11 Bars Where You Can Drink Malort in New Orleans | Eater New Orleans

"Malort made its way to this Central City institution of the debauch when bartender Voddy got tired of having to answer the drunken inquiry of “what’s a strong shot I can have?” As a joke, he brought in a bottle one day to quell this necessity, and to his surprise and astonishment, has made fans out of many patrons." - Paula Echevarria

Stopped in randomly during a walk in the Garden District. We were greeted with a Lively and friendly bartender named Dwayne. It was nice place to stop and grab a drink before we continued on our adventure. If you're in the neighborhood stop by. Grab a drink and enjoy the lively and colorful ambience.

A gem of a bar! Randomly walked in here at 3pm on a Saturday and didn’t want to leave. Everyone was so friendly. Loved the bartender, Duane!! Can’t wait to come back next time I’m in town!❤️

This is the best hidden gem of this trip. We love a good local/ dive spot and this takes the cake. It feels like my local spot but a little gayer in the best ways. The day time bartender Dwanyne is a sassy fabulous human giving great suggestions for night life and the nighttime bartender Hilary is an absolute queen. Her attentiveness and kindness is wonderful and unmatched. Great service, reasonal prices, fun atmosphere. Love it here.

Perfect little dive bar just a couple of blocks off of St Charles. Cold beer, cocktails, and Malört.

So happy to have stumbled upon this little gem. It's a small bar, but they've got games to play like scrabble and a mini basketball game. The bartender, Dwayne, was a riot! So happy to have met him.

Verret’s Lounge – A Must-Visit in New Orleans! If you’re ever in New Orleans, make sure Verret’s Lounge is on your list of places to visit! This hidden gem has a great local vibe, amazing service, and a laid-back atmosphere that feels authentically NOLA. I highly recommend trying Malört while you’re there—it was my favorite! It’s an acquired taste, but if you’re up for something unique, it’s a drink you won’t forget. Verret’s is a true neighborhood spot, perfect for both locals and visitors. Don’t miss out!

Google
One of the best times we haven’t had in New Orleans. It’s a friendly local neighbourhood pub, they even let me bluetooth my music to their sound system. The bartenders and locals told us about some great local events as well. Great bar. Bought the T-shirt.

Really enjoyed my time here! Super fun crowd, excellent staff, and good environment- I went during the day and had a blast! Drinks were wonderful! Trent (the owner) is a very nice and down to earth man and Meridian was an amazing bartender!

Yelp
Always an interesting time here. Local neighborhood bar with cheap strong drinks. Occasionally they have live music which, when they do, is usually unbelievably good! Staff are really friendly here as well. Late night can get a little sketchy around here so you have to be a little mindful of your surroundings. It is not uncommon for the police to show up as their is usually some questionable activities happening outside, but generally I feel completely safe here. During the warmer times they have a nice outdoors back area. Definitely recommend a visit here to get a feel for a real nitty gritty local New Orleans local bar scene.

Yelp
We had a nice little break from the parades in here. Clean free bathrooms, good drinks, friendly staff. Service can be a little laid back but I don't really mind. They put out a king cake for everyone to share which was a nice touch. I felt like I was among friends there!

Yelp
Lousy atmosphere and over priced drinks. In New Orleans, there are SO MANY better choices where you can spend your money & time!

Yelp
Awesome neighborhood dive, dog friendly spot. Duane is the bomb. Chill friendly vibes.

Yelp
Fun place. DeWayne the bartender is a hoot. My sister and I had a great time. We would return.

Yelp
Great neighborhood bar hangout. We played Jenga, TouchTunes was rollin...bartender Stephen was great.

Yelp
Great neighborhood bar! Bartenders are friendly, super chill spot. No kitchen but the owner and his girlfriend bring or order food for everyone frequently. Lovely people. Great spot for the coming Mardi Gras parades. Good prices, beer and shot special. I come after work or to watch a football or basketball game. Usually a good mix of people

Yelp
I was treated poorly. I put my credit card behind the bar to start a tab but when I returned to close it it had been given to someone else. The owner condescendingly said these things happen..., this is my credit card and you're acting like you made a mistake and gave me the wrong drink. Kevin was the only one trying to defuse the situation everyone else was totally unprofessional. If you have never visited this place...,........ DON'T.

Yelp
This is my neighborhood hangout! Always have a blast at this place. I remember when it was the Turning Point. Awe such great times! Nowe that things are getting back into the swing of things, I can't wait for the local talent to start showing up and turning out. Always a strong drink to be poured here. Long live Verets!

