Chinese Chef Meng Defei Is Opening Xibei in Silver Lake - Eater LA

"A new restaurant called Verde from partners Koire Rogers and Anthony Laborin debuted in mid-November in Costa Mesa at 2675 Irvine Avenue. The two-story spot features California cooking from chef Paula Balderrama (formerly of Pizzeria Mozza, Folks Pizzeria) including dishes like a ribeye cap topped with anchovy herb butter and barramundi with mashed parsnip and walnut crumble." - Cathy Chaplin

Such a cute little hidden gem. Their appetizers are all healthy, hearty and delicious. Their skirt steak is cooked to perfection with a yummy sauce. Burger was super juicy. Above all was their awesome service. Highly recommend and cannot wait to dine there again!

Absolutely gorgeous meal! Our server Nicole was great. Each dish had details that elevated them. I plan on trying the cocktails next time. We had the mushroom appetizer, the squash appetizer, the tagliatelle Bolognese, and their chocolate and yogurt dessert

Excited to finally have a restaurant at the Back Bay Center. The cuisine is elevated California cuisine which for the area is a good choice. The drink options are great to pair with dishes, although we had the chilled red blend. Hoping to see a more adventurous menu in the future. The curry was very earthy, with tumeric and pureed vegetables notes. Assortment of vegetables was pleasing and cooked well. The sea bass was also cooked exceptionally well, skin adorned with nuts. Light and savory. I also haven't really ever been served blistered grapes in mashed parsnips so that was new to me, and it was nice.

Excellent meal. We started with the chips and dip - homemade potato chips were excellent. Followed with the gem salad which was really good - bacon was still hot when it came out. We finished with the rainbow trout which was also superb and piping hot which I loved. The side on the rainbow trout was sautéed snap peas which was unique, delicious and felt healthy. Overall a great meal!

You must try Verde Restaurant if you are looking for inventive and delicious food! The service is impeccable and the cocktails are amazing and unique. Ask the owners, Anthony or Koire, to surprise you with a cocktail. They won’t disappoint.

My Husband and I love this place. The smoked salmon dip is fantastic and for drinks it's difficult to find something better in orange county. I think they have someone who is known in the industry for making specialty cocktails there. I'm a home decorator and antique connoisseur myself and while I'm ultimately going to eat, I can't help but appreciate good design. The interior design at Verde is exquisite, blending a nostalgic charm with modern elegance. It's the kind of place where you walk in and immediately think that you couldnt have found a better place to unwind after a long week.

I don’t ever write reviews, as in never ever. But Verde has stolen my heart. It’s just obvious that the people who run this place love their craft, which is all too rare these days. Interesting dishes, super creative cocktails, great service. Highly recommend the steak, I’ve had it twice now. But that burger does have me rubbing my hands together and lickin’ the ol’ lips every time I see it go by to another table. Fave drink so far is the “kinda like chartreuse” one, a fantastic gin concoction.

Well prepared and delicious. Loved the crew’s attention to detail and how caring and accommodating they were to the guests’ preferences. Would highly recommend

Yelp
Verde in Newport Beach? Absolute amazing!! Chef Paula is a genius in the kitchen. Every dish was perfectly executed, balanced, and straight up bursting with flavor. You can taste the skill and creativity in every bite. Here's what we feasted on: - Hanger steak - juicy, tender, chef's kiss - Catch of the day (Cod) - fresh af, perfectly cooked - Salmon - cooked to perfection with a crispy skin and incredible seasoning - Seafood stew - loaded with flavor and seafood in every bite - Half chicken - crispy skin, juicy inside - Salmon & Hamachi Crudo - so fresh, so clean - Roasted pickled carrots - unexpected star of the night Pulled up on a Wednesday night, and the place was packed, very lively but still cozy. And shoutout to Miranda for the top notch service! Even with the crowd, she made sure we were taken care of. Thanks Chef Paula and team for a great night! Our bellies are happy!

