaky and crunchy, and perfectly tangy and tomato-y...respectively. It just might be my new favorite pizza in Ballard. The wings were great too, fried nice and crispy and served with the sauces on the side. The salad also hit - we got the Greek, veggies were all very fresh and the dressing was surprisingly tasty. As far as service, we seated ourselves, and had to walk over and perform an elaborate circus dance to get the bartender's attention each time we needed something. FWIW he was pretty nice when he brought over our food. But yeah. Can you tell I rate on food? tl;dr Vera's ain't no first date spot, but the food is on point and takeout is always an option if you can't handle the abysmal vibes.

Yelp
Terrible experience!! Husband and I live in Ballard and were on a Saturday evening walk. Decided to pop into Vera's for a bite to eat. NOBODY was there, with exception of bartender and one other employee. The two of them were chatting and did not even give us the time of day as we stood there wondering if we should seat ourselves or?? After 10 mins bartender finally takes our order. Salad for me and single slice for babe. He brings out my salad and instead of handing to me, he sets it behind babe and I'm like honey can you hand me that? So weird. Babe is like where's my slice? 5 mins later we notice he's chatting on the phone and babes slice is sitting in the food window, getting cold. He brings it over and yet again, sets it behind us. WTF? Can you not hand us our food or set in front of us? WEIRD! He was rude and zero customer service. Usually your food is put in front of you to eat, not behind you to stick up your ass. Will not be back.
google avatar

Stephen L.

Yelp
Damn, this place is straight fire. Drinks are always so cold and well mixed. Pizza is something to die for, @&$$ pagliacci or any other place - this is the pizza you want. Met this girl here too
google avatar

Crystal H.

Yelp
Great local pizza joint with friendly service! It's exactly what you want from a pizza joint-- pizza by the slice or a whole pie. They have cheese or pepperoni by the slice and they have one or two rotating flavors. They also have pinball, ping pong, and a skeeball machine too!
google avatar

Shivam D.

Yelp
I've been here on multiple occasions and have enjoyed it each time. It's a great place for a casual hangout with friends, and usually isn't too busy. It is in downtown Ballard, which makes it a bit hidden and hard to find parking. Each time we've been, the food has been consistent - hot, yummy, and cheesy! We get the STG and a Veggie Supreme, with a side of garlic knots. They have a couple arcade games and even a ping-pong table, which is a nice touch. This is definitely a great spot for some comfort pizza, and I'd recommend giving it a shot :-)
google avatar

Jeremy S.

Yelp
Pros -delicious thin crust pizza -they have chili oil and parmeswan Cons -parking can be difficult -very expensive at $6 for a slice
google avatar

Connor B.

Yelp
I kept telling myself that eventually I'd stop in and grab a slice from Vera's despite my lactose intolerance, and eventually happened to be today. I walked in, sat at the bar, and Brian, the bartender greeted me immediately. He told me about the beers, and the difference slices they had. Brian and I shot the shit and talked about some of our funny experiences in the area. I ordered wings ($12) and a slice of veggie pizza ($5) and both were excellent! If you're looking for a cool spot with good people and a nice atmosphere, drop in. It's definitely worth it.
google avatar

Lizzy L.

Yelp
The pizza was decent and the drinks are really fun and unique. Mostly docking points for how slow and basically nonexistent the service was... we had to go up to find someone to serve us after being seated for over twenty minutes... big yikes
google avatar

Angela W.

Yelp
What a perfect place to get buy the slice pizza and good music + vibes.

Jeriel W.

Yelp
If you're ever wandering around Ballard and find yourself hungry and could appreciate some pizza. Do not count on Vera's to ever have a single slice of pizza.

Maxine T.

Yelp
Great atmosphere, great pizza, staff is super nice and caring. Def recommend if you're in the area

Lisa P.

Yelp
I love this spot! Great vibes and throwback music. Nostalgia at it's finest. The pizza is consistent, and the staff is great. Treat them as humans and they'll always remember you and take care of you. If you need to be wined and dined then go to a fine dining establishment. This is a pizza bar. Some of my fav pizza and staff in Seattle no doubt. Oh also the wings. GET THEM MEOW! The crispiest, most delicious wings. Not to mention they're gluten free! Omg. Run, don't walk!
google avatar

Mark B.

Yelp
Best pizza I've ever had. Owner is great, drinks are fun. Must stop if you are in Ballard.

Samantha M.

Yelp
Great pizza and good vibes. Came here on our visit to Seattle. Would visit again if we come back.
google avatar

Theresa C.

Yelp
I brought a couple of friends here after visiting the Ballard Market. We waited for 15 minutes for someone to take our order. Then we waited 45 minutes for the pizza to be delivered to the table. The bar was empty. While the pizza was hot, it was soggy and greasy. We had a vegan pizza. I won't ever recommend Vera's to anyone. Too bad because it used to be a fantastic breakfast place.
google avatar

Neetu L.