Yelp
I'm a regular here and the "management" just fired two of the long term bartenders that made this place a home. I live a few blocks away and walk my dog here every day, and come here every day after work, but I will never ever be back. They ruined a community. It's so so sad

Yelp
I'm giving this place 5 stars for the ambience, the drink prices, and the overall badass-ness. This was a great find while on my first trip to Nola from Chicago! I'd been walking around nearby in the Garden District with my boyfriend, doing some touristy things, and we realized we wanted to stop and have a drink. He looked up bars nearby on Yelp and found this place based on the photos, and I'm extremely glad he did. Right when we stepped through the door, we noticed the cool red lighting, mannequins, and bar that was in slight disarray, and we fell in love. The bartender that night was strangely the same bartender we had at another bar up in the Marigny a few nights prior, and we were glad to see her. Her name was Anna, which I'll never forget since that's my name! We each sat at the bar where some locals sat, and we ordered a few PBRs, because why not. Chatting with others at the bar and with Anna is how we learned that the other people in there were locals. One guy even bought everyone inside a shot, since it was his birthday. Verret's was a seriously chill option outside of the classic tourist areas nearby, and we truly are grateful to have found it.

Yelp
Dark. Friendly. Low Key. It's where the locals go! They had a screen up where some of the patrons were playing video games. A piano on the side. I sat in their lounge. It was comfortable. I accidentally took a nap. It was too cozy in here. My friends ordered some drinks and they also took some to go and more walking we did in New Orleans. Definitely a bar to visit when you don't want the loud club like bars on Bourbon.

Yelp
This is one of those classic New Orleans dive bars that everyone needs to experience. I saw a band callee Damaged Goods, and they where fantastic. White Boy BBQ was selling food in the back, and it was outstanding. Pulled pork sandwich, Chicken pot pie sandwich, and these loaded potatoes, with pulled pork and bacon. They come to Verrets often, and I promise you its worth the trip. Getting back to the venue, the bar is padded, and red and has such a funky unque look to it. And there is a awesome patio outside area in the back. This bar will is now in my regular rotation!

Yelp
Awesome place on the fringe of the garden district. Super nice people. And a swingers club. Haha. Seriously it's spooky on the outside friendly the inside. Just like Casper...

Yelp
My friend and I are visiting from Memphis, and decided to hit a neighborhood bar in the Garden District. The bar was very nice and everyone knew each other, but they made us tourists feel right at home. I would definitely suggest going there if you are on the area. The staff was awesome, and the drinks were great. We had both Woody and Ed as our bartenders, and they kept us entertained, and our glasses full.

Yelp

Yelp
The Quintessential New Orleans Corner Dive Bar. Dark and Cozy. Great Prices, atmosphere and staff!! Always amazing live music . With a lovely covered patio for smokers and Thais who want to be outside. Dog Friendly.

Yelp
Did I step into the past? In this location, will it last? The sign suggests a 50's joint. The vibe inside won't disappoint. Tablecloths. Table lamps. Tables set for vintage tramps. Fairly priced with fare on menu. Barely patroned, sure to win you. Classy, sassy, right on tune. The patio is coming soon.

Yelp
Quaint old 50's style bar. Live music on weekends after 9 pm.

Yelp
An absolute gem. The best ambiance of any neighborhood bar that I've been to in the city. There's 50s red vinyl everywhere. The lighting is perfect. I will also vouch for the Sunday night bartender. My friends and I enjoyed the place so much that we debated withholding reviews, so we could keep the place to ourselves. Given that we were the only people in the bar for most of the night, we figured it could accomodate a few more people and still meet our needs.

Yelp
This bar has some good seating and a nice cushioned bar so you can't bang your knees and hurt yourself due to any drinking accidents. The bartender that served me was one I recognized as he used to used to work at Snake and Jake's so that was a bonus. They have a decent number of TVs so that makes this a good spot to watch sports. Definitely a nice retro dive bar full of New Orleans uniqueness. I did think the beer would be cheaper due to its location and they didn't have any specials going on during my last visit but its still gotten very popular with folks in the neighborhood.

Yelp
EVERY WEDNESDAY! Have you been to Verret's on a Wednesday? You should really go on a Wednesday. Check out Cool Nasty and the MC who never fails to remind you that they're there EVERY WEDNESDAY! Excellent live music--jazzy, funky, call out a song and they'll play it. Wanna sing/rap/dance? Just hit the floor and join in. This place takes open mic night to another level. Wonderful little Central City dive bar; the kind of place where everyone knows each other and newcomers are welcomed like they've been going for years. Drinks are cheeeappp, back patio is lit, and Dina the bartender is the nicest person you'll ever meet with the voice of an angel.

