So glad to have a great pizza place in the neighborhood! We went on a Saturday night about 7:30. We got seated right by the door, which was a little hectic but cozy. We ordered the vero salad, a few pizzas, and dessert. The vero salad is a MUST - I could eat it every day! It's their take on a Greek salad - finely chopped with fresh herbs and yummy pickled onions. It pairs extremely well with the pizza!
for our 3 pizzas, we went traditional margherita (tomato sauce, mozz, fresh basil), mushroom (ricotta, maitake mushrooms, garlic), and sausage (tomato sauce, fennel sausage, rapini, pesto, and Calabrian chili). The margherita was good but the mushroom and sausage were exquisite. In fact, the mushroom may be my fave, despite the sausage pizza being a riff of my fave Valenza's orecchiette dish next door. I highly recommend both. Don't forget to ask for a dippy bowl of olive oil for your crust! Yum!
Dessert: CANNOLI. HOLY SMOKES. Please order these. One order comes with two small cannoli, easily splittable. The cannoli crust is hands down the best I've ever had - it was light, airy, flavorful and reminded me of an elevated funnel cake in terms of taste (not texture). The filling was smooth, creamy, and sweet - very light but decadent. I highly recommend!
The kinks with the pizza from opening night (too much char on the pizza, bland tomato sauce) seem to have been resolved in a very short time. The pizza should have a light char - that's the point - so please don't send it back if yours has a little on it. That's what makes it good!
A few logistical notes: while there is valet, Vero does not take reservations. You order at the counter and find a seat. This is NOT the place to linger on a long date or with a big group of friends - the line has been out the door both times when I've been so in order for people to sit, you gotta move on once you've eaten. The good news? Valenza and Haven have fab bars great for lingering and delicious dessert menus and coffee great for winding out your night so my rec is to eat pizza here and then move quickly next door for more catch-up/coffee/dessert (or walk across the street to Kaleidiscope, yet another great bar with terrific beer options). If you're in a big group, I'd recommend getting take out from Vero and eating at home - Vero is a very narrow space and not really suited for parties bigger than 6 (ideally you'd come here with 4 peeps or less). It's also really loud in Vero so in a large group, you won't hear one another (I struggled in my group of 4). And while you can order Haven's food in Valenza and vice versa, you cannot order Vero into Valenza or Haven.
Enjoy this delicious addition to Brookhaven! Yummy!