Yelp
The pizza felt over priced for what we got. We ordered a veggie supreme and pepperoni. Honestly there's better pizza places in Seattle.
google avatar

Mike M.

Yelp
Great NUC style pizza. They get just about everything right. I wish they had their own delivery because the delivery services give me cold food half the time. But it's worth the trip for a pickup.
google avatar

Jamie P.

Yelp
Big sign above says Vera's Pizza and Bar, but when you get to the Front door, it's covered/frosted with pop images and says 21+ . This is a late night, straight up bar only. That serves some food- which is good but a tad pricey for being served on paper plates and paper bowls. Greek salad was the fave. They have this chili oil to add your food on that tastes like pho! Service is kind and attentive. New York style pizza is good, but for those looking for similar pizza, I'd say pagliaccis surpasses in quality and flavor profile. Honestly the quasi-transition from a family cafe to an evening dive bar is awkward at best. Decor seems undecided. Identity issues. We were hoping for more of tightly-organized Za spot like The Ridge!

Kayla W.

Yelp
Do not come here for gluten free pizza. Regular pizza is top notch according to my gluten eating friends. There is other gluten free options such as wings that are very good. Full bar is also a plus they also have 3 slushy drinks with yummy flavors Pros with gluten free pizza: Size Good toppings/ sauce Cons: Was closer to eating a cracker, very crunchy. Not due to over cooking but the thickness of the crust?
google avatar

Abigail K.

Yelp
This is definitely a great place to find yourself late at night with a friend! Vera's has a cool edgy vibe with a disco ball hanging from the ceiling, mood lighting, and old arcade games at the back. The pizza is fantastic - I highly recommend getting the white pizza or plain cheese with a side of garlic knots! Although I'm not a big drinker Vera's slushy margaritas are incredibly tasty and perfect for a fun night out.

Lucy D.

Yelp
Two stars for the pizza. It takes much less ongoing effort to make pizza than it does to think about how you service people. On a hot evening, the row of windows are open and my pizza, which was done sooner than expected sat in the breeze. The guy was standing near the door talking to someone and gestured to me to go get my pizza instead of taking two steps to get it and hand it to me. I knew immediately it was not hot, said so and he shrugged!!! -5 for his work ethic

Matthew B.

Yelp
Without a doubt the best pizza I've had in Seattle. Haven't been able to find NYC style pizza until now. Have only had great experiences with their food.
google avatar

Sasa P.

Yelp
Thankfully they're still open for takeout/delivery during this coronavirus crisis! Dang, they had some great slices of pizza (and they sell by the slice). The guy was super nice -- he made a fresh pepperoni just for us, since they were out. All around would recommend!
google avatar

Michael P.

Yelp
We finally had a chance to go to Vera's and man, this place is AMAZING! This use to be a diner and recently re-opened, and for the better. Massive Pro's + 21 and over only + nice selection of beers and booze options + The pizza is, flat out, the best NY style pizza we've had since we moved to the West (Best) Coast. Frankly it's pretty much the best pizza we've had in Ballard. The overall vibe ruled, killer paintings of Prince, Nas, Sade, Outkast and more line the walls. Pinball machines in the back (woo!) and the chill lighting really made us not want to leave. Oh yeah, and the music was fantastic! Space wise it's large and plenty of room for 2 people and larger groups. The time we went there was a large party of 10-12 and all looked to be having a great time. And now...the pizza. They have a nice range of pies to pick from, or go with a slice. There's also a DIY option for those who want to roll the bones on coming up with a good combo. We went with the caramelized mushroom pizza that was under "White". Expecting something rich and/or some actual white sauce we were pleasantly surprised when it came out and had no sauce, just some olive oil as the base. Pizza was expertly dressed, a great balance of mushrooms, cheese and spinach, with NO extra moisture from the 'shrooms or the spinach. The crust....hoo boy was that great. Thin, slightly yeasty (but not pronounced) with just the right amount of give to it, plus a crispy edge. One thing I personally never eat are the crusts from pizza...until now. I couldn't stop eating this! As a side note, the pizza the next day, in the oven, was almost better than in the restaurant...and yes, I ate the crust on day 2! This could easily become a weekly place to hit up and chill out at, can't wait to go back. Well done!

Yelp
The Place: Vera's transformation from a family style diner to a 21+ late night establishment was well done. The space is well decorated and has great vibes. It is great that it is open really late as it gives us late night owls (including me, the grad student) a place to hang out in Ballard. The Food: This is the new place to get good pizza in Ballard people! There is only one other high-end pizza place that can beat this place, the other existing pizza places in Ballard can't compare to the awesomeness of here. The pizza and salads are fresh, there are vegan and carnivore options, and you can get By-the-Slice if you don't want to stuff your face with a whole pie. Recommendations for the business: You have a nice setup with mostly permanent utensils and glasses... you really should invest in some more durable/compostable plates so the wonderful rivers of pizza liquid grease don't soak through and ruin the varnish on your tables. Also, you have the space to add coat hangers on the booths, if you add these your patrons will love you forever for the thoughtfulness of our rainy weather. Final recommendation is to cut the salad quantity and cost in half (make half as less) and you hit the just right size for individual portions. We will be back! Thanks for the great pizza!
google avatar

Katya G.