Yelp
Nice try BUT. Here is my review. Food was disappointing I was expecting so much more. We ordered two entrées. The hamburger for $25.00 looked really delicious in the photos. First the bun was burned black on top not toasted burned. The burger was a smash type burger and cooked well which was fine but had broken in half during preparation and held together with the cheese after starting to eat 1/2 the meat fell out of the burger onto the plate. There were too many sautéed onions and the bun got gooey. The fries were the worst I have had in a long time seemed to have used frozen fries some were clumped together is a mass. I asked the waitress if they made the fries on site and she said no so the frozen type seemed possible, definitely not good. The 1/2 chicken, $37.00 was very small portion a very small chicken used and the chicken was dry, another disappointment. They have an automatic door up front which was quite irritating as you can not close it behind you until it decides to close which means cold air was rushing into the restaurant making it uncomfortably cold when the door was open. The decor was okay but sparse and so it was very noisy inside to the point it was hard to carry on a conversation. Too costly for what was provided by about $10.00 per entree, would not go back. Food: 3/5 | Service: 3/5 | Atmosphere: 3/5

Yelp
The food was amazing! One of the better restaurants in OC right now- we had the carrot, crudo & trout dip app. AMAZING! We got pastas for our main, which were also outstanding. Our cocktails were some of the more balanced and interesting drinks we have had in a while. The food really could not get any better. Unfortunately, service is mediocre. It took five minutes from sitting down to get water and another 10 to get our cocktails. Apps came out before our drinks. Food on table and dirty dishes were not cleared. When our entrees came out, we had to forks to eat it with! If this place had great service, it would undoubtedly be a 10/10.

Yelp
I think this place is still working out the kinks, but has a lot of potential. Service was a bit hit or miss. The menu is interesting and the food was promising but in many cases needed a little extra seasoning. The onion dip was a lot of fun but needed more chips, our waiter did offer some. My salmon was cooked well but could have used a pinch of salt to liven it up. The same was true of the mushroom starter. This location is easy to get to with lots of parking. The cocktails and menu items are very creative. It's definitely worth checking out, especially as they mature.

Yelp
Verde was excellent... many of the staff came from Mozza and the chef trained under Nancy Silverton. I had the salmon prepared as their daily catch...DELISH!!

Yelp
I've come here for lunch and dinner. Cocktails are fantastic. Really enjoyed the carrot cocktail. It was more pineapple forward than carrot forward. Our party shared a wealth of dishes, including the steak tartare, onion dip, catch of the day, hanger steak, duck salad and tagliatelle. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend any of the dishes but found the fish to be particular good and well cooked. Service was very friendly and attentive. The restaurant has a really nice, lively and casual vibe. Wouldn't hesitate to come back. We checked the bar out downstairs and it has a great vibe too!

Yelp
Verde consists of two parts, a bright and open restaurant on the top level and a cozy, lavish bar downstairs. The downstairs bar also serves some food, and the upstairs restaurant also has a bar. My friend and I dined at the restaurant this time but I'll definitely be back to hang out in the bar. Service was top notch. We were always attended to and although they give you a jug of water for the table, I never had an empty glass as they continually came to pour it for us. The menu is seasonal, made with ingredients from local providers so you know everything is top quality. So many things sounded good that I want to try it all, but my friend and I split 3 appetizers, one salad, one main and one dessert. We truly enjoyed every dish. The onion spread was so unique that I recommend giving it a try. I'm a huge steak tartare fan and theirs was absolutely delicious. And another standout was the duck salad. It was so light and fresh and it's not often you see the addition of duck. We rounded out the meal with the wild mushrooms and the hanger steak, both perfectly cooked. Don't forget about their cocktails which are unique and expertly crafted. Lip Service was nice and cozy with the addition of spiced pear. My friend enjoyed her two mocktails as well. I look forward to returning!

Yelp
My friend and I went here for OC restaurant week and we loved it! Definitely coming back here. Service was amazing, food was excellent. The vibe there was really nice.

