If you are looking for something more than the usual Saturday night dinner experience, Veritas Wine Room's tasting is a great change of pace. Spend two hours mingling, tasting, learning, and making new friends (and after 16 wines, you'll be best of friends by evening's end! Just don't expect to remember anyone's name the next day.) The sommelier (is he one? I care not. Let's continue...) stands near the front of the deep, galley-shaped, dark room just behind his wide row of wines that I daresay he knows better than the back of his hand. I'm pretty sure he knows not only the specific region, hill, or valley from whence the grapes originate, but the vine itself. He knows the wine that well. There is a light menu; I mainly saw charcuterie plates, and I wasn't wowed by the Veritas plate that I got but let's face it--this place is about the wine.
The place seems to be somewhat awkwardly laid out--the space could be better used. People stand about waiting for their next refill in a too-slim area at the front, people just entering have to edge past them to find a table and pay to begin, and it's somewhat chaotic in general near the wine. But the entire back half of the place stays near empty. Another oddity is the wall décor. It seems as though the owners are connoisseurs of wine more than art... or perhaps they are just making it known that they are male. Either way, it would be nice as a female not to look at the wall and feel as though I'm at a place that caters only to males if you catch my meaning...
But enough of the whine, and back to the wine. There is enough variety in the line-up to keep it interesting, but the wines are thoughtfully selected and the tasting flowed, even from white to red. Overall, Veritas is a really nice way to change up a Saturday night and precede a dinner somewhere on Henderson or Knox nearby.