Yelp
I got mad love for this bar. My roommate and I checked out Verret's fairly soon after we moved to the neighborhood, and it did not disappoint. Two years later, it's my go-to bar around the corner. The bartenders are friendly and fun, as are the fellow patrons. There's always an interesting mix of folks hanging out there, which I appreciate. The drinks are stiff but reasonably priced - a winning combo, in my opinion. The atmosphere is funky and divey, without being gross. There's a spacious patio in the back, with fans in the summer and heaters in the winter (which I like, since I turn into the occasional chain-smoker when I drink). Whether you're a local in search of your next neighborhood hangout or a tourist looking to grab a drink somewhere off the beaten path, Verret's is your place.

Yelp
Coming to this bar was by far one of the best experiences during our trip to New Orleans. The environment is friendly, with a tiny but cozy bar and a big patio on the back. We were lucky enough to enjoy an AMAZING jazz concert that ended up with the bartender singing on the stage. She literally sings like an angel. Completely recommended.

Yelp
My coworkers love the bar. But I can't do it.. Decent back patio, but have yet to have a cold beer (only been 5 or 6 times). The beers aren't hot, but they are not cold by any means.

Yelp
Something really homey and N'awlins about this place. Strong neighborhood divebar with a friendly easy going and eclectic set of folks, good bartenders, and good specials. Cool as hell because it isn't even trying to be. Great place to take the edge off when you need to unwind.

Yelp
Cool dive bar with live music and cheap drinks! A great Nola hang out... Red lights and regulars

Yelp
Visited this bar yesterday and found that there are truly decent and interesting people in this bar. Prices are good. Atmosphere is cozy. Yesterday's bartender was entertaining, conscientious, friendly, and accommodating. Couldn't ask for anything more.

Yelp
Verret's is my neighborhood bar and it's the best one evah! Bartender Adina is truly awesome. Friendly people, live music (sometimes). Funky, dark and eclectic.

Yelp
So let me begin by saying I'm not a blogger nor a yelper. But I feel this place needs to be placed on Front Street. The place has that definite vintage feel, but it has a lot to be desired. We rang the bell to the door and where reluctantly let in, the bartender (Rick or Rich) was going off on how some Native Americans didn't tip him and that he would let me and my mate in if we were good tippers. We thought ok we can handle this, since the bartender seemed a little sauced. We get in and get up to the bar and order a round of drinks, the place smells like a mix of a dirty cat litter and dirty socks. As we sit there talking we notice the bartender and his friend, who is either the owner or a manager drinking and trying to come on to every girl in the bar. My friend and I are laughing at how drunk the bartender is getting why the owner or manager is trying to score. I know its New Orleans and cockroaches are normal, but when they are crawling up to you with no fear, I get a little leery. The bartender is bragging to us about how some guy was shot over a drug deal, right next to where the owner or manager was standing. And how coke is rampant through the place, I'm thinking to myself why would he be sharing this with us? Then he proceeds to tell us about the alligator buried out back that some, drugged out bar patron burnt and killed by putting the thing in boiling water. I mean really? I ask my mate if this is really happening and I get a strong YES. Then he points to the idiot that killed the poor alligator, telling us the guys a heroine junky. Nice one bartender, I see you got your patrons back. Maybe we went on an off night but I definitely will not be going back. There are better places within walking distance, better attitudes and service. Yes it's a dive bar I get it, but it's a dive bar lacking real genuine character. I don't like my bartenders and owner/managers drunker than me.

Yelp
Before buying my house in the quiet countryside of Lakeview, I lived a block up from this bar and it was called The Turning Point. Sketchy and loud is what I knew it as. When my friends suggested trying this bar as a potential Uptown regular spot, I was leery to say the least. We walked in around 9pm on a Sunday night and there were only two other patrons but the place looked great! Red sparkly old-school vinyl everywhere, lots of tables and chairs, a decent stocked bar, Stella on tap, and Bullett Old Fashioneds are $6?! My group and I were grinning from ear to ear very shortly after arrival. The bartender was great and made us feel very welcome from the moment we entered. He showed us the back patio which was setup similar to a beer garden with tall wooden tables and lights strung across the space. Overall the new management/owners of this spot have made a very cool hangout for this neighborhood. They have live music on some nights as well as food specials such as Taco Tuesdays and game day specials (bucket of domestics for $10). Good drink prices and very cool ambience will make this a regular spot for the gang. I highly recommend this place if you're looking for a cool new spot in the Garden District that is not your typical bar (no offense GDP).