Yelp
Saw this new restaurant Verde when I walked by (it's close to my house) so I thought I would stop by with a friend and try it out. Glad I did. Amazing food and service. Started with a few cocktails. I got the Overnight Celebrity and my friend got the Lip Service. She said it was amazing. Loved my drink as well. Super balanced and on the fruity side but not sweet. They said they jigger everything so the measurements are always exact. We then shared two appetizers: Steak Tartar: This was the star of the show tonight. Super fresh and tasty. Generous portion too. Also got the Onion Dip with chips. This was a superb dip. Never had anything like this. Didn't taste "oniony" if you know what I mean. The dip was so good I asked for another bowl of chips! We then split the Market Salad. Very delicious salad. Big too! Big enough for us to share. Fresh greens and veggies. Loved the feta on top. Highly recommend this salad. For the entrees we go the burger. SUPER JUICY AND JUST THE RIGHT SIZE. Not too big where you're eating so much burger you feel gross afterwards. This was just perfect. Juicy, fresh, and delicious. We opted for a side of aioli to go with the fries. We also shared the Tagliatelle pasta. Homemade pasta very fresh and light. Great texture and flavor. Ended the night with coffees and desserts. They have two dessert options. We got both! Chocolate cake and the Frozen custard with pistachio and kumquats. Both were excellent. Not overly sweet or rich. Service was perfect. Never had to ask for anything. Servers and bussers all worked well together and brought out food and drinks in a timely manner. Very professional and hospitable staff. Also super spacious and clean restaurant. Lots of open lighting and windows. We have to check out the bar downstairs next time. Overall a very good dining experience. Glad I saw this while walking my dogs and we definitely enjoyed the dinner. Highly recommend this spot!

Yelp
Verde is absolutely amazing! From start to finish, the service was top-notch--attentive, friendly, and genuinely accommodating. As a very picky customer, I was so impressed with how they handled my requests with ease and kindness. The food was outstanding! The vegetables were incredibly fresh and crisp, and the salmon was cooked to absolute perfection--flaky, flavorful, and just the right texture. They even brought out extra hot sauce for me, which was such a thoughtful touch. And the dressing? So good that next time, I'll be getting it tossed in for even more flavor. The ambiance is young, hip, and in a great location--definitely a cool spot to hang out and enjoy an amazing meal. The menu has so many great options that I'm already planning my next visit to try their curry and other appetizers. Wow--loved everything about this place! Highly recommend!

Yelp
Do you crave great service? This is your spot? Casual, inviting with crazy good service! Ask for Alexander and Dylan to serve you. We ordered the onion spread ad an appetizer with homemade chips it was crispy and delicious and not to oniony. We ordered the butter lettuce salad- which was delicious. The finely chopped ingredients were especially delicious! Followed by the incredible pasta dish, Girella, savory ricotta and vegetables was Devine They were very accommodating and gracious 5 plus stores!

Yelp
Located within the Irvine Ranch Market shopping center. There is parking on the lower level or you can drive around back for some additional upper level parking. Their restaurant is on the upper level, while their bar is on the lower level. The two businesses are under the same name, but have different hours and menus, so be mindful. Wife and I went for lunch, so I can't comment on the bar atmosphere, as it's only open later, but there is a small bar within the restaurant, too. The restaurant is upscale casual with very lively and vibey happy music. There is indoor, outdoor (with umbrellas and heat lamps if necessary) and bar seating. Full service, sitdown restaurant. Fast and very friendly service! I tried the a la carte tacos - shrimp, salmon, and carne asada. Shrimp was my favorite! They're served on blue corn tortillas with very flavorful toppings. Wife tried the trout sandwich (not fishy smelling or tasting at all) and she chose fries as opposed to a salad for her side. I tried both and would've been happy had I ordered that. Lip Service gin cocktail was recommended to me as their most popular, and I was not disappointed. Great experience, and we look forward to visiting the bar next time!

Yelp
Great new spot by Irvine Ranch Market over by Back Bay. Tried the half chicken, butter meat salad, onion dip, cheese burger, salmon, and the tagliatelle. Service was attentive and warm, especially the hostess inviting us to the downstairs bar where there is a DJ and fun cozy bar seating with a small standing area. Great spot to get together either friends - beautiful aesthetic inside, interesting/intriguing menu, and delicious cocktails.

Yelp
What a great little find. Came here after a theater performance at Lyceum and we were greeted by very nice staff and after being seated, our server Gabby. We were waiting for another couple to arrive and there was no rush. Gabby (who was fantastic) explained the specials and warned us if we wanted to order one of them, there were only 2 left, so she could start it while the rest of us made up our mind. My wife and I shared a salad (big) and the Girella and ordered the carrot appetizer for the table. Our friends also shared a salad and the seafood stew. All were outstanding. The only complaint we had was that it was kind of noisy. They said that when the weather is warmer they can open the patio doors and it dissipates the noise. We'll have to return to try it out.

