The 28 Best Restaurants in Quebec City, Canada | Eater

"Small spaces often make for memorable experiences, especially at this French Mexican bistro. Through a fixed menu, chef duo Alexandra Romero and Jérôme Gilpin offer a refined, elaborate experience. The duo showcase local seasonal ingredients through the lenses of Gilpin’s French training and Romero’s Mexican heritage. The wine menu, which changes constantly, almost exclusively features private imports and natural wines. Reservations are mandatory." - Allison Van Rassel

The food here is amazing. The service is impeccable. The concept is unique. I was hesitant about going because it's out of my budget but it was so worth the splurge. It is one of the best meals I've ever had. Im still dreaming about the mole 🥹 There is a set menu that changes monthly but Jerome assured me that vegetarian options are available and possibly substitutions. (Im not a great photographer 🤭)

Verre Pickl’ has a winning formula. One table, one seating, 16 strangers that become friends by the end. Add excellent food using local ingredients with a Mexican flare and a great host, Jerome, it checks all the boxes. Our French is 1/10 but the fellow guests and Jerome were happy to include us with English as needed. We felt like we went to a friends house for dinner. I’ll recommend Verre Pickl’ to anybody coming to Quebec City. Alex and Jerome truly believe in local ingredients and we love supporting local farmers. The wine pairing was well thought out and a great addition to the set menu.

Thank you, Jerome, for a wonderful evening. Outstanding meal of local, seasonal ingredients with Mexican influence. Every course was memorable and top notch. The Mexican inspired corn was perfection; the scallop crudo and lamb tacos were absolutely delectable; and peach dessert was incredible. I really appreciate Jerome modifying things to make it all gluten and lactose free for me. Warm, welcoming and relaxing vibe. Hope to return next time we’re in Quebec.

Warm welcome. Very attentive and helpful staff. Restaurant service is different for lunch and dinner. At noon the concept is individual dishes. This time we went to try the tacos, which are on the menu for a limited time. There were chicken, carnitas, barbacoa, shrimp and vegetarian tacos, quesadillas and burritos. The tacos are very well served, plenty of filling and double tortilla. The tacos were served with a side of homemade green and red salsa, marinated onions, chiles en raja, cilantro and limes. Everything was delicious! Dessert was to die for 🤤! We will definitely be back for dinner!

Stopped by for a solo lunch - tried their lobster sandwich with a glass of wine. Both were excellent! The juicy, meaty, succulent lobster pairing so well with the dry Riesling… Lovely people too! They were fully booked, but said I could put my name down for dinner in case they had cancellations. And I did… and they did… and I somehow missed their phone call!! Drats!!! Well - next time!

Unique experience, went as part of a large group so we had the table to ourselves. The food was amazing but the main course was mindblowing

It is hard to put into words just how special our evening at Verre Pick'l was. Jerome and Alexandra have created an experience that cannot be missed. The food is incredible, creative, unique, and so thoughtfully planned and executed. The wine was perfectly selected and not your run of the mill options. The shared table made for a really fun evening meeting new people and sharing great food and great experiences. What makes this place so special are Jerome and Alexandra. They're two of the most warm, thoughtful, and beautiful people who just so happen to be the most incredible chefs. Jerome and Alexandra, thank you for a magical evening and delicious food. We hope you come visit us in NYC!

Amazing experience! We were visiting Quebec and luckily were able to get a reservation at Verre Pickl'. It was such a special dining experience where we got to interact with Alexandra throughout the night. Great food & wine - I would highly recommend!

Yelp
Let me start with this: anything negative in this review is my own damn fault and nothing to do with the restaurant. I don't speak French. I booked a single seat at a restaurant with 1 communal table in a French-speaking country. Let's just say it was a little awkward for me, as well as the other 9 French speakers at the table who kept glancing over at me and occasionally translating the story currently being told at the table. Not their fault...not the restaurant's fault...my fault alone. If you are traveling alone and don't speak French, keep it in mind when deciding to book here. That being said, the food was really delicious - mostly Mexican flavors, but with French influences. Started off with a nicely complex posole with pork jowl. Nice heat without being painful; pork was super-tender. Second course was a red snapper ceviche, served over a silky coconut & lime cream with green olives and green beans. A really interesting dish with elements you wouldn't think to put together but that worked really well. Third was zucchini fritters served with a green chile & pistachio mole. Fritters were light, mole was deep and tangy. Fourth was a perfectly cooked duck breast (crispy skin and all) served over a tomato, garlic, and pumpkin seed sauce. Best duck I've had in a good long while, and the sauce was absolutely delicious. He finished the meal with a quince and caramel tart served with dulce de leche sauce, which was a little sweet but really decadent. The chef introduced each dish (even giving me an abbreviated English version). Free shots were poured for the group twice in between courses. Service was attentive and accommodating. The whole experience took 3.5 hours which was a little long for 5 courses, but everybody at the table (who spoke French) was having a great time meeting the others and telling stories. Had I spoken French, I may have stayed longer to hang out, but the awkwardness hit the wall at the 210-minute mark and I asked for the check. If you speak French or have an English-speaking buddy to bring, I highly recommend the experience.