Yelp
It's not quite as good as real NY thin crust pizza, but the closest we've found on the west coast. The pies are huge- we ordered a whole one for 2 hungry adults and barely ate half. We got a "DIY" red sauce pizza with aged mozzarella, Italian sausage, spinach and roasted garlic, and we also tried 1 slice of the white pizza with caramelized mushrooms. I actually liked the white slice better, but they were both good. The garlic knots were also delicious and authentic-tasting. We did carry-out so I can't comment on the in-house experience, but the food is excellent. New go-to pizza source.

T H.

Yelp
Absolutely some of the best slices I've had in Seattle. Thin burnt crust, loud salty sauce and not overly priced. Plus you can get it at midnight in Ballard when everything else is closed. Biggest bummer is that it's not super busy, wish more people were here to ensure it's success.
google avatar

Sage N.

Yelp
Hands down my favorite pizza spot in Seattle. I've been searching for 3 years! Garlic knots are good too
google avatar

Melia H.

Yelp
Great pizza. Thin, perfect crust. Deeeeelicious. Good variety of menu items. And now I'm hungry for pizza.
google avatar

J S.

Yelp
Excellent late night pizza option. Great service, huge pizza slices, great tasting pizza. Will def be back.
google avatar

Karthik R.

Yelp
I'm gonna be honest. I used to talk smack about Seattle not having good pizza....until I found this place. Incredible pies! I usually grab a slice whenever I walk by or a couple of larges when I have to order for events.

B V.

Yelp
Hands down the best NY style pizza I have found in Seattle in my 3.5 years of desperately searching for it. Name any place claiming NY pizza, I've been there... I've gone all the way up to Everett before just for a slice on the recommendation of a colleague. The pizza is foldable, good cheese, good sauce, and it's very thin (like God intended). Good ambiance and great music selection. Didn't try the drinks but did get some house made grenadine in my diet Coke, so I'd guess the drinks are good. Do yourself a favor and get a slice
google avatar

James C.

Yelp
Best pizza in Seattle if you like a NY style slice. Greasy goodness.
google avatar

Miriam M.

Yelp
Best pizza and wings in Seattle! I've tried a few slices of different varieties here, and they are all so amazing, I can't pick a favorite. This is actual New York style pizza. So many places say that have that style, but this is actually LEGIT! Also, for some reason, good wings are hard to find in Seattle, but these were so good that I will never try wings anywhere else, because THEY ARE PERFECTION! If you can eat a naked style wing without having to dip, you know they are good! So glad this place re-opened as a pizzeria!
google avatar

Nicole S.

Yelp
This was hands down the best pizza I have had in my 5 years in Seattle. Coming from the east coast this is the only thing that has even come close to what I think of as good simple traditional pizza. Everything from the crust to the sauce to the cheese was perfection. And for the price you absolutely cannot beat it. Got a slice of cheese and it was $4 and was 1/4 of a large pizza. Excellent spot and I will for sure be making the trip back over from cap hill just for a slice.
google avatar

Jadie S.

Yelp
Love this place! Quality pizza that is enjoyable at all hours of the night! Super friendly staff and owner. Would highly recommend to anyone that has late night cravings for GREAT pizza

Hal M.

Yelp
Adequate pizza slices. Indifferent service from bartender. Ok place if you're in the neighborhood, but not worth a trip crosstown. Mind-numbingly loud hip hop soundtrack makes conversation impossible beyond 18". I had two slices. First was a quattro formaggio that had been sitting for a while, and was a bit dry (both crust and topping) after reheating, although the crust still had quite a nice flavor. Second was a pepperoni, more or less right out of the oven, which was pretty good. These are New York style pizzas, and definitely hit that style well. I had to flag down the bartender (who was chatting with friends) to remind him about my pepperoni slice sitting on the kitchen counter, although an obvious regular sitting next to me had his slice from the same pie delivered immediately by the kitchen runner. I expect the single-slice quality will improve as they figure out when to pull pies out of the oven for reheating. And maybe the kitchen will get a bell or something to signal the bartender that food is up. I'll be back if I'm hungry late at night. But I won't be bringing anyone with me.
google avatar

Mark B.

Yelp
Really great pizza! Been here 5 years now and have missed classic east coast style pizza more than I miss my family. This was the perfect thing to end our night on. A large, delicious, and cheap slice of pizza. We're gonna make the trip back from Capitol Hill just for the pizza. If they delivered I'd die happy in my apartment.
google avatar

Chris J.

Yelp
Excellent pizza slice, even after reheat in oven, tasted fresh, good crunch, great sauce, good pepperoni. I was just passing through and stopped randomly. I will definitely be back even though I don't live close by. I can't wait to try more of the menu. Best slice I've had in a while. Thanks.