Yelp
This was unexpectedly an incredible meal! We went in the evening and it is tucked on the second floor of a strip mall area? I am not familiar with the shopping area but it seemed like everything was closed at the time we went on first glance so at first glance you may not expect it. The food tasted so fresh and I can tell they took care with the ingredients. From top to bottom including the drinks the food was delicious! My partner got the lip service cocktail and he really enjoyed it! I highly recommend the gem lettuce salad I think that what it's called. That was my favorite since it was so light and fresh. I wish all places had salads like this! We also got the tagliatelle pasta with meat sauce which was excellent I'm pretty sure it was fresh made pasta which gives extra points. And we also got the cod which was the catch of the day which we finished so fast it was that good. I know this place only opened in November so I'm very impressed with it! My only recommendation to add a nice touch is the paper menus kind of made it seem too casual, but I think the food and prices aims to be more upscale. If they put the paper menus in a folder or something I think that would be a nice touch. I know I'm picky but everything else I don't have any complaints or suggestions so that's saying something! Go check this place out if you want a fresh and great tasting quality meal! We will be back I love that it's seasonal menu items so looking forward to what they have next!

Yelp
Appetizer has hair inside... We went there during a week day. Order steak tartar, seafood stew and cheese burger with fries. ( total bill with tip is $3 short from $100) I would think this should be a restaurant with decent quality, but obviously not... We were excited to try the steak tartar, cuz I really like raw beef. When I had the second piece of bread with the steak tartar, I realize there was something like a hair in the middle of the tartar in my mouth. I had to pull out the hair. ... I almost was going to throw up. Called the waiter and told him the situation, he just said a quick sorry and took the dish ( I was discussed by the hair so didn't take the photo) The entree seafood stew was a $ 40 dish but the seafood was like frozen small tinny pieces. Flavor was good but I don't feel it has the value. Until the end, no store manager or owner came to ask or say sorry about the hair inside the appetizer.

Yelp
My husband and I tried both the upstairs restaurant and downstairs bar. The superstar of the show was the cocktail at Verde! Great options that were unique and delicious! The food was also great! We enjoyed the smoked trout as an appetizer and seafood stew and burger as our entrees. The seafood stew is a yummy spicy option and the burger was a solid classic with crunchy fries. The ambiance in the restaurant is very open and brighter so for us it didn't match up to the food and drinks. It felt not as intimate or cozy for a date night but seemed better for larger groups. The downstairs bar was amazing creating a pub like experience with bar seating, leather chairs and couch, and bench/table seating. We went downstairs to enjoy some delicious charcuterie options as our dessert. This has some amazing potential plus the owners have shared that they work with local farmers for seasonal produce and offerings to create an exciting new experience each time!

Yelp
Discovered this place via OC Restaurant Week! What a gem! They obviously take great pride in every dish and provided tasty pairings (special Tin City Vodka aperitivo, fish paired w/Tablas Creek White Blend, steak paired w/Tablas Creek Red Blend) My friend had the salmon and I had the skirt steak prepared perfectly medium rare! Dessert of citrus semifreddo topped with kumquats carmelized in orange liqueur and pistachios was delightful! Wonderful experience! Dillon our server and others were extremely attentive!

Yelp
What a welcome addition. Verde is located near Irvine Ranch Market on Irvine Avenue. We went for lunch and the food service and both cocktails and cocktails creative and delicious. The view out the windows and off the deck is impressive. Can't wait to co back!

Yelp
I visited Verde this past Friday and will definitely be back! Our server was attentive and got our drinks and appetizer order in right away. We started with the smoked trout dip, which was absolutely delicious. For our main dishes, my friend and I shared the farmers market salad and girella pasta--both were perfectly prepared and well-seasoned. The cocktails were also expertly crafted and complemented the meal beautifully. Excited to return for lunch and another dinner visit soon.

Yelp
What a wonderful new addition to the neighborhood. Healthy, clean and green menu. Lots of options and flexibility without seed oils. Homemade pasta, the salmon was perfect perfectly cooked, chimichurri sauce was decadent on perfectly toasted and grilled toast with the fish dip and the wild mushrooms were amazing. Beautiful bar and green wall in a perfect little hidden nook in Newport/Costa Mesa. So glad they've joined the neighborhood and we will definitely be back. oh and I forgot to mention the great wine list - lots of Italian and French options which we love and the cocktails were amazing. And great service and ambience to top it off! Definitely should be on your list for a great date night, business dinner or some drinks!

Yelp
Verde is amazing! I went for dinner with friends a few weeks ago and was so impressed. Jessica was our server, and she was excellent. She was very attentive and had great knowledge of the menu and suggestions for us to try. For appetizers, we had beef tartare, asparagus, and roasted pickled carrots. The pickled carrots were amazing, and the verde sauce in the dish was addicting! I loved how the chef incorporated every part of the carrot so as not to waste anything. We decided on ordering a few entrees to share and settled on the farmers market salad, tagliatelle, and hanger steak. Our steak was cooked perfectly and was a great size to share, and the vinaigrette on the farmers market salad was perfection. And don't forget to order a cocktail! Anthony, part-owner and head mixologist, stopped by our table to drop off the drinks. He was so charming! The drinks are so creative; each one I tried was delicious. Overall, we had an amazing time at Verde and most definitely will be back! Heading to Bar Verde next time is a must for me and the girls!!

Yelp
Koire and Anthony, we have been so looking forward to a really great Italian food experience in Newport. Guess we'll have to keep looking. The food was so anticipated: Good: -Butter Lettuce Salad with (unplated) mild anchovies -Water service -Clean Bad: -Tagliatelle a warm meal in a ice cold bowl, also specifically ordered it not-al dente and the server or chef ignored the request. The pasta never had a chance to absorb the little amount of sauce and luke warm meat. -Girella too much lemon and cheese - Bread and Olive Oil, we were never served or offered anything Wine: - Sangiovese, what Italian resturant runs out of Italian red wine. Poor excuse by the waiter. Owners, get in the car and go to Hi-Times for more wine? Really. Atmosphere: - Noisy, we were at a table for 4 and could not barely hear our conversation until then room empited Service: - No one asked if our meal was okay and quite frankly not certainour server really cared. If you are serious about how to create a real experience the owners need to read the book "Setting the Table", Danny Meyer. Chef Paula, 3 stars is a gift.

Yelp
I came here after my New Mom School class to meet my mom and we had a fabulous lunch! The food was absolutely amazing, we both agreed we would be back! I got the wrap and she got the tacos, and then we split desert (the frozen custard) and I would recommend all of them! It was nice a quiet, my baby got fussy but everyone was really kind and I had room to walk her around and still enjoy my lunch. The owners were there serving and chatting with us - they really made the experience really great! If you've been thinking about checking it out I would!

Yelp
I've been here several times, and it's never too busy to grab a spot at the bar. Everything is delicious, but the duck salad didn't quite hit the mark for me, mainly due to the arugula and the quality of the meat. The beef tartare, however, is exceptional with a refreshing hint of lemon zest. The wild mushrooms are fresh and worth every penny. If you're looking for healthier options, this place offers quality, freshly prepped ingredients. Just keep in mind, nothing comes out faster than 30 minutes after you order, so be prepared for a wait.

Luca A.

Yelp
What a nice place! Tried this for the first time today, I was impressed by the food, service and vibes. The restaurant is run by people who know what they are doing, both in the kitchen and bar. The butter lettuce salad is one of my favorite salads in Orange county's: perfectly crisp and sweet! 10/10 The seafood stew was good, but the broth needed something more in my opinion. The bartender, Cory, is very nice and cordial. The owners are great people with positive vibes. I really like this place, I highly recommend it

Kearci M.

Yelp
The ingredients are all locally grown: the dishes are creative and change which what's in season! service is very attentive and helpful when it comes to the menu. Loved the craft cocktails as well, and the decor is perfect - feels modern and timeless. Ready to be a regular here!! Must Try: Crudo Half chicken Duck salad Cigarettes & Coffee to drink

Yelp
Such a great vibe here. Our bartender Corey took great care of us. Really great cocktails and wines were unique and beautifully paired with the cuisine. Lots of unique and special food items. All staff was so friendly. We will definitely be back!

Peggy A.

Yelp
The carrots were the best thing in the menu. Drinks are overpriced and please don't order the skirt steak which later made me sick.

Denee S.

Yelp
I was so excited for this place to open. With the experience of the owners in the cocktail space, I was bummed about our visit. It was a slow night when we went so being busy isn't an excuse. Although these are small details, they all add up to us not going a second time. Martini glass was not chilled, no cocktail napkin/coaster, and most of all....the bartender was not engaging or informative. We asked what a certain bottle was, and he replied "it's a bourbon". Ummm yea we can tell much, but what's the name, why is part of the curated whiskey bottles you have up there. Usually we stay for at least 2 drinks but only had 1 because of the experience.
google avatar

Adam B.

Yelp
Skirt steak was excellent. Cooked perfectly and high quality. Wine was very reasonable price and was delicious. Great spot.

Yelp
This restaurant is great! Everything about it - from the location to the food, drinks, service, and atmosphere - it's absolutely perfect. This is exactly what this area has needed for years. The space strikes a perfect balance between elegance and simplicity, making it ideal for both family outings and romantic evenings with your significant other. I can't wait to check out the bar downstairs!

Puja S.

Yelp
My husband and I went with another couple. We ordered 3 appetizers - the crudo, the mushrooms, and the trout dip. For the price point, we were disappointed by the quality of the food. Nothing tasted amazing. The entrees were good (my husband and I got the salmon). The wine list was terrible. Our friends ordered cocktails and liked them. All in all, it was a mediocre experience and I won't be back.

Yelp
BEST PIZZA EVER! Everything is amazing! All fresh and best quality ingredients. Great beers and service is always friendly and fast. You will have to wait for a table, but it is ALWAYS worth it! Vibe is fun

Yelp
Went tonight and had an absolute great time. The food and service was amazing. Even though they were very busy, the servers were very attentive. The smoked trout shared plate was phenomenal. Also enjoyed the Crudo and wax beans. We then had the trout which was fantastic. Our dessert was downstairs at their bar where we had great cocktails,. Looking forward to our next visit!

Nicole E.

Yelp
Second time upstairs at this fun new neighborhood restaurant- my favorite is the smoked trout appetizer- very flavorful. Everyone we've met on the management staff is super engaging, cool and helpful. They just installed a huge tv in the downstairs bar (nice loungey vibe, versus the light & airy upstairs) so will be back soon to try the menu down there during a sporting event, rainy evening or after dinner aperitif!

Yelp
Drifted in as a foodie friend said, " Hip new Restaurant In CM" Came into a smooth bar vibe ,some fresh music and comfortable bar stools. Had to try the most creative cocktails Ive seen in a long time . Being a East coast city guy it takes alot to impress. How about The" Overnight Celebrity", with infused Campari, take a sip of the "Cigarettes and Coffee" a Rye based drink seldom seen, any more with Havana Bitters, or the " Definitely Not a Cosmo" with Tequila, go to the website you will see my favorite " Old Man Trouble" There were three of us including a NYC couple who eat out 3 nights a week The apps we split were eclectic mix. the Salmon and Hamachi, and the Onion spread laced with Cognac , two salads u can get with chicken, Salmon or shrimp, both tasty Farmers Market Lettuce and Duck Salad confit with belgian endive and sage covered Garbanzo, both very different,The Dinner was mix a Pacific striped bass with parsnips and Brus Sprouts cooked perfectly , a Hanger steak with anchovy sauce was good but could have been a slightly crisper on the outside but the anchovy sauce was as should be "Not to strong".The Seafood stew was as good as my last one at La Maseria in New York. Plenty of veggie hot and cold options,, A better than most List of Craft beers and a unique blend of wines by the glass. Two veteran restaurant friends Anthony and Koire head up the operation and Chef Paula Balderrama helming The back of the house, make a team that will be a sure winner in the Crowded Costa Mesa restaurant scene. There is a outside patio and upstairs room for private parties , Comfortable ,seating all around with service better than most especially for a new operation..Looks like could be a good stop late evening burger as they serve till 10 or so?
